RE: use of the term, ‘partner’ – somebody might be able to recollect some detail here, but I’m pretty sure that this started a few years ago – initiated / promoted by ??? the purpose being to provide equality for gay couples.
I was teaching a few years ago when I first heard this issue raised on behalf of gay teachers. Is the term, ‘partner’ now politically correct? I imagine a lot of men and women would still prefer to be ‘husband’ or ‘wife’ but I could be wrong. Whatever, I would personally like names provided in the captions for the people photographed.

Lauren Pavlich’s dress is my favourite. Although I like strapless, I think they’re done to death. Lovely to see something so elegant, classic, beautiful and different.
loading...
Are Aaron Sandilands and Jenny Sandilands married to each other? Or is it just a coincidence they have the same surname?
loading...
What’s the Brownlow medal…who are all these people?
loading...
Would love to know the responses if this gallery was put in front of a similar number of men?
loading...
So, of course, none of the papers/news focused on what Rouba Houli wore, sigh.
loading...
Rouba’s dress – style, colour and fabrics – would probably be another of my top favourites but this photo does not show enough of the gown. Also, the dark background is a problem for the dress in this particular pic.
loading...
wish they had devoted less time to brynne edelston’s ‘shock tactics’ and more to the absolutely stunning rouba houli!
loading...
Why are the Edelstons’ surnames spelt differently??
loading...
typo i would think?
loading...
Simone and Rouba by a long shot. Easy elegant style and natural beauty.
loading...
Symone and Roubra

Symone Demetriou – gorgeous colour, and she doesnt look like she is trying too hard – just a gorgeous lady in a lovely dress.
Cath Heard and Cameron Ling’s partner are also great.
I hate the overt ‘try hard’-ness of the whole Brownlow WAGS thing, so these are the ladies I picked out as looking more like ladies who have a nice dress, rather than women trying to out do each other.
loading...
Just a question – why are wives now called ‘partner’? Just wondering??
loading...
I thought that too. Andrew Embley wife’s name is Rayne, they have been married 5 years and they have 2 kids together. I think that deserves something more than just ‘partner’.
loading...
I know that Jonathon Browne and his wife have at least one child and she has also been named as his ‘partner’… bit strange…
loading...
I dont think its strange at all. I’m married, have been for years and years, have a couple of children etc but have never changed my name, go by Ms and have never in all our years of marriage introduced each other as this is my Wife Jade, or this is my Husband X. Its simply This is Jade or this is X. People can work it out but I couldnt care less if people know our relationship status or not!
I feel like its saying this is our house, it cost $$$$ or sharing some other personal detail.
But of course that is my humble opinion! Partner is of course safe.
loading...
techinally, all of the women are the players’ “partners” to the event.
logistically, would be difficult to ask every single couple “so are you guys legally married? do you prefer partner or girlfriend or wife?” and to record that correctly!
loading...
I would have been a hopeless footy wife, wouldn’t cut it at all.
loading...
I’m not really a footy fan, but I actually can remember when the Brownlow Medal was about the guys who played the game and skills and sportsmanship displayed on the field. Now it’s mainly about who they’ve taken to the event and what that person is wearing.
Again Brynne Edelsten proves that looking cheap can cost a great deal of money.
loading...
Rouba Houli is lovely – and proof you don’t need to flash flesh to look good!
loading...
I think they all look lovely, but really overdressed for the occasion. When did the brownlow turn into the fashion equivalent of a Hollywood award ceremony? Weird.
loading...
Hi mamamia team….Bryce Gibbs’ partner is lauren Tscharke – my husband’s cousin. You might like to update?

Why can’t I see your galleries??
loading...
Hey Anonymous, are you trying to view the gallery on a phone?? We’re looking into it… stay tuned!
loading...
No, on the computer… and it’s just started working now. But I do often have trouble with the MM galleries.
loading...
One one browser (Firefox I think), I had to disable my ad blocker to get the galleries from Mamamia to work – maybe check that if it happens again.

i would like to say how gorgeous the two pregnant ladies in white looked, Lynette Carroll and Haylea McCann, they looked so beautiful. Especially Haylea showing off that bump, i can only ever hope i look that good pregnant! and both just so classy!
loading...
Agreed! Although to be honest I didn’t realise Lynette was pregnant.
Either way, lots of stunning white/pale neutral dresses this year!
loading...
me either. i love it when a pregnant woman can look so elegant and classy
loading...
Not enough Buddy Franklin eye candy in this lot of pictures!
loading...
He didn’t attend because he was ineligible. Such a waste.
loading...
I LOVED Rebecca Judd’s dress!!! I would love to be able to wear yellow, but it washes me out too much.
Does anyone know the designer?
loading...
I’m pretty sure that is a Perth-based designer Aurelio Costarella
loading...
wow some of those boys have done very well for themselves!
loading...
BRYNNE! I love Brynne.
And Taylor Wilson looks like a 90s Goth going to her year ten formal in a Ren-Faire themed dress, argh.
loading...
I only watched a bit of it towards the end, so I’d only seen her sitting down & I thought it looked quite good, but the full-length isn’t quite so nice. I like her hair, but I don’t know if it really goes with that style of dress.
loading...
Wow, Rayne Embley (Andrew Embley’s wife and mum to his two babies) must love being described as “partner” with no name attached!
Surely 2 more minutes research on google could have filled in the blanks MM!
loading...
I find ‘partner’ really offensive. I wouldn’t like to just be labelled it, I’m sure these women and men don’t and the media typing ‘partner’ wouldn’t either.
loading...
What’s wrong with the word partner now? Every time I am on this website I find some sensitive soul is offended by something that I’d never in a million years consider offensive. Have you considered that she might refer to herself as his partner? Or that perhaps she is an intelligent confident woman who couldn’t care less what label they attach to her?
Also, I am offended that you find the word partner offensive and that you’re speaking on behalf of everyone and assuming that we all want to be or need to be wives.
loading...
Thank you for calling me a sensitive soul and I’m sorry you were offended. I don’t mind the word partner, only when it’s not acknowledging someone especially when this is about the women’s fashion.
I didn’t speak on behalf of everyone either and your assumption of my assumption was totally wrong. I merely meant that the lady’s or man’s name rather than ‘partner’ would be more appropriate.
loading...
I think it’s the generic use, without actually naming the woman herself, that’s causing this protest?
loading...
i think theyre all pretty amazing and beautiful.
What i like about the AFL Wags is that they seem so much more normal and accessible than the League or Soccer Wags – a lot of them have their own careers, they are all incredibly gorgeous but not Victoria Beckham thin – its refreshing.
The only one who worried me is Rebecca Judd – she had a baby in July – July this year – and she is not only back to her fighting fit self, but she seemed bonier than usual. I cant help but think that there is just too much pressure on all mums to look amazing within 5 minutes of the birth, whether they are famous mums or not. Makes me very sad. :>(
loading...
I really think many factors are involved in how a woman bounces back after a baby. I was very lucky, I ate heaps but only put on 9 kgs during pregnancy. My baby breast fed 8=10 times a day and I was starving ALL the time and so ate something every time I breast fed (even at 11pm, 1 am, 3 am…). By the time I was 6 weeks post partum aside from having a tiny little pudge above my c-section scar and slightly curvier hips, I basically looked like I hadnt had a baby, and due to the c section the most I could do in terms of exercise was a very gentle daily walk. Am now at 8 months pp and while my body isn’t exactly the same (boobs deflated big time when I stopped breast feeding, hips still a little bit curvier) as pre pregnancy, its pretty close.
So I think Judd just might have been a bit like me and been one of the very lucky women who seem to bounce back pretty well after having a baby.
Oh and I love the style of her dress but not too keen on the colour.
loading...
well LUCKY you. She might have been lucky, but I’m sure she knew she (judd) had to look nothing but fabulous on this awards night and probably worked very hard to make sure she did! There is definitely pressure on women to look amazing.. really not fair and it is sad
loading...
Oh come on, she is a model and her husband is one of Australia’s best and highest paid football players. It’s not like she can’t afford a personal trainer, nanny and someone to help her with her meals so it shouldn’t be that difficult for her to find time to exercise and look amazing. Judging by THAT red dress she wore to Brownlow a few years ago, I think it’s fair to say she loves attending these things and showing off her figure. Not that there is anything wrong with that but I’ll save my sympathy for someone else.
loading...
I think the worst pressure in fact comes from other women. She was skinny before bub, she’s young and it was her first baby. Hardly surprising she’s looks the way she does. She looks great, good on her, move on.
loading...
oh thank you! Let’s all stop judging post baby bodies – too big, too skinny – whatever! so long as they are looking after their children who gives a crap.
loading...
Some women are genetically “bonier” than others. Have a look at R.Judd’s sister/mother.
PLEASE don’t start suggesting (without knowing her) she has been pressured to look that way or purposely tries to look ‘bony’ – a friend of mine who is genetically very thin was distraught after constant questions as to whether she was anorexic. JUST as damaging as telling someone they look too large.
loading...
Lauren Poulter – so incredibly elegant. The lines on her dress….wow.
loading...
Agreed – More is more approach. Loved it.
loading...
In my opinion, the best dressed ladies were: Nadia Coppolino, Rebecca Judd, Lauren Phillips and Lauren Poulter. Cath Herd is a stunning lady but damn that dress was soooo boring.
loading...
Lauren Poulter hands down!
loading...
I loooove Symone Demetriou’s dress. have a ball to attend in December – anyone know the designer??? It’s gorgeous – classy, elegant and a great colour (although I’d love it in red!). Other than that, some pretty stunning dresses and seriously stunning WAGS – lots of blokes punching above their weight, it has to be said!
loading...
Alex Perry
loading...
Thanks Shop Girl
Which season is the gown from and where do I find it???
loading...
Cath Heard wins!!!
wow. hollywood impressive
loading...
lovely dress but the colour (or lack thereof) is a bit odd – why not get the dress in a nice bright colour?
loading...
or in a really pale/neutral/pastel lilac al-la Duchess of Cambridge in LA’s lovely dress…
loading...
I liked it because it showed her off as a seriously beautiful woman who didn’t have to go for all the trimmings. She looked so cool and at ease. Also thought Symone Demetriou’s dress really worked.
loading...
the rotating fashion pod was the poxiest thing i have seen on tv for a while!
loading...
I agree! I couldn’t watch it, I got too mad. Love seeing the fashion but i just found that the women having to stand awkwardly on a rotisserie was so, so wrong. My guy said that it happens at all red carpets but I’ve never seen it before.
loading...
I read a comment that described the women as ‘on a lazy susan’… perfect!
loading...
Cath Heard was my favourite out of those dresses. Also like Symone Dimetrou and Nadia’s green dress (with Jimmy Bartel) which was not shown there. I found there weretoo many white/cream ones that looked a little too wedding dress for my liking anyway.
loading...
but did not like Lauren Phillips dress, and she normally is one of my faves too.
loading...
Yeah some very lovely ladies all round, but agree that Symone Demetriou gets the gong. Classy, hot, sexy, you name it.
loading...
I love Andrew Demetriou’s wife Symone’s outfit! My favourite by far! Stunning
What was Rebecca Judd thinking!?!? She def peaked in THAT red dress
loading...
Cath Heard! stunning dress, not too showy and really flattering on her as well.
loading...
How do I view gallery on my iPhone? I’ve had this problem with other galleries too …
loading...
Same!!
loading...
I had a baby around the same time as Rebecca Judd and my body has not snapped back like that at all. Sigh.
loading...
She probably can’t breath with all the corseting sucking her in.
loading...
I’m sure she has done hours of personal training daily, and would have all of her low-carb-low-fat-tiny-portion-sized-no-sugar meals made for her by a chef or something.
She probably also has a nanny to watch over her children while she does hours of personal training daily! – something that most of us just can’t afford!
loading...
Sorry, but that is extremely judgemental.
I know several people who have snapped back into shape quicker than that, with no assistance.
In the same way people shouldnt be judged for not snapping back into shape, people who do shouldnt be subject to criticism.
loading...
Yes you are right it was probably abit judgemental of me. I accept what you say about many women bouncing back quickly with no assistance, but I find it extremely unlikely that every celebrity or person in the public sphere just happens to bounce back quicky and without assistance after giving birth, I think it very likely that some who bounce back do exacty as I described above, granted, as you said, Rebecca Judd may not be one of them!
loading...
I am probably a bit sensitive regarding this at the moment.
My poor sister has been in tears lately because at 3 weeks post birth, doing nothing but going for a few walks she is 3kg less than her start weight (healthy start weight + pregnancy + baby) and people have been quite awful with their comments to her.
loading...
Sorry anon but I don’t see how this is judgemental, I think it’s a really good point and one women should consider when comparing themselves to a celebrity. Obviously some people have good genes and get their bodies back as soon as they give birth (my mum was one of them) but I too find it very hard to believe that every single celebrity just happens to be one of these people.
Obviously we don’t know what goes on inside Rebecca Judd’s house but I think it’s fair to assume that with a husband who makes millions she probably leads a slightly different life to your average woman who just gave birth. I would find it very hard to believe that she doesn’t have someone to watch her baby and clean her house while she exercies and has her hair done. This is not a judgement of her, I would do the same thing if my husband was a millionaire.
loading...
I dont think its ‘fair to assume’ at all, but each to their own.
loading...
Oh come on, surely you don’t think she has the same life as the new mother who’s partner works in a factory and makes a minimum wage. Of course she doesn’t and I don’t think that’s an assumption, I think that’s a given!
loading...
“hours of personal training daily” ?
perhaps she uses her time to actually care for her son herself? what a revolutionary idea….
just because you can financially afford a nanny, doesn’t mean you employ one!
loading...
And if you read my comment just 2 or 3 down you would see that I admitted I was being a little judgmental.
loading...
Her dress strategically contains a corset. I suspect it’s helping a little.
loading...
far too much fake tan!
loading...
Some of these girls look like they haven’t had a decent meal for a long time! Their arms are like little twigs – I think my chihuahua could beat them in an arm wrestle!
And how do some of these footy players end up with such beautiful girl friends…is it because they have nice personalities and good hearts? LOL
On a less bitchy note most of them look beautiful. Tania Hird looks lovely as always and Demetrious’s wife looks lovely too.
loading...
I thought ALL of these points while perusing the gallery too!
loading...
Would be great if we could view the gallery on mobile site, I switched back to regular and it still won’t let me get further than the pic of the Edelsteins
loading...
I so agree I can never get galleries to work on my iPhone
loading...
Tania Hird always looks classy. I thought Leigh Matthew’s wife looked lovely too.
loading...
You think so? She looks the same every year and has the trifecta tandori tan, obvious fake boobs and a very 90′s dress.
Would be lovely to see her look more natural and wear something a bit more fashionable. Like Cath herd she looks so naturally pretty and her dress has a simple elegance.
Hird is looking quite similar tobrynn!!
loading...
Rouba Houli could teach the rest a thing or two about how less flesh is sometimes more; she looks classy and stunning. Cath Heard is beautiful and very Catherine Heigl. Points also for Lynette Carroll and Tania Buckley.
Not a fan of Mrs Judd’s outfit, although that’s an amazing post-baby body.
And excuse my ignorance, but why do the Edelstons get invited?
loading...
@snoop – agree Rouba Houli looks gre-5
loading...
he was manager/ owner or something like that of sydney years ago back in the days of Warrick Capper
loading...
Rouba Houli has the most stunning face. She actually has my vote for the classiest of them all. Her eyes are just beautiful.
loading...
I totally agree! Because everything is covered up, her face is the focus- you probably notice her gorgeous eyes and amazing skin more than if she was wearing a dress with a plunging neckline.
loading...
For the right kind of money anyone can go.
loading...
Didn’t Rebecca Judd have a baby?? What did she have and when?
loading...
boy born in late July…. amazing i know
loading...
Cath Heard’s dress is a winner for me, but the rest seemed a little predictable. My second choice is Rouba Houli – so good to have a variation from the strapless year 12 formal look!
loading...
Is there anyway to view the gallery from this app/mobile website?
loading...
I love fashion and looking at dresses (the red carpet was the only part of the Brownlow’s that I watched) but rotating the women around in a circle just didn’t sit right with me..
loading...
My god, I’ve yet to find a dress I like. They all look a bit like year 12 formal dresses, with the notable exception of Brynne Edelsten, obviously.
loading...
Not loving Rebecca’s dress this year :/
loading...
Didn’t Rebecca Judd just have a baby????!!!! She looks amazing.
loading...
jenny sandliands looks great!
rouba houli is all class.
loading...
I thought Rouba looked gorgeous too.
loading...
Nowhere near enough glitter, tandoori-tans or bolt-on boobs this year! Most of the ladies look really lovely, which is a bit of a departure from past years. I think Rebecca Judd’s dress waas nice but maybe could have been a different colour??
loading...
