I actually feel like seeing these photos of women without makeup has the total opposite affect to that intended. It just ups the stakes. They are flawless without makeup. In comparison, I am a hideous mess with bucket loads of the stuff. Wow, wasn’t that empowering!?

Honestly, I don’t understand why most women feel they need to wear makeup when most of us look fine – even better – without it.

These women look lovely. Personally, I think the made-up look is fake, and natural is more beautiful.

Realistically, most women aren’t absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous without a dash of makeup- (cases in point above- not bad looking without it, but just not as beautiful as with)… If you’re a mum, unless youre one of those freaks who’s kid has been sleeping thru since they were a week old (and no, I dont want to hear that), then quite frankly, hand me the undereye concealer. After a recent snidey remark from a so called girlfriend “you dont have to weat THAT much makeup” I was especially self loathing. And then I thought, you know what, I look better with a bit of face magic, if you think lipstick, mascara and a bit of blush is too much, then you’re on planet denial. And anyway, you cant improve ugly; at least Ive got something to work with, my dear friend!

The do look good dont they (envious much?) but I have to say the black and white does help with this… I’d like to see them in colour… but even still, I bet they look good!

Pretty much everyone looks better with less or even no makeup. Not just super models.

That’s not to say grooming is not important – it is. Its just that most women (and some men) pluck and tweeze and redraw far too much. Natural is best.

The photo’s are nice … but they don’t look THAT good … these are women with access to the best beauty treatments (invasive and non invasive) in the world … they have worked in an industry that requires them to look good for over 20 years … quite frankly I would expect some of them to look better.

Good bone structure is usually said about high cheek bones. But I guess it could mean if you have a large forehead then you have have complimentary small features….I looked at these models and only the last one on left has the classic cheek bone thing. Claudia is sorely lacking in any bones structure, hence using her mouth shape to give her some. Also a feminine jawline (not too square/large) may also denote good bone structure. I used to lament that my cheek bones were not visible enough, it seemed important in my family as my mother and grandmother both had this trait and I knew it meant a good beauty! Couldn’t give a toss now!!!

I think the photo’s are beautiful, as are the subjects, and this is a great thing for a very high end fashion magazine and the models to do. Truthfully, the fact they are in black and white I never thought was a drawback at all.

I once looked after Helena at a charity fashion parade – I was her ‘helper’ for the evening. I saw her wandering around in her tights and nothing else backstage. EVERY boy I knew wanted to hear the story over and over and over again. She was as amazing in real life as anyone I have ever seen.

Plus she was the nicest person I could have imagined. Very focussed but so sweet to me (who had absolutely no idea what they were doing and at one point got us both lost backstage trying to find her dressing room). She seems to be one of those women that both men and women agree on!

What exactly is “good bone structure”?
I hear that alot..but im not quite sure what it actually is lol

I think these women all look beautiful. As people have said, bone structure counts for a lot. I am in my 30s but I am always mistaken for my early twenties because of my bone structure and clear skin. So black and white photos or colour photos, they are supermodels for a reason.

Yes they are shot in exceptionally flattering circumstances, but these ladies have amazing bone structure (and probably access to some very helpful lotions and potions) – As a makeup artist I agree Mungo, a face is like a canvas. And even taking into account the ‘help’ they’ve had, the shots are beautiful.

Oh come on! These pictures are taken by a professional photographer, with the right lighting, the hair is done properly and of course they are in black and white!! Yes, I am jealous.. I can’t tell a lie.. but it’s good to have some perspective I think :-)

Yes, they are all photoshopped, but you can’t polish a piece of rusted metal. Photoshop can only do so much. Trust me, you don’t want your artists working on the one shoot for too long these days. That’s why you hire the best looking models possible. Magazine budgets have been butchered; there simply aren’t the resources to photoshop someone for hours and hours. A shooter sure ain’t going to have his team work on that for too long these days either.

On a side note: I met Helena @ Palm beach in 1996 and I have to say that I have never seen such an amazing looking woman. Next to the most beautiful woman in my circle of friends she would look almost alien. STUNNING

Very true Jaz, B&W and lighting etc. do help the cause a lot. But as someone who has done a lot of work with photographers over the years, I know that there really is no substitute for good bone structure and aesthetically pleasing spacing of facial features. Fortunately for these women, they were born with a face that acts as a brilliant canvass.

At the end of the day we’re all born different. Some people are blessed with looks, others are blessed with sporting abilty or an artistic flair. There’s nothing at all wrong with admiring people for this. When it comes to these women, their beauty is like a piece of art.

It would be truly awesome if we could all embrace people for their natural gifts, instead of being jealous of them or getting a complex about them. Then we might be able to stop focussing on what we don’t have, and start to explore and embrace the different natural talents that we are all born with.

They all do look gorgeous but I think they do have makeup on just not the full works they normally have. This is more the ‘natural’ look but done with makeup nonetheless.

I love seeing photos of supermodels or celebrities with a sister who is similar in age to them. That usually shows you how much work they have had done and how ‘natural’ they really are.

The whole “celebs without makeup” thing is bullshit. Doesnt mean the photographs arent retouched..and besides..anyone who has worked in photoshoots etc would know alot has to do with lighting and different lenses. Dont be fooled!

Agreed. As a teenage boy she was all over my walls; every available space was covered with even the smallest photo of her ripped from a magazine. I am so impressed by the way she has aged — or her ability not to. I love the fact that she’s never been a diva, has something else in her life — other than modelling — and has time to be a mother.

Bone structure and face shape perfection are a bigger help than make up any day, these women hardly need it in the first place so it is no wonder they look good here.

It’s clearly all about bone structure … and lack of colour! I’m insisting everyone looks at me through black and white lenses from now on! :)

PS – Claudia Schiffer is looking a whole heap better here than in her recent advertisements. Her face looks less gaunt or something?
