The Find: 9 last minute Father’s Day gift ideas.

By NICKY CHAMP

Men are the worst to buy presents for, there I said it.

There’s no other time of year this is more obvious than Father’s Day. Typical gift guides offer no help, especially if your dad doesn’t drink scotch, appreciate novelty socks or want a mini golf/pool set for his desk. And who has the kind of budget that stretches to a mountain bike for a manufactured gifting occasion?

If you’re well into adulthood you’ve probably reached a point where you’ve covered every single type of gift you can think of, and there are only so many times you can buy him a tie, or socks, or undies.

Even IF your dad insists that he doesn’t want anything this year, one sibling is going to crack and then you’ll be the only child who didn’t buy a gift this year. Read on for nine last minute (and inexpensive) gift ideas for all kinds of dads. If you have any other helpful suggestions add them in the comments below.

If he likes films…. a movie voucher from $19.50.

As you get older you appreciate experiences much more than material gifts, but dinners out or a night at the theatre can easily hit the $200 mark. A much cheaper option is a movie ticket voucher. Prices start from $19.50 or you can splurge on a Gold Class voucher.

If he’s an action man / into camping… beanie with a light $24.98.

Bunnings is to men what a walk in wardrobe is to women, absolute heaven. If your dad fancies himself an action man, is into camping or would find himself in a situation that would require an illuminated hat, then you’ve found your perfect gift.

If he’s bookish…. Kindle $99.

So this is a good one if you have two or three siblings willing to put in together for one large gift. I’d suggest you play an elimination round of rock, paper, scissors to determine who’s going to teach dad how to download books.

Dick Smith sells them here.

If he’s 55 going on 15… casual sneakers from $14.

The Iconic’s 3hr delivery has saved me many times, this year they have a huge range of men’s casual sneakers from only $14. I like this grey pair from JJ Brooklyn ($69.95), and Toms (stocked in Hype DC nationally or you can do a rush order online here) also do a great range for slightly older fashion-forward dads.

If he likes wine… WINE a gift pack from $20.

Again, this is one to split with siblings if you’re going to go for a large delivery. Check your local bottle shop for single bottle offers or Vintage Cellars are doing a Father’s Day gift pack including two Riedel wine glasses and a James Halliday’s 2015 Australian Wine Companion for $139. And honestly, who doesn’t like receiving wine?

If he’s a gesture kind of Dad… a card from $4.95.

A card with a beautiful message is never going to go unappreciated. I love this wooden photo frame card from Typo.

If he’s possibly going deaf… noise cancelling earphones.

Does your dad watch the TV at 1000 decibels and drive everyone else crazy? Pick him up a pair of noise cancelling earphones, JB HiFi have a Sony pair for $99, but also check out Kmart, Target and Big W for cheaper versions.

If he’s a new dad…. baby onesie or tee from $14.95.

So this is adorable, no other explanation required!

If he has a sweet tooth… Darrell Lea.

I can’t tell you how many friends and family of mine have saved me from a gift buying pickle. Countless friends and extended family have received their licorice and nougat puddings come Christmas time. This year they’re doing a Dad’s Bag containing eight different types of chocolate, licorice, peanut brittle and a cooler bag. Also? You can now buy Darrell Lea at Coles, Woolworths, Spar, IGA, Australia Post and some chemists.

Check out their Dad’s Bag here.

Do you buy a gift for your dad for Father’s Day? If so, what are you buying this year?
