How delightfully appropriate – a winter cocktail trend that you can actually wear at night… during winter. ‘Cocktail jeans’ is the phrase coined to describe those printed skinny pants that have become a red carpet favourite (we’re talking Kardashians to Katie Holmes).
If you take your style cues from celebs, it seems denim jeans– as long as they’re printed, textured or coloured and teamed with some staggeringly-high heels – might be the new little black dress.
Here is a gallery of celebrity inspiration on dressing up your jeans.

Would you replace a cocktail dress with printed jeans? How would you style yours?

I got an official warning last week for wearing red pants to work but am able to wear a ridiculously loud floral pair of cropped trousers – go figure! Just sent this article to the boss in my defense! haha

I had glitter jeans and heavily embroidered jeans in the 90s (the latter often paired with a peasant headscarf, see-through lace top and about 2000 silver bangles) – cocktail jeans look cute on thin young things but I think I’ll steer clear …

Im a huge fan! A new twist (or print) on the old favourites.. Cant go wrong!

Gosh, some people here are a bit grouchy. I love this style! It’s so cute and happy!

there is never anything new in fashion
its all been done before
imagine following in the footsteps of Hot Tuna!!!!

they look stupid. what is wrong with people!

I wore printed jeans as a teen back in the 80s. First pair was the “flower pants” available from surf shops and made by Hot Tuna (I think?) Eastcoast shops also had printed jeans, I had a pair of black jeans with purple, pink and blue flamingos on them and black jeans with grey roses on them

I used to love Hot Tuna! I had a tiny Hot Tuna printed denim mini skirt back in 1987! I was fashion forward and I didn’t even know it lol

Yes!! I had two pairs Of Hot Tuna pants and they were my absolute favourite xx I’d forgotten about a east coast!!! What a great shop that was….. Memories if a great time!!!!!

I wore these in the 80′s, from memory I think it was Madonna who started it.

Printed jeans were around in Australia way before Madonna. Where I grew up in Bayside Melbourne girls were wearing flower pants from surf shops as early as 1981

Knew I’d heard this term used before….after a quick search, yep – you posted an almost identical article in Sept last year. Methinks it’s not such a new trend!
Oh, and I’m in agreeance with Caroline – not on your life!!

I happily disagree with everyone. I love coloured denim and printed pants! I think they look fab.
I have these SABA ones: http://www.saba.com.au/jean-jegging/w1/i5706399/ and just live in them.
Boo the naysayers!

Olivia Palermo looks fab! But unless you’re fashion forward like her steer clear!

Are you seriously kidding me with this article? This particular “fashion trend” is so bad that it is recognisably unflattering!!! They have never looked good unless you are Miranda Kerr! This look was atrocious in the eighties, abomnibal in the 90′s and now they try and relaunch it???

Agree. Floral jeans are woeful. I can handle coloured, but floral are just wrong.

My favourite outfit was the girl standing behind Jessica Albda – oops!

Floral and printed jeans are NOT new. We had them back in the day – late 70s into the eighties I think (so long ago now it’s a bit of a blur). Of course children born after that wouldn’t remember. . .

I love printed jeans, but can’t wear them cos I have thighs like a rugby player

They just look shit, even on those beautiful women.

They remind me of when Fraulein Maria made clothes for the children out of curtains in the sound of music. I’ll give ‘em a miss.

Fraulein Maria! Love it! Spot on with your comparison too!

I think I’ll put these in the same category as that ‘papou’ thing (whatever it was called) from yesterday. Looks ok if you’re a size 8 but god-awful on anyone else…

Perfect for a party – a pyjama party!

Umm, I’m going to guess that the answer to your question “is this the new cocktail dress?” is a resounding NO. The pants might be cute, but hardly any of those pictures are of people at cocktail-style events.

I agree. There is no way any of those outfits are suitable for “cocktail” dress code, not even close!
Maybe they are called cocktail jeans because they look like you spilt your cocktail all over them.

My daughters dress code for her wedding was semi formal, sadly one of the guests turned up wearing glitter jeans…certainly not what we expected…had to hide her at the back of the group photos.
