I was chatting to a friend earlier this week and I was wearing leather pants. She said what I bet you’re thinking RIGHT NOW. The standard “where did you get them” was followed by the inevitable: “I LOVE your pants but I could never wear them.”
WRONG. All wrong. Because Yes. She. Can. And. You. Can. Too.
I have experienced the same sentiment about things I’ve seen my girlfriends wearing. How can a floral kaftan look effortlessly bohemian on one person, but the minute I try to picture it on me, it’s all disheveled hippie. The answer? Because you have to give it a shot. As in try it on. Duh.
Staring at someone looking fabulous in something and telling yourself it won’t work on you, DOES NOT ACTUALLY MEAN IT WON’T WORK ON YOU. You have to try something to find out it’s amazing. Or not amazing. But you won’t know without giving it a whirl.
So, how does one pull off leather pants without looking like Michael Jackson in Thriller? (Although hey, if that’s your thing, knock yourself out but remember to take a quick selfie with your video camera because we want to see your moves.)
Take a deep breath and keep reading.
This is how celebrities are wearing the trend (post continues below gallery):

Olivia Palermo
1. Remember that leather pants aren’t jeans, so if (like me) you prefer a little – ahem – coverage at the back, look for a sweater or a shirt with a dropped back hem. They are everywhere at the moment so you will easily be able to find t-shirts, button-up shirts and singlets with a long line through the body. I wear mine with a boyfriend blazer.
2. Footwear is another high-risk area when it comes to pairing with a leather pant. So ankle boots or ballet flats are your safest options. Also, I’ve tried leather pants at night with stilletos from Tony Bianco that have a tiny ankle strap and it looked fabulous. I didn’t look anything like Sandy from Grease after she worked out that Danny is the one that she wants.
3. This look is red hot right now and does have some longevity (it’s pretty much a staple along with jeans) but forking out a month’s rent on exxy designer leather pants – that pain is for LIFE. Asos and Topshop have great, realistic, FAKE leather pants and leggings for online shoppers.
4. If you prefer to try on then you need to go for either Sportsgirl or Supre. Both sell a great skinny fit that just grazes the ankle – so there is really no excuse not to give it a go.
GOOD LUCK.
Would you wear leather pants? What trend do you want to try, but your not sure how?

I wore leather pants with my leather boots and fur coat. Felt real nice

Every man should own one or more pair of leather jeans and wear them every where and all the time, if he rides a bike or not ! They are the most comfortable pants you can ever wear and people love guys wearing leather. It’s a statement ! Forget what everyone else thinks, it doesn’t matter, go for the comfort and wear !

It’s not okay to wear fur but it is okay to wear leather. Could someone please explain …
loading...
Hmm leather pants they look great on the celebrities in the gallery and I’m sure a lot of women would great in them too but not me lol! don’t have the guts to wear them.

Are we taking real leather or leather looking pants/leggins?

I remember saying to my buddy: do you reckon I can wear leather pants at 41? He said, baby, you should wear leather pants 24/7.

Leather pants look even sexier on 40+

I was actually just thinking about leather this morning. I’m heading to the USA and am going to a couple of rock concerts. I was thinking about purchasing a leather mini skirt (or similar from H&M) with a black vintage t-shirt. Any recommendations for shoes that might go with this outfit?

black ankle boots with a comfy stacked heel!

Oh perfect I just bought a pair last weekend. Thanks!!
loading...
No worries, enjoy the USA, I was there last year and loooooved it!!
loading...
Leopard print ballet flats would also look cute. x

Olivia yes, Gwyneth yes, the rest – if they can’t pull it off what hope is there for me

Leather smells bad. It is dead animal after all. It can’t be cleaned either. And it makes the clothes near it in the wardrobe stink too. Pleather is another word for plastic. As in the stuff that comes from refineries – those factories with the enormous chimneys that spew toxic black smoke all day long…
So no leather or pleather pants for me! Just simple comfortable clothing I can get lots of wear out of & minimize the damage to the planet caused by my existence.

I think leather smells amazing. Nothing beats worn suede. Mmm.
loading...
Leather can’t be machine-washed, but it can be hand-washed just fine. You just need to drip-dry it in a cool, dark cupboard, then scrunch it in your hands & rub it together to soften it. It only stinks & taints other clothing because everyone is under this strange delusion that it has to be dry-cleaned, or worse yet, that it can’t be cleaned at all.
That said, only Olivia, Kurkova, & Elle look good above. Leather pants are fine per se, but they can’t replace taste & a discerning eye.

You don’t have a clue….the amount of chemicals used in all processing whether it is denim, cotton, or any other type of fabric is shocking. Do some research before you single out one material over another as ‘needing more processing’ or being responsible for smoke stacks.

Ok this may be a stupid question.. but: Olivia Palermo has her leather pants loose at her hips, is this alright or not? Does your body shape affect that? (I am on the thinner side, so in that case would it be alright)?Everyone else has it tight at that region next to their vagina. Are jeans that are loose in that area alright? Thanks a bunch! xoxo

This post is AWESOME!!!!

Thank you! Inspired again – it’s all about attitude and LOVE the outfit on Olivia Palermo. Off now to find somewhere to get them. Lots of great stores in the US, but I miss Supre so much!
loading...
alright you’ve convinced me.. ill do it. but im just hoping my credit card doesnt snap in protest.
loading...
I’m sorry, but leather pants still cry “try hard” if you’re not a rock star. I admit the modern styling is a fresh look – Olivia Palermo and Elle for example – but for regular chicks like me? Nuh-uh.
PS. THANK YOU for calling them leather pants not “a leather pant” like all those wanky fashion people. ARGH.
loading...
I have just one questions: how do you wash them?
loading...
You don’t. It’s leather.
Do you wash a leather jacket? :/
loading...
But you don’t wear a leather jacket right next to your skin, though.
loading...
The ONLY person in the above photographs who looks good in leather pants is Jennifer Hawkins. A tall, gorgeous supermodel.
Enough said!!!!
loading...
But of course that’s just YOUR opinion that she looks good and the others don’t. A lot of people might think otherwise.
loading...
They all look great if you ask me
loading...
Question, how can you guys on this site reject wearing of fur, but be so pro leather? I don’t have a problem with either – I wear and love both – but I do find it a little contradictory? If you’ve changed your minds because it is now more on trend, then that’s fine but I just found it a bit odd?
loading...
I was wondering the same. You’re wearing a dead animal on your body – but it’s okay if it’s a cow? Is it because they’re supposedly not as cute? Some would argue it’s the way they’re raised/killed but how do you know if the cow has suffered or not? And even if it’s apparently raised and killed ‘humanely’ (like there’s a humane way to be murdered) does that suddenly make it okay? Would rabbit leather be acceptable, but not rabbit fur?
It reminds me of when a butcher here in perth started selling horse meat and people freaked out, he even got death threats. As a vego everyone expected me to be horrified but frankly it didn’t affect me any more than usual, I see no difference between someone eating horse or cow or sheep or whatever. I think they’re all great animals, and for them to die just so I can eat or wear something, well, that seems a but selfish to me.
But whatever
each to their own.
loading...
Although I am a vegetarian and do not wear/use/agree with leather OR fur, I do see a difference.
Leather is a by-product of the (usually) beef industry, where those cows are already being killed for human use. Yes, the conditions are generally horrendous and far from humane but that’s the same as the meat industry where most leather effectively comes from. (That said, not all leather comes from cows so that logic doesn’t ALWAYS apply.)
Fur on the other hand, generally comes from animals not used for meat (in most parts of the world) like seals, beavers, bears and wolves to name but a few. The animals are killed in discgisting ways (electrocuted, poisoned etc) and many are skinned alive on factory farms for their fur. When fur producers use traps in the wild, not only do many of the animals lie there for days, trapped, maimed and suffering before being put out of their misery but a lot of animals not even wanted for their fur also get trapped and then are just discarded. Then of course, there’s the baby fur seals that are bludgeoned to death on the ice and the black bears caught and left in cruel traps in Canada…
Like I said, I don’t agree at all with either industry and think many people are quite naive and ill-informed about where the products they use come from but at the same time I understand why people are more vocal about fur or have differing opinions between the two ‘fabrics’.
I hope this post doesn’t come across as preachy; I merely wanted to give an honest answer to your question.
loading...
*disgusting
Not sure what went wrong there…
loading...
I’m sorry, but I’m moved to thoroughly contradict pretty much everything you’ve said about the fur industry, at least the majority of it.
Fur from China comes from animals that are grossly mistreated. This also means the fur is of poor quality (mistreated or unhappy animals reflect their conditions in their coats, as you will notice in sick pets).
If you’re buying good quality fur, which the overwhelming majority is because it IS a luxury product, it’s from European, American and Canadian fur farms, where the animals are well cared-for by law, humanely euthanised, and the carcases used in pet or zoo animal feed.
loading...
That’s okay, I don’t mind people disagreeing with me.
As you say, fur is a ‘luxury’ item, so not everyone can afford the ‘humane’, quality stuff. And I don’t believe the fur in high street stores (I live in London) comes from those places. Yes, a lot of stores only use faux fur (I know Topshop has a ‘no fur’ policy) but not all.
loading...
Hi AmyKate,
Speaking for myself, I guess I wear leather but would never wear fur because leather is a by-product of an animal which is eaten.
Fur is purely for decoration.
I wish I could be more principled about it but that’s my line!
And also – my ‘leather’ pants have never actually been close to a living creature until I put them on.
loading...
I bought a pair recently, and love them. Every time I wear them, people comment on how good I look (and honestly, I don’t normally get that many compliments) so there is something to be said for the leather, or in my case, pleather pant!
loading...
I love this look, but so far I haven’t succumbed. The chain store versions in Australia are either too expensive ($150 for plasticy fake leather leggings…really?) or look cheap and nasty. Pants are something I always need to try on before buying, so ASOS is out of the question. I’m sure by the time I find the perfect pair no one will want to be seen dead in leather pants anymore.

i have found a great way to get the same look without the discomfort/price tag of leather is coated black denim in a really skinny, ankle grazing cut. i think country road had some good ones – i bought a random pair from a little boutique and wear them to death.
loading...
Same miss green! Had the CR one’s then bought some from Zara. Sooo confortable and hubby loves them too (me wearing them that is)! Wearing them with cream lace top to remove the ‘tough’ edge and a pair of cream and black brogues plus scarf – easy getting dressed!
loading...
The only thing I have to say about leather pants is….if you wear them, also wear undies. Bodily fluids that innevitably escape from the human nether regions will stain the leather and make it smelly.
loading...
Oh dear god too much information but erm… thanks for the tip heehee
loading...
I think Olivia Palermo looks gorgeous. Seems they look better on thinner women. They look great with a loose top and perhaps a jacket. Love them with two tone ballet flats too.
Shame about the price tag. The latest from Scanlon are $900+
loading...
Just read point 4… might try Sportsgirl or Supre. Thanks
loading...
Oh how I looked like Karolina Kurkova in leather pants
loading...
WISH I looked like Karolina Kurkova in leather pants!
loading...
I’ve been told that I resemble Karolina Kurkova when I’m not wearing any pants.
loading...
I love the leather look girls…bring it on…don’t be scared
loading...
I bought the ones from Sportsgirl and I live in them. LIVE IN THEM.
Wear them with everything. T Shirts for lunch in the day, out to bars/clubs with a silky singlet and a blazer … even wore them to my boyfriends the other night to watch movies with an oversized jumpers. Leather pants rock!
But I hate them with leather ankle boots. Think its a bit matchy matchy. I wear them either with ballet flats or a pair of pony hair (fake of course)boots that I have.
loading...
Fake pony fur boots? Why bother?
Sambag do the real thing and they are GORGEOUS.
loading...
Oi Ed…Fix the Dannis from Grease!
lol
loading...
Can’t believe there was a leather pants gallery with no Victoria Beckham in it! She knows how to rock the leather pants.
loading...
I want to like them soooo bad but I can’t get past the way they sit around the crotch area. Even in all the celeb pics they show funny folds and not so flattering creases around hips and crotch region. The only ones I think avoid this are the leather leggings (not the pants). HOWEVER, ladies should definitely abide by the shirt-must-be-longer-than-vagina rule when wearing ANY leggings that aren’t exercise skins.
loading...
I was telling my little cuz (16yr old) this rule and she rolled her eyes and said I was out of touch with fashion. Am I wrong????? Exposed crotches…. Please, nooooo!!!!!!!!!
loading...
You are not wrong. Camel toe is not a fashion statement.
loading...
I’m her age and strongly believe in this rule
loading...
YES!! Shirt-must-be-longer-than-vagina rule!! Unfortunately So many people dont abide by this!! When I wear leggings I feel naked or exposed if my top doesnt cover me haha!
loading...
Dannis from Grease?! Lol.
loading...
No. No, I can’t. Really.
loading...
Love them and would definitely wear them. Kinda wish I hadn’t thrown out the ones I had in the 90′s although I don’t think I would fit them now and I’m pretty sure they were a bit too high waisted (not in the cool high-waisted sense of the word – more the Levi 501′s in the early 90′s sense!)
loading...
I have only just managed to find a pair of high leather boots that I can do up over my calves. I’m not sure I have the strength to start a search for leather pants I can get over my thighs.
loading...
OMG … my sentiments EXACTLY!!! lol
loading...
I think it’s all about where you wear them. I wouldn’t be comfortable trying to pull off the look at school pick up but perhaps on a night out with the girls i’d give it a whirl.
loading...
I LOVE leather pants! I was completely converted when I used to live in Austria and they were a very practical winter option.
They are very warm and comfy and make a nice alternative to jeans.
I think they make any outfit look a little more >insert correct adjective here: edgy? high fashion? cool?<
Give them a chance!
loading...
Totally agree with you Bec – SO comfortable and give my poor denim jeans a much needed rest.
loading...
I have a pair of leather motorcycle pants. Sooooo comfortable, they look fabulous even though they’re strictly for safety.
HOWEVER: Cool weather only. They are very warm. Suede pants trash more easily but tend to wick away moisture more easily.
loading...
Sorry………. no one but no one should wear leather pants…………… just as no one above the age of 15 should wear cut off denim shorts and here is the cardinal rule Leggings are not pants……….. please cover your butt I don’t want to see it.
loading...
pooh pooh to that. I’m 36 – should i be wearing twinset and pearls? pretty sure kate moss isn’t 15 and looks fantastic in denim shorts, leather pants etc.
loading...
I wouldn’t wear leather pants. I don’t wear jeans or slacks or anything of that nature. Strictly a ‘skirts only’ kind of girl. And only a particular type of skirt too, ie ankle length. Boy does that make clothes shopping a hassle!
loading...
Remember the friends episode where Ross gets leather pants. Then he’s at his girlfriends place and he’s overheating. So he goes to the bathroom to take them off so he can cool down. Then he can’t get them back on. The phone calls, the powder, the lotion?
I believe this is a warning – not risking it.
loading...
Haha, that’s exactly what I was thinking about while reading this article!!
loading...
Ross: They’re still, they’re still not coming on man and the lotion and the powder have made a paste!
Joey: Really?! Uhh, what color is it?
Ross: What difference does that make?!
Joey: Well, I’m just—if the paste matches the pants, you can make yourself a pair of paste pants and she won’t know the difference!
One of my favourite episodes of friends EVER!
loading...
Thank you sooo much for that recap! I have been watcing friends these last couple of days and am head over heels in love with anyting and everything they say!!! I think Friends is exactly my type of humour: not rude, clever with some ‘dumb’ jokes thrown in! YAY!
loading...
Haha! I also love the one where Ross gets his teeth over-whitened and they glow in the dark.
loading...
Another one of my faves is the episode where Ross gets a spray tan…. AMAZING!!!
loading...
I’d extend the ‘cover the butt’ advice to the crotch. None of those looked great.
loading...
I’ve always wondered how hot they get. They look great, but are the comfortable to wear. And do they squeak. My leather jacket sometimes makes the most embarrassing of noises. If that was coming from my pants – well …
