Meet the Ghosts of Red Carpets Past.
Celebrities are always sauntering down red carpets looking stunning, in designer clothes and faces full of expertly-applied make-up.
However, the 1980s and ’90s were a simpler time, a time when personal stylists weren’t de rigeur and a can of hairspray could turn your hair from boring to bouffant with a few flicks of a teasing comb.
Then of course, there’s the early 2000s, when the height of fashion was low slung jeans and platform thongs.
We’ve dredged back through the records to find some very stylish Hollywood types’ first appearance on the red carpet, in all their cringeworthy glory.
Some of them are obvious, but some are barely recognisable. See if you can pick ’em.
Which transformation surprised you the most?

iI don't think theres anything wrong with those "before" photos, in my opinion they mostly look like photos of kids dressing like kids!
I'm a bit fed up with this idea that stylists are God. They are just human beings that think a person should dress in a particular way, just like everyone else in the world they have an opinion on the way they think someone should dress to look good. So if a celebrity thinks I want to wear yellow because I think that's what I look good in, that's an opinion, if stylist thinks no she should wear green that's an opinion, if I flicking through a magazine think she should have worn blue that would have suited her better, that's an opinion. The celeb's opinion, the stylist's opinion and my opinion are all just opinions, none are more valid than each other. Therefore why is a stylist considered to have a better opinion than the rest of us? Have they been wearing clothes longer than the rest of us? Is this where there expertise comes from. Oh that's right they possibly studied fashion, as if the rest of us aren't doing that in the real world when we walk down the street and think gee I like the way that women matches her earrings with her skirt etc.
considering that at least half the oscar attended can heavily criticised these days for their dress , and I'm assuming many of them have stlyists, then obviously their stylists aren't infallible or it is just a case of everyone has different taste.
Also the photos you have are mostly from a different era when someone thought those clothes are in, when quite possibly some stylist was saying to SJP, darling don't worry a top just wear a bra, that's so in, that's what they are doing on the Paris runways, you will be so fashion forward! Also some of these outfits are obviously specifically meant to shock.
Also fashion in itself is hideous, style is not. And the evidence for that is why do we all look back on the past and laugh at the ridiculous things people wear? That is because of fashion, because if something really was good taste then surely it is timeless? For instance I can watch movies from the 40s where women wore those little suits and they look great that is timeless style. Fashion is quite frankly for people with bad taste, that is why it dates so quickly and looks so hideous a decade later. One of the reasons is that fashion designers are always trying to come up with something different so that people will buy their clothes but the problem is most stylish cuts have already been invented so they have to come up with ridiculous clothes. I'm really over fashion I wish we could celebrate style instead
