If you’ve recently won the Lotto or if you’re Gina Rinehart, then you should probably stop reading this now. You see, this post will be of no use to you. Sorry.
You see, today we’re talking trends and how to stay on them (or in them?) when you don’t have a fortune to spend. So if you aren’t interested in looking awesome and saving lots of money then it’s time for you to move along.
We know that it can be pretty hard to keep yourself and your house looking up-to-date without accidentally spending the money you were supposed to be using to pay rent, buy the kids school shoes or get some extra groceries. You know, live and stuff.
Kmart isn’t always the first place that comes to mind when you think about shopping for fashion or to re-style your living room. But you know what we have discovered? It really, really should be.
The entire Mamamia editorial team went to Kmart recently. It was like a school excursion but with no daggy and compulsory floppy hats and FAR SUPERIOR take-home souvenirs.
If we’re completely honest with you… we went kinda NUTS. Okay really nuts. Like a hyperactive squirrel nuts.
There’s neon, there’s colour, there are stylish items in every aisle.
The clothes are of good quality, they’re no throw-away after one wear stuff. They are also right on trend – there was more neon in the t-shirt section of Kmart than in the whole of Mia’s wardrobe. And that’s saying something. The kitchen items and the decorative household stuff were also similarly stylish and practical.
And the best part of all? The prices are so LOW. Forget about forking out a month’s pay on that sparkly top that’s only going to be cool for about 2 months – you can get it at Kmart for the same amount that you probably spent on breakfast that morning.
Take a look at our Kmart ‘Finds’ and leave your own in the comment below.

These bags are rad. But I faced the inevitable dilemma of which colour? But at $15 a pop - it seemed easier to just buy both. - Jamila Rizvi, Managing Editor

i consider the ‘value’ of something to be cost-per-wear.
on a recent trip to k-mart i also got very excited about the cheap, on trend tops… i bought 2 because i couldn’t decide. one i washed… it was so badly shrunk and warped that I have never worn it… so that’s a total loss of $15. another i washed and it shrunk and i wore it because I had an obsession with high skirts and midrif tops so it sort of worked… it got through about 3 washes before it fell appart and warped completely. so in my logic even though they cost me only $15… they were very expensive…

I was looking for some plain black pumps, there was only one pair left and in my size! The tag said $40 and the sale sticker said $10. When I got to the checkout they came to $2! Fist pump oh yeah!

I recently went into Kmart to buy some jewellery holders to store my necklaces. The lovely assistant suggested I should get purchase some small tackle boxes instead. At $8 a pop, now my jewellery cabinet looks organised!

The thing I;ve noticed recently and this post confirms it, is that women are admitting to the buying clothes from Kmart. No-one used to talk about Kmart for womens fashion before.
loading...
I dont actually buy my clothes yet from Kmart – I;m not convinced of the quality but certainly my work colleagues do.

When I moved out of home for university, my mother came to visit. She said I had a better equipped kitchen than hers! Yup, I agree! Thanks Kmart!

I have a secret indulgence… I love going to Kmart and just grazing around for bargains… especially in the cosmetics section… nail polishes, lipstiicks etc. I love the basic pieces and also a few key seasonal pieces. I love the CD section and DVD section – sometimes I spend hours in there just looking at buying stuff, which is economical! I use Kmart alot of home stuff aswell cushions, vases, kitchen ware and cutlery…..

Ive always been a Kmart fan, but my biggest bargain came when we had to move from Adelaide to Melbourne so our unborn baby could have open heart surgery. We didn’t pack too many baby clothes because we didn’t think he’d get to wear much in hospital anyway and I guess we were too deep in shock to really organise anything. Even though our little boy had 3 open heart surgeries in 3 months, he fought hard and came out of hospital quite quickly and we had nothing for him to wear!! To our surprise and delight, kmart was open all hours (unheard of in SA) and I left the hubby behind and went very late night shopping… I scored so many baby clothes marked down to $1 or $2 and I started to cry when I found a top which said “mummy’s little hero” in my sons size!! Kmart really helped us at a scary and overwhelming time in our lives, and I still have that tiny top, it’ll be framed one day

Oh my goodness, I have 100s of stories about mega bargains, most of them involving KMart! If I’m ever looking for anything for fancy dress/book week, a themed party, or a costume for a show (I’m an actor), and KMart always has what I need! To say nothing of everyday, on-trend basics for the whole family. But if that wasn’t enough, the already amazing prices are regularly discounted to ridiculously cheap!
My favourite thing is to buy little goodies for kids’ Santa sacks or party bags from birthday parties – rather than giving them more lollies that they end up regretting! I can get all sorts of little treasures, including beautiful ‘grown up’ jewellery and clothing, as well as cool toys, for next to nothing, that kids love and enjoy for ages!

I love a good K-Mart bargain!
I’d also love to shop at store with good ethical policies and values however, as a university student I just don’t have that option. K-Mart is one of a few stores that fit into my student budget!

I usually buy my daughter’s shirts from kmart. They have a great range, are really pretty and a bargain for around $6!
I also think you cant go past their stationary and craft range, my daughter loves it!

I had searched high and low for a polo neck t-shirt without thinking of K-Mart. Of course the minute I did think of them I went in and had them in every colour under the sun. I was thrilled.

The best bargain I’ve ever found was at the post-Christmas sales at Kmart last year. From memory it was something like 25 cents for either 700g of natural fruit & nut mix or Chilli and Lime Nut & fruit mix. (expiry date November this year). There were people there loading up trolley-full of the stuff. Great party nibblies.

One thing that I don’t understand about the arguments against cheap labour is that, isn’t a job in a factory making cheap clothes still better than the alternative for those workers? The alternative being possibly prostitution, homelessness, going without food etc.? I’m not for a moment saying it’s a good job, but imagine a situation where we all stop buying cheap stuff, and all those workers lose their jobs. I don’t think they’d be very thankful?
loading...
Hi Tripitaka,
I understand your point but many people in poor countries were forced into this kind of work because their land was taken and their way of life has now irreversibly changed forever when factories and big brand businesses were built on the land they once lived on and therefore their livelihood and communities were destroyed and seen as ‘meaningless’ to support our ‘economic’ consumption.
So you see they have no choice except to do the work in the factories now or earn money in other ways you have mentioned because our rampant consumption has forced them to only see a way of life that supports us – a form of modern imperialism at play. It is very sad and something I don’t think many of us can fathom because it is not our reality.
I know this site finds it amusing to use the phrase “first world problem” but I suggest we all take a look at ourselves and how we live and the choices we make and ask why there is a poverty industry and did we somehow help create it through our mass consumption?
I am not trying to come across ‘holier than thou’ or ‘rain on the shopping parade’ here I am also as guilty as the next person. I just think we need to critically think things through now that we are becoming better informed global citizens.
loading...
Hi Penny,
Thanks for your reply. My issue with a lot of comments on this thread is that few people seem to really know what those workers want. Has anyone asked them? Their voice should be heard in this debate. I’m sure that there are different opinions among them, but I would like to hear them. For the time being, it seems to be mainly being discussed by well-meaning, yet possibly ill-informed people in Australia, who have little idea of what those people really want.
I completely agree that too much consumption = bad, and waste = very bad, but I’m not convinced that Kmart is any worse than a more expensive brand in that respect.
loading...
Hi Tripitaka,
Social scientists such as anthropologists understand this human phenomenon and therefore do ask questions along these lines. Just because people answer in the affirmative that they want a job does not mean that they are not exploited or powerless in the context of their environment or work practices. I agree that Kmart isn’t probably any worse but they are one of the dominators here in Australia.

Paula Joye took me shopping in KMart last year (when we were touring together) and showed me what a terrific place it is to pick up staple items. I bought a fabulous black and white striped maxi skirt for about $15 that I wear ALL THE TIME in summer. And, as Paula pointed out to me, t doubles as a strapless dress.
I also tend to buy Fin and Ava’s clothes from there …. bargain city.

My best and cheapest purchase at kmart was a pack of 2 travel thermos mugs for $3. My husband is a tradie and uses his all the time, I’m a stay at home mum of 3 kids and each morning will make a cup of tea for it to only get cold before I can drink it in the mad rush.
It will stay hot now for hours, I take it in the car to school drop off also. I just love it! And so cheap! I always go to kmart as I know they have the lowest price.

Best buy at Kmart? A children’s book for my son. Cost…2 cents. Yes, it scanned at 2 cents. I went back in and bought all they had for the grand total of 20 cents. Bargain!
loading...
I used to work at kmart years ago when I was a full time uni student – loved it! I made brilliant friends for life.
Best bargain I got recently was a beautiful dress for an upcoming ball for $40 down from $175 from New York last week
loading...
I love the Kmart maternity range, its a really expensive time and who needs to spend hundreds on clothes you will wear for a few months. The t shirts I bought have all lasted so well they have been put away for next time! I think they cost around $15 each, such great value.
loading...
I love K-Mart, especially at end of season with the even further reduced prices! I try to buy my kids clothing for 12 months time then so I always have appropriate seasonal clothing for them. We also loved the K-Mart toy sale! We love fly buys too! We recently converted our fly buys points to vouchers and got a lovely lot of toys. We even put some away for upcoming birthdays! We would love a $100 K-Mart voucher!
loading...
I love Kmart, I can get good quality kids everyday clothes cheap, which leaves more to spend on other things, and the fact that its open extended hours is magic. We were sitting around late one night with relatives, talking about the bopit toy we used to have and all the fun we had with it, I jumped in the car, shot down to kmart grabbed one and was back within 20 mins for another great night of fun. Love it.

I love this post. My friend recently started a blog about fashion under $50 http://www.lessthanapineapple.com and I can’t believe the great stuff that is out there. Saves me heaps of time and money!!

Aww thanks Jodes. Glad you like it x

I picked up a batman boys dress up from size 3 to 5yrs old from woolworths in mt hawthorn a few weeks ago they were going out for just $3.00 from $20.00 as they were trying to get rid of this line to sell, that is the best bargain ive ever come across.

Cork wedges – actually the comfiest heels I have ever owned!! $10 from k-mart!! Nude, so trendy, I get comments every time I wear them and I am actually proud to say k-mart
Huge soup mugs – $2 from kmart, me and my housemate bought matching ones, but choose to drink ridiculous amount of tea out of them instead of soup!! Perfect study buddy all winter!!
loading...
I love my fantastic bright red ceramic lasagne dishes from Kmart! $10 and they’ve been through the dishwasher and oven SO MANY TIMES and are still bright red. Absolute bargain.

I lurve Kmart!!
In my family we have this little joke that I have ‘magical Kmart powers’ because nearly every time I buy something there it scans up cheaper at the register =D
Some of my best Kmart bargains –
I got two Dora sheet sets for my little girl for $3 each! $3! For sheets!
Last year when they got rid of all their licensed clothing I got a whole heap of Thomas, Cars and Spiderman hoodies for my little man for $3 each too! I put them away for this winter and didn’t have to buy him any other jumpers, they’re great!
I got my daughter a new helmet from kmart a couple of weeks ago and it scanned at $10 cheaper than it was marked, yay!
Some other Kmart stand outs are my $2 glass vase (thats the normal price) in the kids homewear section they have these awesome felt vehicle fairy lights for $10 that I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to buy, and the kids $4/$5 t-shirts.
When you pretty much have to buy your kids a new wardrobe every 6 months because they’ve grown out of everything, you can’t go wrong at that price!
I also have a bunch of jeans and hoodies for myself, will have to go in and check out the new summer range!
Oh and my Toy Sale layby full of half price lala loopsy dolls that kmart is minding until christmas so I don’t have to find a hiding spot for it all

You’re not the only one with Magical K-Mart Powers, Michelle K.
I will, more often than not, pick up something that’s already been heavily reduced – and when I get it to the checkout, I find that it’s somehow become a “secret special” and has been reduced even further!
Go K-Mart!
loading...
I do this too!! I always use the scanners situated around the store because more often than not, the item will be reduced (sometimes significantly!). Target is great for this too!
loading...
Woohoo!!

I have 2 great bargains from Kmart
- Stockings – the funky/patterned ones – I am plus sized (VERY) and very tall, and yet the Kmart stockings 3 pack ‘one size fits all’ somehow fits me. And I’ve worn them to work everyday for 2 winters now and they have not run or got ladders or anything. And I got them on sale for $7 for the pack.
- Kitchen scales. My husband wanted a set of battery operated scales for when he does his random electronics/computer/soldering stuff. So they needed to be able to measure very small amounts. The scales I bought him were 10 bucks (i think). Over the weekend we saw them in a homewares store (same size, exact colour etc – just with the homewares store logo rather than kmart logo) for 45 bucks. WIN !!!
loading...
Oh, and I forgot the awesome glass vases we used for the centrepieces at our wedding. Go Kmart.
loading...
My girlfriends and I will send out a late night, kids in bed, nothing on tv text ‘anyone up for a K-Mart trip?’
loading...
That’s gold.
loading...
And I met my husband while we were working at K-Mart as students!
loading...
I am a hypocrite, I understand all your concerns listed below reasoning why the prices are so cheap however, I don’t get the biggest of wages so its a personal choice to sacrifice part of my conscience to shop here. If it lasts only a few washes I don’t mind. Its seasonal clothing. I’d rather pay $8 and wear it one season and recycle it as a rag (surely I score points for recycling??) rather than pay upwards of $100 and risk never wearing it again…I’d like to think that I make up for it by working in the community sector, volunteering my time and well, be a kind responsible awesome human being the other 98% of the time. Yep, you heard it here first, I am not a perfect saint to humanity!

I bought a gorgeous little black dress from Kmart, on sale for $12. I walked into myer the following week and saw the exact same dress for $99. I LOVE KMART and I wore that dress to a dinner and had so many comments on it.
loading...
My children are Kmart kids! Last bargain I bought was this winter’s track pants for kids for $3. Bought the next size up for all three of them! Just awesome!
loading...
When I moved out of home for the first time a year ago I trekked to KMart to stock my kitchen.
I bought everything (and I mean everything… I may have gone a little ‘kid in a candy store’ while playing gown ups for the first time). I purchased everything from glasses, pots and cutlery to tea towels and these gorgeous coffee, tea, sugar, bread and biscuit tins (a really cute set!) and a cute red casarole dish. My kitchen looked like Nigellas! (in my mind).
I stocked up my entire kitchen for just under $150 – which is nothing when you actually start to think of how much stuff you really need to stock up a kitchen (and how much I really may not have needed at the time but bought anyways cause it was cute and I wanted it
)
loading...
I did this too – all my cooking ware and linen was from Kmart
loading...
I just think the quality at K-mart is dreadful… Nothing lasts more than a couple of washes without looking like it cost the $5 I paid for it.
loading...
i am just terribly disappointed after reading this article.
loading...
How come?

the MM team has alot of credibility with me, and this sort of rubbish makes me lose respect for a website that i am addicted to. the sheer materialistic attitude, lack of ethical buying…i dont even know what to say. a commentator below has posted a link that sums it up.

Hi Alex,
I think Mamamia readers, like all people are diverse in their views and interests. I don’t think that being excited about a new handbag or getting a bargain makes you stupid. Just like having a conversation about politics or philosophy doesn’t make you smart.
We try and make sure there are a range of posts for readers to enjoy each day and diversity it what’s key. Today you’ll find a post about Julian Assange next to a post about cute animal pictures; a post about Akin’s comments in the US about rape, next to a post from a mum about stupid things her kids have done.
I understand if the shopping or fashion stuff isn’t your cup of tea but there are plenty of other options for you to read if that’s the case.
Jamila
loading...
Hi Jamila, it’s not the shopping that is a problem, it is the complete ignorance of what makes these items so cheap. Shopping is great, heartless consumerism is not.
loading...
You dont think your double priced items arent made in sweatshops?
Ha!
loading...
Hi Jamila,
Mamamia does a good job of making big issues accessible to the everywoman- ie. cheat sheets on climate change. And while I’m sure providing a wide range of content to suit every woman’s taste is part of the charter, Mamamia has nonetheless aligned itself with certain values. Take photoshopping in womens’ mags – Mia is an outspoken challenger in this area and that’s great.
But the tone of this article (particularly the photo descriptions) read irresponsibly to me. It felt at odds with the Mamamia brand. I’m not trying to say that bargain-hunting is for idiots, or that people shouldn’t shop. But jumping over to read about Julian Assange doesn’t cancel out the fact that there’s a real problem that your readers are taking issue with here. And that is: the consumerism you promote in this piece is unsustainable.
Maybe someone on the Mamamia team could sign up for Buy Nothing New Month in October and write about the experience? Get some good use out of the Kmart finds?
loading...
Hi Niki
The idea of ethical consumerism versus the whole free trade is fair trade kind of arguments are fascinating. Would love to run a piece addressing it – it just means finding the right author! Any interest from you? If so flick us an email at submission@mamamia.com.au
Jamila x
loading...
But…. where will the slightly pricier shoes and dresses you buy from the boutique stores end up? Ultimately, everything ends up at the tip, regardless of where you buy it from or what it costs.
loading...
Nope. Good quality clothes get handed down, shared, donated, refashioned, reused, kept, loved.
loading...
…. and at the end of their life………… they still go to the tip!
loading...
well… yes… it just depends when… and after how much use…
loading...
But landfill is only one part of the argument, so is cheap labour and treating the other side of the world as ‘producers’ and a dumping ground for our rampant consumerism.
If this site was serious about issues such as philosophy or politics as Jamila claims then it would understand the entire ethical argument – not just one component of it.

Always been of fan of kmart. However, I am a bigger fan now as my local store is now open 24hrs. I always seem to need something urgent after 5pm so its very convenient.
The other thing I like about kmart is their returns policy. Admittedly, I always keep my receipts which helps but I find returning items is always stress-free. Unlike fashion stores.
loading...
I was just at kmart. Womens coloured jeans 15 dollars. i got three pairs…
loading...
Great competition! I’ve had so much luck at K-mart lately – white vests for my 6 year old, $2 for 2! and huge aluminium foil trays for catering for my daughters 18th – $2 for 2. It is my first choice for everyday clothing/homewares for my family
loading...
Its cheaper to buy new at Kmart than buy second-hand at Vinnies.

First day at new job, utterly freezing at work. Sitting at reception, I was so cold that my lips were blue. As the job was new, I hadn’t been paid yet, and my bank balance was just north of $0.00.
Went to K-mart after work, bought thermal underwear and thick black stockings for next to nothing. Much warmer now: lips back to pink! Problem=solved.
loading...
Love K-Mart, buy most of my little girls clothes there and also some of my boys. I think all stores need a better variety of boys clothes (I have a 1 year old). I also have bought three pairs of coloured jeans there and a lace dress. my latest pair which are a cool blue colour were only $15!
loading...
Kmart don’t even sell Bonds underwear anymore – that’s UnAustralian.
loading...
Un-Chinese is probably more appropriate. Bonds are only designed in Australia now, Bonds products are produced in China.
loading...
Yes, I was surprised they didnt stock bonds. We had to go to Lowes to buy my son some socks.
loading...
I only like KMart for toys and dvds type stuff. Everything else is their own cheapo brand that is rubbish.
loading...
No way! Their brand ‘Secret Love’ is amazing! I have stuff that lasts forever
loading...
I’m pretty sure when I move out K-Mart will be my first stop for all homewares etc!!
also my kmart volley’s knock offs are the best shoes I’ve ever bought. $6 and worn to every festival/concert for about 2 years. They’ve only just broken!
loading...
Binning clothing simply because they have stretched is also unethical and unsustainable.
Probably would have been better to donate them, if stretching was the only issue with them.
loading...
I regularly donate my old clothes, but only things that are in good condition. I don’t consider jeans that are extremely and visibly stretched out (they looked terrible) to be in even half decent condition.
I used to volunteer at an op-shop, and I know what’s worth donating and what just waste’s the sorter’s time. They would have ended up in the bin anyway.
loading...
Well my story goes like this… I hadn’t been to K-mart in aaaages because it is an out of the way suburb where I live. I never thought too much about the clothes etc, just another department store.
I also have this friend. She is blessed with stunning exterior beauty, and an eye for fashion trends, flaunting and creating. She is also one of the funniest, kindest girls I have met… I always figured her clothes were all designer brands and she is just always looking stunningly on-trend.
She told me one day she would be late to our coffee date as she “got distracted at Kmart..again.” I was intrigued… I wondered what she was buying there? I told her I could come and meet her at kmart if she liked, I had the spare time. So off I went.
When I found her in one of the isles, she exclaimed “thank god you’re here” and threw me a bunch of clothing she was having trouble carrying. I couldn’t believe she managed to find so many beautiful clothes at Kmart and pull them together into such wonderful, attractive outfits… Like sheer black singlets with coloured/printed leggings, long flowy, eye-catching necklaces, etc… trendy workout gear.. pretty, lacy, soft-touch undies…
Anyway, to get to the point, whilst I was there I discovered the toy sale was on… Cue me loading up my basket (which somehow transformed into a trolley) with wonderful kids toys, like disney princess dolls and figurines, stickers, staionary galore, good value books!!! Sooo much stuff to fill up her stocking this Christmas. The best part for me, is being organised and knowing I am not just buying junk or cheapo stuff, but good quality toys which are mostly educational. The wooden dolls house I put on laybuy is absolutely divine!!!
Life gets complicated around holiday seasons when you are a single mum, working part time and studying.. but this kmart adventure really impressed me
I wont mention the money I spent on myself too, the fashionable clothes, the pairs of shoes for soo cheap (that still look brand new a few months later), the cutlery, the pillows, the toaster, the DVD season sets…
So anyway, by the end of our “coffee” date, my girlfrined and I left happy and chuffed with ourselves, myself especially as I had spent about $300 in total, and managed to fill a trolley with homewares, clothes for kindergarten (ie cheap, comfy yet pretty shorts/tops/jackets), a bundle of toys, movies to entertain me for the rare quiet nights which don’t include essays.. what a wonderful experience.
Needless to say, I will definitely be back again soon, now that I know how affordable things are. Made my life alot easier, I must say.
I have also notcied some pretty neon sheer tops I must have overlooked last time.. Might just have to investigate this particular trend.. ahem
loading...
I bought a blue, grey and white zig-zaggy dress from Kmart a few months ago to wear to my sister’s birthday lunch. It was about $20. I was in the process of losing weight and didn’t want to spend a lot of money. When I arrived at the lunch I was amazed at all the comments I got. Everyone asked where I bought the dress from and I lied and told them it was from some Boutique on Oxford St….Lying doesn’t pay – a week later my very rich aunty text me a photo of herself in the same dress but the different coloured fabric with the comment “You little liar – not your best kept secret” I didn’t know whether to be annoyed that she had bought the same dress (a habit in my family) or humoured that even with all her millions she still shops at Kmart!.
loading...
Shopping in a mall on the weekend I was inspired to buy a pair of coloured jeans. I looked at plenty of shops and found them from $50 to $150 dollars and was not ready to part with that much for a one season trend. Next shop was Kmart where I brought a pair for $15!!!!! Bargain
loading...
I recently needed to make some outfits for a dress up at a work conference, Olympic theme, I bought these red shirts at Kmart and bought material to make the stars – $4 for ladies, $5.50 for mens – what a bargain!!
loading...
A number of people have mentioned cheap / sweatshop / exploited overseas labour as a reason for K-Mart’s low proces. This is possibly true, but I think that horse bolted a long time ago. Almost *nobody* produces locally these days: even if you check Country Road labels, they’re possibly produced under the same conditions, despite the difference in price.
loading...
Country Road is outrageously overpriced. Basic dress produced in China – $299. I must be paying for marketing. Kmart doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t unlike shops like CR.
loading...
Don’t break their bubble of self righteousness!
Practically ALL manufacturing (including clothes, homewares etc) is made in China or South America. If you dont like that, take a half pay cut.
Its all too expensive to pay Aussies to make that stuff…. Sad, very sad, but true.
loading...
Who cares if third world labour is being exploited? This stuff is sooooo cool!
Who cares if child labour produced these fab neon pants? I’m gonna buy my kids ten pairs!!!
Doesn’t matter if you need this stuff or not, just get out out there and consume like there’s no tomorrow, cos you can!
loading...
I found The Very Hungry Catterpillar puzzles for $0.75 each, down from $15, a yes it was at Kmart! I find myself spending way too much each time I go into Kmart now, there are way too many bargains!
loading...
How is it possible?
Um – I’m guessing low-cost overseas labour and incredibly tight margins so we can buy throwaway fashion.
Yay… I guess.
loading...
I don’t shop at KMart because, as others have noted, there is no way they can produce products that cheap without using sweatshops/extremely questionable labour practices.
Also, consumerism for the sake of consumerism (“oh my god, so cheap! I’ll buy two”) just makes me uncomfortable.
loading...
