I remember the exact moment I stopped wearing red lipstick. It was 1990, I was 18, and me and my newly scarlet lips were at university. As I walked into the uni bar, the guys there stopped, looked up from their beers, fell quiet, and stared.
The curious silence was finally broken by one male undergrad who murmured appreciatively, “Red rings.”
Do you get that?!
I didn’t until, pressed, he mumbled it was something to do with blow jobs and lipstick marks. Got a visual? Ewww!
Embarrassed, I removed the lipstick the next chance I got, jammed the tube deep into my backpack and stomped off in my 501’s and Doc Martens listening to The Breeders on my Walkman.
Fast forward 21 years and I’ve spent the last 7 days wearing red lipstick from morning till night. For a Dare. And I loved it.
My red lipstick renaissance began when I picked up a book called Anonymums. It’s the story of 3 mothers with young children who, bored with the monotony of their lives give each other dares to spice things up a little.
It made me think about how easy it is to fall into a fashion rut when we become mums; where we give in to the sartorial monotony of our ‘mummy uniforms‘. That is, we start to wear the same type of outfit day in and day out.
Keen to mix things up a little myself – and always up for a good dare – I decided to challenge myself and the readers of my blog with one of the dares from the book that particularly stood out to me: The Red Lipstick Dare.
The rules were simple. Wear red lipstick every day, from when you get dressed in the morning till you brush your teeth before bed at night. So that’s what I did.
Turns out, not that much has changed since the 90’s – but I sure as hell have.
Red lipstick still has the power to make people sit up and notice you – but this time around, instead of being embarrassed, I quite liked it.
All of a sudden, I became more noticeable.
The Barista who makes my coffee most mornings freshly regarded me with an approving glint in her eye. The mums at school drop-off did a double take (in a good way). People kept asking me “Where are you off to?” And the women in my boxing class at the gym struggled to keep up with me. Seems it’s true what they say: red makes you go faster.
But more importantly than other people noticing me, I became more noticeable to myself.
Red lipstick demands extra time, and an element of precision on application, and that effort is poorly offset by a scraped back messy bun and a pair of old cargos or tracksuit pants. So over the week of the dare, I found myself carving more time into my manic mornings to be able to make more of an effort with coordinating my outfits, and styling my look. And it felt bloody great to give myself that extra attention.
And with all of that extra attention I thrived.
- Wearing red lipstick made me feel more glamorous. Ever worn red lipstick to the beach? I did, and it rules.
- Wearing red lipstick made me feel more lady like. Something about a matte red-lip demands pearls. And I acquiesced.
- Wearing red lipstick made me feel more spontaneous. I snuck down to the beach to dip my toes into the water when I should’ve been working, and I grabbed a blanket and laid it in the backyard with my little one to watch the clouds make shapes in the sky.
- And it made me feel indulgent.
I indulged all week! I indulged in a chocolate croissant for breakfast, I drank an extra glass or two of wine, I watched The Bachelorette without shame, and I popped into a florist and bought a bunch of brightly-coloured roses – not as a gift for someone, or to decorate the home, but for just for me. For me! I set them in a vase next to my makeup mirror all week.
Interestingly, the guys in my life reacted similarly to my mates at the uni bar back in 1990, in that the sight of me in red lipstick jolted them into a slightly shocked silence.
But naturally their reactions came from a very different perspective: “it looks like your lips are bleeding” squeeked my son.
Yet this time around the less than flattering response failed to send me running for the make-up remover wipes. I liked my ruby lips. Damn, I loved them! And I wasn’t removing that lipstick for anyone. There was no way I was giving up on the dare, nor on how happy it was making me feel.
And that happiness left a trail of smudgy red lipstick marks all over coffee cups, babies’ cheeks, wine glasses and, until I got the knack of it, my teeth. Not quite the kinds of red marks the boys in the uni bar back in 1990 were suggesting, the dirty buggers.
Doing the Red Lipstick Dare shook things up a little and made me do a double-take on myself. It took me out of my mummy-rut and gave me a swift reminder that it’s OK to be a bit of a vamp, with a little sprinkle of camp. And it confirmed for me that, when it comes to a dare, I’m definitely no chicken.
So unlike the embarrassed 18 year old girl that I was – who buried her red lipstick in the bottom of a drawer after the attention it brought her – from now on I’ll be wearing my red lipstick whenever I want to make my mark.
Are you brave enough to wear red lipstick one day this week? If you do or have, show us in the comments!

I’ve been red lipsticking it up for a few weeks now and I love it! Just a slick of black eyeliner and red lips make me feel polished and glam. It is awesome! I just can’t wear it on the weekend because darling man kisses it all over my face in no time flat. So it is a work look or on with the Maybeline 24 hour for a special night out.

I LOVE Lippy!! I try to wear more pinky toned reds, and kind of Neon infused…if that makes sense! This photo was on the way to a trade fair, but it shows how i would do my makeup if I was going into my shop this week! I have a cold so i think the red nose and red lippy at home could make me look a little loopy!!

what red lipstick did you wear- it looks like the perfect shade in the image

Hi Justine,
I tried a few that week, but the one in the pic was Miss Classy by Minx Cosmetics http://minx.net.au/pages/collections/cosmetics/lips.html
Cheers!

This article made me so happy! I used to have to wear red lipstick for work (I was a flight attendant, but I’ve known some high street shop girls who have been asked to do the same thing). Since I finished that job I’ve avoided all opportunities to wear red lipstick. I actually love it though, its feminine, sexy, fun and empowering. I am definitely going to dust off my chanel and glam it up a bit more from now on if I feel inclined!!
loading...
Awesome! It’s been weeks now, and I’ll admit, I popped some on today – even though I’m at home working on my own…;)
loading...
You’re lucky. I have never been able to wear lipstick, bright red or otherwise. My lips are too thin and undefined and the colour always bleeds. No matter what lipliners, powder bases, whatever that I use!
loading...
That sounds like a question for Zoe!
loading...
Ooooh yes. I do wear red sometimes, but I should do it more. Means I have to not do much with my eyes though, and eyes are more my thing. But red is gooood ;D I’m lucky I’m one of those people that can actually wear it, so I should.

ok, going to a wedding today and am doing what I never imagined I’d do… wear red lipstick! i am already feeling more sexy and strong and I havent even put it on yet!
Thanks Andrea for inspiring me to step out of my comfort zone. x

I’ll bet you looked fabulous! x
loading...
Wow, if that was Andrea’s reaction to “rings”, God forbid someone with a knowledge of history informs her of red lips’ ancient symbolism concerning certain engorged parts of the female anatomy!
Do people really not know this anymore or do they just choose not to?

I wore a BRIGHT coral lip to a friends hens.. but all the extra attention scared me off
I havent worn it since!
Plus my husband hated it..
It sent my ‘self-consious-self’ into overdrive… but i so desperately want to wear it again! If i can work up the courage..

My dentist told me to wear red lipstick.. as I was complaining that my teeth weren’t white enough. She advised me to spend $20 on a bright red lippy and take the rest of the $400 and take a weekend away instead of ‘wasting money’ on teeth whitening!
loading...
What an awesome dentist!

I took this challenge as I am sick of my undefined look and have to say I was so happy with how it turned out… Ill be wearing it again for sure… Thanks Andrea for the challenge, keep em coming !

Thanks lovely. Will do. This weeks dare: wear something on your head, all week… !

Always wanted to try wearing red lipstick just never been sure it suits my blonde, pale look? What brand do you recommend for as similar aged woman doing the family & groundhog day kind of thing?!?

It definitely would suit you, look at Gwen Stefani!

I’ve worn red lipstick for so long that i am now trying out fushia and orange. LOVE LOVE LOVE a strong lip!x
loading...
Me too. I love red lipstick but have just this week moved to orange and fushia. I love it!

Oooh I would love to try this but have never in my 31 years worn lipstick. Not even to a wedding or special event, I have always worn a gloss.
While we are talking make up (and sorry in advance that I am slightly changing the subject of this post) can someone steer me in the right direction with easy make up for a Mummy? I just want something I can slap on my face to even out the look of my skin (have been using Dove Tinted Moisturiser – not bad) and what is a good, effective, reasonably priced blush? I have no idea if I need a cream blush (have heard of this phenomenon but have no idea on how to apply) or a powder blush.
I have no idea about make up so please don’t direct me to Zoe Foster’s videos because I watched one once and it was all about upside down triangles under my eyes with mysterious products and I felt like I had stumbled upon a secret make up club to which I have never belonged and never will!
So mascara I can manage, the red lipstick I can probably manage now that I have read this post but I just need the inbetween for my face! Help! xx

I am just like you, no clue at all.. I bought a MAC eyeshadow once and liked the quality of it, so I went to a MAC counter (Myer have some now) and asked one of the girls to find a suitable colour for me. I asked for a semi transparant (if that is even the term – medium coverage anyway) because I don’t like the ghost like look that a full cover can give. The girl put it on with a brush, which was much too thick for me, so I just put it on with my hands. It lasts all day.
It is probably pricey for you if you’re not used to spending on make-up, but so far it has lasted really well (I only wear it to work 3 times a week) and I’ve had it for longer than I should probably admit to, I think it was worth it.
I wear that with my mascara, and that’s all… boring mum. I wouldn’t even know what to do with a blush, but got interested when I saw Zoe apply bronzer in one of her videos. You and I could do that one too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-3-lN195Q0
The most important thing though, make sure you take it all off at night!! I find that is the hardest thing…
Good luck with the lipstick, you’re braver than me.

Red Lipstick is my uniform

I recently bought a Coral Lippy – now THAT is a standout colour.

Yawn. The mags have recycled this story for years. Nothing new whatsoever. MamaMia team, with all the new contributors you seem to have on board, I would have thought you could do better than flicking through back issues of Cosmo and Cleo!

You look absolutely amazing Andrea and I do love those sunnies too! I’ve never been brave enough to wear red lips as mine are on the Angelina Jolie side… big! I feel like I’m all lips if I wear a bright colour. Does anyone have any tips for those of us who are too timid?

Kai, I was thinking the exact same. I have very strong features also
so big lips + red lipstick makes me feel like its all too much. plus i dont wear much makeup (besides eyeliner) so feel like it doesnt blend!
oh the dilemma! haha

Red lipstick can also be very, very ageing. It suits some people but for most people over the age of thirty five pink or some variation on pink is much more flattering.
loading...
Creamy lipstick-based lip stains. They give a wash of colour but are not too intense. You get the benefit of the colour but they don’t require maintenance. Make sure you don’t go for the lip tint that is goopy and gets brushed onto your lips- they dry out your lips and bleed. Some brands sell lip stains as lipgloss and you don’t want that either.
For example I have this Bodyshop lip tint in red and I love it:
http://www.thebodyshop.co.uk/_en/_gb/catalog/product.aspx?ParentCatCode=C_Makeup&CatCode=C_Makeup_Lips&prdcode=84178m

Hi Kai!
My tips:
1. Go for matte instead of shiny if your lips are on the bigger side. (I envy you – mine are practically non-existent!)
2. Don’t line the lip. If you must, use a nude pencil. I like to keep the colour heavy in the middle of the lips and blend it towards to the rim. Makes it look much, much less harsh.
3. Texta style applicators are the way to go. Revlon makes a great one – Just Bitten – in the shade Flame. Good luck!
loading...
I would say try out a lippy that’s slightly sheer so you can build the colour- I love the Lipstick Queen crayons or Clinique has something similar called “chubby sticks”. I wear it during the day because it feels “done” but not like heavy makeup, it’s almost like a cross between lipgloss and lipstick!
loading...
Models Prefer also have a ‘lipgloss pencil’ which is like a bit fat brightly coloured crayon for your lips. They are a good colour without being as ‘heavy’ as a lipstick.
Priceline for about $10 i think.
loading...
I have worn red lipstick for more years than I can count. But I was a bit miffed recently when I read that it is too ‘aging’ for someone over 35. Boo!
I’m 38, the Mum of an 8 month old little boy and I still rock the red lippy!
I have very pale white skin, jet black hair and a demon rockabilly hair quiff.
Once a little girl told me I looked like Snow White! {I’ll take that thanks}
loading...
Did Coco Chanel get that memo? I don’t this she did.
I say – rock the red lips
loading...
Oh damn then I’m in BIG trouble now!
loading...
Nice! Rock your look with no apologies.
loading...
I wore it on Sunday night, for a dancing gig! Dance gives me an excuse to dress up and wear red lippy when normally I might feel selfconscious doing it. And I suck at applying makeup, so it’s difficult for me to do – but so worth it
loading...
Love a bit of red lippy on a day when I need a boost. Love wearing a hot pink or bright orange or plum too.
Took me years to find the right red though. Turns out the best for me was a Napoleon lipgloss.
Love your work, Andrea!
loading...
Thanks lovely x

I wear lipstick every day. Coral Crush from Maybelline and Pink Fame from Rimmel are the two shades I interchange. I have dark hair and pale colouring so I look a bit gothic unless I wear bright lipstick. It makes me feel feminine and fun, I love it. Anyone can wear red lipstick once they find the right shade.
loading...
Gotta try those.
loading...
Andrea I think you are wonderful for getting us all looking at stepping outside our own square. We can get so stuck in the same-same of daily drudgery, that sometimes all it takes is someone like you to get us re-thinking things again – so thank you for that!!! The dude at UNI should have had his balls removed (I would have said brains, but clearly he had none….) and it just goes to show how something so simple can have such a profound effect on someone so young – ah the power of words hey!? So I too will be getting out my red lippie and wearing it with some serious kick arse nearly 42 attitude from here on in!! Fantastic – Thank you xxx

Hi Pene,
You are welcome!
Yeah, it’s intimidating when a guy (or in this case, a group of guys) comment on your looks in a sexual way. It’s called sexual harassment…

I hate my teeth so i never wear red or bright lips as it draws more attention to them
loading...
Actually, wearing red lipstick makes the teeth appear more white- give it a try!
loading...
I really want to wear red lipstick! It completely glams up my fallback outfit (jeans, white t-shirt, blazer). I haven’t found a good shade for me though. I have red hair and fair, pink-based skin with dark eyes.
In theory blue-based should work but I think it actually doesn’t work with my skin and orange based is really bad. So far I have found I can do bright pink easier, even though in theory I’m not meant to wear pink.
Any recommendations, MMers?
loading...
Try Coral Crush by Maybelline. It seems to be a flattering shade on everyone.
loading...
Try something that is a brown based red – you might find that once you put it on it actually alters to look more ‘red’… Maybe even try mixing a red into one of your favourites to alter the tint?? Have fun!
loading...
Try a blue based red with a raisin colour lip pencil underneath – it tones down the red a little, it should match your hair and complexion
)

Heatwave by NARS just brought it for my birthday never had red lips!! amazing change and wears so well !!
loading...
Thanks everyone!!

My fave at the moment is NYX’s soft matte lip cream in Amsterdam – a bright mostly matte red. It is available online. Halfway between a gloss and a lippie, it has a comfy texture and is still quite striking!
I also like MAC’s Russian Red Lipglass for during the day.
loading...
It is so funny you should write this. Bolstered by Mia and the wonderful Zoe Foster, I have started wearing bright red lipstick also. It has totally given me more confidence. I went to dinner with girlfriends and they commented in my different demeanour. Its a fun way to liven up my mother/housewife life.
loading...
Zoe’s done some great tutorials on wearing red lipstick, and there have been some really useful articles on Mamamia about wearing bright lipstick – tips from the pros! Agree, it’s fun!

I purchased Mac Ruby Woo on impulse earlier this year, a bright blue-based red. At the time I was pregnant, feeling like death and loathe to draw attention to myself so don’t ask me why I bought it.
After reading one of Andrea’s tweets I was inspired to find the tube and give it a spin. It is a gorgeous red and definitely has it’s place however for everyday wear I love Giorgio Armani’s sheer lipstick in Rouge Transparent. I used to always say red never suited me but this is a sheer, layer-able red that doesn’t flake or need lipliner. Yes I sound like a sales assistant but it is that good.
This week I’ve swapped red lipstick for red jeans so if anything the dare at least pulled me out of somewhat of a rut.
loading...
Awesome! And now I want your red jeans
loading...
Bit OT, but on the subject of those lip stain pens, people please prep your lips properly before using them. Since they’ve become popular I see at least a couple of women every day with a ridiculous amount of bleed lines all around their mouth. It looks dreadful. Use lip liner and concealer around the edges of your mouth, or use a product like elf lip lock pencil.
loading...
Would love a red lip – however like others below I find it comes off really quickly, I think I must eat it! Even the ‘long-stay’ versions…. the 8 hour one is about 8 minutes for me… maybe because my lips aren’t very full…. Anyway – a while ago I vaguely remember that someone here – Mia possibly – was talking about lip stains, which apparently last for ages and don’t smudge off or anything. Does anyone know more about these? What are they like? Where to get, brands to look out for etc.?
loading...
prep your lips with concealer and use a lip liner and it won’t move. I use MAC russian red when I perform, and even after sweating and eating and wearing it for hours it doesn’t budge – promise
loading...
It’s Exxy but benefit have seriously awesome lip stains! They have a red, coral and pink one and they are all gorgeous. And great in summer, because they don’t feel like you’re wearing any make-up but SERIOUSLY last on your mug, even in ridiculously humid weather!
loading...
unfortunately I am not one of those lucky people who are blessed with beautiful teeth, so red lippy is a no go for me. But red nails on your toes however….
loading...
Well red has to be better than the coral/orange hideousness that is currently making the rounds! But even though I know less is more I can’t help but feel I would need more make up on the rest of my face to balance the look? And can only imagine the looks at the park as I push my kids on the swing. Maybe I’m just not brave enough.
loading...
More makeup? Not necessarily, but I reckon that it kind of demands an extra level of polish from your makeup / clothes that you may not ordinarily use.
That said, since the dare I’ve been known to whack on jeans and a t, shove my hair in a high bun, whack on the lippy and a pair of sunnies and I’ve had comments about how glam I look. Who knew it could be so easy?!
loading...
Red lipstick is awesome! I have quite a few different ones, ranging from orangey-red, rusty, chilli, cherry, fire-engine and, my favourite vampish plummy-red. Wearing lip-liner in a similar shade is *mandatory* as it seems to help the lipstick stay-put.
loading...
I love this post Andrea, I can’t wait to go & buy a new red lipstick. I haven’t worn red in 10 years – I want to wear my new lipstick with your fabulous sunglasses in the top image. You look fantastic & I want some of that!, where did you get them?.
loading...
Thanks Louisa! The sunnies were a birthday pressie: House of Harlow ‘Nicole’ Sunnies, you can buy online here:

I have taken to wearing bright red or orange lipstick for the past six months and I LOVE IT! If it’s not lipstick it’s bright red gloss.

ps. the only better thing to do is to add my BRIGHTEST RED shoes as well!

I splurged a month ago and bought a red Tom Ford lipstick (cherry lush). It goes on like butter and has the most beautiful packaging! I dab it on when I go to uni and go heavier for special occasions. It definitely makes me feel special and indulgent.

Love red lipstick although I hate it when it leaves a ring around the outside of your lips (not on top, but you know when the inside of the lip fades????) Anyone got suggestions on how to avoid this? Aside from constantly reapplying….
****** Off topic – Is it just me or is anyone else tired of other commenters trying to sell their blog by entering a comment just for the sake of it? Seems to be happening more and more.
loading...
Benefit’s “Definer Liner” is awesome for that. It’s an invisible wax line that stops lipstick from bleeding.
loading...
Hi Tina,
The problem isn’t that it bleeds above the line, it’s that the lipstick disappears in the middle of my lips and then there is a red ring around the top of the lips (within the lip zone).
Does that make sense?
loading...
Use a matching lip-liner on over your entire lip, apply lipstick, then blot with a tissue and re-apply your lipstick. Matte colours last longer than creamy, frosty, or gloss. To keep lipstick off your teeth, suck your finger after you apply it. I hope this helps!
loading...
Hi Nicki,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I do all that…
It still rubs off faster closer to the inside of my mouth – not evenly.
loading...
Have you tried a layer of concealer as a base to start with? I found this helped.
But really, red lipstick is a pretty high maintenance look – you need to keep checking and reapplying to some extent…
loading...
Hi Isabella, I posted a link to my blog below, so I guess you’re talking about me… i just find that when I read a post on something I’ve blogged about too I like to share the link, just to add to the conversation. And I like finding other people’s blogs in the same way! I have discovered a lot of blogs through mamamia and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. But sorry if I annoyed you!
loading...
I like reading other people’s blogs, especially when it’s about an interesting topic that is being discussed!!
I have been introduced to some great writers because people self-promoting.
I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all, as long as it’s kept relevant.
loading...
I like finding other blogs. I have found some really interesting ones through Mamamia that I otherwise would not have known about.
loading...
Me too! And followed them on twitter. It’s a community!
loading...
I agree. Some I only look at the one time, but there are a few that I check a lot (particularly IV Therapy if you’re reading!) because I really like the writing.
Don’t be too scathing – it takes a bit of courage to put your blog out there in a public forum like this.
loading...
Thanks guys! Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way
loading...
Me too!

Hi Andrea, I love red lipstick. I am currently a stay at home mum on mat leave and it can feel a bit drab in my mummy uniform (jeans, t-shirt, runners) I find just a hint of red lipstick brightens my tired face and makes me feel just that little bit glam.
loading...
For sure! I love how it takes the focus off TIRED EYES
loading...
i love red lipstick but find that i have to maintain it too much. Also i work in a call centre and the headset constantly rubs on my lips so it’d get all over my face! not a good look!
loading...
You need to find the right one! Try the MAC matte colours. They don’t smudge and if you want a bit of shine pop some gloss on the top! Try Lady Danger, Ruby or Diva!
loading...
I wore a fuschia pink with the same effect… incredible how much a bit of colour can transform your face, and the world around you!
loading...
I cannot wear red lippy. I just don’t have enough lip. I usually wear a pale frosty pink and boy are they hard to find!
loading...
I thought so too (and maybe mine are too thin..who knows?) It’s a fun experiment.
loading...
I dunno, looking through that slideshow I thought..hmm matte red is not really that flattering to anyone, except those with the most flawless skin (like you, Andrea). I do like the bright element of red though. I like those long-stay super-glossy, lip-pumper lippies in red. You get the bright colour without the harsh effect.
loading...
Am dancing in my seat that you think I’ve got flawless skin (I don’t!) I reckon the lipstick detracts from it…
loading...
i love red lipstick and i think it suits me, but my husband hates it (any bright lippy really!) so i tend to wear when im out with girlfriends and not with him, not sure if i am wrong avoiding something that ilike because he doesn’t but at the same time i’d like him to look at me and not hate what he sees… do you avoid something because your husband/partner doesn’t like? i’m curious…
loading...
Hells no. Tell him he can deal with it.
You start not wearing lipstick because he doesn’t like it… where does it end? Also if by just putting on lipstick he suddenly “hates what he sees” isn’t that not a good sign? Shouldn’t he look at you with lipstick on and say god I hate that lipstick, but goodness I love you. Then kiss you madly in an attempt to remove said lipstick?
I get changing habits (if you smoke and your other person doesn’t then you might quit for example) that do effect the other person or are bad for you etc etc but lipstick? Seriously?
There are parts of my… well we haven’t really defined that bit but for arguments sake we’ll call him my gentleman friend…. that I’m not the most fond of, but it comes as a part of the package with him so I don’t give two figs.
loading...
thanks for the advice wear it proudly, i didn’t mean my husband hates me when i wear red lippy, but the red lippy itself, and he dealt with it many times, he also never asked me to remove it, i do it because i know he doesn’t love it… you are right i will wear it prodly when i feel like it
loading...
I think that’s a very reasonable response, because you are considering his preferences which is a loving thing to do – but also it’s not stopping you from wearing it whenever you really want to or when you’re out with friends.
My fiance has the same reaction to my make up, so I just wear clear gloss when I’m out with him, but with my girlfriends I can get as loud colours as I want =D
loading...
glossy, i agree with you, i think we are always trying to please the people we love in some way or another, at least i am, but i would like to make it very clear that is my choice if what i wear or don’t and he has never put any pressure on me in regards to that, its just a matter of his taste being different than mine.
loading...
My boyfriend hates the red lipstick too. I don’t understand either!

My partner doesn’t like me wearing lipstick either. It comes down to ” it’s icky, and get on his lips” when I kiss him. I dont wear it around him because I prefer him not to sqwirm like a kid, and I want him to happily kiss me

The bit about the guy mumbling something about red rings and blow jobs got me.
Unless you were famous at your Uni for giving them, I can’t see why you would remove the red lippy because some div at a bar gives you this rather pathetic and childish explanation.
Me, I would have put on another coating of red in front of him, give him the finger and walk off telling him that he’ll never find out from you. Verbal kick in the goolies ?

She was 18.

I wish that I understood the point that you are trying to make.
18 year old girls are quite adept at telling you where to go if they don’t appreciate your comment every bit as well as a 28 year old woman is. I’d suggest that it would be the 18 year old more likely to really let fly.

Not all 18 year old girls are adept at telling people where to go. It also may not have been a safe thing to say. Ever seen a girl get hit by a strange guy in a bar when they have stood up for themselves? I have and it is not pretty. It happens.
The comment from the stranger was revolting.
Sometimes to walk away is the best thing to do.
But I think it IS a shame that she stopped wearing lipstick. It’s indicative of how sensitive some women can be regardless of age. And it’s not an indictment on Andrea that she stopped wearing something that made her happy. It happens and we move on – as she has done.

We obviously know different types of 18 year old girls.

SOme people obviously dont get out much.
Or are aware of the potential danger associated with taking uneccesarry risks.

Bradley 18 is the year right out of high school, lots of girls at that age aren’t adept at telling a big group of drunk guys to get lost when they say sexually explicit/humiliating things to them. Many 18 year old’s have never been exposed to that kind of environment before. Dealing with those kind of situations is something that comes with experience.

Couldnt have said it better Melissa J.
Thank you.

I’ve spoken from my own experience. You have spoken from yours. Neither of us is incorrect.

I guess the difference is I once was an 18 year old girl. And it was only a few years ago. And my comment wasn’t judging the author based on what I would have hypothetically done.

Yes, Mellisa. You have the moral high ground because you have been an 18 year old girl and I haven’t.
One hundred thousand apologies, Memsahib.
Was I judging the author ? How ? I haven’t judged anyone, either favourably or unfavourably….yet.

Well I think my sex and age are relevant Bradley when we’re discussing the behaviour of 18 year old uni students at a uni bar. I’m not sure how old you are or how much time you’ve recently spent in that kind of environment, but I’ve assumed not a lot. So if you want to impose your values onto the authors situation and then make other comments about how well you know the mindset and social skills of 18 year women then I think it’s perfectly reasonable that I point out my personal experience is probably more expansive and recent than yours.
I don’t really see that as ‘moral high ground’.
Anyway I am just going to stop commenting on things you write. You irk me.

Having worked in hospitality in a pub that catered to a lot of uni students, I speak from experience. I served them, I know what they preferred to drink, I know how they spoke to each other.

I wouldn’t even consider wearing red lippy unless Zoe Foster recommended it.
Sorry Andrea.

Best. Comment. Ever!

I look awful with red lippy! Even makeup artists have agreed it’s not my colour. Doesn’t work for everyone..

I’m surprised by that Kerri, usually brunettes suit at least some shades of red. Maybe a bright, bold pink, or orange works better for you?

It’s more that the rest of my face looks crap in contest – seems to bring out every flaw I have. Red only works if I’m wearing tons of foundation, and I don’t like to do that. So I stick to colours that look good on naked skin.

I love the idea of wearing red lipstick but I have a nose and cheeks that tend towards redness and red lipstick just makes them scream “rudolph”

I have the same problem!
But then I found green primer and concealer. It is nothing short of amazing!
