We’ve all had our lashes tinted at the hairdresser or salon for 10 bucks.

Some of us (the brave ones) have even had our lashes permed.

And I’d say a fair smack of us have tried lash extensions, which are essentially false lashes that are glued into place and which fall out with your natural lash cycle over 10-14 days. (I generally get lash extensions for holidays – you wake up looking far more attractive than one should in the morning and with zero effort whatsoever, and all you need is base, cheeks and lips and you’re out the door and off to ogle nude statues before you can say fig leaf.)

But has anyone tried lash coating yet?

Welcome to the latest fad in our perennial quest for bigger, curlier, longer, thicker lashes. Also known as ‘semi-permanent mascara’, lash coating is kind of like traditional lash tinting crossed with waterproof mascara, on Red Bull.

You get lovely darkened lashes, plus definition, thickness and curl, and it will not come off at the gym, running, swimming or while sobbing gently at Meg Ryan movies. Lash coating is excellent for making your eyes stand out, (even if/especially if you don’t wear makeup) and can be done on the top and bottom lashes, although in my opinion very few people can pull of bottom-lash mascara.

The process takes 30-60 minutes in the salon, and even sensitive eyes can play along. They will clean then curl the lashes, then dip them in a special coating of dye and fibres, then seal them, and zing zam zap, you’re done. Obviously, the appeal is… obvious. Looking made up every day without applying any eye makeup, and no restraint on physical (or tear duct) activity, is definitely going to trump mascara that smudges and runs and flakes.

You can have it applied to your natural lashes, or over lash extensions (oooh, get you!) and how thick and dramatic it is, is up to you. From the few women I know who’ve tried it, it’s definitely better to ask for the ‘natural’ look first, (1 -2 coats) before the more full on ‘mascara’ look, which is a coat or two more. Unless you love the heavy eye makeup look, and are 21 and can carry it off, in which case, knock yourself out and have four coats straight up. I advise thoroughly explaining the exact look you’re after, and how natural/dramatic you want it, so that you don’t go home with what you believe to be clumpy, thick, irritating paint on your eyelashes instead of naturally luscious, ebony eye curtains.

Screen shot 2012 08 07 at 10.22.52 AM More sleep. Less time putting on make up. Heres how.

Zoe Foster, (unbelievably) with no mascara.

For the lady in the purple blouse asking in the second row, lash coating should be removed professionally by the dame or chap who applied it once it’s started looking a bit patchy. This is so you don’t damage your lashes trying to scratch/rip/melt/wizard the coating off yourself. However, some have said you can actually remove it at home with a careful session of oil-based-makeup removery. Some.

Brands like CryBaby, LashDip, and Flutter Eyes are huge in the UK and US, while in Australia we have Mesmereyez, LashCoat, MYscara and StudioLASH – all of which are relatively embryonic at this point, and none of which I have tried yet, and so am unable to comment on. (If you have, holler below.) You can bet your banana I will be trying it when I am back on Strayan soil, though.

Fun fact! Almost-due pregnant women who know they’ll soon have little to no time for grooming are mad for lash coating, so too Asian women, whose straight lashes respond very nicely to the curling and coating.

One version of semi permanent mascara I have tried though, is Diego Dalla Palma Semi Permanent Mascara. You apply it like normal mascara for five days in a row to build up the pigment, and this waterproof ‘lash dye’ stays on lashes for up to two weeks. It might not give enough BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! for big lash fans, but is pretty perfect for women who are low-maintenance, prefer the natural look, are lazy, or off on a summery holiday.

It can be removed easily with a dual-phase (oil and water) makeup remover. Mine hasn’t come off in the shower or swimming or even when wiping a haphazard makeup wipe over my eyes and it’s been 12 days. It’s not available in Australia (yet! Fingers and legs crossed!), but you can buy here with free international shipping and maybe, just maybe, when summer peeps her glorious, golden head around the corner shortly, you will.

No – I was about to but then realised I didn’t understand this bit of the article: ‘It can be removed easily with a dual-phase (oil and water) makeup remover.’ Can someone explain to me what a dual-phase makeup remover is, what brands make it and for what cost – and where to buy some?

Do let us know when you receive your mascara het. What date did you order yours?

I ordered it on 7 Aug, and it was dispatched the same day.
I think a dual phase cleanser would be something like Dermalogica Precleanse, it’s an oil based cleanser that emulsifies with water. That would be my interpretation of it anyway.
Will let you know if my mascara turns up!

dual phase remover is the type with two layers in the bottle, lots of brands make them, from lancomes bi-facil to l’oreal and nivea.

Zoe! You’re like a ninja – mind reader – eyelash fairy – dream granter! (Actually a real thing. As of now). I’m lucky enough to have very long and dark eye lashes naturally, but (and I think someone else mentioned this) applying mascara is a pain in the ass. It always gets all on my eyelid and under my eyebrows if I don’t give it enough time to dry. So I have to stand there armed with a cotton bud in case of such happenings (almost daily). I wear mascara religiously – top and bottom – because I think it makes me eyes pop…but my only concern with this would be, do you think it would be TOO dark? I wouldn’t want to have Kardashianesque eyes happening, you know?

Hate to say it but we all haven’t had our lashes tinted, never had that done, never want to have that done. The thought of that, lashes being permed, extended or coated sounds completely terrifying to me. Then again the nearest salon that could do anything to my lashes is 100km away and given that you have to wait a month to get a haircut it could be forever to get any of that done. I have also never plucked my eyebrows and as for makeup…yeah no idea on how to put on eye liner, never tried, never want to, last put on any make up probably four years ago and that’s probably the only time I’ve put on makeup in the last ten years. No good in the heat and humidity and just not interested.

Actually tinted eyelashes is really good in heat and humidity, unlike mascara it doesn’t come off.
If you’re not interested in make up then this article probably isn’t going to do much for you, but if you wanted to experiment at home it’s not too hard to tint your eyebrows, and once you get them shaped once you can pretty much just follow that shape. Eyebrows make a huge difference to your overall face.
I’m sure you could probably tint eyelashes at home but I wouldn’t be game to.

I had Mesmereyez done and hated it severely! I thought it would make my lashes look like I was wearing my best mascara but they weren’t longer in anyway, if anything they looked shorter because there was no softness to them at all.

Was so gutted as I was aiming to be able to throw some mineral powder on my face with some gloss on my lips and be ‘done’. Completely scared me off trying anything like this again.

Zoe, I love watching your videos and reading all of your articles, but with three primary aged children, a full time job and a husband fighting for the bathroom in the morning, my make-up routing IS less than five minutes.

Now actually do need to put a bit of cover I really do need a quick way of doing my makeup. Can you shadow a mum for a couple of mornings and figure it out for me? 9. Less Lashes

Hi girls, I’m a beauty writer and have had the lash coating procedure twice. It looks amazing when it’s fresh and you’ll feel pretty darn foxy when you walk out of the clinic! And you can sweat, swim, rub and it won’t come off. Certainly cuts back on your getting ready time!

However I personally wouldn’t really recommend it unless perhaps you’re going on a tropical island holiday for about a week or ten days AND you make sure you get the SPM professionally removed as soon as you get home. Don’t leave it too long.

If you get it done, book an early morning appointment to give the coating plenty of time to dry in the day and to minimise your chances of lashes sticking together. I had mine done in the late afternoon and the next morning when I woke up I had mushed some of the lashes together in my sleep. Some were bent, some crumpled, others stuck-together. Overall it didn’t seem like anything to worry about initially, but when they started to grow out the trouble started. The clumped-together lashes tugged (irritating and painful) and towards the end I had instances where I looked in the mirror and could see five or six lashes hanging off in a clump, the tips still attached to the SPM but the base pulled out of the follicles – eeek! I was gritting my teeth steering myself for sparser lashes when I looked in the mirror after having it professionally removed. All-up I lost about a quarter of my lashes.

So yes it does look super but in my opinion I’d only try it again for a short holiday and I would get it removed professionally ASAP – don’t make my mistake and think you can wait for it to grow out or wear away!

I haven’t tried lash coating or extensions but I’m intrigued by the diego dalla parma. I’m tossing up whether to try it because other reviews are mixed.

It will have a lot to live up to because I do so love my Mirenesse mascara and haven’t used anything else for years. It tubes so it doesn’t smudge at all or come off until you take it off – with warm water, when the tubes just slide off. It’s also a 24 hour mascara and I’ve slept in it more than once (sshhh).

Still, the diego is actually cheaper than full-price Mirenesse so maybe I will give it a go.

I had a horrible eyelash extension experience – I had bought one of those daily deals and even though the business was very unprofessional and the service was terrible (waited for over an hour and no one seemed to know what was going on) I really liked the result the first time. Especially not needing mascara.

So because they’d offered to give me the same price again on a return visit, I went back…

This time the service was even worse – I was there for 3 hours (most of which was in the chair, so too late to escape!) and they gave me a lot more extensions… and a lot of them were glued together (not one extension per eyelash as they should be).

When my fake eyelashes started falling out they would take 4 or 5 natural ones with them each time – plus other fakes attached to more of my eyelashes!

I went to Priceline for some oil makeup remover and a customer who told me she was a beautician said she just uses olive oil…
    So…
I removed them with olive oil – and was left with about 5 short natural lashes on each eye. Total.

I wore eyeliner and eyeshadow to immitate eyelashes for the next 6 weeks.

    Definitely go to a professional.

    Definitely get them professionally removed.

Eeeek… I have heard of these horror stories from my Lash Specialist and she said she gets SO many people coming to her that have had a terrible job done. If you go to someone inexperienced and they use too much glue or put them on incorrectly it can actually damage your natural lash follicles. Scary stuff!

I’ve had eyelash extensions for over 12 months and couldn’t live without them! I get them done every 3 weeks at a fabulous lady who does them for a very reasonable price (about $60 for a refill). It’s great for people who have naturally short, fair lashes.

      Hi Alyssakt

Glad to know someone is as disenchanted by eyelash extensions as I am! I too purchased a scoopon for a full set of extensions and was horrified by the result.

The full set I had applied actually looked great – so much so that I went back after 2 weeks for the refills. This time however the trouble started. The ‘technichian’ responsible clearly had no experience. The pad they place under your eye for protection had obviously slipped down a little bit which resulted in my eyelashes becoming tangled together and me actually being unable to open my eye! The manager of the salon ended up coming in and (very painfully) untangling my lashes which resulted in about a quarter of my natural lashes being ripped out. To make matters worse, the lashes that did survive this ordeal looked horrible. The ‘technician’ bonded one extension to about 4 of my natural lashes which after further research I discovered was a huge no no. After my ordeal I went to my usual beauty salon to get the surviving extensions removed and my beautician was shocked by my story – she had never heard anything like it! She went on to remove the extensions and half of my naturals fell out in the process. So much for the long, luscious lashes promised with extensions!

I have contacted scoopon to complain about this horrible service but have yet to hear back from them after 2 months. Zoe, do you know of any boards to go to with complaints about beauty services? No one should have to go through this again!

I won’t use them now… even if I do miss that doll like feeling! Much easier to head over to MAC and get some 1/2 falsies attached for those special occasions.

And for every day, to get as close as I can to flutter worthy lashes, I can’t go past Iconic by Dior, then combed out, with a layer of Extase by Dior over the top. Works at treat! Best lash combs I’ve found at are by… Tweezerman I think, at David Jones.

Can anyone recommend a good “day” red. All mine seem a bit dark, or a bit much for day wear. I would like red without the “wow look at her red lipstick” look.

Revlon LIp Butter in Candy Apple is a good red for day, if you just use one light coat it is sheer but still noticable. Love it! :)

I’m trying to do the same! Have been a committed gloss girl for… well, ever, but have recently decided to give lipstick a whirl, even though it terrifies me.

The red I love (and do wear during the day), is dior rouge ara 999. I find it a little ott for the first few minutes, but then settle into it. Just is a lovely bit of pop when I’m otherwise feeling a bit blah.

      Best of luck!

If your a pale girl, the new Clinique Chubby Stick in Two-Ton Tomato is the easiest, happiest red! It’s very day wear, moisturizing & minimum maintenance required.
May not show up enough pigment if your complexion is darker.

Re your sensitive eyes… I reckon you should ask an Optometrist which brands they recommend. Worth a shot.

Chanel Coco Shine’s in Rebelle and Monte Carlo are my favourite easy to wear reds.

Thanks Zoe. Are they as high maintenance as Lash Extensions where you have to keep getting them filled every 3 weeks or so? Thank you
