Here’s a list of things I would rather do than wear a pair of skinny jeans:
1. PRETTY
2. MUCH
3. EVERYTHING.
Yep. The fashion world may have told us for what seems like for-ev-ah that skinny jeans were hot hot hot but someone forgot to send that memo to my thighs. Put my pins in a spare of skinny jeans and my legs immediately look like ice-cream cones (albeit denim flavoured). It hasn’t so much been a case of “I’m just not that into you”. More a case of “I just can’t get into you. Even lying down. Wearing Nancy Gantz Pants and sucking my stomach in on the bed.”
My preferred jeans are boot cut. Actually that’s a lie. My preferred jeans are maternity ones with big elastic wasit-bands. But definitely my second-pick when it comes to jeans, is boot cut. And it seems I’m not alone.
According to the gods of eBay: boot cut jeans outsell every other jeans style. All of ‘em. The Daily Mail Online reports:
“An infographic released by eBay today shows that sales of the classic bootcut jean far exceed sales of any other style – no matter how fashionable.
Among the 3 million pairs of jeans purchased in the U.S. on the online auction site over the past year, 793,289 pairs were bootcut – over three times more than the next best-selling style. Straight leg (215,353 pairs sold) and skinny jeans (214,405), which are typically more favoured by the style set, took second and third place respectively, but denim leggings, or ‘jeggings’, the latest style to hit the market, came in tenth place with just 11,616 pairs sold.
Flares, which have made a comeback over the past year, thanks to the fashion trend for all things Seventies, came in fourth place with 197,790 pairs purchased by eBay users. Low-rise waistbands, which have waned in popularity since the return of high-waists to the fashion spotlight, took the fifth spot, beating beat boyfriend jeans, which came eighth with just 30,438 pairs sold.”
It just gives me so, so much pleasure to know that jeggings came in 10th place.
So why are boot cut jeans so popular? (That’s rhetorical. We all know it’s because in comparison skinny jeans are evil). But also because while fashion trends come and go, boot cut jeans are the most flattering style and likely to suit most body shapes. Three cheers for that.
So what’s your favourite style of jeans? How many pairs do you own? And hands up if you would secretly just like to wear a muu-muu?
We’ve put together a jeans gallery including everything – bootleg, skinny, flares, cargos, cocktail… Enjoy!

Yey! Finally somebody said it! I am so sick of skinny jeans! I am not a large person, but no way can I even contemplate wearing them. Plus, they look uncomfortable. I’ve seen some fabulous brightly coloured jeans and pants in the shops lately, relieved to see some colour for winter, only to be disappointed that they are skinny leg! Urghhh!
It’s boot cut for me all the way here!

I’m what is considered skinny…yet even I can’t pull off skinny jeans due to my skinny (almost invisible) calf muscles. I look like a twit in them, yet I have seen women that are a lot curvier than me rocking the look! It doesn’t matter what size you are, only what shape. I have to wear bootcut in order to fool people in to thinking that there is something shapely going on under that denim. In my ideal world, I’d wear nothing but palazzo pants!

Have just done the mental denim count- 9 pairs, all skinny, some high-waisted, some far from it. Seems I haven’t bought or worn a pair of non-skinny jeans in the last six years.

Target straight leg jeans for me. Has a high enough rise so my coin slot doesn’t show when I am sitting, enough elastic to be comfortable and all for $30. I have huge calves so I’ve never been able to get skinny jeans over my knees!!!
As for bootcut – they don’t work on me. I’m really short (158cm) and everytime I bought bootcut jeans, I would have to get them hemmed up. Problem was, where the jean is meant to slightly curve in, it wasn’t in the right spot and landed on my calves which made me look stumpy.

I’m with you Bec. Skinny jeans turn my otherwise acceptable pins into denim sausages.

The problem with this statistic is that it’s not a reporting of all jeans sold, it’s a reporting of jeans sold off eBay!, which means that, if anything, it proves that when buying jeans on eBay, boot cut is the most popular style. I own roughly twenty pairs of jeans, none of which were boot cut, and none of which were purchased online.
This data is interesting, and it says a lot of things, but it doesn’t prove outright that boot cuts are the most popular style.

Skinny all the way! I have long, skinny, legs, so skinny jeans and jeggings look great on me, though I will be selective about the jeggings. I used to be a boot-cut girl, but once I went skinny, I never looked back – my “lazy days” outfit is a rock-chick T-shirt and skinny jeans, and my favourite pair is http://www.modcloth.com/Modcloth/Womens/-Coolest-Girl-in-School-Jeans

I have short, skinny legs, I LOVE bootcut jeans with sky high heels, makes my legs look like they would give Miranda Kerr a run for her money

I love my new high waisted NYDJ (not your daughters jeans). I am 26yo and these are comfortable and nice looking straight leg jeans, they don’t cut your tummy in half and also fit well around the bum. Definitely recommend, just google NYDJ for stockists. They have nice bootleg cuts as well

I tend to prefer boot cut jeans, I’m a girl with hips and a butt regardless of my size and, thanks to Australian clothing stores, hated jeans shopping as a result.
So I’ve just come to Colombia and LADIES here you buy your jeans if you are like me!!! They LOVE butts and their jeans here, I don’t know what it is about them but everyone (and I mean everywoman of every shape and size you can imagine that I have seen in the exact same jeans as me) looks great in them. First time I put on a pair of jeans and loved my figure!! Yay Colombia!!
All for $30 a pair

Bootlegs are not very flattering on me. I have skinny legs but carry all my weight around my waist. Skinny jeans and a baggy empire line top all the way thanks!

I bought skinny cocktail jeans in Vegas *hides head in shame*

Pain of jeans shopping > pain of togs shopping. Enough said.
loading...
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I rest my case.
I have been watching speechlessly as seemingly every other person, male or female have embraced skinny jeans, with about 2% looking good and comfortable in them. Meanwhile I’ve stubbornly kept my boot cuts. It feels good to know that so many agree, and that there definitely is still a market, and that I will be able to find a new pair when these ones die.

Skinny jeans are by far the most flattering and sexy jean. Flares are hideous and even Posh can’t pull them off. And that’s sayin something.
loading...
Seriously? The most flattering? to you personally maybe but to a huge percentage of buyers no way!
loading...
I have large calf muscles and therefore no chance of ever fitting into skinny jeans! I have an hourglass figure and can’t beat Target stretch flares (not massive flares and fitted nicely up top) or Shape Your Body bootlegs. Even when I could afford the “better” brands I still ended up back at Target because they fit like they were made for me.
loading...
I hate jeans. I refuse to wear jeans. They cut into all my tummy fat and are seriously uncomfortable. I can’t sit, I can’t walk, I can’t even breathe!!
I haven’t worn a pair of jeans in about 3 years and really don’t want to either!
loading...
Same, same and same! The legs are too long, the waist is never long enough and there’s always at least an inch between the waist of the jeans and the small of my back.
Hate, hate, hate them.
loading...
My fav jeans are now 6 years old and look like new despite being worn heaps! They are from Morgan & Spencer so had to buy others here in Oz and love Target jeans!!! Target you rock for jeans, cords, capris and work pants….shaped for my bum not shapeless bums!
loading...
My favs are always either flare or boot leg. Never tried skinny leg, but don’t think they’d suit my aah generous booty and theighs!! As for the mumu….. just bought my first pair of fisherman pants, and they are the bomb!! Just a pity I can’t wear them out….
loading...
Fisherman pants?? Are they like waders??
loading...
I still love skinny leg jeans, or straight leg, all with a mid-rise. Cause, well, you know, when I’m down on the floor playing with kids or doing craft at their little table, I like to keep my bits and pieces nice and covered
loading...
I bought my first pair of skinny jeans last week from Atlanta in the US. ‘to honor that booty and hug that little waist’ said the label. Now the women who wear skinny jeans there aren’t really thin. They just go for it and it looks great! But the US sizing Is better with way more sizes, so more people can probably find skinny jeans that fit.
loading...
As a hippy big bummed girl I find that boot cut balance out my figure best
I have straight leg ones too but do look best in boot cut
No offense to skinny leg lovers out there but I don’t think anyone looks good in them. Makes everyone look like they have bigger bottoms than they really do!
loading...
I hate jeans shopping. So when I find a style that suits me, I buy a couple of pairs and wear them out.
At the moment I have four pairs, three of them wearable. The fourth have holes in them that I haven’t patched yet.
I have two pairs of skinny jeans and two pairs of straight legs. I don’t like bootcut or flares, since I like them to be straight around my calf.
loading...
I rarely wear bootlegs anymore. I’m wearing them today. Spooky co-incidence or subliminal effect of reading this post last night?
Woo-woo.
loading...
I like skinny jeans (mid-rise) and straight leg. I only have dark navy and black though. I sometimes go back and buy the exact same jeans but I do have some variety. Actually, I sometimes buy two of the same tops and shoes etc. I’m not skinny but I am tall and I find the skinny jeans really comfortable and I think they look better. The last pair of bootleg jeans I bought will be my last. I’d definitely continue to buy straight leg jeans in future.

God please can we loose the ‘wait, what?’ type lines on the title of every second blog on here. Wait. Yes i’m serious.

You don’t like our headlines this week? Wait, what?

It’s still better than ‘Just sayin’..bblluurrggghhhh

Oh, I love boot-leg jeans. Mainly because I wear big chunky boots. A lot! But also because I have… generous thighs, and anything tapered just makes them look ginormous. But bootleg in a dark denim, and suddenly I’ve got legs a mile long and, more importantly, I FEEL good.
loading...
I not-at-all-secretly do wear muu-muus. I love em. My husband does not. I would also like a little burqa style thingo to flip on for school runs when feeling decidedly shabby.
loading...
I love mid rise (to avoid the muffin top) straight leg. I really don’t thnk bootcut look as flattering as people might think they do. I also find bootcut quite flary in some brands and impossible to wear long boots over which I do pretty much all winter. I’ve pretty much lived in my pair of Jag mid rise regular fit straight legs for over a year. They now have a hole in the knee and need to be replaced. I’m considering just going into the shop and getting the same ones off the shelf, even though it’s tempting to try other styles.
Skinny legs jeans only look good on tall skinny women.
loading...
Nah. I love skinny jeans, I own a few pairs, and I hate boot cuts, they don’t flatter me at all. Different styles for different bodies.
loading...
I’ve never been able to find jeans that flatter me so for a long time I didn’t wear them. I’m quite short and small but curvy. I now have three pairs which I love: Target skinny jeans are the only skinny jeans I feel comfortable in. I also have two pairs of Levi’s Curve ID, demi-curve, in a straight cut. Narrower than the bootcut and they don’t look as dated, with a mid-rise which is really comfortable and flattering.

Speaking of jeans, check out this story…will definitely avoid said store in the future.

Hilarious! Not surprising either. ‘Chris is a retail superstar’ bwhahaha.
It’s kind of a shame they are so aggressive, I have bought a dress from there before and it’s the pushiest service I’ve encountered. I actually liked the over the top style for balls and events when I was at uni, but was put off by the buying experience.
loading...
Oh Camie, such a shame you had a similar experience, although clearly not to that extent! it always amazes me how ‘ high fashion’ sales staff think they’re somehow exempt from illustrating common civility. So very rude!
loading...
Lol, Gasp is about as far from ‘high fashion’ as you can get.

Exactly! Don’t care if it’s Vivienne Westwood or Target, belittling a customer based on their weight or taste is not on.

I think I missed the memo about how skinny jeans are only for skinny people. I have lost 15kg this year (Hurrah!) and am loving wearing skinny jeans again. But I’m not skinny. I literally “woo-hoo’d” the second I could get back into size 14s and am now hovering between a 12 and a 14 (first time in 12 years – YEAH BABY) – and those skinny jeans are like my best friend.
If my butt looks big in them, just do me a favour and don’t tell me. ‘Cos I think I look awesome.
loading...
There are four types of jeans I believe:
1. They look awesome, but are wildly uncomfortable (I own 2 pairs)
2. They look vile, but are super comfy (I own 3 pairs)
3. They look vile and are also wildly uncomfortable (I own 28 pairs)
4. They look awesome and are super comfy (possibly a myth. I own none)
Personally I have long held the quiet conviction that hardly anyone looks good in jeans.
loading...
I HATE bootleg jeans! They kind of remind me of flares, neither of which flatter me. I’ve read so many magazine articles telling me that those two styles are the most flattering for my shape but it’s utter BS- instead of “balancing” my thighs I think it makes them look bigger. Straight leg are the way to go, or skinnies but only if they are mid rise (seriously girls, if you haven’t already you should get all over mid-rise – they make your legs look looooooooong!). And ALWAYS in a dark wash! Generally I’ve gone with just jeans/ sportsgirl, both of which I’ve found are a good balance between style and cost! UGH jeans shopping is the pits though!
loading...
Bootcut jeans are the devil. They make me look and feel fat. I just dont like them! I have one pair of boyfriend jeans that I never wear for the same reason and one pair of not too ridiculous flares that I can only wear with heels because yet again they make me look chunky.
Skinny jeans all the way for me! And im an hourglass shape with short legs, but they just seem to work for me, especially with a higher rise (as it makes my legs look longer).
And no, I would never EVER want to wear a muu muu. Miu miu on the other hand…
loading...
I actually hate bootcut jeans. I don’t find them flattering at all. I think they look good on very tall women, but they make me look chunky and even shorter than I am. Plus I think they look kind of daggy, and they can’t be dressed up as well as straight or skinny jeans. Even wide leg jeans are better than bootcut. No one should wear flares.
I also love skinny jeans because I can wear them with flats or sneakers without needing to take them up, or wear boots over them without having to find room for all that excess fabric.

My sister is raving about her new Levi ‘Curve ID’ jeans and says they are the best jeans – EVER! – and can’t wait for me to try hers on to see what I think. I currently brush aside my huge collection of denims and reach for my fav Target jeans every other day.
Unless it has some ergonomically designed, high-tech wizardry installed, the general rule is the bigger and lower the back pockets, the smaller and higher your bottom will look. …And you’re right bootcut are the best!

If you are in Sydney, head to Birkenhead point. Levis curve id jeans for $24.50!!!
loading...
I have 2 pairs of curve id’s, bootleg and straight leg. I love them. I also love my straight leg high rise jeans west tummy control jeans. So flattering. I have flares (1 pair) with cool flowers on the outside of the legs, very 70s and jeggings (don’t hate me) which I wear with boots and tunics.
loading...
I love my Levi Curve IDs. Everyone has commented on how much weight I’ve lost since I’ve had them (correct answer -none). Super flattering and comfy.
loading...
I have one of pretty much everytype ( except jeggings, i do have some taste!), but I love my bootcuts the most. everytme i wear them people thik i have lost weight cos they make my bum and thighs look tiny! and they go with pretty much everything.
loading...
I have 2 pairs of jeans west curve embracer jeans too, and the fit is great and they are comfortable to wear. I am 183cm tall, full figured and have 2 munchkins so squishy belly and aformentioned muffin issues.
loading...
I won’t go near skinny jeans! Personally I think they are only flattering on the super tall and super skinny!!
I love my bootcuts. They are the only style that suits my awkward body shape. Big thighs and pudgy post baby belly… I used to be on the eternal mission to find the perfect jean. Now post baby I don’t even bother and just wish I could fit into the jeans that I used to be able to wear.
loading...
Skinnys from Target, the only midrise jean that understands that just because I have wide hips, doesn’t mean I have big thighs.
That or their shape your body range, straight leg style. But they are -always- sold out of my size. Always. But seriously, sexiest, looks like weight loss, awesome jeans ever.
loading...
I love Target jeans! I discovered their skinnies this year and wore them to DEATH over winter with knee-high boots – I was warm and comfy and the boots balanced out my butt. I could wear them like a more serious version of leggings. I agree with you – they are trick-of-the-light fantastic!
loading...
I really need to go and check out Target’s range of jeans!
loading...
and they are cheap…still hellish shopping there – only 5 items thanks maam…. and shhhh they have a bit of stretch in them – or do they all? show’s how much iknow about anything…
loading...
I’m jumping on the Target bandwagon. The only brand of jeans that I own now. They understand that not everyone has really long legs and make the ‘short’ range. This minor adjustment means it is the first time in my life that jeans actually flatter me. Not only are they inexpensive to begin with, I don’t have to pay to have them taken up. I have bootcut and skinny in all ranges of colours, because I can. I’ve paid as little as $15 for a pair.
loading...
100% agree
Always get compliments on my jeans on casual fridays.
Happy to admit they are from target, or as a mum would say “Tarjay”
loading...
My Target jeans are my only skinny jeans and I love them. So comfortable, they fit where they’re supposed to fit and I only have to roll them up an inch or so instead of having many inches taken off the hem (I’m short). Love them.
loading...
i used to adore target jeans, but I am a size 6. Their size 6 is tiny, their size 8 swims on me. Ridiculous.
loading...
Perhaps you are a 7 in jeans, like me. The world needs to embrace size 7! We exist!
loading...
Dotti do great slim leg or skinny with 7 & 9!
Mock me for Dotti if you will but their black jeans last forever – longer than my lee’s!
loading...
Jay Jays have heaps of great jeans in size 7
loading...
The J Brand cargo/jeans shown a few times are the most flattering (Jessica Alba pic) – I have got to get me a pair of them!
loading...
i don’t own jeans. i have a small waist and big hips, and i’ve yet to find jeans that work for me. i have a pair of cord flares that are cool, but i mostly prefer cargos or skirts.
loading...
I too have a smaller waist than hips (amazing for a woman to have hips, isn’t it? But you would swear that jeans manufacturers haven’t heard of them). The best and most flattering jeans are from Hudson (many different cuts, and many classics) but unfortunately you pay a lot for them.
loading...
well we’ll live longer. bigger hip-to-waist ratio is associated with longer lifespan.
i’m 70cm in the waist, 82cm in the hip
eta: checked out hudson jeans. they look amazing. is wide leg really daggy, cos they look hot to me.
loading...
Yay!
loading...
Actually I think you’ve got it the wrong way round. Your waist to hip ratio is 0.85 – the ideal ratio is about 0.7!
From http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/tools/hip_to_waist/hip_to_waist.shtml
A high ratio of 0.85 to 0.9 shows that you have centrally stored fat and are at increased risk of disease compared to someone with no central fat.
loading...
*92cm. sorry. typo.

They do exist! pzijeans.com is amazing!
They’re designed for us hourglass/pear girls.
All my jeans now come from there and they are phenomenal!
loading...
Yay the boot and straight cuts! Reassuring to see that there is still some sense left in the world… and when I can, I buy mine from Gap. Great price, love the different leg lengths and styles, always wear well.
Sadly, my 9yo is OBSESSED with her jeggings. She has the most beautiful tight bottom and long skinny legs and looks wonderful in jeans but apparently “I can feel them (jeans) too much”. Ideally, she’d go nude. Jeggings is (only just) the better option.
loading...
Your daughter is spot on with the universal problem with jeans when she says, ‘I can feel them too much.’ We hear you, little sister.
If the jeggings are killing you, then you have to buy her some very special long tops/short dresses/tunics, or whatever the hip word it for that item is, to go over those jeggings.
loading...
Oh, Mother R, I like your style. That is EXACTLY what I’ve done! If she has to wear jeggings, it can only be (a) at home with the front door locked or (b) hidden under a lovely tunic type top, so that if I squint they look like leggings.
I miss seeing her lovely little bottom in option (b) though. Is that wrong? So pert, so high. Such bottoms are horribly wasted on 9 year olds!
loading...
No, it’s not wrong to marvel at your child’s bottom in that context. I look at my child’s body and think how amazing it is that there is just bone, then firm flesh and then skin, with no lumpy bits between!
loading...
Ex-actly. You get it
loading...
I always manage to find the perfect pair of jeans when they are on sale and no longer available after I buy the last pair…case in point, the pair I am trying desperately not to wear out are last season Sportsgirl, some kind of skinny leg, perfect blue wash, cover my butt completely and fit me everywhere because they’re a size 7 and THAT’s MY SIZE…not 6, not 8 but a SEVEN.
A boot cut is great if the flare starts from the right place. Cut is everything in jeans.
loading...
That’s like a very mild superpower – always finding the perfect jeans on sale!
loading...
True!
loading...
I detest bootcuts. I have thighs but not hips and bootcuts make me look enormous. And daggy. I like to buy skinny jeans that are a size too big and get the waist taken in, or straight jeans. But not daggy Mumsy straight jeans. I do, however, like a mid rise because I’m old. Nearly 40. And had a 10 pound baby through the emergency exit. Low rise are not for moi!
I don’t actually mind jeggings. I wear them myself. BUT ONLY UNDER DRESSES OR VERY LONG TUNICS AND ONLY ONES MADE OF REAL DENIM!!!! Those faux printed ones are just gak.
However, I can see that on people who have wider hips, balancing out their figure with a bootcut is ideal. I don’t think bootcuts are daggy on other people (well, not all the time anyway) but I dislike them intensely on me.
I’m kind of an hourglass but with narrow hips. My hips are a size smaller than my waist and my boobs are two sizes bigger than my waist and I have a booty. You can see why I wear dresses most of the time!
My favourite jeans are Levi Curve ID in Demi Straight. Recent purchase. I also love my daggy skinny jean leggings from KMart. I have them in three colours and they were a tenner apiece. I wear them under dresses and tunics and they’re made of actual denim and look like jeans. I love ‘em!
I have about 30 other pairs (I live within a 5 minute radius of 8 op shops / vintage boutiques and an outlet centre!) and almost none of them ever fit.
loading...
You’re not alone with the jeggings. I wear them like you, but with boots too.
loading...
I’m 182cm. Notify jeans r super long. Straight leg for me or Paige flared leg.

My friend swears by unico jeans. They are Japanese. Apparently they are heat treated so they never lose their shape. She has quite a large bottom area and they look fantastic! Does anyone know if they are available in Australia?
loading...
do you mean jeans from the shop called UNIQLO?
loading...
Maybe. I was having trouble googling them.
loading...
That’s a great expression: ‘quite a large bottom area’.
loading...
Uniqlo? I heard a rumour that they’re coming to Australia soon.
loading...
I bloody love Uniqlo – I have about seven pairs of Uniqlo jeans. They are v reasonably priced and do have fab sizing but their black jeans lose their colour ridiculously fast and personally I think they lose their shape like most cheaper jeans. Yay for coming to Australia if true – they are a fantastic brand.

ooohhh – they are a ‘comin!

Love Bootleg jeans generally and will wear them most of the time except if i want to wear flats or thongs, then i’ll wear a straight leg. Most of my jeans come from Target as they do a short leg length which fits me perfectly. i hate having to get jeans taken up as it ruins the flow/style of the bottom of them. I would never wear skinny, my hips just won’t allow it and i’m never going near “jeggings”. they look cute on 2y/o but that’s about it!

I just bought my first ever pair of skinny jeans last weekend, I’ve lost a tiny bit of weight (5kg – not enough for people to really even notice given how I carry it) & am IN LOVE with the skinny jeans!! I’m annoyed I didnt try them earlier. I think its because I’m built – well – like a man (!) & am straight up and down.
Anyway – LOL – just to give the skinnies a fan!
