Mia writes: Louise Bell is my design and interiors guru. Has been since we first started working together in magazines 15 years ago. We’ve both moved on now and Louise has her own online homewares store called Table Tonic and a matching blog which you should bookmark immediately.
A few weeks ago, she shared with us the before/after photos of her home renovation which are SO PERVY I can barely stand it. You agreed – it was a hugely popular post. We’re going to be publish some of her wisdom here on MM. Like this genius idea which you’ll want to steal as soon as possible, whether you have kids or not. Louise writes…..
It’s a well know fact that I love blogs like I love my own children. A lot. And I see and get a lot of ideas. The “Miscellaneous” folder on my desktop is always full to the brim with inspiration, potential blog posts, things that I’m “going to do“.
But seeing Ikea “Bekvam” spice racks ($2.49 each) as forward facing bookshelves in a kiddie’s room on Domestic Simplicity? That had me clearing my diary and driving to Ikea the following day. Oh, and I live over an hour from the nearest store. Got kids? Cash strapped? Listen up:
I had the perfect little wall in Anoushka’s room for them between the doorway and the cupboard (she inhales books!). Given the proportions of the wall, I went for a fetching side-by-side configuration (with a 10cm gap between them), in four “shelves”/rows, almost up to door height Who cares if a 3 year old can’t reach the top shelf? I can. And besides. Looks good.
You’ll need: The tools of the Bekvam-hanging trade, aka tape measure, level, offspring’s HB pencil. Note the caffeine – you’re going to need some form of artificial stimulant before you commence. Havaianas sold separately (actually, I bought them online here). Right. Lets party.
See? They work and everything. And admittedly, they do actually look quite good unpainted. But…
Enter Mr Tonic (husband), a can of undercoat and a Bosch spray gun*. Mr Tonic is literally walking around the house looking for something else to spray. That thing is the bomb! Consider them undercoated until further notice.
*Beyond this point, our renovation will be referred to as Pre-Bosch spray gun and Post-Bosch spray gun.
See! You, too can worship at the alter of budget-DIY-Bekvam-$2.49-heaven. What’s not to lust. Right? And the best bit? A 3 year old can put the books away ALL BY THEMSELVES. And did I mention they were the “Bekvam” Spice Rack? And that they’re $2.49 each from Ikea? I did? Oh.

Pingback: Ikea Bekvam Spice Racks Turned Bookshelves
We did this in my son’s room using leftover fence palings -

and again in my daughter’s room using yet more leftover palings (yes, Mr Fencer Man seriously misjudged the amount of timber he would need for the actual fence) and we covered hers with purdy fabric. They both have stacks of other books and we just rotate the flavours of the month on display.

Weird…seems like somebody already came up with this idea last year:

great idea regardless.

Um, that is the whole point of the post – that she saw it on Domestic Simplicity and was motivated to try it herself.

For the record, this would make a great submission for IKEA Hackers:

Looks like it’s already up there:

awesome idea, thanks

Fantastic, looks great and (tongue in cheek) you no doubt needed to save some $$ somewhere after spending close to $500 on the Moroccan Poofs… unless of course you got them in Morocco

*falls about laughing*
morrocan poofs!
Then the penny dropped

I love, love, love this idea. Am currently in the middle of major renos and my 14 month old already has more books than I can believe – what a great way to display them!
loading...
Do you need to find the wall studs when drilling these things in?
loading...
Mr Tonic is welcome to come to my place and spray my bedroom setting which I’d like painted white. Thanks
I totally love this idea. I’ll be stealing it.
loading...
Also did you buy the spray gun? I think we might need to invest in one of those (see previous comment).

Bugger just got back from IKEA – wish I had read this before I went!!! Great idea I am looking for a space to do this right now!!!

I absolutely, positively heart this idea to bits!!

I have done exactly the same thing in my little girls room! Great minds think alike.

These are a great idea, and remind me of the two shelves I have on my son’s wall – here’s a picture of one of them. My partner made these after I saw them on the Martha Stewart home site. They are converted dinner plate racks. Not as simple as the Ikea spice rack idea (you need someone with some basic carpentry skills) but they hold a lot more books. I still have bookshelves for the heavier books!

i LOVE this idea – (even though the post seems a little flawed with little instruction on how to do it plus they arnt painted at the end tho she is painting half way through?) – anyway great idea for displaying the books front facing. No way my daughters whole collection could fit on those but a good way to show some of the faves. Kids tend to read a LOT more if books are displayed this way so its great for that!

On a side note, Louise I love your nail polish and thongs!
loading...
And feet! Lovely feet!

too many steps missing….. and yes – paint them white ,,,, and end pic shows them unpainted.
And how can you attach them to the wall…..?
And how can your daughter reach the top ones ?
loading...
Louise says: They come with everything you need – 2 screws go in the wall & they have 2 (concealed) holes in the back.
loading...
A very clever idea for displaying books, but when they have 5 million books, you still need a regular bookshelf.
loading...
Soooooo clever!!! Looks amazing…and look at your little cherub reading up…So sweet!
Sar xx

Great idea but you failed to tell us how to actually attach them to the wall, a pretty important step I think you would agree.
You should have used a spirit level as the are not straight and how come the finished product is suddenly back to the raw co our when you are shown pairing them white in the step before??
Details mm team, details!!
loading...
Wow, tough crowd. I’d say you’d get instructions from Ikea on how to install them…
I think they’re fab.
loading...
If you look at the photo with the feet – apparently they did use a spirit level….

Truly, truly awesome!

I love this idea!!

Damn, I too saw this idea on a blog and totally ripped it off for one of my children’s rooms – I was hoping to keep it my little secret!
By the way, those spice racks costs $5.95 in WA…. still cheap, but not as cheap as Sydney obviously!
loading...
Genius indeed!
loading...
Louise I do adore your blog. But I’m laughing at the fact your child has $20 work of spice rack bookshelf but has $400 worth of Moroccan pouffe’s in her room!
loading...
That would be using the RRP on the Morrocan Poufs. Given that Louise sells them on her site I am guessing she doesn’t pay that price?? Jealllousssssss
loading...
I couldn’t help but notice that either. LOVE the poufs though, lucky little girl.
loading...
arh yes.. but I bet she didn’t get them that cheap unless Mr Tonic is a Moroccan like my DH… Moroccan Poof = BARGINNNNN!!!
loading...
Uh no Pixie. Commentary on the $120 cost price pouffes! It’s just bizarre!
loading...
Quick Lousie! Throw out the Pouffe’s and have your little one sit on a milk crate STAT! We don’t want high end designer pieces mixing with riff raff from Ikea.
loading...
These are so cool! How are they actually attached to the wall though!? That very important step seems to be missing?
loading...
Yeah that’s the hard bit!

Louise, I love this! These shelves are perfect for displaying the kids favourite books and as you said, they can put the books away themselves.
Now, can you solve this problem for me? I need some small shelving to put Miss8 and Mr6′s Lego creations on to keep them out of reach of Mr2. The Lego creations are mostly cars and trucks, but there are also 3 Lego houses (2-storey McMansion-types). I have had them sitting on a bookshelf, but now Mr2 has worked out how to climb the bookshelf (thank goodness it’s bolted to the wall!). Any ideas?
loading...
You and I have *exactly* the same problem, except it’s my 4 year old who is after the Lego!
The only solution I’ve come up with so far is to tell the big kids that “Lego isn’t craft” and is therefore fair game at the end of playtime. It hasn’t gone down well with them, but I’m soooooo over trying to keep precious Lego creations away from the mini-recycler!
loading...
I work at an after school care where this is a biiiig problem. We got a digital camera and a digital photo frame and take photos of the creations and leave the photo frame on when lego men are around and they love waiting to see when the pic of them holding the creation will come up!
loading...
Ahhhhh…. great idea! I’ll go get a special Lego photo frame asap! Ta
loading...
I like your “isn’t craft” idea.
My standard line is that “the great thing about lego is that you can build it again”. I bring this one out after giving them the spiel about how they can expect their little sister to get involved, and I don’t want to hear any whinging about her breaking things. I do this EVERY time the lego comes out!
