Do you use facial pads?
You might like to, because they’re terrific. And after a friend spotted some on my bathroom sink yesterday and was amazed by their niftiness, I thought, goodness, perhaps this is the Veep (TV show that is excellent and you should find and watch) of skin care products, AKA something incredibly good and wonderful but not nearly as popular as it should be.
They’re fantastic, facial pads. Just small circles of cotton soaked in skin care ingredients that will exfoliate and gently resurface your face. They’re disposable one-use little marvels that come in a jar with 60 or so of their friends, and are hygienic and fresh and ready to use with the perfect dose of ingredients, so you don’t have to guess/can’t overdo it. (Important when dealing with AHAs and even salicylic acid, which these pads all contain.)
They’re very quick and easy to use, negate the need for specialised toners and masks, and can be used for:
- Skin that is dull or dry or tired and needing a boost/some glow
- Blemished skins and breakouts
- Blackheads
- Softening lines and brightening up the skin
And for the time poor, or the I-do-not-care-for-complicated-skin-care-routines-and-numerous-products, or the travelly, or the lazy, or the can’t-afford-regular-facials-but-want-great-skin, or the I-enjoy-wild-weekends-and-pay-for-it-with-my-skin types, these are potentially your new bezzie. You can use (some of) them daily if your skin needs it/can take it, weekly, or just when you need some glow. They are pretty active, though, so sadly (generally) sensitive skinned types won’t be able to enjoy their effects.
You simply cleanse, then swipe one little pad all over your face, nice and thoroughly, (really giving the blackhead zone a good rub), let it dry for a minute or two, then follow with either your serum then night cream, or just your night cream. I recommend saving them for night-time due to the AHAs, which as we know, make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
For glow before an event, I would use: (any of these, really but certainly) Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Peel pads (a cult, celeb-loved fave) or Philosophy the microdelivery: pads which with its AHAs will give me a lovely exfoliation. I then follow with a hydrating facemask for 5-10 mins.
For mature skin, or weary, unloved skin that needs TLC, I would use: Something a bit stronger, that that will act like a diluted (salon) peel. The Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel is a two-step pad system that used as a course over a few weeks will do big things. (Not recommended for sensitive skins, though.)
For acne management or break out I would use: (any of the above but certainly) Glo therapeutics Clear Complexion Pads or Body Shop Tea Tree Exfoliating pads (also excellent for ingrown hairs around the bikini line) or Clearasil Rapid Action Pads.
A few things about these pads:
1. Follow the instructions. They know what their product can do if overused, you don’t. These pads are strong.
2. Use sunscreen if you are using these pads.
3. Follow with moisturiser and or a mask. You need to replenish the skin.
4. ALWAYS SCREW THE LID BACK ON TIGHT. Otherwise they will dry out and become useless and you will grieve for Grug knows how long.
5. Don’t brag too much once your skin is all awesome. Deeply unstylish.

Zoe, Zoe, Zoe!
I’m looking at hair removal options for those places I’m just too damn sick of waxing. But when I started looking at laser options I’ve gotten all sorts of confusing responses. What’s the best permanent hair removal option? x

Zoe can you do personal recommendations? I’ll pay of course. BeBe great to get a skin and make up consultation from you.

Snuck into Mecca over lunch today and got the Dr. Dennis Gross ones! Just used them and followed up with some equally expensive Mecca sanctioned serum that smells of roses and sunshine.
I am excited to see how this all unfolds. Flawless skin, be mine! Thanks Zoe!

Can I use one of these instead of exfoliating every second day? If so, which ones – I’m 39 with quite sensitive skin (I go red when I apply some products) but otherwise normal skin.
I hate exfoliating, it makes my hair gritty.

Perhaps I am just not getting this, but I have used Garnier Pure Cleansing Pads in the past (blueish tub)- are they the same kind of thing?
I thought they were just for cleansing/wiping away oil?

Hi Zoe, I’ve become a slave to your advice! Are these pads suitable for dry / dehydrated skin? Or really just best for skin prone to breakouts?

Ah Zoe! I love reading your articles. Being of the sensitive skin variety (I mean very sensitive) I can’t use many or your tips, and certainly not these facial pad thingies but man I love your articles. You must be the funniest writer out there.
That is all.

A big congratulations on winning the FFF award from me too Zoe! Very much deserved. On a stalker-like side note I saw your pics from the night on twitter and your hair looked amazing! How would a lady create such a style?

I read the headline and thought, of course, who doesn’t?
Turns out I was thinking of the disposable plain cotton ones, not the fancy pants presoaked ones.
That said, I use plain cotton ones soaked with a little witchazel toner, followed by my night cream. Works a treat for me.

I love peel pads! EmerginC have a fantastic set of Organic Peel and Clarifying pads that come in twin containers…so you clean your face use the peel pad first then after 5 mins wash it off and apply the clarifying pad which is rich in natural fruit acids, aloe, cypress, tea tree, green tea, willow bark and apple extracts and smells divine….it leaves my skin glowing for days!

Hi Zoe, where do face pads fit in withe also using the Mia clarisonic (both this after you bragged how rad it is). Will using both be skin overkill? I consider myself to be an intelligent woman but get SO confused by beauty’s world. Need.someone.clever.telling.me.what.to.do.

You can use both… the pads could act as a (say, weekly) ‘facial’, rather than a daily thing, like the Clarisonic. If ever in doubt though, go gentle.

Congratulations of winning the FFF award, Zoe! Very well deserved and couldn’t have gone to a nicer bird in my opinion!

the Dermalogica pads are really effective. they leave my skin glowing and can be used daily. Highly recommend them – I have a combination olive skin and am not sensitive to anything.

Thanks for this tip Zoe – I’ll be looking for those brands…….
By the way……..as well as VEEP, I can recommend THE NEWSROOM, EPISODES,….also BEING HUMAN, BOARD WALK EMPIRE, GAME OF THRONES, BREAKING BAD, THE IT CROWD, ….so many..
And for some genuine laughs about the life of a Tonight Show host – THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW – an oldie but worth re-visiting……lol.

I have used Clearasil Rapid Action Pads but word of warning girls, don’t use them near eyebrows or bangs, they can bleach your eyebrows. I learn’t that one the hard way. Maybe try other products before the Clearasil ones.

I understand that we’ll try anything in the search for clear unblemished skin…but I’ve never understood why you’d use something on skin that will BLEACH eyebrows! Anything that bleaches eyebrows (and towels, as in the case of the ubiquitous Proactiv) is too harsh to be used all over the skin and should be kept as a spot treatment only.

I generally use a mixture of retinol and vitamin C at night.
I’m guessing using any of these and then my usual combo would be too much?? Advice greatly welcomed!

What type of skin do you have?
only reason im asking is that I have been looking into the Skinstitut Retinol to control breakouts, and also their vitamin C powder, but I dont know anyone else who uses them for the same concerns as i have. I have moderately sensitive skin, but my combination skin gets the better of me and i really want to rid myself of the breakouts.
Would love to hear if the Retinol & Vitamin C work for you!

The best way I can describe it is to say my skin is strangely sensitive.
I do suffer breakouts (mostly around my chin, hormone related), but most OTT acne/pimple products inflamed my skin.
So then I switched to mild products (jurlique, cetpahil etc) and whilst my skin calmed down and was less red, it didnt solve the pimple problem.
I saw a dermatologist and it was him who suggested the retinol and vit C combo. When I first started using it (plus a glycolic scrub twice a week) my skin got a little flaky for about 2 weeks. Apparently thats normal.
But now, I cannot sing the praises of these products enough. My skin is way more even toned and vit C nukes an emerging pimple like nothing else. Best part for me was that areas of pigmentation have also faded heaps.
So, in short, I didnt start using the products to treat pimples but it works for me.
Hope that helps.

Sarah have you tried using just the retinol (with a mosituriser layered over the top) at night and Vitamin C in the morning? I only ask because it’s quite bizarre that someone would be prescribed both to use at night together. Vitamin C is honestly far better utilised in the skin as a daytime ingredient – it offers not only sun protection (Vit C has an SPF of 2) but also protection from free radical damage and pollution.
It’s common for retinol and Vit C to be prescribed for use together, but generally you’d use the retinol in the PM and Vit C in the am.
But if that’s what your derm told you to do, then obviously keep going as it’s working for you.

Interesting advice. I have used the vitamin c in the morning but I find it doesn’t feel nice under makeup. But maybe I should give it a go again.
What do you mix it with?
loading...
Oh and I use the skinstitut ones too.
loading...
Hey Sarah I’ve got that Skinsitut Vit C Powder too – I just mix it with my serum or moisturiser – whatever you’re slapping on your face in the morning!

Have never heard of these and will definitely give them a go!
I am praying to the beauty gods that you answer this question Zoe! I really want to try a liquid bronzer (on your advice) but I don’t think the Bobbi Brown one you recommended on Primped a couple of years ago is still being made. Can you suggest any other good ones? I’m after a really dewy, spring time look.
Thanks!

Hi Lizzy. The Body Shop do a really nice Bronzing Gel, it’s about $30 but a little goes a long way.

i ask the ladies at bobbi brown every few months if the liquid bronzer is coming back and its not. they are sick of me, im sick of hearing no. please give me an alternative zoe! my face is pale and sad…please make it happy and bronzed once more!

Lizzy try Becca liquid bronzer- amazing!!

There is a great St Tropez liquid bronzer for face! Great shade and you really only need the tiniest bit so it feels like good bang for your buck too!

Body Shop does one with similar consistency, YSL does a lovely creamy one that lasts well, Clinique and Becca and NP Set offer shimmering versions. I am just as bereft about the Bobbi Brown Bronzing gel, I assure thee.

So I just looked up Veep and watched a trailer…why have I not heard of this show before??? Freakin hilarious! Zoe, you will be responsible for many downloads! I’m gonna go get me some facial pads and swipe while I watch.

Yes! I love them Zoe. I discovered them thanks to a lady at the beauty counter at Barney’s New York who recommended Dr Colbert ones – my skin was congested and also horribly red and flaky around the nose area for some reason.
They are superb. Because my skin is sensitive I only use them about three times a week. Have just run out so need to get more, stat. But seems you can’t get these in Oz so may have to try some of your recs.
