These are some great tips, thanks so much!
I’m looking for a new bronzer and i need help, can anyone recommend a good bronzer for fair skin? I have strawberry blond hair, so i don’t want anything too dark, but my skin tends to get a little shiny by the end of the day, so i want a bronzer which is a little matte but gives me a nice glow…
Is this too much to ask??

Hey Sally! I’m pretty fair but with brunette hair and I use a liquid bronzer from the brand St Tropez. You only need a tiny bit and you put it on with your fingers. It’s completely non-shimmery but because it’s a gel it doesn’t give a powdery matte look either! And it’s a browny colour, so it gives a nice tanned glow, no orangeyness. I can’t remember what its called but it’s in a small silver tube and it costs around $28 :) I’d def reccommend trying out the tester next time you’re in DJ’s / priceline

      Hi Sally,
I can’t recommend the smashbox bronzer enough. It is perfect for fair skin and gives the nicest glow. It’s called ‘halo’ or something and is in a great little twist container. I started using it after Zoe recommended it on her blog and I haven’t looked back!

God I need some new make-up, long overdue! Love this tutorial.

Zoe (or anyone who can answer!) please talk to me about concealer and primer. I know they are different but what and when (ie: after moisturiser, foundatione etc) do I use these products? And do you use both at the same time?

Oh, and also, I have very fair blonde eyelases and brows… I love getting my lashes tinted, but when my brows are done, I look like a drag queen! The dye just sits on my skin… I end up just penciling everday, but is there a better way? I love eyebrows… wish I had some lovely ones.

      Hi,

So primer goes on after moisturiser (maybe 5 mins after so your moisturiser has time to settle in) and then after primer you apply your foundation so that way it lasts longer. You can even use primer alone if you just want to even out skin tone a bit or use with a tinted moisturiser.

Concealer is good for hiding blemishes, redness and under eye circles, you can get concealers that are coloured, e.g. green concealer counteracts redness (e.g. pimples), yellow concealer is used for under eye circles as it counteracts blue tones and purple/lavender shades are used for yellow or bruising.

If you do use these coloured concealers you need to then use your skin tone concealer on top so the colours don’t show through.

      Hope that helps!

      Hi Cordeline,

      Primer:
This is a product that acts as a base for your foundation and concealer to sit on. It is different to moisturiser, as moisturiser is designed to sink into the layers of your skin and do all the cool skin benefits such as anti-aging, dark spots, blemishes, etc. The ingredients in a primer are too big to penetrate the skin and form a barrier for your makeup to sit on, making your skin look smoother.

      Concealer:
Designed to cover any imperfections in your skin tone that Foundation doesn’t cover.

      What and when:
Moisturiser (let that sit for 10 mins to sink into your skin)
      Primer
      Foundation
      Concealor (if you need it)

      Brows:
When you get your brows tinted ask if the dye can be brushed into the brow hairs only (I use a mascara wand) and not painted onto your skin. Also maybe use a lighted colour….

      Hope this helps!

Thanks Anita and Naz! Must get onto some primer I think… concealer, maybe… I am lucky with blemishes etc but have started to notice dark shadows under eyes lately – damn kids up at night :-)

I like the tip about the dye being brushed onto the eyebrows Anita – brilliant, I will ask about that next time. I do always ask for a light colour, but it still looks scary!.

        Thank you!

    1. CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Concealer (as concealer and to prep eyelids)

    2. Clinique QuickEyes Creme Shadow in Muffin (subtly shimmering and rather fantastic creme shadow)

    3. Benefit Eye Bright (the perfect fleshy-pink pencil for the waterline)

    4. Touch Expert Advanced By Terry (under-eye illuminator clicky-pen)

    5. Utowa eye lash curler

    6. MAC Opulash mascara

I definitely concede the brow fill-in was a little intense/patchy on shoot day.
(Which is what you want when you’re constantly bullying women into investing time and effort into their eyebrows.)

When my girlfriend and I first saw this vid, we immediately noticed it.

And then I swore a little bit.

Great vid – I love Zoe’s work! Whenever I put lots of concealer under my eyes though it always ends up seeping into fine lines! And I end up with these very unglamorous concealery creases that don’t do a very good job of disguising my dark circles haha!

I’ve been thinking about trying one of those illuminatory thingies for a while but I can’t really afford the famed touche eclat and wonder if any of the cheaper brands are really worth bothering with…

I get that concealer goes into the creases too!

I think maybe if I try dabbing it like Zoe did it won’t do that?

    • Blaser

I had the same problem and I bought Bobbi Brown concealer and corrector and also estee lauder double wear. Basically it comes down to good application – lots of patting and opening up the line and putting it in the crease, using a richer eye cream and the right amount of powder to set (much more than you think you need, but applying a bit at a time).

I’m not a makeup artist or counter lady (so, not trying to sell anything on behalf of anyone!) but I have tried everything and think these are the best.

I love Zoe, but I don’t have the time or motivation to put that many layers on each day. Hell, I’m 41 and have only just started really wearing eye makeup! I figure a bit of mascara and eyeliner will do me for a while yet. :)

in answer to your question, i am pretty lazy with my makeup, so i never put mascara on the bottom lashes as i find it tedious – however i did invest in a good kohl eyeliner so that i could run it along my waterline and it wouldn’t go south during the day, or irritate my eyes.

      just my two cents :)

I had a terrible eyelash curler incident once! was curling them on the edge of my bed when I thought something ran over my foot, turns out there was nothing there but the jolt took out half of the eyelashes on one eye! I looked ridiculous and it was quite painful, bit like waxing! but miracle cure individual lashes saved the day to stop me looking so weird, mind you then I had to get them out when my other ones came back – cue cotton tips and nail polish remover….shudder…

I only do mascara on the outer corners of my bottom lashes, a bit like how some people only do eyeliner on the outer corners of their bottom lids too. The eyeliner trick is said to make your eyes look wider. But when I don’t use eyeliner, I just do that with mascara

They are like a special concealer, some are cold so it’d reduce puffiness under the eye. L’Oreal, Estee Lauder and YSL all have very popular illuminators.
