The materialist in me loves the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show. It’s something about the glittery catwalk and pretty colours that just hooks me in – not to mention the fashion, which is just ridiculous. Miranda Kerr received a standing ovation when she opened the show, wearing the famous $2.5 million diamond-studded fantasy bra (which is currently holding the number one spot on my Christmas wishlist. Cough.)

Take a flick through the gallery – there are superhero capes, feathery wings and plenty of sparkles. Plus pictures from the after party.

Miranda Kerr opened the show wearing the $2.5 million diamond-studded fantasy bra.

And check out a preview of the show itself…

Excuse me for sounding snippy but the Folies Bergere was doing it LONG before VS and I used to do it 20+ years ago when I was a showgirl. And we used to DANCE wearing that sort of gear. These chicks just walk and look pretty and they get standing ovations? Meh.

I visited New York recently and went to one of the Victoria Secret stores and was so disappointed at how boring the bras were. They were pretty much just t-shirt bras (ie no lace, pretty patterns or frilly bits) in 100 different colours. I think VS must spend their entire “creative” budget on this stupid run way show. I suppose it’s good marketing because it got me in the store but I didn’t buy anything!!

I once attended a benefit dinner where one of these models was present. She is publicised by the media as a positive role model/supermum and gains attention through her claims of maintaining an extremely healthy diet. There were about 10 courses that made up the dinner (although they were all very small portions) and the model did not eat anything or make any effort for conversation. She just sat there chain-smoking and pouting through the entire meal.

It was rather disappointing to watch, as I actually believed this model’s healthy and bubbly persona was true. Now I know for most of these celebrities who maintain ridiculously slim figures, there are a lot of smoke and mirrors covering up their true selves…

Yes, of course it’s smoke and mirrors. You don’t think they actually eat do you? I read an article about one of them and she said she doesn’t eat for the two days before the show – just liquids! Great! That’s a healthy attitude for our children!

I am 3 weeks and 2 days short of my pregnancy due date. Baby is in the 97th percentile – ie frickin’ giant.
I can’t wait to be in a shape to wear pretty undies again. I don’t need to look like these girls, my normal size 14 to 16 is fine with me, but MAN I want my usual shape back – molto imperfecto, squidgy, cottage cheese textured, laughable and unphotographable as it may be. Besides, a bit of fake tan and some dim lighting, I’m smokin.

… sorry to break it to you but they are genuinely pretending to have fun… its acting… that is the point of the illusion… they are paid to look like they are having fun both backstage and on stage because that is an aspect of branding for this particular brand… can’t you imagine marketing execs sitting down going: our brand its fun, sexy, exciting… so how do we best represent that? that is the image women buy when they step into a store…

I LOVE Victoria’s Secret! When I went to the US last year I was so surprised to find out how reasonably priced everything was! And at that time too, the US dollar was stronger than the AUD.
It’s cheaper than Cotton On Body and in my opinion, VS offers better styles and quality (even if it’s not THE BEST quality ever, it’s still better) for an awesome price. I can’t wait to go to Singapore next month… woo!!

Little disappointed at how Mia champions positive body image and realism, then puts up pictures like these. Most of us will never look like these women, never have stage makeup and lighting and be paid squillions to ponce about in glittery underpants. Normally I LOVE the content on this site – so down-to-earth, sensible and well thought out, but this piece just misses the mark.

Sure, its all very pretty and rather funny, but is this really a positive message to send?

Fair point Emma, we did debate whether or not to put it up. I agree. These women are ohhh soo skinny. They have push up bras and all the bells and whistles to detract from the fact that their BMIs would probably be very low. Don’t get me wrong I would love to be that thin but can we please stop calling them curvy just because they have breasts? Eva Mendes is curvy. Curvy is where there is no bone visable and all of these women have a lot of bone showing (you probably can’t see much because of the make up and lighting) but they are very very thin.

Can we stop worshipping them all and looking up to them? Please put up more photos of more inspiring women who have achieved things other than winning the genetic lottery?

Kathy, it comes down to the whole fantasy and pretense of supermum, superwoman, yummy mummy, women can have I all tripe. If women were honest about the actual help they receive, like women who make their nannies walk 10 paces behind them, the world would be less harsh on women. I’ll tell you a true story. I was on a plane trip with isla fisher and Sasha baron Cohen. First class. Their two daughters werewith their nanny at th end of the plane. I watched this couple treat the hostess like crap the whole flight from the US to Sydney. They barely spent any time with their children the whole flight. But wouldn’t you know it, when the plan landed and they walked out of the terminal where the media was waiting, babes in arms for both of them and nanny nowhere to be seen. Famous people, including supermodels, pretending their lives don’t benefit from help make women who try to work, being an amazing mum and/or wife and still be a goddess, make it very hard on most of the female population when the rest of society think women should be like these other women. Models with high profiles should put something back in society just like other famous people, not just prancing about in underwear because they hit the gentic jackpot. But tell it like it really is like Adriana Lima did, poor petal starving herself a week before she does the VS show. What a way to promote a healthy body image!

I find the VS show a bit f a laugh to be honest. On so many levels. It’s so camp! Those costumes are so ridiculous and the models go on like they’ve hit some modelling jackpot. They are just pieces of meat under the guise of ‘modelling’. That’s what kills me. It’s like every rock star and actor goes to these shows to pick himself a girlfried/wife. It’s just one big meat market! Standing ovation for Miranda? What has she done I’m sorry? She models, it’s her job, there should be a standing ovation for her parents. She is the first one to admit she works ou every day. Every day an eats super healthy, has a nanny etc. All power to her, but to me they are just models woopee. They didn’t do anything special they were just lucky in the looks department. I’m yet to hear Miranda say something interesting or funny she always sounds half asleep to me (prebaby). Sorry they just do zero for me and shows how fickle famous men are…Orlando, lead singer of that band married to lily aldridge, Adam levine…got themselves a victoria’s secret model! Woohoo! ooooohhh jealous?!

just kidding, i totally agree, and the point i was trying to make earlier was that if people like miranda were slightly more genuine about their lifestyle, they would be so much more likable.

i’ll give you an example. the thing that really attracted me to this website was that mia was so down-to-earth and honest. she is clearly very successful but happily admits she does it with help. not that she manages her lifestyle by being this amazing supermum, and doing it all alone. that she does it imperfectly at times, makes mistakes etc. that level of openness is very appealing to me.

i don’t want miranda to eat chips and get fat, i would just like her to say that she has a full time nanny, housekeepers, trainers and whatever other help that means she can do what she does. that way the mums at home who are struggling to get food on the table each night and clean the house will realise that they aren’t some sort of failure.

….AND i do know that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, but when you are really struggling with what seems like a very basic life it just helps to realise that you are comparing yourself against someone with A LOT of help.

Haha…I just think models are overrated. They just hit the gene jackpot bcos of their parents. Then they go on about what they do and don’t eat, personal trainers blah blah blah who cares! Seriously with so much poverty and so many issues am I suppers to give a shit about a multiple million bra worn bysome Aussie chick who gave birth 10 months ago. I will respect supermodels who actually do something for the greater good. Miranda is currently promoting suicide prevention because a family member committed suicide. Kudos that earns my respect. I wish VS would use the shows to promote a charity or cause not just bras and panties (I had to say it). I just find the shows sad and completely camp over the top ridiculous. Adriana Lima or the other one admits to starving herself a week before the show? Boohoo. Angelina Jolie is constantly bagged out and bar the LV campaign, she has used her beauty and intelligence to highlight adoption, poverty stricken areas and gives away ridiculous amounts of money to charity. I would not want my daughter strutting on that stage in underwear while men leer at her. Money over respect is not worth it. It’s just a plain old meat market. It’s disgusting. People don’t want to say it. Why else would kanye be there? Joke…a little…

Forgot to add: completely annoying when famous people pretend they don’t have a multitude of help. I have read Miranda admit to a lot of help and be lucky to do so.nothing more grating when they pretend they do everything. Or when I read supermum and supermodel. Barf…it’s tough out there for real people. It’s why society is so fkd up about women. Women have to be everything to everyone and you can’t have it all at the same time. Why does this stuff make the news? Why show a model who had a baby they don’t look great by not working out everyday and watching their food. But this is how they earn ridiculous amounts of money for not doing much at all. Show me a hardworking mum trying to keep her shit together anyday.

I haven’t yet read the comments, but does anyone else see the hypocrisy of this site? One day you’re saying women shouldn’t be objectified, that women shouldn’t need to strip down for whatever reason etc, and now you’re applauding a lingerie show. How is this not objectifying women? I have nothing against models, I know it’s their job to model (who’d have known!) clothes, but I really have something against women parading around in their knickers and feeling “empowered”. Miranda Kerr is gorgeous, and seems like a genuinely lovely, down to earth person, but why do we hold her (and others) in such high esteem as a national icon and role model, when all she really does is wear underwear on a catwalk and is paid millions to do it? This isn’t a personal attack on Miranda, just a question from someone who though we lived in a world where women could be praised for their brains and work and contribution to society, rather than how hot they look in lingerie.

      Hey Chelsea,
Thanks for your comment. What I personally like about working at MM is that we can cover so many different topics in a day that our audience might be interested in. Everything’s up for discussion here, whether we’re looking at the fashion at one of the world’s most popular – and over-the-top – fashion shows, or applauding Kate Ellis’ work towards equality of women (which we also posted about yesterday). Hope that made sense :)

I really just don’t see how a site that claims to be about feminism and female empowerment and very against the objectification of women, as well as Mia’s very strong stance on body image, deem it appropriate to applaud a show that does nothing more that objectify women and make those who don’t look as amazing as those genetically blessed models feel inadequate. Sure, everything is up for discussion, but do we really need to talk about an ostentatious, waste of money fashion show? Really? How about some articles on female scientists? Or lawyers? Or women who are using their brains to do good, rather than strutting down a catwalk to be oggled by men?

I am so sick and tired of the fun police ruining every fun article we see on this site. They are not there to be oggled by men. VS is a company that sells products only for women. I am a woman and love looking at these gorgeous women. If you don’t like, here’s an idea, skip this story and go read a “serious” one. Or you can always visit a website that is dedicated solely to cancer research or corporate law.

I am highly educated and work in medical research, every day of my life I am surrounded by female scientists, doctors and surgeons so the last thing I need when I am trying to relax is read more about female scientists. Life isn’t just about serious stuff, some of here have enough science and law in our lives as it is so give us a break if we occasionally want to look at gorgeous girls strutting their stuff.

And hey, I’m a scientist too. I just wish the media would talk more about women who use their brains, instead of worshipping lingerie models. I wonder how many people could name a few female scientists or doctors? I think most would struggle, while they’d be able to list countless models.

How many people do you think can name this year’s Nobel Prize winners? Probably very few, yet so many people worship these models as if they’ve made some amazing discoveries that will help the world. One of last year’s winners was an Aussie woman, why don’t we worship her? Most people don’t even know her name. And what about the inspirational Aussie female surgeon who invented spray on skin, do many people know who she is? The sad answer is no. And I could say the same about so many other women in other fields, like business and law and international politics and humanitarian work.
I just think its ridiculous that as a society we absolutely idolise models, who strut around in ridiculously priced underwear in an ostentatious squillion dollar show – for what? To sell products we probably don’t need.

I definitely agree with this, articles posted on MM open the debate up for discussion but in this particular case there hasn’t really been any analysis from MM about how to reconcile posting a critical response to Ricki-Lee’s Maxim spread and then subsequently publishing a piece celebrating women parading in lingerie.

The two criticisms of Ricki-Lee apply here:

        1. the influence this has on young girls (of which I would say Miranda Kerr has)
        2. more broadly, that society says it is desirable, aspirational and empowering to get your kit off

And yet we haven’t heard anything about how VS as an insitution represents some seriously questionable attitudes about women.

Beautiful women have a way of bringing out the worst in the MM community. This post has got it all, Miranda bashing, skinny bashing, model bashing and even America bashing. Jealousy is such a bi*ch.

I wish I was super thin, six foot tall and had a stunning face so I can make millions of dollars by walking on a runway, but I’m not and that’s okay, however this is no reason to hate those who were lucky to be born this way.

      J,
I have to disagree with you. Dismissing the kinds of conversations we have about how women are portrayed in the media and in popular culture as “jealousy” is so simplistic as to be insulting.
Asking questions and challenging ideas around female beauty and what it means to be talented or sexy are all complex matters. There isn’t necessarily a right and wrong and you’ll find in most cases, jealousy has NOTHING to do with it.
I love to look at images of other women – more than I like to look at men, frankly. I’m not jealous that someone is more beautiful or thin or young than me.
And I certainly don’t hate anyone. These kinds of issues are always much bigger picture than the actions of any individual or even any group.
I wish there was more diversity on this catwalk, sure. TOTALLY. But I still like looking at the images. And I’m clear about the fact that these girls are lingerie models who are modelling lingerie. Nothing strange about that.

Mia, I agree with most of what you’ve said here. I was referring more to the comments along the lines “shiny skeletons, ” “thanks for making me as a new mother feel good about myself,” “none of them are anywhere near my shape” etc etc. I totally agree that in most cases jealousy is not the answer, and I’m all for a good discussion on this topic but when I read petty comments such as these, jealousy and insecurity are the only explanations that come to mind.

        Carly,
Let me answer your question. We are always looking for content that will engage our audience. We’re a pretty good barometer ourselves, the editorial team and if something peaks our interest, it’s usually a sign that the wider MM audience will also want to see/read it.
We have three measures of the ‘success’ of a post – by which we mean audience engagement. One is page views, the second is comments and the third is facebook shares.
It’s very easy for us to see what interests our readers and what leaves them a bit meh.
Is our aim to publish content that interests people? Hell yeah. That’s what we’re here for. But we certainly don’t go out of our way to start arguments or cause controversy. Because trust me, it’s not worth it.
So no, nobody is being played.
We give our audience much greater respect than that because they’re too smart to be mindless pawns.

These women are lingerie models posing in lingerie for a lingerie company. Totally different. It’s in context!
The problem with singers and actors getting their clothes off is that it has nothing to do with their actual jobs!!!!
Duh. Why don’t people get this?

      GD Star Rating

      • Bryter

Yes, this is a lingerie company that has no presence in Australia. So why is MM writing about it? They’ve fallen hook, line and sinker for the free promotion that Victoria’s Secret is craving.

Sorry, but your job title argument doesn’t fly with me. No-one is saying that Angelina Jolie shouldn’t be posing on the cover of a magazine because she’s an “actor” and it’s not part of her actual job. Promotion and PR are part of every entertainer’s job.

You seriously can’t see the difference? Ricki-Lee is a (ahem) singer, the VS girls are models. Ricki-Lee shouldn’t need to flaunt her body in her knickers to further her career, the VS girlshave a career that depends on them flaunting their bodies knickers and bras.

If Ricki-Lee was posing in a women’s magazine, wearing a particular brand of undies, with the aim of enticing women to buy them, that would be unremarkable.

Contrary to popular belief, there are women out there who look like that (I have a few in my family) Though I would like to see a mix of ladies closer to my body type (a Aussie size 10-12) these women seem beautiful on the inside, which makes a massive difference to how I view VS. I loved seeing Miranda smile when Orlando stood and clapped for her, and the girls all had huge smiles on their faces as they showed off their beauty. Loved it!

I don’t care what the dictionary says, Ricki Lee is a singer, or at least she’s supposed to be, whereas VS women are models, not just models but underwear models. I don’t see the point of comparing the two.

The point of comparing the two is this:
Why is it ok for Miranda to get her kit off for a living, but not for Ricki-Lee who is also doing it for money?
If a singer puts on underwear and has her album cover taken in it would you bitch and moan about that? Maybe. But not as much as all the hoopla that started when Ricki-Lee did just that for a magazine.

Porn star, armature porn star, same bag.
Singer, singer on the weekend but works in a law firm during the week, same bag.
Model, models sometimes, apparently not the same bag.

Sammie – just because you pose for some pictures and even if you get paid, you don’t have ‘model’ on your passport.
Models are mannequins – paid to wear clothes – or underwear in the case of the VS Angels.
If the president of a bank or a politician posed in underwear for a men’s mag, that would be strange. But somehow if your’e a singer it’s just expected. That is WRONG.

This is ridiculous to me…so to pose in your underwear without being anti feminist you must first take up the occupation of lingerie model and THAT is the context by which we measure it and say its ok?! I don’t think thats the point of the show. The VS show is known for being theatrical and sort of like a performance – I don’t think anyone expects to buy any of that stuff, just like no one expects to buy most of the stuff that is in fashion shows – think of VS like haute couture for underwear.
