Q.I’m always so confused in the chemist, there’s so much to choose from. Which budget beauty brands do you recommend for basic face creams?
- Debbie
Oh, Debbie. Sweet Debbie. There’s not a man, woman or echidna out there who hasn’t been in the same bamboozled position, cruising the aisles with an empty shopping basket and full wallet (well, the coin purse at least) and no idea where to start.
Here are some pointers on your essential day and night gear.
1. NIGHT/ANTI-AGEING.
It’s hard to go past Olay for excellent quality skin care with legitimate clinical (and personal, anecdotal evidence) results. They are one of the few supermarket brands that incorporate ceramides and peptides, brightening and AHAs into their products, all of which are vital for those wanting to retain their youthful glow, or locate it again when it racks off.L’Oreal Paris, being part of the mammoth L’Oreal family (including Lancôme) has access to some impressive technology, and you’ll find probably the best of that in their new Youth Code range, which features skin probiotics (the hot new thing in skin care) as well as ceramides and peptides, ingredients to definitely keep an eye out for once your skin starts to lose its elasticity and bounce.
For the sensitive-skinned and/or purists, I very much recommend MooGoo (the cheapest), Sanctum or Dr Hauschka (bit pricier but very lovely indeed.)
Stand out prodz: Olay Regenerist Night resurfacing Elixir for strong-ish, glycolic, chemical exfoliation, Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting cream as a Do It All anti-ageing potion, Olay Total Effects anti-ageing serum, Youth Code Luminosity Serum for brightening, MooGoo Anti-Ageing Cream with Resveratrol, Sanctum Hy C Intensive Repair cream.
2. DAY CREAM
As you know Deb, I’m vigilant and extremely (some say “excessively”) vocal about protecting skin from UVA and UVB rays, each and every day. Best thing you can do for your skin. Especially if you use AHAs and such things on your skin at night. And don’t be fooled into thinking your makeup with SPF is enough – it’s not. The small amount of sun protection in makeup will always be compromised due to the need for a pleasant texture and coverage needs. Plus, the tiny amount you use takes that SPF 15 down to about an SPF 2.
So, I won’t be recommending any daily face creams that don’t feature good quality sun protection. Happily, some of the best and most advanced sun protection you can find (for both your daily use/as a moisturiser and prolonged sun exposure) live in the supermarket, and gone are the days when sunscreen was a horrible, congestive thing to schlozzle all over your face each day. Now they are quite lightweight and matte and delightful indeed, and some are tinted, meaning you’ve covered off protection, moisture and base all in one.
I highly recommend Neutrogena because of their Helioplex (the combination of Avobenzone and Oxybenzone together to block the complete spectrum of UVA and UVB rays), which is widely regarded as the best defence against UV protection on the market, because it is particularly powerful against UVA (the ageing rays), and is extremely stable (won’t break down in the sun.) I also like Sunsense by Ego, for their range of sensitive, matte, tinted daily moisturiser with sun protection, and I like Invisible Zinc because it’s a terrific physical sunscreen chockers with, uh, zinc.
Stand out prodz: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer (excellent for oily skin); Neutrogena Healthy Defence for daily use under makeup, Sunsense Daily Face SPF 30+; L’Oreal Paris’ UV Perfect Lightly Tinted SPF 30+ lotion; Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear, and Nivea’s Light Feel Daily Veil, which will be most pleasing to those who hate the ‘sunscreen’ feel and greasy look.
Deb, I’m sure the dames below will also have some excellent, personally-vouched for recommendations for you, so for the love of lecithin, read on!

Olay Regenerist Night resurfacing Elixir for strong-ish, glycolic, chemical exfoliation

hi Zoe
Just letting you know: “Neutrogena Healthy Defence” for daily use under makeup, has been discontinued!
Im shattered as i LOVE IT
loading...
One word: eBay!
loading...
I use Cetaphil Cleanser – its cheap, I can buy a large bottle and it lasts for ages!
I also make sure I use a scrub once a week for a deeper cleanse! I buy the Neutrogena one.
Some cheaper products I love are by Paula’s choice – her serums and moisturisers are great!!
I find her newsletters are awesome and she runs beautypedia.com
http://www.beautypedia.com/
a great source of product knowledge and tells you what brands are good and not so good! – She tells it like it is!
loading...
Years ago I found a product called Olay Complete Everyday Sunshine. It’s a face moisturizer/fake tan with SPF15 and it’s just fantastic. Cheap, effective and easy. Only trouble is I can’t find it anymore!
loading...
Free there are a few of them on eBay. About $20 from the UK.
loading...
Thanks!
loading...
I’m a huge fan of Aldi’s Lacura Fine Balance Foaming Face Wash – I love a cleanser that I can leave in the shower that takes off all my makeup including eye makeup and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. The best part is that it is only $3.99!!!! I’ve tried dozens of expensive brands over the years but have no intention of buying anything else
loading...
i bought their facial scrub last month and it works a treat!
loading...
Was just in my local Coles getting some groceries and Checked out the creams as per this article. As I need a new day cream…
Major bonus – loreal uv Paris perfect tinted day cream 30+ is on special at Coles today . Hooray !! Reduced from 19.99 to $3.98!!! While stocks last !! thanks Zoe . I got 5 !! Run ladies run
loading...
I think they have bee reduced because Coles will no longer be selling it so grab it chea while you can!
loading...
I have tried many face creams over the years, from Clinique to Neutrogena. But the one I stick to now which has made my skin feel and look lush is the little Olay. From the supermarket. Between that and the rose hip oil I use at night, my skin loves me.
loading...
Olay touch of foundation. Best ever!
loading...
I really like the qv moisturising day cream. It is light, excellent for sensitive skin, has SPF 30 in it and is cheap!
loading...
Sorry qv face moisturising day cream.
loading...
Me too! It is light an non greasy, I’ve found a lot of the brands mentioned including Olay, neutrogena leave me shiny. For a good everyday body moisturiser / sunscreen i also recommend Vaseline aloe fresh with SPF 15, doesn’t stain your clothes, is fantastic value and smells lovely with a lightweight feel.
loading...
Also autralis has a good primer, cheap and doesn’t test on animals
loading...
yes i use that primer, why pay $60-$80 on other brands when this works just fine!!!
loading...
I have used them all! I cant even imagine the amount of money i have wasted on trying everything from suoermarket brands to specialty brands. The only products that work for me are Jurlique. I wish it was cheaper though. I am yet to find a sunscreen that doesn’t make me breakout! I have very oily to dry skin which is hard to manage! I will re-read these posts in hope of finding a cheaper solution : )
loading...
I also have dehydrated oily skin and the brand I have found for this combo is Korres.
loading...
Korres is fantastic! I have their skin and make-up products. In particular, the ginger and vitamins foundation is light yet has great coverage. MALIN+GOETZ is also worth checking out – I love their moisturiser. Though they aren’t really inexpensive. Moderately priced is more like it.
loading...
Paula’s Choice is also really good for combination skin and they have great sunscreens too.
loading...
Have been stealing mum’s Olay sensitive since I ran out of QV and I’m loving it. Discovered tonight that my sister has been doing the exact same thing! Looks like I’m going to have to get my own to avoid being caught out
loading...
Try Jane iradale mineral make up, the pressed powder version. It has a sunscreen in it. It is the only sunscreen I can use that doesn’t destroy my skin. It is about $90 though.
loading...
Give your mum the new one & take the used one for yourself. Your poor mum!!
loading...
I’m a huge fan Zoe and must say that I’m loving the ‘real life’ photos of late as opposed to the air brushed, photo shopped rubbish! Your ‘real life’ beauty is much more convincing
loading...
Hey Emma,
I can vouch for one photos she uses in the profile shot which is not photo shopped as my boss photographed her and I processed the photo myself. So no need to assume all studio-lit photos are photoshopped.
I do agree with you that the ‘real life photos are also nice to mix things up though.

Love this post!
loading...
So I went on hols and forgot my face SPF (i always used nutrogena) so I had to do a dash to the supy to get some. Only one I found was an aldi. So I got a pump thing of theirs and wow. It was so good! I now only use the aldi one now. I have acne prone skin, so ad I had to use roaccutane and I have never had a breakout using this product.
I use garnier light BB type cream on top so im all dewy and good to go.
Turned into a pretty cheap regime for me!
loading...
Oh and as for cleanser, i use the golden oldy, ponds cold cream. My mum used it, my nanny used it so im gonna use it. feels so nice!
loading...
I have looked for ponds cold cream for ages and can’t find any. Where did you find it hiding?
loading...
I used to have to have it sent over from the UK but I found massive tubs at Chemist warehouse once so I stocked up.
I am almost out now so I will have to see if it is still there, otherwise back to getting UK rellies to get it for me
loading...
Thanks mummak
loading...
I buy mine from Woolworths. It’s usually hidden down on the bottom shelf though and you have to really search hard for it
loading...
Have to agree with the Aldi products, Lacura brand. Fantastic skin care products cannot go wrong, my girlfriends all different ages and skin types we are all addicted to quality and price. Made in Germany. Really is worth a try.
loading...
Sooooo the CLARASONIC…….. What does everyone think? I read the reviews and the majority were fabulous but this just hasnt helped me at all, if anything im breaking out more then ever! and yes i know about about the “purging period” but its been over 3 months now and my face is breakout central especially just before i get my periods. it was so expensive too!
loading...
What are you using it with? Your normal cleanser may be too harsh when paired with the clarisonic. I had to switch to a gentler one with mine.
loading...
I was frustrated with the same thing after 6 months, but i found that i was using it wrong. I did some research and saw that its intended to be used with a light skimming action over the skin, rather than trying to scrub your face with it like i was.
I also changed my cleanser (I went to a glycolic acid one instead of my plain over the counter one), and in the last month my skin has really improved.
Hopefully you find an answer to your dilemma
loading...
When I first got my Clarisonic I was using a Neutrogena cleanser, which I found was too harsh for my skin. So I switched to Cetaphil and haven’t looked back. I have oily/combination skin and honestly, my skin has never been this good.
loading...
Katie it took me 3 months to stop breaking out – used morning and night – now after 10 months use my skin is in best ever shape. My tips – use lots of cetaphil, gently skim in (very) slow motion (let the clarasonic ‘jiggle’ rather than scrubbing manually). Less is more, you don’t want to overstimulate your oil glands.
When I was breaking out I made sure to soak the brushhead regularly in milton sterilizing solution (the stuff you sterilize baby’s bottles) – you want to make sure the brush isn’t harbouring bacteria.
loading...
FYI – Neutrogena have stopped making the healthy defence cream! I love it but when I went to priceline the other day to get some more the assistant said it has gone out of production.
I did manage to buy the last two tubes on the shelf however.
)
loading...
Nooo what are they doing? That stuff Is the best
loading...
I see Zoe still doesn’t give a shite about animal testing and cruelty. As far as I’m aware, she’s never replied to a comment asking her questions about this. So I can only assume that to her, beauty is more important that animal welfare. Nice.
loading...
Then why don’t you suggest some?
loading...
Maybe if everytime it was brought up, it wasn’t so accusatory and rude, she might feel comfortable in replying.
loading...
I agree.
Probably too scared of offending advertisers. Revenue counts more than the rights of animals not to be tortured.
Nothing is an ugly as animal cruelty.
loading...
I have hyper sensitive skin but can use Clinque City Block sunscreen ($36 last time I bought some) or Hamilton Everyday Face Sunscreen ($15ish) with no problems. Both are tinted and with a thin layer of mineral powder over the top, double as foundation.
loading...
Me too! I love the Clinique City Block 25 (and I have really oily problem skin). The best sunscreen I’ve ever used.
loading...
I’ve been using the 40+ version that I have to source from OS. But i’ve been using it for 10+ years (damn I sound old) and I have no intention of changing!!
loading...
I feel like I’m 19 and reading Cleo when I read ‘prodz’. Surely we can grow up and call them products by now.
loading...
I feel all young and cool when I use zoe’s lingo. Don’t I?
loading...
Mia, how do u feel about promoting animal cruelty free products? I would be really interested in reading an article dedicated to this. I remember we all seemed to care about it in the 90s in women’s mags but seems to have fallen by the wayside?
loading...
Makeup and beauty prodz are meant to be fun :p
loading...
I feel like I’m 19 when I read “prodz” … and I’m 38. Please, Zoe, keep it up
loading...
Wendy…just relax love! Do we really need language police all the bloody time??!! Seriously, so tired of reading posts where people just can’t help themselves and inject a bit of nastiness. Zoe uses a certain tone and register that is fun and funny for a particular purpose, that is, to make us enjoy her writing and not take ourselves too seriously…exactly what most people need on a Friday night after a long week. How about just making relevant comments rather than deconstructing her form. And no, not a personal friend of Zoe’s, just a fan who enjoys her writing, humour, prodz and all. Have a nice weekend everyone
loading...
I have combination, acne prone, somewhat sensitive skin. In winter months I like Biore Nourish Moisture Lotion SPF15. In summer I amp my sunscreen to something a bit more protective. I get oily and for the past five summers or so I’ve been using Japanese sunscreen. I love SunPlay UV Moisture Milk! Doesn’t feel like sunscreen at all yet it’s rated SPF50 and PA+++ in Japan. Excellent. And reasonably priced on eBay or Sasa.com.
At night time I have a cheap and cheerful favourite – Nivea Sensitive Soothing Day Cream. Yes I like this at night. No SPF in it
loading...
I also second Zoe’s recommendation with the Olay Microsculpting moisturiser. I have repurchased this about 10 times. I am regularly reviewing new products and this is one that I have no hesitation in recommending when friends ask what should they use.
Another brand that I have recently discovered is U Little Beauty. I recently reviewed it on my blog
http://seducedbybeauty.com/2012/07/28/u-little-beauty-vitamin-c-serumnourishing-body-lotion-2/
I love that it is Australian and contains no ‘nasties’.
loading...
Thanks for suggesting this, I am also into natural products and buying Australian
loading...
I’ve recently started using Olay Complete Defence SPF 30+ daily moisturiser (thanks Zoe!) as I have incredibly fair skin and I am a total sun bunny. I love the sun but it doesn’t feel the same, unfortunately! It’s not greasy or oily at all, and makes my skin feel as soft as anything. You can get it at Target right now for $10 (and I think it comes with a face wash of some description – I saw it whilst waiting in the checkout line today). I buy mine at Priceline and it’s approximately $13 or there abouts. It’s small, light, travel-friendly and best of all, cheap. What’s not to love?! I’m a uni student so any time I can snap up a bargain, it’s happy days.
At night I use Eucerin Calming Cream (http://www.eucerinus.com/products/calm/eucerin-skin-calming-daily-moisturizing-creme.html), which unfortunately I don’t think is available out here. I have a feeling that perhaps Walmart do international shipping, other wise you could try other American pharmacies (such as CVS) and see if they will ship out here. I picked it up on a whim when I was in NYC – my moisturiser ran out and I was desperate for something, so off to CVS I went and have used it ever since. I either stock up when I go there or get my American mates to send me some! One of the large bottles will last you a really long time, so it’s worth it.
On a non-face related note, one skin care prod that is cheap as chips which I use every night (NOT on my face though) is baby oil. Seriously. Get on it. Your skin will feel as soft as a baby – for real. It is fantastic.
AND, don’t forget your Rose Hip oil!!
I picked up the Sukin one at Priceline today for $14. Again, cheap and lovely.
loading...
How do you use the baby oil? Do you apply it to wet skin out of the shower?
loading...
I basically just apply it like you would a moisturiser, so after I’ve had a shower and dried off I slap some on! It doesn’t feel oily or slimy or anything, it soaks right in. It’s especially nice in winter when you’re having extra hot showers and maybe in need of a little hydration afterwards. I noticed the difference within a week – you turn into that person who tells everyone you know to feel your skin, hahaha.
loading...
yep you are so right about Baby oil. I am using a palmers brand body oil atm, but baby oil is awesome too. So great in winter and as you say, soaks right in!
loading...
Oooh Eucerin best ever! I bought some via Amazon. They have the whole range and will ship to Australia.
loading...
I know the article is about face products but for those of you that are looking for cheaper body care I think Sukin is a great brand. The body wash and lotion smell and feel exactly like the Aesop geranium leaf range but cost way way less. It also uses natural and organic ingredients. You can get it from priceline and pharmacies.
loading...
Agreed – I adore Sukin, haven’t used anything else in years!
loading...
And they are Australian owned! Love Sukin too!
loading...
agree – love Sukin
Their hand and body wash are lovely!
loading...
Another Sukin fan here! Love their cream cleanser, rosehip oil and night cream. So cheap but such fantastic products!
loading...
I have sensitive acne prone skin – primarily due to small scale PCOS. Best moisturiser for me is Neutrogena for sensitive skin and the best cleanser is the foaming Neutrogena one you can use in the shower. I have from time to time “upgraded” and tried Clnqiue and Lancome because I “think” that because I am in my 30′s with two children, I need to use more “premium” products but my skin always breaks out so I’m always going back to Neutrogena. I hope there’s nothing wrong with using these products on more mature skin!! I use Clinique eye cream though … so far so good.
loading...
Olay total effects! I used to use Clarins day cream and switched when I went on maternity leave to save money. My skin actually improved! When my Clarins night cream runs out I shall be racing to the, ahem, supermarket to buy the Olay regenerist elixir. I used to be such a Clarins junkie, I still use a few Estee Lauder products but am now open to trying cheaper brands, something old me would have found hard to swallow! Other cheap awesome products that I love are Neutrogena hand cream and Dove soap!
loading...
Thanks for a great article Zoe. In response to your zealous attitude to SPF protection for your face, I wonder if you might re-think it just a little for the winter months. Many women in places like Melbourne suffer from vitamin D deficiency, and feel reluctant to use a strong SPF protection in winter.
loading...
Thanks for bringing this up Jane… I’m extremely fair-skinned and used to be vigilant with SPF in all seasons until my naturopath discovered that I had extremely low Vit D levels… It’s very important to be sun smart, but also remember that a small bit of sun does have its place for our health too.
loading...
Yes, I was going to ask Zoe about this. I have always used SPF on my face, though not alway on my arms. And now the doctor has just put me on a massive vitamin D supplement….
loading...
I love and adore the Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunscreen.
loading...
Love a decent Nivea tinted lip balm. Cheap, easy, tastes like red lollies!
loading...
I can vouch for the Moo goo range of producs, its kind of nice to know I’m not coating my skin in chemicals. I’ve been using for about 6months and love it. But as I wanted a tinted moisturiser for days the Aveeno positively radiant is my pick. Looks really natural.
loading...
I would like to point out though that many natural ingredients can be highly irritating to the skin. Just because something is a made from so called chemicals (keeping in mind that everything is actually made of chemicals), doesn’t automatically make it bad.
loading...
Sorry I didn’t mean to say they were as a general statement, you are of course correct but you have to admit there are a lot of things out there that people thought were safe (solariums for example) that have turned out not to be. Is all I’m sayin!
loading...
Moo Goo gets my vote as well. I have extremely sensitive skin and I can’t cope with scent – whether it’s natural or chemical.
I’ve used the Moo Goo moisturiser that Zoe mentions and it’s great, but right now, I’m just using the ‘Soothing MSM Cream’ and my face loves it.
loading...
Ok so if I use a chemical exfoliant at night, should I still use my rose hip oil? Will the AHA’s be fecking with the goodness of teh rose hips? CONFUS–ED! So many ruuuules
loading...
The chemical exfoliant will get rid of some dead skin cells. The rosehip oil will then be absorbed more easily.
loading...
Yessss! If I could I would gobble up budget beauty articles for breakfast every day.
For a budget cleanser you can’t go past Cetaphil. One of the few cleansers I’ve repurchased! In regards to tinted moisturisers, personally I found the IZ one to be a little too sheer/ too shiny/ too sticky, but I quite like the Body Shop Vitamin E one or Australis Paparazzi Perfect. The only downside is neither are SPF 30 so I usually use a sunscreen underneath!
loading...
Yes – Cetaphil is awesome!
loading...
Agree – another cheap winner!
loading...
Interesting fact: (I think I read it in Amazing Face) Cetaphil sometimes masquerades as sperm in adult films.
I never looked at my bottle the same way again.
loading...
So true! And so funny
loading...
Totally agree, Cetaphil soap is amaze.
loading...
and detergent free so doesn’t dry you out!
loading...
Sadly it does contain the same ingredient some detergents do – sodium lauryl sulfate – which can be irritating for a lot of people!
I highly recommend the MooGoo milk wash though – can be used on face and body (which normally I would never do – but this actually does work for me!) – and is just as gentle (maybe gentler thanks to the lack of SLS!) as Cetaphil.
loading...
Ooh I completely agree, I actually found that I was allergic to Cetephil, and now am MooGoo all the way. Also after reading Missy comment above, I think I would burst out laughing every time I went to use it! Too funny.
loading...
Olay Cream Cleanser is also the bomb for those with ‘normal’ skin. 12 bucks.
It has tiny beads which exfoliate ever so slIghtly. It cleanses well but doesn’t dry my skin out.
Cleanser is one product that you should not spend too much dough on. There are approximately a bajillion options out there and there is no difference between a cheap and an expensive option. There is also no need to buy one with ‘active ingredients’ – they get washed down the drain!
I spend my money on the stuff that stays on my face, like a mild AHA toner, serum and sun cream (all by Environ) and night cream (Paula’s Choice). Environ seems more expensive to buy but it lasts for aaaaaages so I think it all balances out.
loading...
Garnier BB cream.
About 10 bucks from Coles.
loading...
Yep. LOVING THIS PRODUCT! It’s the perfect everyday base for me – evens skin tone with a dewy finish. Can’t believe it’s so cheap.
loading...
I love it too! I feel it gives me enough coverage for work, without looking like I’ve caked foundation on. Although I do put a little bit of powder over the top as with my 15+ moisturiser underneath I need it to be a bit more matte.
loading...
Wish I could love this, but my skin reacts so badly to it and it breaks me out horribly!
loading...
I’ve been using this too, but sadly it gets a : ( on beautypedia ???
loading...
Do I need to put a moisturiser on at night after the Youth Code Luminosity Serum or should the serum be enough for my mid-20′s skin?
loading...
It’s completely up to you – a serum can be used in 3 ways – ie by itself, layered under a moisturiser, or as an occasional treatment product. If your skin feels ok with just the serum (which is quite likely being that you’re young, and if your skin is on the oily side of things) then there’s no need to layer a moisturiser on top of it
loading...
My favourite cheap beauty product is Dove Tinted Moisturiser. The Invisible Zinc one is also excellent if you feel like splurging a bit more (I only use it during the summer because it feels quite heavy too).
In terms of body lotion – I can’t go past Palmer’s coco butter. I have it stockpiled in my room in case I ever run out.
loading...
Palmer’s is great! Their day cream is light and gets nicely absorbed. Excellent value for money.
loading...
Agreed! I love trying new body lotions, but Palmers is always one I consistently come back to! Also St Ives do some great body lotions too – particularly for sensitive skin.
loading...
I agree – Invisible Zinc tinted moisturizer is fab. I have drier skin so the fact that it’s a bit heavier suits me fine. I’m 41 with quite sun damaged skin (thanks to growing up in coastal Oz in the 70′s) and the coverage is fine for the weekends for me. I mix it with a foundation for work.
loading...
I love Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer sunscreen. It’s the only one I’ve tried (and I’ve tried dozens) that doesn’t make me feel like a greaseball.
http://labeauteetleblogueur.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
Olay’s Complete Defence daily UVA/UVB moisturising lotion has an SPF 30+ and the sensitive one (there’s two) is so light you can slather it on. It’s zinc based, and available in most supermarkets for less than $15.
It’s also one of the few sunscreens that doesn’t break out this acne prone face of mine! I can’t recommend it enough.
loading...
HI can you put a web link so we know which to choose
loading...
http://store.olay.com.au/olay-complete-defence-daily-uv-moisturising-lotion-spf-30-75ml/
The sensitive one has ‘sensitive’ written in green under the 30+ symbol but i couldn’t find a picture of the box. I haven’t tried the regular one.
loading...
Love the theme of this article!
Does anyone have any recommendations of budget brands for everyday foundation category?
loading...
Lot’s of people like Bourjois Healthy Mix. Maybelline Fit Me isn’t too bad if you want a sheer foundation and the liquid Revlon Colorstay is a really good full coverage foundation.
http://labeauteetleblogueur.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
I like Revlon
loading...
A little off topic, but I’m sure you’ll all appreciate …
FYI Ladies – Latest Target catalogue has MAC in it – Yes MAC at TARGET! And its about half the price!
loading...
I am gagging for a MAC palette. BUY ALL THE MAC!
loading...
Watch out for the MAC at Target. I had a look yesterday and I’d say at least some of it is fake. The lippies don’t have the usual vanilla scent, the blush has a weird scent genuine MAC blushes don’t have and the a lot of the packaging has flaws like scratches and dents. Plus all the colours Target has are the same ones you see at markets, dodgy warehouse sales and so on. At best it’s grey market stuff a proper MAC counter would never sell.
http://labeauteetleblogueur.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
I second what Kate said. MAC only sell their products through MAC stores…I would never buy it from anywhere else, it’s one of the most counterfeited makeup brands around.
loading...
Really? Target is part of one of the biggest retail groups in Australia along with Coles etc. They have 100s of stores… I find it difficult to believe that they would be selling grey market or fake anything let alone advertising it in their catalogue. Let’s not forget MAC is a supermarket brand in the US that costs a fraction of the inflated Oz cost – maybe its just the bottom end of their range?
loading...
Target has admitted it’s not the same product MAC counters sell. Different manufacturers and so on, so it is grey market (which when it comes to MAC can mean totally fake). MAC has confirmed Target are not an authorised seller of MAC products.
One interesting thing others have noticed is that nowhere in the catalogue or on the displays are Target displaying the MAC logo.
http://labeauteetleblogueur.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
Wow. That’s crazy. I’m amazed such a massive retailer can get away with that!
loading...
I was a bit sceptical too, it does claim to be genuine tho.
loading...
Notice how much effort they’ve put into making sure the MAC logo isn’t visible in that picture. They’re working very hard to get around some legal issues with that.
http://labeauteetleblogueur.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
Yep – First thing I noticed and thought was very strange. Oh well.
I wonder if thats the same for NP at Target I’ve always thought its a little suss target sells it and its different packaging to the NP counters (i think).
loading...
Target (and Big W I think) sells NP Set, Napoleon Perdis’s cheaper range. They are authorised to sell that.
http://labeauteetleblogueur.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
MAC isn’t a supermarket brand in the US, it may be cheaper but it is still exclusively stocked only at MAC stores/counters.
loading...
loading...
Walmart had MAC counters within some of their stores. It wasn’t like Target putting up a small display of a bunch of random products.
loading...
Yep Emma you’re right MAC is not sold at supermarkets here, only at MAC stores even though it is much cheaper than back home, around half price essentially!

I know, I was there last year and stocked up big time, can’t believe the price difference! It’s crazy… and @Sydcat I hope you didn’t take my comment as rude because I didn’t mean it that way at all. I just wouldn’t want anyone to fork out their hard earned cash for a less than perfect product.

Wouldn’t target selling fake MAC brand be a massive legal issue?
I don’t think it would be fake for that reason.. they’d be in big doo doo if they got caught selling counterfeit products.

Where’s the statements from MAC and Target regarding this? I haven’t seen anything myself. All I can say is there’s no way Target would risk their reputation and business by selling counterfeit stock. They more than likely purchased this stock internationally – possibly it’s leftovers from old collections etc (which could explain why things are smelling quite right) – therefore MAC Australia won’t be talking it up – as they won’t receive any profit from these sales. Long gone are the days where only MAC counters sell MAC products – there’s several online stores selling the same kind of stock that Target have (and I’m not talking the red fruit one that has been busted for fakes before) – brands use these channels these days to sell off excess stock leftover from promotions, limited edition ranges, etc.
Re the catalogue avoiding the brand name – there’s probably advertising restrictions in place that stop them from displaying it.

It isn’t stock from old, unpopular collections. Target has products like Russian Red lipstick, Carbon eyeshadow.
There are places you can buy 100% genuine MAC products at reduced prices, but MAC recognises those places eg. the Estee Lauder Staff Warehouse. Stores like Strawberrynet, Ozsale and so on are not authorised sellers, and often have a mix of genuine and fake products. Ebay MAC is often fake, but there are some genuine sellers who are selling products bought from MAC counters.
You can email MAC if you need verification that they are not an authorised seller. Target are ignoring a lot of emails about this, so give them a call. The woman I spoke to was very vague about the products authenticity. When pressed she finally claimed it was genuine MAC,but she admitted it may not come up to the standards of MAC you would purchase from a counter, and even told me some of the colours may be different. That doesn’t sound authentic to me.

I actually said old collections OR excess stock. I fully expect MAC not to release a statement supporting these sales – like I said, Target most likely bought this stock from overseas, so MAC Australia won’t make any money – and of course they want people to only buy from where they approve – not only from a profit point of view, but also from a legal stance as it sounds like a lot of this stuff may be out of date so they don’t want to be liable for it.
This is happening a lot these days, where retailers are purchasing direct from overseas and bypassing Australian suppliers, which is at the detriment of Australia head offices, but benefiting the consumer I suppose.
*For the record I don’t work for Target or MAC, I just work in the industry so I see this kind of thing a lot.

Target put out a statement on Facebook about this just now…
loading...
For anyone who’s interested, that statement says, as you would expect:
Hi everyone. We’ve paid close attention to the feedback about Target’s MAC range on Facebook, Twitter and from bloggers. The MAC product Target sells is genuine and is sourced from a Melbourne-based supplier. Our supplier has imported this product on our behalf. Wholesalers in different countries can have different packaging which may explain why our MAC products look different to others you may have seen. We hope this clears up any confusion and encourage you to give us a call on 1800 814 788 if you’d like to discuss further. Thank you.

So am I not getting the real deal when I buy off strawberry net?
loading...
Im not 100% sure but the dermologica I bought off strawberrynet did not moisturize my skin the way the real products I’ve bought from a dermologica counter have. It was quite a noticeable difference. I haven’t bought from them since.

I absolutely love Nivea Light Feel Daily Face Veil, and their moisturizing body sunscreen. They’re not sticky and they’re cheap as chips! The Cancer Council used to make a fabulous body lotion with SPF 30+ but I think they’ve now changed the formula – its just not the same anymore.

I use the Nivea face veil too! Feels just like a moisturiser, not greasy at all. Although in winter I find it TOO light – I have to add a couple of drops of rosehip oil to compensate for my extra dry skin! Fantastic value though.

I love the QV ego brand for their day cream moisturiser. No bells and whistles, it’s SPF 30 and feels great on my skin, not how sunscreen usually feels!
Cheap too!

Agreed!

I was in hospital for 3 days, it was sudden so I had zero of anything with me.
The nurse gave me a toothbrush, comb, toothpaste and a specimen jar with some QV moisturiser in it. I had this really dry patch on one of my knuckles and within two days it was gone. I love QV!

What a darling! Nurses are so undervalued. Hope you recovered well.

QV is the bomb. I use the SPF 30 moisturiser every day – it’s excellent and the tube lasts for ages. The whole range is fantastic and what I like about it is it’s pretty much fragrance free so it doesn’t clash with your perfume.

I should also add that if you’re near a Chemist Warehouse, stock up on the big bottles of body wash and moisturiser there – it usually comes in 1L bottles, but Chemist Warehouse has the 1.25L bottles exclusively, and usually around the $17 mark. What’s not to love!

My dematologist also recommends QV as best face cream out there and not to waste pennies on anything else. I have been using it for a few years and it’s great. There other products also great for babies with sensitive skin eg QV bath oil
