“I’m using rosehip oil like you recommended, but am finding that it’s not as hydrating as my night cream… Am I missing something??” –  Kerry.

Uh oh, Kerry. I think I know what’s going on here. Some dingus (“probably Zoë Foster”) has bullied you into buying rosehip oil, but hasn’t explained how to use it properly.

First things first, you’ve made an excellent purchasing decision. Whether you bought the Kosmea, Trilogy, Endota, Kora or Crazy Clint’s brand (I recommend his version a little less than the former options), you’ve done good.

Picture 7 The best priced, most effective skin product. Ever.

Kosmea rosehip oil

Rosehip oil – which is made from the bud of the rose, so do NOT expect it to smell in any way like roses, it’s pretty… unrosy, to be honest – offers a way to stave off the signs of ageing if you’re younger, and a clever way to revitalise and diminish the signs of ageing if you’ve already started seeing them. You can find it at the chemist and health food shop and it will be around 20 clams. Probably the best-priced, most effective skin care you’ll find.

It’s kind of a do-it-all, rosehip oil. It will hydrate the skin, aid with evening out skin tone and lightening pigmentation, fade acne scarring and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, help to keep the skin firm and bouncy, and because it’s almost entirely made of fatty acids, it’s terrific for skin cell regeneration and repair.  In addition to all of this, it has antioxidant properties – great for post-sun exposure – and vitamin A, which is great for balancing oily skin, (people with oily or congested skin should have no problem using rosehip oil) and probably the best anti-ageing tool on earth.

It’s real good shit, in other words.

Thing is, even though it’s lovely and hydrating and nourishing, it is not enough for your skin to just use an oil.

You see, the skin consists of both oils and moisture, and it needs both of these things to function at optimal health. So, we use both! At night, apply your rosehip oil onto clean skin, in the same way you would apply your serum (and yes, it counts as one), and then apply your moisturiser.

I was using it well before I became a beauty know-all, and always panic if I run out. I love to slather it on my face when I’m on a long flight as a kind of mid-air facial, but usually use it at night (as well as an additional, more specific serum to target my pigmentation) under night cream. Give that a whirl, Kez! Give that a big, rosy whirl.

I ve blemish prone skin. Currently using renew rose hip oil after cleansing and followed by tea tree oil on the pimple area. I find it extremely useful. My face become clearer after 4 days with the combination use of rho and tea tree oil. Being using twice a day without moisturier n notice a little peeling on the pimples probably due to effect from tea tree oil to dry up the pimples. Will try with a moisturer base on zoe’s recommendation.

I try to steer clear of all chemical products if I can, so no commercial moisturiser or serum if I can avoid it. Rosehip is good stuff. Also, at night, I use organic coconut oil. It’s solid in a jar but melts on contact. It’s around $10 from the health food shop.

I like using waterproof mascara, however it never seems to wash off even if I use products claiming to ‘remove all makeup: including waterproof mascara’. Any suggestions?

I have found Paw paw ointment is the best for removing water proof mascara and those lovely red lipsticks that love to live on your skin well after your Saturday night out and into your Monday morning meeting. Smack a bit onto a makeup removing pad and wipe off. And there are no chemicals to it’s safe to use on your eyes.

Just so you know ! – The paw paw ointment that everyone loves that comes in the red tube (sorry, can’t remember the brand…) is actually mostly made from petroleum jelly. I.e. it is not that much different to vaseline. Since I discovered this I refuse to buy it anymore.

Also, I find a little bit of olive oil works wonders for getting off waterproof mascara. Although I hate how hard it is to get off so never buy waterproof mascara anymore!

This may sound pretty stupid, but is sunscreen good to use instead of moisturizer? I don’t really go out in the sun much, I work in an office but I was thinking it still might be good for my skin.

Love rosehip oil! Been using it for years – however, the brands you’ve mentioned Zoe, are revoltingly overpriced. I suggest to ALL, the Perfect Potion one – it’s $14.95 for 25ml or $25.95 for 50ml. It’s made from Australian, cold-pressed organic rosehips too. Kosmea is about $45 for 40ml and Trilogy is about $20 for 20ml.
I’ve tried all three, and they’re identical – but Perfect Potion is heaps cheaper!!!

Also, Aesop have a facial treatment called Damascan Rose Facial Treatment which is incredible. It’s pretty pricey – in the $75-85 range these days, I think, but it’s base is in rosehip oil with other oils like neroli and violet. Neroli is antibacterial and regenerative so it’s great for damaged skin. I used to work for Aesop and can vouch for the quality of the ingredients that they use in their products! I find this treatment a little heavy for my skin as it’s super hydrating, but for those with very dry, damaged or sensitive skin, it’s amazing. Can’t recommened it enough!

But if you’re on a budget, plain, pure rosehip oil does wonders, as Zoe rightly says.

Ooh other brand I buy is A’kin – you can sometimes get it on special at Priceline, but the Perfect Potion one sounds even cheaper maybe!

    I love Rosehip oil too.
    It’s brilliant.
And a big hint…less is more. You only need the smallest amount and it goes a long way. Perhaps those who are having trouble with it maybe try a little less? Or every other day rather than daily?
I find (with sensitive, hormonal skin) that too much can flare things up. But one or two drops is perfect.

I also recommend macadamia oil. As a face or all over body oil, along with RHO, especially in winter.

Zoe, I must disgree with your comment that RHO is probably the most effective anti aging tool on earth – I think you will find that dermatologists would give that accolade to sunscreen.

I have bought some RHO though and am looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I’m totally off topic but…hope you have some advise for chicks with specs and how to apply eye make-up. I would love to ooze ‘sexy librarian’ but either look like Mimi from The Drew Carey Show (remember her with the bright green eye-shadow up to the brows) or completely washed out! I find the thing that adds to the dilemma is the lens magnify my eyes and then I have a heavy (however funky) dark frame surrounding that area.

I had been using rosehip oil on my face for about a year and Bio Oil on my body after a shower and my skin has never been better. My oily skin is no longer oily/shiny either.

THEN I did something that’s probably really bad…ran out of rosehip so started using a few drops of Bio Oil on my face as I would rosehip. I don’t know if this is officially a clever thing to do but I swear my skin in EVEN BETTER and I find it easier traveling with the one product.

    Happy oiling ladies :)

I don’t think using Bio Oil on your face is bad…pretty sure it says somewhere on the leaflet that it is good for your face too? I occasionally use it at night, and my skin always looks great the next morning.

On a side note isn’t Bio Oil as a body moisturiser brilliant?! I started using it just on my tummy when I was pregnant but now I use it everywhere. Best idea ever.

Yes, I use Bio Oil on my face too – I prefer it to Rosehip Oil (I got allergic). I slather it on at night, under a moisturiser and when I wake up my skin is plump and moisturised. I think it’s great for really dry skin too!

      KatiePotatie

I use my rosewater mist as a toner (with a cotton round to wipe off the excess). I don’t know if that’s right but it works ok for me :)
I also know some people use it as a refresher spray during the day. I’ve never done that myself as I am generally wearing makeup.

    • GD Star Rating

      amyintheworld

The Jurlique mists are toners – however I prefer using it as a refresher. Toner is my cheaty way of cleansing, if I haven’t worn makeup during the day. I use cotton pads (Aldi make THE BEST ones – the brand is called Ophelia and they’ve just redone the packaging and they now contain aloe, they’re like 89 cents a pack!) and pour (or spray if you have a spray) onto the pad and wipe gently done the face – it’s rids the skin of traces of dirt the cleanser might have missed, as well as traces of cleanser!

Love your stuff Zoe! I have recently bought Amazing Face and LOVE it! But have just turned 30 so am adjusting my skincare regime as per your recs for women over 30. I’m totally overtaking Zoe’s job… I miss working in skincare!

You apply a serum underneath a moisteriser. A small amount in the palms of your hands (however I actually like it onmy fingers because that’s where I have the best contro to massage it in!), and massage gently into the skin, avoiding the eye area. let it absorb a few mins (my tip is this: wash face, tone, apply serum/oil… brush your teeth and floss while it absorbs!), then apply cream. However, there are some serums that can be used alone as a moisteriser! Aesop make serums which can be used alone or under a cream, and Jurlique’s Herbal Recovery Gel can be used alone for those with oilier skin.

Get dry shampoo. I have fine hair that can get very oily- I used to wash it daily.
Now, I wash it twice a week, and freshen up each day imbetween with dry shampoo.

Batisse make a good one, it’s about $10 from Priceline.

Hair can get oily if it’s overwashed because the natural oils get stripped from the scalp and it freaks out and over-produces sebum to protect itself (same goes with one’s face… too much scrubbing is bad!). I used to wash my hair every day and had the same problem. Then a hairdresser who was obsessed with natural stuff begged me to try every second day. The first few weeks were gross, but it did get better. Now my hair is great and I prefer it on the non-wash day (not frizzy!).
Also, are you only applying shampp at the scalp? Don’t pile your hair and lather it all, because rinsing the shampoo out is enough to cleanse the shaft of your hair. Then, only apply conditioner to the midlengths and ends. This seriously helps!
As Alexia said, get a dry shampoo. They work wonders while your hair is rebalancing.

    • GD Star Rating

      JL

also dont use supermarket shampoos and conditions! they have glycerine in them to “give you shine” but they are really crap for your hair! Have a chat with your hairdresser and get a good product! and keep conditioners away from your roots!!
      good luck :)

I love the Natio rosehip oil – mighty affordable, easy to dispense and slathering it on at night make my world a better place.

I usually exfoliate in the morning and use a stronger vitamin C serum/moisturiser then, or if my skin is really gunky I do both at night.

I wake up looking 10 years younger when I do this. If I don’t for a few nights, I look my age… bummer

Also I find any facial oils tend to help with my congestion – clears everything out quickly without a nasty stipping cleanser

Unfortunately I have terrible problems with my super-sensitive eyes if I use rosehip – or any – oil on my face! It doesn’t matter how little I use or how far away I keep it from my eyes, it always creeps in there and creates problems. Such a shame as I suspect my skin would really benefit from it, but it’s just not worth the sore, red eyes….

Sorry, but you shouldn’t layer moisturiser OVER rosehip oil. Oil (no matter how lovely and absorbe-y it is) creates a barrier over the skin. Putting a water-based product on top of it is a waste of moisturiser. Put your moisturiser on first and apply rosehip five minutes later!

Quite a genuine question – In other articles today it has referenced mamamia’s stance on airbrushing. Why are we by talking about Zoe’s airbrushed pic?
No offense Zo, you are attractive, but this is heavily touched up. And the one in Cosmo is super stretched.

Four sessions cost approx $500 altogether, but if it’s something you’re really self-conscious about, it’s worth it. I’m looking forward to my skin after the second treatment.

I think my face looks better overall if I am using these products but I am not sure if putting blush on top of pimples rates highly in make up etiquette rules? Can you please give me some advice please? Thanks a million :) ))

      AliE,
I have one word for you- Neostrata. After about 2 years of hormonal inbalanace breakouts and no cure I raided the Interweb for an answers and discovered all the skin care I needed was at the CHEMIST. Neostrata is all about AHAs and PHAs that do WONDERS for my acne. Within 2 days I saw the most amazing improvement. I know I sound like an ad or a sponsored post but Im not. Just wished someone had told me about it. Give it a shot and then bronze away! I can now wander around with no foundation on!

Neostrata is GOLD – and it’s the best kept skincare secret ever. They spend their $$ on product development and research instead of advertising, so most people have never heard of it. I’ve used the face cream plus (10) for years now and always get compliments about my skin – people can’t believe I had really bad acne as a teen.

Oh, thank you so much for this tip. I am an Advanced Natural convert for my skin care (The AHA range) but it is quite expensive & I am about to run out so I will give NeoStrata a go & see what it’s like. Off to the chemist I go! Awesome!

Yes Neostrata is good but it has a low % of AHA / BHA if you are allergic to asprin don’t use a BHA. You could try ASAP

Hi Zoe. Long time stalker, first time commenter. Thanks to your book, I got rid of all of my skincare and makeup as I realized I’d completely grown out of it at nearly 40, and have had an absolute hoot starting over again!
You mentioned using rose hip oil as well as your serum. Which do you use first? Serum or rose hip oil?

    • GD Star Rating

      geishagirl

She actually says “apply your rosehip oil onto clean skin, in the same way you would apply your serum (and yes, it counts as one), and then apply your moisturiser.” — so use the Rosehip oil as a serum, not as well as one.

I use Dermalogica Precleanse (which is basically an oil) to get rid of my thick sunscreen, would then using Rosehip Oil be too much?

hi zoe, a bit off the topic, but just in case you are there… i hear that exfoliating your skin is a necessity and have been doing so for ages, but recently i find that EVERYTIME i exfoliate my face i have breakouts… I am confused :(

Maybe try a chemical exfoliant as opposed to a physical exfoliant? The beads may be aggravating your skin.

Aveda botanicals exfoliant can be used daily, super gentle but mighty effective, removed my problems with flare ups from stronger “gritty” exfoliants

What product are you using? I was using an Olay one and had the wierdest reaction to it! I had used Olay for years but tried a slightly different one and broke out all over my face and neck. Absolutely disgusting. Try using a different exfoliating product, or just use a normal cleaner but after applying it, wipe your face with a face washer – it will still exfoliate it but wont be as harsh. Exfoliation is great but especially if you are really young, your skin regenerates fast enough to only need occasional/light exfoliation.

thanks guys for the replys. I am exfolianting once a week and have swapped products as well. I will look into the brands that you have suggested. i use aveda hair products but never tried their skin range, might be a good one to start with. its just a bit frustrating as it did not happen before… thanks heaps again x

Not sure if this has already been asked, but what serum do you recommend for pigmentation?

I have quite noticible pigmentation under my eyes and do use rosehip oil as well as Darphins ‘Melaperfect’ but to be honest havent really seen any lightening or change at all really!

Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated! as i am sick of trying products that doent work! :(

I agree about Clinique, if you’re talking about ‘even better’ (think it’s called that?). I have acne scarring and it hasn’t cleared up in the 8 months I’ve been using it. Feels nice though. I am loving rose hip.

A response in this thread mentions to only use one however in your initial article at the top u state u use rosehip oil plus something for pigmentation which makes me think I can use both under my night cream?? Ps I think u are pretty amazing :)

I have had bad hormonal pigmentation and scarring from picking hormonal pimples twice in my life and both times I have used John Plunketts Superfade Face Cream. This time I am also using his Superfade Accelerator and the results are quite frankly AMAZING! Within two weeks all of my marks have virtually disappeared!

The best thing is that they can easily be bought from a pharmacy and cost $30 and $20 respectively, so not going to break the budget.

      PLEASE try them :)

Uneven pigmentation begins in the deepest layer of the epidermis and takes many years to surface and become apparent. Therefore, I’m sure you can understand that it takes quite a while to fade – approximately 18 months of pro treatments and suitable homecare. Don’t expect pigmentation treatments to work overnight. :)

Trilogy is better product than Endota, as well as being cheaper. The endota comes in a poorly designed pump bottle, which is too small, pumps ineffectively once there’s less left, and is not a clear bottle, so you don’t realise you’re run out until, well, you’ve run out. Trilogy is fab – go snap some up!

I have some and tried it but I started to break out so I stopped. I have very fair skin with freckles and I tend to be quite dry rather than oily. I used it in the recommended way but then some pimples appeared so I stopped. Maybe I was using it wrong? I was really disappointed to be honest, I had heard SUCH great things about it.

I really want to share my bargain beauty tip!

I bought virgin organic coconut oil (you prob wont find it at a supermarket, go to a health food store) and have been using it as a moisturiser for my whole body and face. It is quite heavy so I only use a tiny bit.

The other thing I did with it was warmed it up and put it on my dry hair, worked it through until the hair was saturated and then let it sit in a hot towel for 30 mins. You then wash and condition your hair as normal and my hair was FREAKIN shiny- much more shiny than any other treatment I’ve used, including Moroccan oil.

You can also cook with it- its kind of a miracle oil!

Anyway if people are looking for an organic, cheap, effective natural beauty product definitely put it on your list!
