By LUCY ORMONDE
I’d like to take this moment to thank the Fashion Gods for bringing glasses back into fashion.
I only wish glasses were as fashionable when I was in high school as they are now.
You remember that girl in your Year 7 English class with the braces and the glasses? That was me. Braces AND glasses.
Parties sucked. Ski trips were a nightmare (imagine wearing glasses under goggles) and there was no such thing as a prescription sunglass that didn’t look like it was plucked from the shelf of my grandparents’ house.
Nothing I wore matched the bright blue aqua frames I chose from the ‘teenage’ section at the optometrist – except the books I was carrying around in my library bag.
Man, it was tough.
But fortunately – for me anyway – things have changed in recent years. Glasses are cool, prescription sunnies suddenly aren’t restricted to the fold up-fold down variety, and I’m kissing the pages of my fashion magazines to celebrate.
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine walked into a party wearing a pair of kick-ass thick-rimmed frames that made everyone stop and stare.
‘
When she walked up to say hello, my first question to her was not “how are you?” (which it should have been) but rather “where do I get those glasses?” (because that’s what was really what I cared about.)
The answer? Specsavers.
The next day I took myself to the closest store and promptly bought the same pair. In two different colours. And the best part? They were so well priced they should have been free.
So when the girls from Specsavers came to Mamamia on a sunny spring day this week to show us Specsavers’ new range of prescription sunglasses, we all went a little nuts trying on the many, many styles they pulled out of their Mary Poppins-esque bag.
Think thick frames. Think thin. There were colours. Black. Tortoiseshell. Colours. Oh the colours! The collection ranges as follows: glamour, vintage, classic and sporty. Alex Perry. Country Road. Tommy Hilfiger. Osiris. Quiksilver. Roxy. And something to fit everyone’s face shape. (I for one have a very flat nose that doesn’t hold sunnies well)
Sun protection has never looked so stylish.
I’m not going to lie to you…. Wearing glasses can still have its moments – just last week, there was the moment I fell asleep on a flight and dropped my glasses and had to ask an able-eyed person to help me search the floor – but at least now we can do it with a little more style.
That is, when we can find our glasses.

Oh, neon! It reminds me of a youth spent in scrunchies, pop socks and hyper colour t-shirts.

Scarves! They can dress up an outfit or just make it look complete. They are simple and stylish. I love them.

Fair skin. An ‘orange’ fake tan has never suited me, so I’m glad that naturall, ‘peaches & cream’ skin is back. It’s much more ‘sun safe’ too!

I am grateful for the return lady like fashion. 1940s and 50s ladylike fashion to be precise. I love a full skirt or at the other end of the spectrum a pencil skirt. And soft chiffon like blouses. I love that I can feel both professional and feminine in this style. Too many years in black and grey pant suits that could easily have been for a man, I adore the beautiful styles.
Thank you Mad Men is all I can say!

I’m grateful that demin shorts have come back in fashion and that I haven’t grown any taller since I was 12, so I can wear my pair from 1996. Ditto for the bulk of the 90s fashion trend. I’m not shopping, I’m recycling all of my old early high-school-esque wardrobe! Thrifty and effective.

Wellies! Love that they’re fashionable for adults and my red ones are cute to boot. Perfect for festivals, winter and the beach and you’d be surprised how great they look with most things.

Headbands! Blair Waldorf is the difference between looking cool and looking like an overgrown five year old…

So grateful that higher waisted jeans are back – nothing worse than a muffin top!!

Skinny jeans and wedges because I am useless at walking in stilettos. I need the wedge-style base of support!

I can’t wait to wear my cat eye sunglasses when the sun eventually decides to come out again! They have stood the test of elegance and style and even more elegant when teamed with floral patterns!
Cat eye sunglasses are rooted from the 50s/early 60s fashion, adding a chic touch of glam and vintage to your look but the best thing is that cat eye sunglasses come in multiple variations and styles, so they’re wearable for a wide range of faces! The “PURR”fect accessory for everyone!

The fitted jackets and tops with the frill around the waist. Hides a multitude of sins!

Adult Jelly Bellies. I just kind of LOVE THEM.

Glomesh!!! I just love it… Oh wait… Is it just me… Oh well, I figure if I buy enough of it it will come back in a big way!!

Raybans and oversized t-shirts with skinny jeans. Great look!

Denim shirts. This weekend I rummaged through my mum’s cupboard and found a beautiful (soft, perfectly worn in so I can scrunch up the sleeves halfway) denim shirt.
Me: It’s perfect!
Mum: Oh dear, I thought that had been sent to the rag bin.
And glasses. Because I can’t do contact lenses and I’m blind without them.

Comfortable 70s Colorful Skinny Jeans that move with you like wearing leggings.

Floral Jackets! I have my mums old one from the 80′s(ish) and I cant wait to bring it out again!

Layering – always covers a multitude of sins!

High wasted pants – way more flattering than hipsters!

everything that my mother held onto for me and my sister, oroton glomesh clutches, huge vintage tortoiseshell sunglasses, floor length skirts, statement belt buckles, it is all amazing!
(the only downside being that i am already hoarding so that one day my children can first die with embarassment of all the treasures i saved for them, then a few years later wear them all when they come back around in the circle of life that is fashion!!)

Leopard print!!!!!
Not that I ever stopped wearing it anyway
loading...
I have to say I am so happy that shoulder pads are back!! I think there is nothing sharper looking than a jacket or top with a statement shoulder piece, think Dallas and I LOVE it!!

definetely thicker eyebrows. no one looks good with thin eyebrows (makes you look like an alien, creepy).
loading...
Desert Boots! Loved them, and now you can get them with wedges – even better

I’m thankful for stars like Dita Von Teese and Cate Blanchett embracing their fair complexion, keeping their skin healthy and young by staying out of the sun and making milky skin fashionable again!

Colour blocking from the 60′s has returned in full blast style! Not wasting any time, the bright bursts of colour can be seen on the amazing blazers that are often paired with three quarter skinny jeans and beautiful wedges. Mamamia, Colour Blocking is bringing beauty back (and striking at that!)!

I spent most of primary school with a daggy thick fringe. Thank you to Zooey Deschanel for making my primary school fringe uber-cool!
loading...
Colour blocking. Neons and bright bold colours never looked so good. Less ’80s faux pas and more fun and stylishness!
loading...
50s one-piece cossies – Marilyn Monroe style, va-va-voom! I feel sexy, chic and oh so curvylicious and with a bit of edge, I can sunbake and swim!

I Spent my adolescence wearing straight legged jeans, pilgrim tops and boobs tubes and the dreaded Fluorescent orange satin flares (Shameful v. shameful). None of which did anything but make me hate my hour glass shape.
So definitely love the fact that retro/kitsch came back in fashion as I am in love with colourful cardigans, tights and 1950′s waist-ed dresses! also just love that when you grow up you learn to develop your own stye/wardrobe rather than wearing whatever you see everyone else wearing, so liberating!

I’m just happy that being a “comic book nerd” is cool thanks to the fabulous Marvel franchises. Thank you to the world for finally realising that we “nerds” are just really, really enthusiastic fans!

Maxi dresses! Great for spring days like today…Hides my winter pale, hairy legs!

Belts of all shapes and sizes, thick and thin. They accentuate your waist and add that something extra special to an outfit. Bringing the whole outfit together, so chic!

Peplum skirts, thank you. Those of us with a bit more junk in the trunk need something to help make our bodacious booty more awesome than it already is!

I am SO glad that thick eye brows are back in fashion! Woohoo.
I have dark hair and black, thick eyebrows(thank you dad). I’ve tried going thinner, but it’s too much work and actually looking at myself on photos, I found it doesn’t look as good as when I keep them a bit thicker.

Thank you, fashion gods, for making boob tubes and skinny straps less hot than they were a few years back, and instead making floaty tops with straps (and sleeves, no less!) cool again. Those of us who find strapless bras a) uncomfortable, and b) unforgiving thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Cardigans! I wear them year-round. I’d like to thank the fashion gods for not relegating them to grandma-status! x

The return of the boyleg swimsuit. I was a shy, pasty-skinned child / teenager / 20-something who HATED summer’s trial (the one where you had to try on every swimsuit to find one that didn’t make you break out in a sweat for fear of showing too much skin). That was the 80s/90s and early naughties… but in the past few years, hail to the designers for bringing back the 40s, 50s and 60s and funky, fun – and low slung – swimsuits!

I was a glasses and braces kid too. and at least you got invited to parties Lucy!

Women actually wearing clothes.
How nice it is to walk down the street and not see midriffs… Until short shorts with bum cheeks hanging out came back in.
We are finally seeing some feminity and class coming back into fashion!

I am so glad shorter length dresses are coming back in, especially the retro style ones. I am so short that a maxi dress looks like a tent on me, infact I have had friends laugh at me(in a good natured way) when I have tried them on as they usually have about 6inches bunched up on the floor at my feet. The knee skimming and a little shorter lengths look best on me and I am seeing lots of them in the shops now ready for spring and summer! Yay! Now I just need some really cool prescription sunnies to go with my new amazing frocks

I have been wearing glasses since before I was two years old !! So how could I possibly say anything but GLASSES???
Especially the bigger framed glasses.
They are my friends!
After 33 years of wearing glasses and trying to join in on the smaller frames that were so popular for like ever, they don’t look too hot on me. I can’t wait to get a new pair and get my cool nerd on !!

Boot leg and flared jeans They are so much more flattering and comfortable than skinny jeans
unless your skinny skinny mini
loading...
That was me also: Glasses and braces!
loading...
one of the most annoying things about wearing glasses – 3D movies! You have to wear double glasses! So dorky.
loading...
Try glasses (big wire rimmed round frames on very small face), braces and a terrible terrible haircut dubbed ‘the mongrol’ by my siblings. And just in time to start high school! Character building?!
loading...
SING IT, SISTER! I used to hate my glasses, but now we’re friends finally. The ones in this pic are from Specsavers actually!
loading...
Awesome – what style are they?
loading...
Prescription sunglasses are SO hard to find. At least nice ones are anyway. You know the ones your grandpa used to wear that fold down? I’ve almost gone there….

I’m a little embarrassed to say this but a couple of months ago I was so desperate for glasses, I went to the optometrist and just asked him to check my eyes – just in case! Turns out I’m slightly short sighted

KC, i did the same thing… I used to need glasses but after 20 years of wearing them i no longer did… I went to the optometrsit about 6 months ago just cos i wanted glasses again… so in the end, i just got some clear lens raybans which are awesome
