zoe1 The 3 big nail polish trends for 2012.

Zoe

As I type this, my hands are without polish and have been chaotically clipped by a woman (“me”) who was extremely frustrated by their length, because she kept accidentally scratching her face, and just felt, well, dirty. Long nails make me feel dirty. Not sure why. To me it feels alien and unnecessary to have my nails long, and plus, I’m far too clumsy and childish to do them with elegance.

I have a friend who has long, oval nails, and they are absolutely magnificent. They suit her, because she is a careful, graceful woman, the type who knows which knife is for which course at sophisticated dinners, and how to tie and wear scarves in multiple ways. For her to have short nails wouldn’t be right. But for me, and my little kid hands, shorter nails are much better. I still ask for an oval shape though – it’s much more flattering on the hand, especially a stubby one such as mine, than a straight, blunt edge. (Mimic the moons at the base of your nail bed for the most flattering nail shape.)

This afternoon it all stops. I will set off to my local nail bar and enjoy an injection of high-gloss cherry red. I will probably chose OPI Big Apple Red because it is a wonderful, orange-based red that doesn’t make my hands look lifeless, like blue-red reds do. (I am warm toned.)

The elegantly buff nails at Derek Lam s/s 2012

I will do this this week because I always wear red lipstick or a red dress (or both! How outrageous!) and certainly red nails on Christmas day. It makes me feel festive and celebratory, and as it takes just as much effort to put on a Party Dress as it does shorts and a t-shirt, why not? We dress up for friends and work and restaurants and roller discos all year round – why not our family on this one day? They’re the ones giving us kitten calendars and novelty mugs to unwrap after all.

But back to nails, and more specifically, the Big Nail Trends for 2012. It’s fair to say that while nail polish is predominantly a mood/outfit/habit thing, there has been a tremendous increase in professional manicures and nail varnish trends in the past few years. And so, there’s no harm getting your head around which shades and textures will be in fashion and on nails, so that should you choose to experiment and try something exciting and new, (or you’re the type of thrilling broad who balances dangerously on the knife-edge of trends) you’re well equipped next time you’re told to “choose your colour please.”

1. MILKY WHITES, BUFF AND FLESHY-TONED NUDES.

nails 2 380x249 The 3 big nail polish trends for 2012.

Pretty, playful pink nails at Chanel s/s 2012

In terrific news for minimalists and those who prefer a low-key look on their nails, soft beiges, opaque sand tones, almond, milky whites and “greige” are still very much in. Even the French manicure is back! Imagine that! Cooler skin tones might like to choose more “white-based” shades while warm skin tones will look better in pink or cream based tones. Try Essie Waltz, OPI Samoan Sand, Chanel Inattendu, Revlon Grey Suede, Sally Hansen Beige Blast, Deborah Lippman Naked.

2. LADYLIKE, PRETTY NAILS

Soft pastels and dreamy pinks and frisky crimson and retro, rich reds: that’s going to be the biggest trend in my opinion, which I’m afraid is the only one I can offer. Chanel models at the s/s 2012 sashayed down the runway with a very pretty, rose pink, and if the past five years or so are anything to go by, whatever Chanel does in nail polish all of us do in nail polish. Keep your nails more oval-shape than a square or natural for added daintiness and prettiness and allure when you’re drinking Passiona or playing bowls. Try Orly Sweet Tart or Precisely Poppy, Creative Shellac in Gotcha, OPI in Meep Meep Meep (from the Muppets collection), Bourjois So Laque! In Rouge Casino, or hold out for Chanel May (pictured above) on sale Feb.

Ooh, lace nails! How theatrical.

3. EXCITING, ARTY, TRICKSTER NAILS

Nail art, textured topcoats and wild colours, deemed tacky and uncool and Jerry Springer-y for so many years, are enjoying 15 minutes of fame, and I for one welcome the fruitiness with open arms and bare nails. And so, for those who are feeling bold and playful, this is your moment! Try black and white mod-style designs, or get/draw some decals stuck onto your nails, (moustaches seem to be popular at the mo-ment, but I have mo idea why) (zzzzzing!) or stick on some sequins or glitter, or press and top-coat over some lace, or you paint on some patterns, or go for animal print stick-ons, or do metallic, chrome Minx nails, or a shatter finish, or use a sheer glitter polish (the type favoured by five-year-olds) over dark nails for drama and sparkle, or you can do reverse moons, or you can toy around with the traditional French mani and do clear or white nails with silver or gold or black tips, or you can do none of this and still be very happy with your nails, actually.

nails 1 The 3 big nail polish trends for 2012.

If atomically hip girls like Alexa Chung do nail art, I reckon we probably can too.

Try: Sally Hansen Salon Effect stick on decals, (colour block with them, why don’t you!) or Sally’s Nail Art pens, OPI Shatter, or just ask your nail bar to do something wild and intriguing with some little gemstones on the tips with a clear base, (like Alexa, pictured.)

There is also a strange and unsavoury move towards long, pointed, claw like nails (See: Rihanna; Knowles, Beyonce; Gaga, Lady) but I won’t write about that trend because I think it is both terrifying and deeply unsophisticated.

Happy Christmess, you gorgeous rascals!

Zo

Nice article! Totally agree with creating exciting manicures. I think greens, chevron manicures, glitter, magnetic nail polish will be big this year. I’ve compiled some trends and nail art ideas in my blog http://polisheddiaries.blogspot.com/

    Cheers! :)

Hi, I have had my nails done with Shellac – which I am loving as normal nail polish lasts about 2 days looking good on me. My fingernails grow really quickly and I despise them being long and I was just wondering if anyone knows if I can clip them with the Shellac on them or will it ruin them or cause them to peel off?

While doing my normal look at what’s in the nail polish section at the supermarket i found a Sally Hansen pack that includes a black, white and glittery silver with very fine brushes and 2 sheets of reusable stencils. The stencils were so easy to use. Just colour as normal and when the colour is dry use the stencil, which kind of sticks but not like tape or anything.

I love the Sally Hansen nail polish strips. They stay on much longer than normal nail polish. I’ve always had oval nails, cannot stand squared off nails. The only thing with the nail polish strips is that if you continuously wear them, they discolor your nails. I suppose nail polish does, but as a nurse I’ve never really been able to continuously wear nail polish. I’ve never had the acrylic/gel nails. I’ve heard some horror stories about what they do to your nails and thrush, ugh. Using shellac is an interesting idea. We used to have to paint it on my daughter’s ballet pointe shoes to strengthen the soles.

If you use a good base coat (Sally hansen is my fav too) it stops your nails discolouring, so I wonder if you tried using a base coat before sticking on the colour if this would stop the stick ons discolouring your nails????

Gah. I’m sorry – that came across as really really bitchy. Sorry about that, I just get frustrated when in one article I read how we’re all supposed to accept our bodies, and ‘why do we keep doing it to ourselves’ re brazilians, and then I read this…and I’m confused again.

I went to DJs last night to buy OPI Rainbow Connection, it wasn’t on the shelf, I asked the staff if they had any and they said they had a stash behind the counter…apparently, they had sold out 5 times and had a 50-person waiting list, and only a few leftovers from the last shipment…

I still bought it, because it’s so pretty, but I judge myself for being so unoriginal.

I love having my nails done (only beauty treatment I have – don’t even have my hair done) and I am addicted to Shellac at the moment. I have always had brittle nails and I’m so rough most polish (even OPI) chips within 24 hours but I get a week out of Shellac easy. For Christmas this year I am wearing a pink and white sun dress with purple toes and hot pink nails with silver glitter for added Christmas bling! I also always keep nails short so I don’t take an eye or something out, I’m such a klutz!

Oh dear – I was looking forward to having my nails a decent length for the Xmas break (been dying to try Opi Shatter) but sadly, washing my hands a gazillion times a day means they break off very very easily.

Am thinking I might just file the other ones down and paint them anyway!! Maybe just one colour though, v.short nails probably wouldn’t do the Shatter effect justice.

More than anything i wish I could stop biting my nails (ew I know!). I have done it since i was a toddler and I just cant stop. I love nail polish so much and always have a delish colour on my toes (coral/red at the moment) but can not stop biting my fingernails. Sometimes I get acrylic nails and always keep them short and bright but at the moment I cant grown my nails long enough to attach acrylic ones too (yes they are that bad!)

Have you tried those nail polishes that taste awful, designed to stop you biting?

Other options are to keep moisturiser in your bag and every time you bite, moisturise your hands instead (this stopped me pulling the skin off around my fingernails). Or put a rubber band on your wrist and snap it every time you bite.

Hmmmmm. I’m not one to follow trends, they usually don’t suit me. And if I’m going to do my nails, I’d like to make a “statement” with them. Any nude/neutral colours aren’t going to work (unless they’re silvery white) because they tend make me look unhealthy/sick/dead, for some reason.

As for Christmas Day, I’m planning on wearing a light-ish-but-not-too-pale yellow dress which has a black sash. So I was thinking of black nails with silver moons, Or a rich, royal purple to contrast with the yellow of my dress. Because it might not be sunny on Christmas Day, but it will probably be overcast, yet snow-free.

I’m very pale and end up wearing pale shades, I read once that pale shades on a pale person make you seem just that bit darker…. anyway, I am not one to stand out much, so pale is good. I have a shimmery pink on my toes right now – Revlon, I think. I don’t bother with my fingers much because I always seem to be doing something with my hands and I always mess them up before they dry.

I do love deep plum in winter though… just to be a little dramatic in the colder months.

I really love that Chanel polish! In the mean time I think i’ll stick with OPI red for Christmas or the MIMCO red polish and Pinking of You (OPI) over summer. I also like ‘Italian Love Affair’ (OPI). I don’t have the patience for nail art, unfortunately. I have never liked my nails to be long and I will go with the oval shape nail.

I recently tried gelac polish, which is similar to shellac and it was lovely for about five days but I think I prefer to just go with regular polish to keep my nails strong and healthy.

I love my nails long and red, but now I have a girlfriend it isn’t practical to wear them long (long nails + vagina = ouch unless you’re extremely careful). I also find that polish chips far too easily off my nails (I’m too lazy to touch up – waiting for them to dry is torture). So I’m afraid my nails will be short and boring this holiday season. I love the way nail polish style is at the moment and over the last few years. It seems to be more of a focus at the moment. I have a slight nail polish addiction and change colors every 2 weeks (unless it starts to chip earlier).

My fav trick I learned recently is putting the print from a news paper on the nail. It’s super easy and it look really cool. Just paint on the base coat and a beige or very light color (beige tones work best from what I have done but any light color would work). Then once the color is dry, dip one finger at a time in vodka (I’ve been told other alcohol may work, but I like vodka so I used that) and press the news paper on the nail. Peel the paper off after a few seconds and you should have the print on your nail. Smaller writing looks better than bigger print because you see more print rather than a few big letters

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
    • Melissa J

I have never heard of this! And then the print sticks to your nails? do you do a clear top coat over that? how long does it last? wouldn’t it rub off if you wash your hands?
      I’m confused but deeply intrigued.

      • Mel

I left the ink set for a while and then did a clear top coat as normal. Nope it didn’t wash off, it lasted as long as the color. It looks awesome and the vodka was an nice addition to my ‘me’ time doing my nails. I found new news paper works better than a paper that has been around for a while, so if you can use todays paper.

        Good luck with it.

This prompted me to trim all the nails on my hands and feet. Like you, Zoe, I keep my fingernails short. I have cats and dogs, I work with children, I bake, I type (I’m a writer), and I put my hands in dishwater. Long nails are inconvenient for me, and my nails usually break before they get much length anyway.

I’ve never had a boyfriend who likes long nails. I don’t bother polishing them either, because I am too lazy for the upkeep. I keep them short and clean and buff them sometimes.

I always have something on my toes, though. Usually a pop-art bright like fuchsia or primary red.

Otherwise there are some great polishes that you put on your nails that taste rancid!!! You’ll quickly stop biting your nails. Orly No Bite bitter clear polish is great and i remember Sally Hansen did a good one, but I’m not sure if they still have it.

My nails naturally split and chip away and this really made a difference. Also keep your nails short (file not cut!) until they improve. Try keep a nail file in your bag so that if one starts to splinter off you can file it and ‘save’ the nail instead of biting it off and ruining it.

I think its because it takes so long to do and I can only do my nails when my baby is asleep and need to make sure they have completely dried before she wakes and they get ruined.

I would love to do creative nails, but I don’t have the effort to do them :(

I’m away for xmas so i will probably just have a soft pink nail, or even just a clear coat. I hate taking polish in my luggage as I’m terrified of it leaking.

Currently I have a gorgeous orange/coral on that is now chipping :(

My favourite advice regarding nails (NSFW? The language is a little graphic, but it’s hilarious, Krista is an amazing blogger)

Long nails DO feel dirty! I’m all about short and bright. OPI Cajun Shrimp is my favourite at the moment. It’s like Big Apple Red but a little more orangey/pinky. Love it!

I hate long nails too! I don’t know how anyone who has them does anything. And those revolting acrylics… EW.

Hello from my phone at an awkward angle to achieve the best reception possible! I’ve been absent this week in far north Queensland where I must say, Zoe, it has not yet been so hot and humid I need a matte tinted moisturizer! Plus mums Internet is at dial up speed and mm will not load at all on dial up!

I’ve raided mums nail polish collection and have got the most fabulous orange shade from witchery on my nails today! Im hanging on to this brightly colored nail trend for as long as I can!!

Don’t really bother on my fingers. Kids and cooking make that most impractical. But still rocking black on my toes. Might be a bit 2010 but I still like it.

I’ve got a nice black maxi and some funky black and purple sandals to go with it – I was thinking of getting some black to match for my toes as well. My nieces would love to paint my toenails! I figured black would be easier to match than the purple.

I think I’m wearing the last application that my bottle of OPI’s Sweet Heart will give me because it’s turned into a gluggy mess… :(
For the last 2 years or so I have ALWAYS had nail polish on my fingers- I feel naked without it and hate the way it looks when it’s all chipped. When I moved a few months ago I did a rough count and I have over 150 bottles!!!

Thanks Zoe, I just bought some of the new Kardashian Kolors from the UK and I’ve been loving Over the Rainbow (OPI Muppets) and Revlon Gold Coin and Smoky Canvas and China Glaze Icicle.

I live in Sydney and I’ve been looking for a place that does minx nails (it’s like applying a sticker on your nail. You can have prints, patterns etc but I really want this shiny, metallic, foil look minx)

You can get DIY Sally Hansen foils. I picked mine up from priceline. :)

I rocked the zebra print! I loved it!

Question: I think I may be a freak but I don’t have half moons on the base of my nails. What shape should I go for then?

I have about 50 nail polishes. (Which I actually call nolish because that’s what I called it as a kid.) About half of them are OPI. Which I thought was HEAPS until I read about Evil Cupcake’s stash down below!

They are so friggin’ expensive here in NZ. So I buy them online :) My favourite nail polish right now….probably Sparrow Me the Drama :)

Oh dear I’m a biter!!! I hate it and they’re ugly as hell, but I’ve been doing it FOREVER! The only time I stop is when I’m pregnant for some weird reason? For the birth and first few months of each of my 3 babies I had lovely nails, but I’m not plannnig on having any more just for the benefit of my nails!
My toes on the other hand will get a lovely pedi and dark red polish sometime this week, when I can get away from the kids!
Ps after I read this story I guiltily ran straight to the bathroom to paint on some “stop that”! I can do this!

I was a nail biter for years too (still go back to it sometimes when I’m stressed though!). Have you tried filing your nails? Not just to get rid of the little bits that tend to encourage you to bite them, but just for something to do with your hands? Worked for me :)

I go through phases of nail biting and then stopping and enjoying nail polish…and then I relapse. Really need to kick the habit!

I adore nail polish so much – nothing like it to lift my mood. I don’t generally do ‘trends’ though, I’m all about how I’m feeling so bright reds and pinks are on high rotation. Don’t think I’ll ever do the crazy nail – only acceptable as a teenager IMO. I’m just about to paint mine red for that special christmassy feeling.

    Happy Christmas everyone!!!

I always do red for Christmas week. Last week I bought some of the OPI Muppets collection and am sporting glittery red nails… Wokka Wokka, topped with Getting Miss Piggy With It. The glitter is a bit big for my liking though.
