Victoria Beckham hasn’t slept much in seven months.

Not only has she been working simultaneously on two fashion collections and wasting energy thwarting off those pesky Spice Girl reunion rumours, like many other working mothers her baby daughter, Harper, isn’t sleeping through the night.

Despite being the reason for her sleep deprivation, Victoria Beckham hasn’t held a grudge, naming one of the handbags in her latest collection after her  seven-month-old non sleeper.

Showing both her Victoria Beckham and Victoria by Victoria Beckham labels at New York Fashion Week, the mother-of-four has now produced her tenth collection since delving into fashion design four years ago. A surprising number of celebrities love her clothes, take a look through the gallery below.

spring 2012 ready-to-wear

But Beckham has been on the receiving end of some nasty criticism since returning to London from her showings at New York Fashion Week last week. Criticism aimed at her tired looking appearance rather than a scathing fashion review.

She addressed her critics in an interview with British newspaper the Mirror,

“Look, if people want to say I’m miserable then so be it,” she says. “I’m really not. I have a lot on my plate. I’m not going to lie about it, I’m tired. I’m really tired but I’m also very happy with my life.

“I’m basically just like any woman who’s working and has lots of children – it’s tough.

“Harper’s not sleeping that great… I’m up with the baby as all mums are and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s not a team of people doing it for me.

“And then people want to say I look crap. Well, I’m a working mum, so give me a break.”

When Beckham sent her small debut collection of 15 figure-hugging dresses down the catwalk in 2008, they instantly became the hottest thing on the runway and soon after celebrities appeared at parties and events wearing her sophisticated, minimalist designs.

Similarly this year A-List celebrities, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cameron Diaz are all reportedly vying to be dressed by the designer at the most important red carpet event of the year, the Oscars. An honour usually reserved for the fail-safe established couture designers such as Valentino and Versace.

If only everyone would just forget about that 90’s girl band.

What do you think of the Victoria Beckham collection?

I think Victoria is fabulous – talk about a fairly normal person done extremely well for herself, she’s a blooming hard worker, great mother and has a hilarious sense of humour – love the way she raises her children very normally – good on her!

I actually quite like her stuff!! Some of the dresses are just so pretty and girly, love it! The ones on the catwalk towards the end I’m not as fond of, bu good on her anyway!

And I agree with her, give her a break! She’s still a working mum of 4! Not exactly easy for anyone, especially when its all done in the spotlight. Props to her, her kids seem to be happy and grounded.

I can’t say I’ve been a huge of Victoria over the years, but to be honest, her designs are classy and stylish. She seems to have a knack for dressing women of all shapes and playing up womanly features. The celebrities in the gallery are all different shapes and sizes and they all look fantastic. One of the few designers whose stuff I think I could/would actually wear.

I don’t dislike her, and her clothes are fab, but can she seriously call herself a fashion designer? Did she go to design school? Could she cut it on, say, Project Runway? I read an interview where she admitted she doesn’t sketch, cut or sew. What does she do then? Dream up a dress (which we could all do) and ask a “real” designer to make it for her? Surely anybody with her money and fame could start at the top with their own fashion label.

hmmm nope dont think we could all ‘dream’ up dresses like her – some people just have a knack for great ideas, great fabric choices, great cuts etc…
I dont think you have to go to fashion school to be a fashion designer.

Love her! One of my male friends once called me a “vacuous idiot” for stating how much I like her, but I think anyone who can live under that much scrutiny, stick by a cheating husband, raise four children, work full time and still look amazing is worthy admiration, despite how much money she may have. Couldn’t agree more MissJean! Even if you do have staff doing other tasks for you, having broken sleep and getting up to a little baby takes it out of you. If she looks perky people would complain that she doesn’t look after her own baby, if she complains about being tired due to getting up she gets a roasting for that too.

I find he grouchy looking in photos but immensley self deprecating, funny and honest in interviews. She always says that she isn’t the most talented performer and always had to work really hard at her singing etc. She can laugh at herself and I like that in a person.

Society today seems to to be very “the cup is half empty” so what if she looks tired, if she was full of beans then the media would be saying she is a bad mother because she must have a herd of helpers. If she chooses to work and raise children well that is her choice and she should not be critisied for that. I will be returning to work in May after having a year off with my first child. I am alway surprised when people assume I will be returning to work full time. I am fortunate enough to be in a position to go back part time. I am dreading leaving my son 2 days a week but I am looking forward to returning to work. People need to be less critical of others and just do what is right for them and their situation. I would love to have VB bank balance but even if I did I would still go back to work part time – maybe I could have lots and lots of children with all that money:):)

Tally up the value of her jewellery, handbags and shoes – I’m sure the amount would be worth more than most of our homes. Her complaining about being a tired working mum is an insult to the working mums who really do struggle with exhaustion and battle day to day. She has a huge choice and yes she is very talented and is doing a great job, but I dont think her complaints about how tired and over worked she is while juggling a baby and family is helpful to working mums who work to pay for the rent and groceries and who are trapped in their lives, who dont have extreme wealth to fall back on if it gets too hard. She has chosen to be this busy and has a choice to have night nannies to help her through if she wanted to, most of us dont.

Of course she has help but plenty of non-celebs have nannies too. Or go to sleep school, or….whatever. Sure she has a chef, probably nannies, gardeners, etc too, but I have a problem with people accusing a mother of lying about tending to her baby in the night.

I don’t believe it’s ‘daft’ (but thanks for the lovely suggestion) to believe that she does get up at night to tend to her baby – she’s had four kids so is it really so difficult to imagine she might adore her role as a mother and cherish those moments, however tired she may be? I remember loving that quiet bonding time during the night feeds. The exhaustion was something that came with it, but it didn’t diminish those special moments.

As someone pointed out above, celebs get criticized for hiring nannies, and accused of lying if they claim to do it all themselves. Is there a ‘right’ answer or are people just looking for a reason to attack? Whatever, I’m just happy not to be famous!!

I worked my ass off, long hours and interstate travel that killed my soul to be away from my son, and if we’d had the money, would have defnitely paid someone to cook/clean etc if husband hadn’t been home. I just don’t understand Victoria Beckham. She was the least talented of the Spice Girls (which is saying something), and until she started promoting herself not as a singer, but as one half of the Beckham’s, it was looking like she was going to be the least successful of the girls post band break-up (again, that’s saying something). Basically I feel like she’d have had no career post Spice Girl’s if she weren’t married to Beckham. So much of her marketing strategy depends on her relationship with him.

I am kind of amazed by the way she handled her PR after moving to the US. I lived in the UK years ago, and she was pretty much on the same level as Jordan. Her style was an inspiration only to chavs. There were many designers who dreaded her buying their clothing. But then she moves to the US, swaps her stripper heels, shitty hair extensions and booty shorts for Roland Mouret couture dresses, and suddenly she’s being lauded. Even the UK press bought into it.

I actually respect their marketing skills more, because they weren’t married to a global superstar they could build a brand around.

Sure. But my point was that some people seem to take these celebrities wearing her designs as evidence that she’s a good designer, when in actuality they’d wear a garbage bag if they were paid enough.

Having seen her designs in person at Neiman Marcus, I wasn’t impressed at all, especially as I was able to compare one particularly blatant rip-off with the original.

Agree with you there, same as products getting featured in the editorial sections of magazines, you’re only getting a mention if you’ve paid for an advert.

Actually she has said in an interview (I believe for Vogue) that she neither pays people to wear her clothes, nor gives them to celebrities for free. If I remember correctly there was speculation that Emma Bunton and Melanie Brown were quite upset about her not giving them free clothes (which they both said wasn’t true, she didn’t give them free clothes but they didn’t care).

Then she’s either lying, or the celebs wearing and actually paying for her designs are nuts. As I said, I’ve seen her designs in person, and I wasn’t impressed with the quality, or with the fact that almost every item was a knock-off. These celebs could be wearing the better quality originals, so there has to be something that’s drawing them to her sub-standard clobber.

I do and I dont. I read an article when Harper was a newborn where she said she had 3 nannies helping her (including a mothercraft nurse) and in it she said she did still get up to Harper as she was breastfeeding, but I still think there would be times when she would “delegate” and say to the nanny “you know what, Im bloody exhausted, can you give the baby a bottle tonight and let me get a full nights sleep” and there’s nothing wrong with that, lets face it who wouldnt if you had the luxury of having a live in nanny, I certainly dont judge her for it.

I haven’t seen the new collections but I love her previous ones and I adore her style.

And good on her for telling it like it is. She is a working mum and so what if she doesn’t look like the airbrushed version of herself.

I love that you always see Victoria with her kids, taking them to school, at football matches whatever.
