Do You Like This Story?

The weather is getting colder and I’ve found myself drawn back to black. This does not make me hugely happy because I am usually a riot of colour. I prefer it. Especially when the weather is warm. It makes me happy. And there are other good reasons for not wearing black it would seem. I learnt this today on my friend Vanessa Raphaelly’s blog and thought I should share it with you immediately.

Vanessa writes…

blackclothes 300x199 Do you wear black because you think it’s flattering? WRONG.

Front row. Fade to black.

According to “colour consultants” (and the Daily Mail) “Black clothing can highlight dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes and wrinkles on the face it can even make those who wear it appear to have dark ’spokes’, or fissures, in the iris. While black does give the appearance of a slimmer figure by making the shadows from less visible, wearing it next to the face brings out the worst, explained colourist Jules Standish.

Wrinkles and sunken areas appear deeper and more pronounced, meaning the effect is more prominent in older women.”

Just one in five of us apparently have the correct skin tone to wear black well.

Well there you are then. Notwithstanding the fact that I, for one, am not sure why “colourist” Jules Standish’s opinion should be accepted as gospel, I do see some divine irony in this news. Black has long been the uniform of fashion editors, stylists and designers. In fact, at the recent shows, Erin Wilson for The New York Times reported: “At the Calvin Klein show, 31 guests sat on one side of the runway. All but three of them were wearing black.

black Do you wear black because you think it’s flattering? WRONG.

André Leon Talley, the Vogue editor at large, wore a black turtleneck, a black suit and a black knit cap with Obama spelled out in rhinestones. Anna Wintour, looked slightly more cheerful in an all-fur ensemble of gray and brown. But even Roberta Myers, the sunny editor of outperforming Elle, seemed to be dressed more for a bank heist; and Glenda Bailey, her counterpart at Harper’s Bazaar, was wearing long black evening gloves — at 10 a.m.

Black just fits the mood, like fashion’s version of comfort food. The headline on the cover of Women’s Wear Daily on Wednesday, referring to Ms. Karan’s collection, was “Black Watch.”

“Black is very versatile,” said Klein’s designer, Mr. Costa, who opened his show with nearly a dozen all-black looks ”

So what’s the verdict on black? Versatile? “Comfort fashion?” Flattering, or not?

Does the The Daily Mail know something the experts do not? Could it be that what I’ve long believed is true?

That many fashion editors and designers are absolutely bonkers and not aware of what actually suits women?

I leave you with this image, from the Fall Calvin Klein show and let you decide….

These days, I only wear black when I want to disappear…
What about you?

Wearing black detracts from the healthy-looking golden hue by ‘flattening’ it and bringing out tired-looking darker patches on the face. The one in five who do suit black close to their faces have ‘winter’ complexions consisting of pale, cool and dramatic colouring.”

Oh look. It’s a black sack. In summer, I wear NO BLACK AT ALL. I quite got into black last winter but if I’m not wearing colour in summer I feel many shades of wrong. I’ve always loved colour. Even when I worked near the fashion world. Are you a black person when it comes to fashion? Is it your default or do you find it depressing? Aging?

I wear lots of black, but I also have colours – they are generally dark unless I lash out and wear fuschia occasionally. I think I like the jewel colours (was that the term?) that a couple of people said below. My favourite is purple – I gravitate towards anything purple at the shops! But I also have maroon, turquoise or teal, navy. I don’t have to get dressed up for work though – I wear my chef checks and a black tshirt for that, and wear whatever to and from work. I couldn’t wear any of my preferred colours with white though, so dark colours it is!

I wonder what my proper colours are? I am natural blonde/going to light brown, blue eyes but I tan…

You know Kris, I’ve never had my ‘colours’ done..all I’ve done is looked in the mirror and seen with my own eyes what colours do it for me. Like yellow makes me look jaundiced, and I most definitely can’t wear ANY shade of red..EVER. I wear black really well, yet Navy doesn’t sit right with me. I rock the colour Purple, AND it’s my favourite colour (female empowerment, sexual repression…SO me! :-) ) I’m blonde, with green eyes and I tan..I haven’t a clue what ‘season’ I am but it WOULD be interesting to find out! Oh and I simply WON’T wear white…AT ALL! I’ve had enough white to last me a lifetime thank you ver much! :-)

Try wearing diff colours and look in the mirror. The right shade will draw attention to your face, make you look brighter, less tired. When people compliment your outfit, take notice of the colour you’re wearing. After a while see if a particular colour keeps popping up. Conversely, if people ask you what’s wrong, or say you look tired when you aren’t, the colour you are wearing might be the culprit!

This website gives you a quiz to help you find your colour season:
      http://www.colormebeautiful.com/seasons/index.html
This website (scroll past the first paragraph to the colour palettes) gives you an idea of season colours:
      http://www.beauty-and-the-bath.com/Season-Color-Analysis.html

Often people can be a blend of seasons, and once you have an idea of your season you can google it and find out other stuff.

I watch people get off the train in the Sydney CBD each morning and pour down the stairs at Wynyard in one writhing mass of BLACK, BLACK AND MORE BLACK! It looks awful when you see it like that.

I rarely wear black head to toe as separates because I have a real thing about when the shades of black don’t match. Does anyone know what I mean?

Black seems to look OK on me but I always like to mix it with colour (apart from those that make you look like a liquorice allsort)to break up the severity and highlight the colour. I currently love black based florals, with black tights and boots and a cardi (coloured or black but not too sombre).

And I have recently decided that just about every outfit in the world looks better with a decent pair of black boots and tights!

    • Kris2040

Yep, hear you on the blacks not matching. I have strict rules about that. The only time I don’t mind is if its, say, a band tshirt that has faded because I have worn and washed it so much. My 7 year old Foo Fighters tshirt and my 18 year old Violent Femmes (with NIRVANA!) are examples of this. But I generally wouldn’t wear them with something truly black anyway. When I worked in an office though, or going out? Oh, the black nazi steps right up!
I agree with you too, black boots and tights make pretty much everything look better. I have a purple short sleeve summery shirt dress that I can wear sandals with on its own, or throw a black jacket, tights and my black knee boots on and its just as good. :)

Love, love, love colour but am having a hard time finding the right shades at the moment. But oh when I do it puts a zip in my step and a bit of happy in my day!
There is a fair bit of black in my wardrobe but a coloured accessory is my best friend when I am draped in dark.

I tend to wear more black at work (I think it looks professional) than I do on the weekends. I did go through a phase where I owned multiple black dresses – every time a new event was coming up I’d buy another one (this was around the time of uni balls and 21sts). Now I’m in the middle of “wedding/engagement season” so I try to avoid wearing black as I think colours look much more festive and happy.

But I do agree with all the comments about us Melbournians wearing black. Today is the first really cold day of the year and I wore black ankle boots, thick black trousers and a black long-sleeve skivvy (I did have a black and grey man-style cardi on too but I got hot in the office so I took it off). So I was basically black from my neck to my toes!

(P.S I’m now going to google this colour season business to make sure that I am the right season to keep wearing black – otherwise 75% of my work clothes will have to be replaced!)

I’ve cut back on the black in my wardrobe, I’ve replaced a lot of the black staples with dark gray – much more flattering but still looks polished.

I really only wear colours in dresses, because you can wear them as one piece, and I think the only rule with black is, when wearing it, take care with your make up.

I noticed only very recently that I wear a lot of black. I have started a new job and I am wondering what everyone thinks of me as all I wear is black, grey and I have 1 white shirt!

I think it is because I have put on a lot of weight and I feel less noticeable in black….and probably the ‘black is slimming’ idea too…

once I hit 40 I realised how old all that black was making me & started turning to grey & beige much more, its much softer on my sallow complexion. I was on style.com recently & went quite hysterical fors next winters collections for Chole & Celine & they are full on beautiful camels, caramels, taupes & grey, I dont remember seeing any black & it all looked so warm, elegant & so so so chic!!

I agree quatro mamma, now I’ve hit 40 I won’t wear all black without breaking it up with some colour, sparkle or lots of bare skin. I find myself wearing nude colour shoes or tan boots for the same reason – I don’t want to feel like an old Greek widow in head-to-toe black.

I love ivory and cream and caramels as I get older – they look expensive! But I tread a very fine line – because many of those chic beige shades which look so good on blondes make me look ill.

I have been trying to break away from black – I used to wear it to blend in with the crowd but when I was looking for something to wear to a function in Darwin I realised blending in with the crowd meant NOT wearing black. Unfortunately I have noticed a significant amount of pink creeping in to my wardrobe, I blame the 7 year old daughter who “helps” me shop.

I went to London last year and several people commented that I must be Australian, just because of all the colour I would wear. I used to wear a lot of black. When I had my colours done I discovered that I am a “Summer” and should not wear black. I am fair with blonde hair and green eyes.

I now try to buy navy, charcoal or chocolate brown instead of black. It makes clothes shopping a lot more challenging as there are usually racks of black clothes in every size in all the shops.

I also discovered that I should be wearing white gold instead of yellow gold jewelery and I changed a lot of my makeup to cooler tones.

Reading through the comments I have realised:

    A) I NEVER wear colour

    and

    B) i have NO idea what “season” my colouring would relate to. Maybe that is why I don’t wear colour…

I tried googling but couldn’t fit myself into any of the categories. I have blue eyes and very dark hair (with warm tones) and olive skin tone. Can anyone help me??

    GD Star Rating

    • Em

clarirerose I don’t fit into any of the ‘seasons’ that I’ve read about. I can wear dark muted colours as well as pastels, brights and jewel tones as long as they are the right kind of tone – which I’ve figured out over the years through trial and error.

When you’re not sure about a colour just hold it right up under your chin – compare and contrast lots of colours before you buy. The right colours will make you look healthy and rested. The wrong colours will leave you feeling washed out – like you need to wear more lipstick or blush.

When you receive a compliment take notice of the colour you are wearing. Over time it will be pretty obvious which colours suit you – but you still need to be quite specific because if you look great in a particular shade of green that doesn’t necessarily mean all shades of green will look great on you.

Sounds like you might be a “dark” summer or a winter Clairerose. If you’re a dark summer, a lot of the jewel tones of the winter season will suit you, and the deeper tones of the summer season (this is what I am too). Pastels will wash you out.
Try putting stark black or white around your face, if you look washed out, then you are probably a dark summer. If your face doesn’t look washed out, then you may be a winter.
What Em says is spot on too. :-)

I just got my hair coloured today for the first time in about 5 years and it is darker than I normally go. not sure if I am ageing myself prematurely? I just love black.

Black, white, red, navy, blue and bone are my favourite colours to wear. I like stripes and block colours.

I am from Melbourne, I must wear black. I <3 it. Matches with everything. I didn't do it deliberately, but looked in my wardrobe one day & noticed 1/2 my clothes were black. I don't usually do head-to-toe, but always one black item. Then you can go with a funky scarf or earrings or something. (that said, almost all my jewellery is black too!)

Not sure if I love Melbourne because I love black or if it is the other way around… Today’s wardrobe includes a long sleeve black tee with a dark denim pair of wide leg pants – with red resin bangle (new addiction) and new birks with leopard print and roses! As I’m getting older I’ve become a little more adventurous and will wear colours and patterns – as long as there is some degree of black involved. Or dark denim. Only exception to this is a couple of 50′s style frocks that are very colourful!

But also I’ve gone back to work in that time and tend to wear black or grey trousers but coloured tops. My casual wardrobe has a few black tops but I will now be looking a little bit closer to see if that’s a good idea. The only thing my wardrobe always has is denim. I wore black everyday in my 20s. In my 30′s I discovered my love of colour – and now that I’m 40 I find myself being drawn back to darker colours because it seems an easier (lazier) way to look a bit more pulled together and polished.

As I get older I’m preferring dark bitter chocolate and even very dark navy which used to be my two most hated colours when I was a kid. Now they feel more youthful and flattering.

I try to mix it up with metallics or champagne, bronze colours. Any kind of blue or jewel green looks good on me and every time I wear any shade of red or berry I get compliments.

Whilst I’m mesmerized by the glam look of Kim Kardashian – my style is understated like Jennifer Anniston’s. Funnily enough when I studied both their pics in Mia’s Frockwatch – what stood out to me is that they too wear very limited colour – mostly white, nude, grey and black – with denim and the occasional pinkish/red piece. I remember looking up the tube station and there would be hundreds of people waiting, and maybe one person would be wearing colour.
It just fits in winter. And it’s easy. I do have some variations-a red and white striped top, navy and navy and white stripes, cream, some beautiful coloured scarves from Egypt and Turkey, but it all works in with balck.

I don’t suit black. it makes me look harsh. Navy and charcoal, on the other hand, look fabulous. I will wear black — pants, shoes, belts, skirts .. but next to my face I’ll only wear it mixed with a bright colour. i’m a colour girl, on the rare occasion when I wear all neutrals, even “my” neutrals, i feel like I’m dressed for a funeral. I don’t feel pretty in black, because I know it doesn’t suit me. I wear purple as a neutral — it’s my favourite colour!

I always seem to be dressed so colourfully, yet there is so much black in my wardrobe. (I just checked)
I have a group of friends who all seem to only have one colour in their wardrobe; you guessed it…black! So when I am out with them, I must look so out of place.
Anyways, I think my point is that for me, fashion IS black and white!, Seriously the number of black & white items I own…crazy. At least 2 dresses, a cardigan, a skirt, a few tops, belt, a scarf plus a black & white beanie.
I make no claims about being a fashionable person, but it is so easy to mix black up, add colourful scarves, beanies, shoes even lipstick.
Summer, there are so many beautiful colourful dresses, how can you wear too much black then?
Having said all of that, I think being a redhead automatically counts as having colour in my outfit, so when I find myself top to toe in black I just let my hair out, instant colour!

I don’t have any/much style, so I always fall back on black. It makes me feel as though I look more sophisticated than I am.

I’m hoping I fit into the ‘black’ skin tone category. Do you think natural blond and blue eyes and fairish skin makes me ‘cool’ ? I don’t have dramatic colouring though. Perhaps it means red hair? I really have no idea. I’d better leave this post. I don’t belong…feeling intimidated by the topic now…..Going to go and throw on my new purple ‘Mother’s Day’ugg boots…..say no more…

Ruby, don’t go! AS for the ‘not much syle’ comment, well, style can be learnt. Seriously.

Two things are important when working out what clothes suit you. 1. Your body shape. 2. Your colouring.

As a rule, black will wash you out if you have blonde hair and pale coloured eyes. Dramatic colouring tends to mean red hair, or a slah of red lipstick, something like that.

On the other hand, purple – ugg boots or otherwise – would probably look fab on you. Please experiment with colour. If you find something really flattering to your body shape try it on in every colour to see which suits you best. It could surprise you which colour works best.

Thanks for the feedback La Petite Chou! Greatly appreiate it. I’m pretty sure I know what suits my body shape, but I know for a fact I’m a chicken when it comes to colours and patterns. You will find NO patterns in my wardrobe. All block dark colours or black. And I don’t live in Melboourne! I’m north of Sydney!I shall heed your advise and give it a go…

Oooooh I love Black with a Passion !!

Black, Grey, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Medium Grey & Denim! All year round …

I throw in a statement print every now and then and it’s usually Leopard Print or a Tribal / Animal kind of print … soooo predictable – so easy to work with – everything matches!

I totally agree with this article.

I hate wearing black, it washes me out, it makes me feel depressed, it highlights the circles under my eyes. I have never looked good in any kind of little black dress.

Black on the bottom I can wear, as long as I have colour up top. I found the “Colour me beautiful” book and the general trend of finding out your “season” colour wise worked well for me. It confirmed what I already thought- pastels and black and white wash me out, jewel tones and nearly any shade of blue suit me.

It’s amazing how much colour brightens your appearance when you choose the right one….

Absolutely, good to keep black away from your face if you can. Colour totally brightens. Trinny and Susannah have interesting discussions on colour — it’s all in the shade — I imagine something like the “Colour me beautiful” idea.

Yep I’m a “dark” summer, almost a winter. So I wear half of winter’s palette (jewel tones, but not stark black and white) and half of summer’s palette (but not the pastel colours).
        I love colour!

Today I’m wearing a black turtle neck top with black opaques and a brown Cue shift dress. I find that I only wear black during winter and the only way I realised that is the last 2 weeks of washing have consisted of 2 loads of blacks, 1 of colour & barely enough whites to make a load! In the warmer nights it’s quite even. It’s not even a conscious decision to wear black when it’s cooler, somehow it’s just worked it’s way into my wardrobe. I would love to find some great coloured pieces for winter – especially to wear to work!

I live in Melbourne. Home of black. It’s the law. My drawers & cupboards are full of it. My hubby gets perplexed when I say have you seen my black top? NOOOOO not THAT one. It also makes getting dressed in a hurry easier. I have a few grey tops… and some green, and this year I bravely bought a red cardigan!
I have (cringe) been to a colour consultant and told I do have the complexion for black, pale, greenish eyes, but find that as I get older, it’s harder to wear all the time.
I am also short, so 1 colour head to toe is better, mind you I have some denim skirts & jeans… but they are dark denim.
I have even started wearing summer clothes in black. But more colour does appear in the warmer months. I also add colour with scarves in winter.

Ah thank goodness I have “winter’ complexions consisting of pale, cool and dramatic colouring” because most of my wardrobe is black! In winter I wear grey and black (I live in Melbourne) and in summer I wear light neutrals. I have a couple of colourful things but I feel the need to fake tan if I wear them. I also dont wear black close to the face, scarves must be in softer colours and seeing as I am not a primary school child, a wiggle or 100 years old I dont wear turtle necks…

I wear black because I live in Melbourne, and it’s the law. Along with ‘you must drink coffee’ and ‘you must have a footy team’.

However, I generally don’t wear head-to-toe black. If I have a black top, then the pants are at most dark grey or a black/white fleck type of thing.

As a Sydney city worker, I find it amusing (and sad) in winter that you look out into the crowd of people working to their office buildings in the morning and 95% of them are wearing black coats and black pants/skirts. I am also guilty of doing this with my two black coats but I’ll mix it up occasionally with a bright red coat or a pink jumper. Guess sometimes wearing black is just easier cause it means that you’re part of the crowd!

I find it annoying that I look exactly the same every day in winter. This is because my winter coat is black, and I can’t afford to buy several winter coats. I picked black because I suit it and it goes with everything, but i admit it is a little boring. So even if I do wear something colourful in winter… I put on my coat and no one knows!

I own a lot of black clothing, and Mia what timing, I was just thinking about this the other day when I swapped my summer wardrobe to winter. I don’t actually like wearing black! So it is my goal for this winter to get as many colours as I can into my wardrobe.

I have very distinctive (bottle) red hair and I work that well, so I find black doesn’t wash me out as it could, but it’s just so booooooooooooorrrrring.

Bring on the colours I say!

(And, my tummy rolls will be there whether I wear black or colours, so who cares! – Also, then I don’t look like an emo, another win…)

I agree, black is very boring. I once read a study that said men find women who wear colour more attractive than women who wear black. So I asked my husband and all my male friends & colleagues if they agreed and they absolutely said black clothing is not particularly attractive. They said their wives, girlfriends and women in general looked particularly beautiful when they wore colour.

I live in black at the gym. If it wasn’t for black supplex, I’m not sure I’d even want to go to the gym! LOL! I don’t mind the odd stripe, logo, or hint of colour but when it comes to working out black is best for me… Working out in black makes me happy and I’ve tried the rainbow of coloured gym gear but if I don’t have something black on at the gym, it just feels wrong… Kinda like I went to an aerobics class without my joggers!
