While some (“none”) of us love the look of dark circles under our eyes, probably most of us don’t.
And despite employing the use of eye creams and massage techniques and forest gypsies, those purpley-blue circles remain there, making us look far more fatigued and ragged than we actually are, and fooling everyone into thinking we are twenty years older than our passport would suggest.
So… conceal them, you gorgeous dunce! And conceal them PROPERLY, using the magic step so many of us neglect… corrector.

Are there cheaper versions of these products (that do the same thing)??
loading...
Maybelline have a corrector/concealer that costs less than $20. It looks like a lipstick, and comes in both yellow (for the bluey circles) and green (for red circles). I found it at Coles! http://www.maybelline.com.au/products/10/face/concealer/cover-stick-corrector-concealer/yellow-corrects-dark-circles/8?shadeId=60&view=shades&position=500
I’ve used the yellow one before, and it’s too pale to wear on it’s own so I used concealer over it. The result is the same, it’s just not as creamy as the Napoleon Perdis one that Zoe used.

i have such bad black black black cirlces under my eyes
these make up products are now on my shopping list!
thanks Zoe

Thankyou so much Zoe! I have the napoleon trio but I never realised the palest colour was a corrector! I will now be putting that on underneath

Hi Zoe,
Love this post as i have always struggled with this and it is my pain point
Can you suggest any cheaper options for Napoleon Perdis Concealer.
Appreciate your assistance
loading...
Covergirl do a great under eye concealer in a little pot that Zoe got me into. You can buy it in supermarkets. Very reasonable.
loading...
Went out yesterday and bought the napoleon pro pallet – amazing! Used it last night and thought it was the bestest product I have ever used for my always way to dark under eye circles – as I clearly hadn’t spent enough money, I proceeded to read the rest of the posts on mm that you have been involved in and am totally ordering myself the Mia cleansing machine thingy. Heaps of people talk about you and kickbacks, I think it would be a crime for you NOT to get commission – you’re the best salesperson ever!

I just “heard” essie and tilly talking (below) about beauty boxes delivered for $15 a month…..I”m looking up essie’s suggested sites right away.
Do you think Ms Foster and Mamamia would be able to arrange a similar concept based on Zoe’s themes and recommendations????

Zoe, just wanted to let you know that you are fabulous and how your appeal is broad. I’m completely addicted to your video blogs and I will be 40 in July. I bought amazing face and a decent set of makeup brushes for my 14 year old daughter for Chrissy. We love you!
Best advice ever was on how to apply blush! It changed my life…
loading...
Thanks Perthite! How kind of you to say. I’m blush-ing… (Zzzing!)
loading...
Zoe, you’re fabulous – my comment is just about the lighting in your videos.
Could you face the light/window, instead of it being on your side and throwing shadows across your face? In this video, for example, it was difficult to see the difference between the done and not-done eye circles, and the actual colours of the layers of product.
Keep up the great work, thanking you!

I know they’re pretty rubbish, and I can’t pretend for one second to be pro… I’m a writer who has somehow found herself making videos! What a farce. BUT. I will try harder next week.

Hey Zoe, you have previously mentioned on other articles and in your book to use ASAP skincare to clear up blemished skin, which products do you personally recommend from their range and also are there any other (cheaper) brands that do the same job?
xx
loading...
Yes! Great question! Please reply Zoe:)
loading...
ASAP’s everyday exfoliator is excellent. I find their cleanser quite strong but it’s good also…

This is a great post! I have a terrible dark circles.
As a sidenote, most people already know but dark circles are also a common sign of allergies like dust mite allergy which I have. I am starting my immunotherapy next month so am hoping when my dust mite allergy switches off my eyes might improve a little. My youngest child is the only one of my 3 kids with dark circles and he is also the only one with a dust mite allergy.

Hi Zoe,
I don’t have blue/purple eye bags, but red ones. Will the yellow correctors fix this problem too or do I need to look for a different coloured one? Do they even exist? I heard once that green neutralises red
Ta!
loading...
Hi Lorren!
I have a fairly rosy complexion and find that mixing a bit of green corrector into my everyday foundation does the trick. I can’t remember the brand – I think it’s Christian Dior?? It’s a navy blue tube with a gold lid, anyway! The tube lasts forever; even if you’re using it everyday. Just don’t use too much – less is definitely more!
Hope that helps and best of luck experimenting!

HI Zoe, um an off topic Q , as I’m all about me …….. so I turned 40 two weeks ago, and I have been stumbling around skin care / routines for about um….40 years ! My gift to me was to get serious about my face, and yes you are totally to blame !!!!!
I received a copy of your book, Amazing Face, and well it was the kick in the pants I had been waiting for…..so here’s my Q…….
Could you please give me a run down on products, both lux and less that I should / could be using as a complete daily routine…..yes I am aware of page 5, 8 and page 18 and I am off…right now ….to get me some Rose Hip oil !!!
And as you have suggested to look for key words in products in the 40′s age range, I am green in this area of my face first, my child’s nutrition second ( I’m kidding punters …. am I ?? ) and so whilst I am totally all over this, it is reassuring to be recommended products that actually do something…… Got to say, I’m rather enamoured with Chanel products ( I love their Rouge Coco Shine Lippie ) , is it because the packaging resonates with my minimalist ( insert controlling OCD ) tendencies …???
Thanks Zoe….ps, I think Hamishs’ career will now finally take off with your wit and good humour for him to absorb…… mwah X
loading...
I have TERRIBLE dark circles so will definately be trying corrector. I use powder mineral foundation, so should I still be doing corrector/concealer after this, or switch up the order?
loading...
Sorry if this is a dumb question but touché éclat seems to come in several colours, is that right? How do you choose which colour?
loading...
I use 02 Blonde and I’m a red head with fair skin, here’s a link to the shade selector chart. Hope this helps!

Zoe: my lucky little parents are going on a nice long trip around the states in a few weeks (something about a 25th wedding anniversary, whatever)
im taking advantage of this to compile a list of a few make-up prods that mum can buy me over there for much cheaper. what are some things u can recommend i get, things i might not have been able to splurge on here in aus as a struggling uni student (you know when cut open the top of your foundation bottle and use a brush to dig around to get the little bit left on the sides? yeah. shame.)

MAC is much cheaper in the US. $14.50 instead of $36 for a lippie.
Nars is about the same price as Loreal and Revlon are over here. Nars blushes are fantastic.
Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Illamasqua, Benefit…basically anything you thought was too expensive in Australia will be much cheaper in the US.
If you have any favourite Maybelline, Revlon etc. products, try to stock up on them as well.
loading...
Um, pretty much everything is cheaper there. Make-up, clothes, Clarisonic, etc. So go wild

Don’t forget OPI nail polishes and Philosophy bubble bath!! Sephora is your best friend. Seriously – I’d just go to their website and put together a wishlist that you can print out for your Mum. Easy!
Happy window shopping!!

So, on a day where the camera will be out all day long (say, a wedding) – would we avoid the YSL illuminator? Or does this help brighten the eye? I’ll be avoiding my normal luminous foundation and cheekbone highlighter, but not sure about this one?!
loading...
Hey Zoe, loved this clip.
But really, that opening music is still just so cringe-worthy!!!!
It’s like watching the opening one of those videos in science class in high school. You know.. like how neutrons work.. with some overly positive host, bad animations and lots and lots of bad science puns…
loading...
Love all these videos – thanks so much Zoe – I learn a lot from them. Went out and got that Mac eyeliner brush last month.
loading...
Zoe, you are so pretty.
That is all.

OK so do we put the makeup primer under the corrector, or over the corrector, illuminator, concealer before applying foundation? Makeup application is becoming too complicated I’m sticking with how I’ve done it for the past 20 years but applying a primer over the top of moisturiser, then applying foundation, then concealer and blush. I don’t highlight or contour with bronzer everyday, it’s all too much for my skin.
loading...
Primer, foundation (not on under eye area), corrector, concealer.
loading...
And then illuminator if you use it, i forgot that one!
loading...
Hi Karen – primer ALWAYS first. Think of it as a bridge between skincare and makeup. Then foundation. Then correctors and concealers. Your way is right!
loading...
Why no engagement ring?
loading...
It’s being made right now. Soon, they tell me, sooooon….
loading...
Exciting!

God I wish I could carry Zoe around with me in my hand bag whilst at the shops… Or just throughout my life in general haha.
loading...
Zoe, do we need to set the concealer with powder? If so, is our regular face powder fine or do we need to use translucent powder?
loading...
Ummm… a fine, translucent powder would be better. Maybe less creasing that way.
loading...
Ah, so much to think about. Thanks for your response!
Is it a MUST to set the concealer with powder or would we be able to go without it? Would you please recommend a translucent powder?
loading...
Not Zoe, but Benefit Powderflage is great and made for this exact purpose.
loading...
I have found the maybelline correctors a great cheapie option, really makes a difference under my concealer!
loading...
Such fantastic & helpful tips, Zoe! A big thank you! This is a problem I’ve been wrestling with for years. Feel like I finally have a solution! Can’t wait to try out a corrector! Thank you also to everyone else who has posted comments- I found lots of your tips really helpful too! Happy correcting, concealing & illuminating everyone:)
loading...
Zoe – what is your relationship with the brands you refer to in your clips?
loading...
I don’t think that matters. I know you’re not asking me, but I’m sure while she gets free stuff, she wouldn’t suggest it if it didn’t work and she didn’t actually like and use it.
loading...
I think it’s a fair question. All the beauty blogs I follow tell readers when they’re reviewing a product that was given to them, if they receive revenue for recommending a brand or a website etc.
Honestly, sometimes Zoe recommends things that seem very popular with beauty editors but get dreadful reviews from people who don’t get freebies. It does make me wonder.
loading...
Agree! 90% of people hate Napoleon yet both Zoe & Mia love it, so its’ either promo or just genuine love for the product. I’d personally like to know.
loading...
Yeah, Napoleon especially. It’s always being talked up in magazines, but it’s absolute rubbish, and insanely over-priced.
loading...
Agree, it would be nice to know! I’ve never thought much of Napoleon either
loading...
I use Napoleon, love it and swear by it. I wouldn’t call it rubbish or insanely over-priced. Always seems to last for ages for me.
I think everything in makeup is subjective. As are the brands you use. Some people might like one thing, while someone else another.
loading...
this is the case for a lot of the beauty products and regimes promoted to us through magazines and marketing campaigns (basically the same thing).
i recently asked my dermatologist about moisturisers and he said i didnt need it on my face. ever. whcih shocked me because everything you read in beauty mags says everyone must moisturise every day but he said it is only about 20 percent of the population that actually need moisturisers on their face daily.
not a critiscm on zoe (who i adore btw!) just thought it was interesting how often the advice we recieve is just about selling more product than what we really need for our skin.
loading...
That’s so different to my dermo – my dermatologist told me that I definitely needed moisturiser, but because my skin was sooooo oily, I only needed a dermatologist’s brand called “Lubirderm” (which I managed to get two bottles of and can’t find it anywhere!)
loading...
Hi Monica, great question.
I am sent new cosmetics and hair/skin prodz to review and try, as all beauty writers are. This is our job! We act as a vessel between the companies and the public, sifting through and trying things so that we can cut through the noise and offer you a more simplified take on the trends and technology and prodz available.
I assure you I am not being paid by Napoleon or YSL (the brands used in the clip above) to write on their products. I have many concealers and many illuminators, and I get to choose, independently, which ones I write or talk about. I guess you kind of earn that right after years of testing products and writing about beauty and learning about what’s out there and speaking to makeup artists and so on. Women sort of defer to you because you’ve done the groundwork for them. I don’t take that responsibility lightly, which is why you’ll see me refer to the same ‘harem’ of prodz again and again – they’re good, they work, I recommend them. Sadly, there are shitty products out there, and I’d rather you not waste your money on them.
It’s extremely subjective, obviously: that palette and that illuminator are by no means new, but I keep coming back to them because they work, and that’s why I feel comfortable recommending them to you guys. BUT! They work for me, on my circles, on my skin type and my skin type – they might be horrible on others.
THIS is why I choose to talk about the application technique and the reasoning behind using A Corrector and An Illuminator, rather than warble on and on about how great a particular product is. I need to use something to show you rascals how to do the move, and so I go to my makeup bag, and I use what’s in there.
… By the way, have you tried Fringle’s Baked Tomato Soup? It’s really delicious, and 99% fat free!!!
loading...
Thanks for clarifying Zoe – great response and insights. We all love reading your tips and it’s great that you’re so open with us on these matters. Thanks!! Now…how can I shift my budget around a little to accommodate for the YSL illuminator…
loading...
Chemist Warehouse is now stocking Touche Eclat for less than half the normal price. I stocked up!
loading...
Awesome tip, thank you!
loading...
Thanks for responding Zoe and for your honesty.
loading...
THanks, Zoe! I always try to cover my horrible undereye bags with concealer and am disappointed when you can still see them, now I know what to do! BTW just finished your book, ‘Playing the Field’, couldn’t put it down!
loading...
Thanks Zoe. I love your videos and i love your book.
is it corrector and illuminator AFTER or BEFORE foundation? x
loading...
After!
loading...
I would indeed love some dark circles if i could exchange them for my serious eyebags i’ve been working up to since i was twenty or so…no concealer on earth will make them vanish, and my worst enemy is light coming from above…shocking!
loading...
Same here!
loading...
Thanks Zoe! I always try and use my concealer and then get frustrated when it doesn’t cover the circles. Will be trying this new technique.

This is probably the silliest question.. But do you put foundation on the eye area? I know you put foundation first then conceal, but do you use foundation and concealer on the eye area or just corrector and concealer?
This video is just what i needed. I don’t care too much about covering up my acne scars, i’ve had them for a while and have learnt to live with them, but i cannot stand the darkness under my eyes!
loading...
my lady from MAC said no, just concealer. Hope that helps!
loading...
I LOVE the Savoir-Faire corrector/concealer set that came in December’s BellaBox. The yellow is so creamy that it doesn’t drag and my Benefit Boing sits nicely on top. The issue is that I sometimes find they highlight little fine lines under my eyes, which I don’t usually see, being 23! Does anyone else find the same thing?
loading...
Oh Essie, what have you done to me? I just googled Bella box after seeing your comment. Oh dear….how can i not?
loading...
You should! The difficulty is stopping at one box! If I were you, I’d take a look at a few different box sites (glossy box, lust have it etc) and see which suits you best. It’s only $15 month, which I figure I’d easily spend on trying new stuff anyway!
loading...
Yes Essie I’m the same, my fine lines turn into craters!!
loading...
Hi Essie! I used to have that problem, but I started using an eye balm before I put my under eye concealer on and it made a BIG difference for me! I use clarins brand but you can get a few under-eye primers from other brands that I would imagine do a similar thing. Give it a go!
loading...
Hi Zoe. A little off the topic today but you quite often mention a bronzer called Smashbox. I got onto their website but they don’t ship to Australia. Couldn’t find an Aussie site that stocked it either. Do you know where I can purchase it?? Many thanks in advance
loading...
Hi Cindyloo,
Kit Cosmetics stock Smashbox. Shop til you drop x
http://www.kitcosmetics.com.au/products/smashbox/
loading...
Thank you SO much Ingy!! Will definitely be doing that!! x
loading...
http://www.kissandmakeupny.com/ stock Smashbox, and ship to Australia. Cheaper than Kit.
loading...
This site looks great! Has anyone used it before?
loading...
I use it all the time, I buy all my Nars products and now my Butter nail polishes from there. Haven’t had any problems so far.
loading...
I also use kissandmakeupny.com for all of my NARS make up. It is brilliant! NARS is much more expensive in Australia than in the US (around double), but on this site I get it at the US price and you only pay $10 for shipping!
They are really prompt with shipping and are very responsive if you have any queries. Have not had any dramas at all!
Good luckl
loading...
Hi Zoe,
I always enjoy your videos but I do have one complaint. Most of your tips are really only suitable for people under thirty five. I am thirty nine and sure with concealer or corrector you can conceal dark circles but the problem is unless you have quite oily skin it will really emphasize wrinkles. Touch eclat is, I think, the best available but even that has the same tendency no matter how carefully applied. Perhaps you could do a special post for people over 35.
Thanks anyway!
loading...
That would be fab! I know we sound OLD but we still care!
loading...
I agree, especially when you use a mineral powder. I find that a spray of (it’s in my bathroom and I’m too lazy to check) Avene fine water aerosol helps to settle that dry look which accentuates those fine lines.
loading...
I think Zoe’s tips can be applied to people both young and old. It’s all about finding the consistency/texture that suits your skin.
loading...
Wait… you’re over 35?? That is SO, GROSS. I am definitely not going to write makeup tips for you.
I’m KIDDING! I’m not far off 35 myself.
Now, of course I’d love to help: This tip certainly can work for skin that tends to crease, you just must be sure to use a lovely rich eye cream underneath the corrector, so that it’s plump to begin with. Also, there are lots of creamy concealers now that are hydrating and anti-ageing, (Lancome, Revlon) so maybe you switch to one of those – it will work nicely on top of the corrector.
Also: I get fine lines around the eyes and find a dab of facial oil (on top of all makeup) or even Paw Paw ointment gives it a quick glow and plump-up when it’s looking a bit stale later in the day.
loading...
thanx again Zoe for another wonderful post..i have learnt soo much from you so far and look forward to each post…at this rate the mamamia followers will have so much beauty info we will be able to give professional makeup artists a run for their money..lol..x

I have been using a corrector for a long time! I have bad dark circles and it helps SO much!

Which shade did Zoe use? The sound went off toward the end! Great clip though – thanks!
loading...
What’s the difference between these correctors and green and purple ones?
loading...
Green is for redness, so good for pimples, rosacea and other inflamations. Purple corrects yellow tones in the skin.
loading...
Are there cheaper correctors out there? I don’t really want to spend $50 on one.
loading...
Maybelline and Physicians Formula make a yellow corrector, but to get a good choice of shades you need to spend a bit more.
Bobbi Brown makes great correctors, and they’re much cheaper in the US. Strawberrynet sometimes has a good selection, otherwise there’s lot’s of US sites you can buy from and use parcel forwarding.
loading...
Thank you so much for this! Now I know just what to do.
I have a question on behalf of my step daughter though:
she’s half white and half maori. Which means she’s black, but light enough that you can see her dark circles. It drives her nuts, and we cannot figure out the right concealor (and now corrector!) Do you have any advice, please?
loading...
Try using a peach coloured concealer Like Bobbi Brown’s corrector in dark peach. The orangey tones are good for dark blue circles around your eyes or yellow concealer like Benefit’s Boing are good for those pesky purple circles.
Hope this helps!
loading...
Thanks so much! I’ll have to ask her later whether her circles are blue or purpley, she’s not here right now:)
loading...
I always have to wear concealer because my dark circles are genetic. Which means they will always be there but I can hide them as best as I can.
I always use my fingers to apply concealer unless I am using the Garnier roll on concealer. Eye cream underneath is a must too so I avoid creases:)
http://glossy-beauty.blogspot.com/
loading...
Oh would you mind telling me what eyecream you use? I get “crinkles” in my concealor too, and I wasn’t sure why – because I am only 22 and don’t really have wrinkles there…
loading...
Hi Monty,
I am 24 and I know where you’re coming from. I use a few different eyecreams (the joy of being a beauty junkie), but a nice one is Origins No Puffery Cooling Eye Mask which I keep in the fridge. It is meant to be a mask but there is no problem with leaving it on overnight or using it as a morning eyecream.
I have also been using Estee Lauder’s Time Zone which I didn’t buy but I received it in a gift with purchase bag from them. I do find that eyecreams are worth investing in because they do a very important job and they last a long time.
The budget eye cream I would recommend is Natio’s Delicate eyecream which costs $20. Nivea also has a Anti Ageing Q10 eye cream too for less than $20. If you are looking in a department store you should also ask for samples because you don’t want to pay money for a product you might react to.
Also make sure you only lightly dab concealer and not applying too much because that’s how crinkles can be made.
Good luck x
loading...
Thank you so much ingy. I think this info combined with using a corrector (which I never knew about until this video) should fix my problem. I was overusing concealor to compensate for no corrector. Lesson learnt
Xx
loading...
Aaah, CORRECTOR is what I’ve been missing! I use clarins beauty flash eye balm, and it doesn’t make circles less visible but oh my gosh my concealer sits like a dream! No cakeyness or going creasey from fine lines. Love it.
loading...
I have the NP thing but the shopgirl gave me a brush to apply it with so it always sat on my skin and looked really obv. Will try again with fingers so it melts in like ZopeyZo says. Yay.
Q: I use mineral powder as foundation. What comes first, under eye three step or foundation?
loading...
I discovered the Jane Iredale Under Eye Circle Delete no. 2 last year and it changed mine and my sisters lives! Our entire family have very deep set eyes which means we always look tired despite being very healthy. I follow this routine every morning and it’s amazing how something that is very peach coloured instantly counteracts with the dark purple circles around my entire eyes. I follow this with the lighter concealer that comes with the peach colour plus the upside down triangle of highlighter pen to achieve instant healthy looking wide awake eyes!
loading...
If anyone finds a cheap link to the two products that Zoe mentions in the video, could you please post it here for everyone. I had a look on Strawberry Net and couldn’t find the above products.
Cheers.
loading...
YSL shades 1 & 2 available here: http://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/searchresults.asp?searchsection=products&terms=ysl&stype=NP&expand=1
I don’t know of anywhere that sells cheap Napoleon, other than Ebay.
Might want to try both these products in person before buying though. It’s just as important to get a good colour match with under-eye products as it is with foundation.
loading...
http://www.activeskin.com.au has a sale on till Jan 30, the Napolean concealer is on sale for $44.
loading...
i have bought YSL touche Eclat from My Chemist for $25 before, but it’s only in 1 shade, fortunately it was mine!
loading...
Aldi does a semi-concealer/illuminator pen in their Special Buys every so often. It’s indistinguishable from Touche Eclat, right down to the clicky brush packaging. Performs beautifully and costs, from memory, about $6.
loading...
I’d love to be able to use concealer properly. I bought a double ended Physicians Formula one but no matter which end I use (one is pinkish, the other end yellow) people always tell me I look very tired when I’ve used it – which totally defeats the purpose.
I must say though Zoe, I wish my circles were as light as yours, mine look like someone has drawn under my eyes with charcoal.
loading...
Great video!
Sorry to be off topic- Zoe you mentioned in the comments a few videos ago that you may do a video for us curly haired girls and I would be eternally grateful if you did that, pretty please?
loading...
That would be fantastic, please do!!!
loading...
Did I say video? Or post? Let me see what I can do. My hair is a bit fried with all the bleach so the curls are being VERY naughty and un-vid-able…
loading...
I 3rd the post for curly hair!!
My hair seems to have it’s own personality – often in competition with my own!!
loading...
Hi Zoe, great clip I have bad undereye circles and nothing fixes it. I was just wondering, when I apply my bobbi brown corrector and concealer it always makes my eyes dry and they look a bit patchy. Anyway of stopping that? Also how do u find the right concealer colour for u?
loading...
Use a lovely rich eye cream before you even think about thinking about applying all of these correctors and concealers and illuminators.
loading...
I often find that the Bobbi Brown concealer and corrector leave me with creases throughout the day, I don’t apply too much so I don’t think it’s product build up. Leaves me looking wrinklier than my 26 yr old eyes really are! Any way to prevent this, Zoe or others? Or is this due to lack of eye cream as well?
xx
loading...
If you don’t already, try setting your corrector/concealer with Benefit Powderflage. It really helps.
But it also has a bit to do with the shape of your eye area, and there’s nothing you can do about that. I’ve just accepted that I have to do mini touch ups every few hours.
loading...
