Beauty eds get a lot of stuff for free. More stuff that you would BELIEVE. And then times that by a gazillion. And square it.
So the true test of a good product for me is when someone who gets a lot of shit for free, reaches into their pocket and hands over their own money. Because then it MUST be good.
In the video below, I asked Zoe for her top 20 beauty products ever. The ones she needs at all times. Whittled down from the 18903 she has. This is the first in a series of Zoe videos. In future ones we ask her about many other things. But be patient. Sit back and gobble up this one first.

I’ve started this post so many times because I want to write it without gushing but it’s impossible. BUY THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY. There you go. And not because Zoë Foster is one of my dearest friends. Many friends have written books that I haven’t read (sorry). But this one?
I FUCKING LOVED IT.
I read it over the long weekend and did so with a pen and notepad by my side at all times as I carried them all around the house from room to room. I couldn’t put it down and I never thought I’d say that about a BEAUTY BOOK.
OK, back story. Many people have been beauty editors at some point in their careers. Deborah Thomas (former AWW ed). Paula Joye (former Madison and Shop Til You Drop Ed-In-Chief). Bronwyn McCahon (Cosmo Ed). Kirstie Clements (Vogue Ed). Me.
But for all the above, the beauty gig was a mere step on the ladder up to being an editor. So when I snatched Zoë from tween mags at age 23 and put her in the beauty chair at Cosmo, I assumed the same would apply. I knew she was super talented and beauty editing is ideal training for wannabe eds.
She had other ideas. When she was first installed there, she knew nothing about beauty. This is not a bad thing. In fact it is a brilliant one because it means if you’re smart (and she is), that you will write your beauty copy and come up with your ideas from your readers’ point of view, not the viewpoint of a jaded beauty pro. Otherwise, beauty features/posts are cliched, cheesy, repetitive and impenetrable. Also bloody dull.
That’s where Zoe’s genius lies. She somehow fell in love with beauty. I urged her not to stay too long at the party and she didn’t – she diversified into writing about relationships and became a prolific, wonderful novel writer – but she is the only beauty journalist I know who can write so engagingly and colloquially and HILARIOUSLY about beauty. Also honestly.
Who else would write a chapter about how she deals with her cold sores which, if you suffer from them or kiss someone who does, is worth the cover price alone.
Ok, the book.
As I read it, here’s what I realised:
Ignore the fact I was a beauty editor. I never wanted to BE one. I just took whatever gig got me a paycheck on a magazine – my dream. I never loved it. But Zoe did. Zoe retained her insatiable curiosity and wonder for lotions and potions and magic tricks and has finally put it all together in this book.
And most of us don’t actually know stuff. We wing it. And we get stuck doing the same thing to our face and hair. Until we are Goldie Hawn.
As I write this, Lana is sitting across from me, reading the copy I just gave her for her birthday. She too has a pen and paper and is making notes of products to buy and every minute or so, she laughs out loud. Every five minutes or so, she hands the book over to Rick who reads the bit she’s pointing to and also laughs out loud.
Now Rick wants to read the book when Lana is finished and HE’S A BOY. It’s that good.
Zoe’s mission is to give women the tips and tricks and tools to feel more confident. To try new things in non-scary ways that will make us look as good as we possibly can.
For instance, the morning after I’d finished Amazing Face, I just did a couple of her tricks – one with illuminator and concealer (which I’ve apparently been doing all wrong FOR YEARS) and another with blush and bronzer (ditto). Took 2 minutes. Didn’t have to buy anything new.
And I walk into the office and Nicky and Lana and Nat (Rick didn’t notice, see above point about him being a boy) all looked up and they go “Hey, hey! What’s with you! Your make-up! You look 10 years younger!” and I’m not exaggerating one bit and no they don’t say that because I pay them because I pay them every day and they’ve never said that before.
So. Buy the book here. Read the book. Tell your friends.

Thanks for this article.
I wouldn’t have discovered Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion without this.
It’s amazing.

Zoe’s book sounds absoultely amazing, so I took your advice and just bought it. Thanks!

Ok, I finally caved. Since I’ve never been taught the art of makeup, and admittedly have no idea when it comes to such things, I thought maybe this book could help me out… and since you’ve raved about it consistently, I took the plunge and purchased.
I am halfway through and only bought it yesterday. There are so many post it notes sticking out the sides that it is ridiculous. I’ve got to say, this book is awesome (although I don’t think my bank account will agree once I splurge on my new makeup!)
loading...
I LOOOOVE Amazing Face, I bought one for myself, my best friend and my mum. I went to Pricline and splurged today, I totally revamped my makeup. Thank you Zoe Foster you have saved me from my uninformed self! And thank you Mia for introducing me to my new girl crush.
loading...
I have bought the book and love it! Is that definitely a ‘bloom’ cream blush Zoe is holding towards the end or a ‘becca’ cream blush? It doesn’t look like the bloom packaging. It doesn’t really get talked about. Trying to find a good cream blush.

Zoe Foster has it all….Gorgeous, smart and a hot and funny boyfriend! Damn her!
loading...
I am interested in buying Zoe’s book, but I prefer to use cosmetics that don’t contain chemicals or harsh additives. Does the book recommend brands of this nature? Can I apply her principles to products that are chemical free?
loading...
got it today and I LOVE IT
have already bought and applied serum Zoe
hope you’re proud!!

I just finished Amazing Face and I loved it! Loooooved it! I have never really known what I’m doing make up/skin care wise, and now I feel like a beauty GENIUS
Thank you Zoe! (and Mr Meowburt).

How do I choose the covergirl concealer colour? I have olive but pale skin…

Hi Zoe and Mia
I LOVED this interview so down to earth and helpful – there are so many products out there and this helped make some sense of them all.
Now 2 things – what about an interview about skincare including tips for older (over 40) year olds (ahem) AND where did Zoe get her cute as a button outfit?
THANK YOU xx

OMG – I love love love this book only have had it in my hot hands for less than 24 hours but want to tell everyone about it.
I managed to get one copy that QBD at Pacific Fair Gold Coast had. I like others sat down with my pen and paper and had to continually go into the bathroom to check MY actual stash !! I couldn’t have the bag in front of me as little miss 2 would want to share !!
I Even tried a few tricks like the illuminator this morning and I must admit I looked better and felt better…. I used to put this on all over my face and wondered why I looked all sparkly but by applying to the correct place instant success !! Thank you for sharing !! This book is what I was looking for two years ago.
I am now trying to locate some of the items on-line as like other busy people do not have time to go hunting. if anyone can help me out with a website that I can combine a few brands I would be interested.

Priceline is your best bet. They have stacks. Make sure you take a list!

FINALLY got to watch the video in this post and I loved it! I will be buying some of these products now. Zoe, you should get commission!

Hey Mia & Zoe,
Thanks for posting this link to booktopia…. i love timesavers like this!
Have bought Zoe’s book. Now off to find pretty notebook and pen to go with it for my notes!
YAY
loading...
Tried to buy the book at Sydney & Melbourne airports today. Failed
Will try again on weekend.
loading...
Sailorgal, it might not be at airports, because its odd (“awesome”) size won’t fit onto their shelves…
Try your local bookseller… or DJs or Dymocks or Booktopia or Target or Kmart but NOT Windscreens O’Brien, because you will not find it.
Also: Thank you for searching! I hope you find it soon.

Hey everyone? THANK YOU. Your excitement and kindness and lovely words sure do make a lady’s day. Week. Month. Year.
And just so we’re all clear, this kind of post and these kind of comments are not normal or usual, and I am beside myself (awkward, since the chair is really only big enough for one) with glee and gratitude at having The Mia Freedman write these exceptionally generous and lovely things about me and my book. It means a (parking) lot to me. I am one lucky, lucky little squid.
Appreciative and Extremely Flattered,
Aus.

Got me the book yesterday Zoe- thanks to my husband, who met you at David Jones yesterday. He apparently asked you a question about beauty tips for men? As a result, he’s now all about “night creams”… even though before, the thought made him pull a face. Haha. Loving your book! x

mia – you are so beautiful – please do more videos. i love the girly nature of the discussion and have requested that our local library buy a copy.

I bought the Covergirl & Olay Simply Ageless Eye concealer on a whim from a supermarket chuck-out (damaged packaging) for $7.
I didn’t know what I was going to do with it yet, but it looked interesting – the story of my beauty bargain-purchasing life!!! “Hmmm… not sure if I need this, but it’s $10 off.. BARGAIN!”
I read Zoe’s post (on Primped I think?) about a week later, and promptly dug it out of the bathroom drawer.
“Ooh…. that cheap stuff I bought is on Zoe’s list… weeeee!!”
And you know what? This stuff rocks! No more ’30-something burning the candle at both ends look’ going on with my eyes now.
Bless your moustache-lovin’ socks Zoe! xx

Went to Zoe’s launch tonight and wow she really is just the sweetest thing! Absolutely gorgeous and fun, I officially have a girl crush
loading...
I popped into her Q and A at Dymocks after work too Emma, wasn’t she just too cute! It was lovely to see how proud she was of her work, and how appreciative and gracious she was to her audience. And I wanted to steal that Camilla and Marc dress off her back so badly (another of those potent cocktails mixed with my not yet feed tummy may have just about given me the moxie to do it too…!)
loading...
Weren’t those cocktails yummy? I had to restrain myself from having another… and definitely agree, that dress…wow! Loved it!
loading...
I. Love. Her. MOOOOORE!

Can’t wait for the rest of these videos. Zoe Foster is JESUS. ARHHHHHHHHH too perfect!

Just bought EL tinted daywear and the Kevin Auc tubular mascara – LOVE IT. AWESOME. good work ladies.
Also asked re Tom Ford Ginger Fawn – but no luck in DJ’s.
I cant believe I am unable to make the launch tomorrow at DJ’s in Melb – my daughter’s nap time…. so BUMMED. I might have to convince grandma to babysit…. fingers crossed.

Hoping someone might know, but is Rose Hip oil ok to put on ‘active’ pimples or only the scars? Also, does it help prevent pimples?
loading...
Hi Anon, Rosehip oil won’t do anything to prevent pimple scars ( you should check out primped.com.au for heaps of info on this). I wouldn’t put it on an active pimple, put something more drying (like a dab of toothpaste). Rosehip oil nourishes your skin.
loading...
Thanks for the tip
so would you think a dab or toothpaste or toner on the active pimples, and rosehip oil around them on the rest of the face would be ok? I just love using Rosehip oil but don’t want to if it is causing pimples….
loading...
yup, give that a go xx

I have a couple of Q’s..there was a dermatologist on the Today show a few months ago talking about beauty myths and in particular he said a recent study showed that you only need to moisturise the parts of your body that are prone to be dry. So basically, we don’t need to do a daily moisturiser – Zoe or Mia is this true?
Also, regarding your recommendation for waterproof mascara – some beauty therapists have told me not to use waterproof as it is quite damaging to your lashes as they fall out when you wash it off. Would this problem only be for non-tubular mascara’s?
Thanks!

I have never been interested in beauty books in the past, nor have I really experimented with too many brands. I just have a few tried and true ones that have never let me down. Given the enthusiasm of the responses about this book, I am going to have to go out and buy it!
I recently discovered a gorgeous brand of pretty completely natural skincare products for little girls. Goats milk soaps, natural clay soaps, bath bombs completely natural skincare products and chemical free play makeup sticks! The product range is called Miss Kate http://www.misskate.com and while I think they are only available in Brisbane they are in the midst of setting up an online store. They have just started a facebook page so I have signed up to that – hopefully they will let me know when they are open for business. My friend’s daughters adore it and my girls are completely envious. No more cr*p from China for our kids skin.
I also like the new McArthur range, my daughter has dry skin and the paw paw in the cream seems to really make a difference.
Love the MAC foundations as well. They give a natural shimmer/glow that others don’t.
loading...
We have the Miss Kate products at a little boutique near us in Bulimba (Brisbane). I love that they are completely natural and made in Australia. I especially love the suncream (outdoor cream). I have put all the kindy mums onto it.
loading...
I love Zoe… I work in the makeup biz and she definitely knows her stuff.
Does anybody know whether is Tom Ford available in Australia yet? I haven’t seen it anywhere but I’d love to try it. His collection for Estee Lauder was beautiful.
Off to buy some mousse and wool shake now… and Zoe’s book!
loading...
in melb you can get from dj’s in the city

I have Zoe’s book out from the library at the moment. I must have been the first person to have it on hold. I devoured it on Saturday night while the bf was at a going away party (I couldn’t go, I was at home with Zoe!).
I think that everypage should be waterproofed and stain proofed and Zoe should create a version we can stick on our bathroom walls and read as we do make up – genius!
Meanwhile, I know that you have to get matched for foundation and skin matched, etc. However, I HATE going into department stores and make up stores. The girls are always so darn pushy with the products and I feel an obligation to buy, when REALLY, all I want to do is get a product I like, and then go and buy it online for much much cheaper. stingy. I know.
loading...
You’re not the only one… I put it on hold over the weekend and should get it this week! It sold out online so this was my temporary fix option until it comes back into stock so I can buy it.
I totally agree about the foundation and department/makeup stores. I feel this way when I go to Napoleon and I am a bit daunted to go into David Jones/Myer because I keep feeling like they are looking at my skin thinking “wow that girl needs a facial pronto”
but I’ll have to go into Estee Lauder to get that tinted moisturiser! it sounds heavenly…
loading...
yeah that tinted moisturiser is not on strawberry net. Disappointed, I might have to go into a store and talk to shop assistants and pay full retail price!!!
I know Zoe recommends cheaper products in the book, but I’d really like to see a post on a how to and recommended products for make up and skin care – all supermarket and chemist brands, like from start to finish, cleansing, toning all the way through to the final touches on your mascara.
Because honestly, I have expensive (but amazing) hair and shoes. So I wear maybelline, and don’t really want to spend more than $30 on foundation!
loading...
Awesome video!! These days are dust, where my mates and I would share our tips.. This is why ‘the hawn’ look should be something to be scared of.. Interestingly glanced throughy collection of fb photo’s and my hair changes regularly but makeup stays the same.. Wrinkles they’re ok, my Arbonne is looking after those..
loading...
Just whipped out for my morning coffee and somehow ended up back home with a styling brush and Garnier gradual tanner. The power of the Zoe! Cheap as from my local chemist, have a few more items to tick off my list now too… Thank you for a great post, can’t wait to get my hot little mitts on the book!
loading...
Have sent my husband off to buy me a copy. Such a shame I can’t waddle along to the in-store. Baby’s coming in less than a week and this book will give me 6 months to mentally plan my fresh-faced summer look (by the time I can fathom leaving the house with 2 little ones, and makeup!) Thanks gals x

As someone who has all-year round dry skin, I cannot live without Elizabeth Arden’s tinted Lip Protectant Sticks in my handbag – I have one in each bag so I am never without!

This isn’t about a beauty product…but as a product that does what it’s meant to do, it really is worth a mention.
McArthur Natural Products “Complete Skincare Cream” featured on TT a few months back, claimed to be the greatest cure-all of all time. Only being available through mail order, I placed my order and waited two months for it to arrive.
I have been having trouble with my knees for yonks. Of course, I live in a house with numerous sets of stairs. Walking was painful enough, but climbing the stairs was a new experience in pain. Bending down to get to the lower shelves in the kitchen was a chore within itself. Trying to get upright again was near impossible without help. Once I spent the afternoon on the floor waiting for someone to call in a help me to my feet.
Well…I tried the cream. Rubbing it furiously onto my knees, I felt a slight tingle. Within five to ten minutes I was relatively pain free. Two weeks later, I can tackle the stairs with ease. Walking is not painful. It still takes me a little time to search those lower shelves, but getting up is no longer as difficult as it once was. This cream is bloody brilliant !
McArthur also does a special soap and a paw-paw facial cream. My face is just so luxuriantly smooth and I can walk without pain ! Life is good !
loading...
Hi Bradley
I have heaps of problems with my knees, so I am very interested in the McArthur products. For your knees do you use both the skincare cream and the special soap, or just the cream?
loading...
I’m just using the skincare cream at the moment. It really is everything that I say it is, and a bag of chips ! Use it once and you’ll always use it. The only downside is that because the product is so natural, it has a relatively short shelf life so you don’t order three or four bottles of the product at once. But seriously, whatever you do…just order some.
I haven’t used the soap yet. Apparently there are no nasty bits in it to cause skin irritations. Another highly natural product.

Fishpond.com.au have copies of Amazing Face but their site is currently down!

Ok I have a quick question..
the 11. Bobbi Brown nude make-up palette, when I click online to the bobbi brown website it’s an empty nude palette and you have to custom fill the eyeshadows, blush or lipgloss.
The one in the vid was full… just wondering what these shades were? I think you also mentioned it wasn’t out till July so should I wait for this?
thanks….
loading...
Hey Rose,
The one featured in the video is the sand palette from Bobbi Brown due out in July – I’d wait a week or so for it – it’s a pretty good one.
loading...
thanks Nicki!
loading...
the palettes are usually only limited edition, so i would wait til July or ask at a bobbi brown counter. they had an amazing nude palette a few years ago, it hasn’t been available for a while so hopefully they are bringing it back!
loading...
thanks Kylie, I’ll be waiting for the sand palette from Bobbi Brown.
So-freaking-excited!! Don’t think I can wait…. so I will be buying the Tom Ford lippy
loading...
Love these vids! They brighten up my day… I definitely have a long list now.
Zoe loves the bobbi brown products and I need some new eyeshadows soon so I’m going to buy the palate I think. Here’s hoping it doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg.
The lipstick is cool too! I don’t know if I can pull off the colour you have to have a certain skin tone.
I wonder what foundation Zoe uses she always looks so fresh faced! The tinted moisturiser looks like a good investment.
I’m so glad it’s payday today………..:)
loading...
Hi Rose, and thank you for your incredible enthusiasm. I should very much like to keep you in my pocket to pep me up at all times.
I use a few foundations at present (as well as tinted moisturiser on non-fancy pants beauty editor days):
1. DermaMinerals Breathable Coverage SPF 30 (excellent semi-matte finish and full sun protection)
2. Bobbi Brown Luminous Foundation (very sheer and good layered twice for dewy skin that lasts)
3. MNY Mineral Power (terrific entry level mineral liquid foundation that’s a great price)
I do naaae like powder but sometimes will loosely dust it over my t-zone to set my face. How outrageous! Mostly I will just keep a foundation stick (they generally matte) in my bag for touch-ups instead. Like Beccas.
Zo!
loading...
Rose – Zoe also told me about a Shiseido stick foundation which I bought. If you can’t find the Becca one.
loading...
Thanks Mia – I’ll make a note of this one too!
loading...
Aww thanks heaps for replying Zo! You made my day
I use the Invisible Zinc tinted moisturiser from your recommendation on Primped. I love it! It makes my skin feel so healthy and dewy.
I need to buy a new foundation so I’ll be making notes of these ones next time I go shopping!
Thank YOU for making me fall in love with beauty all over again! x
loading...
Ok Mia.
All this REEKS of helping out a friend – and makes me feel slightly uncomfortable. Is this Zoe girl really a guru? Or just a mate your helping out (even if you are quite open about knowing her..)
Until I realised the advice, and pretty much Zoe, IS FUCKING AWESOME.
Just ordered online some of this Redken Woolspray stuff and some volume mousse.
The book is on the birthday list.
It don’t matter if your mates or not, Zoe has the goods!
loading...
Mia, I’ve just ordered a copy from Booktopia – I hope you get a comission from them… you’d make a fortune from the number of books you’ve recommended that I’ve bought alone! I’ve never been disappointed though! Thanks!
loading...
well poo both book depository and booktopia are out of stock.
is this good news zoe? they didnt anticipate enough of a print run?
loading...
It’s kind of bad in that people can’t get their little paws on it, but kind of GREAT because lots of other (faster) people DO have their paws on it.
(But then probably they realised paws are no good for turning pages, so they went back to using hands instead.)
Booktopia will order more. My mafia friends will see to it.
loading...
Well that was the nicest 15 mins ever!
I am going to trot my little socks over to book depository and order this henceforth!
Love your work and style and attitude so much Zoe – somehow you manage to take the feminist issues of beauty seriously, while also showing women how to play with their look and makeup in a light hearted way, while still somehow managing to make women feel as beautiful as they possibly can.
You are an absolute gem. Every trick i try of yours i love and it works.
Im loving your hair – and face – and general everything!
PS – please can we have meowbert feature a bit next time?
PPS loved that background giggle when mia said the thing about leaving your eyebrows all natural and hairy. too funny.
PPPS please may we have one of these each week?
PPPPS now i just have to wait a week for my amazing face to arrive…
oh! will you be doing any signings zoe? i would embarass myself by going all gushy and showing you my face with 78 of your makeup tricks all at once, but now doesnt that sound like fun?

Knew this wonder-book was coming out while I’m away so I have ordered it online. I expect it to be sitting in my room when I get back. Or there will be trouble. Can’t wait to read it! Love Zoe!

Love her so much, can not wait to get my hot little hands on this book!

Dear Zoe, (because I’m hoping she’ll come back for a peek). I (devastatingly) can’t make any of your instores. Can you also post when you’ll be sneaking around bookstores rearranging displays to put yours first so I can run into you and beg you for foundation help. BEG! i need help. Every counter I’ve gone to, i get a different colour. sigh.
am off to purchase this book tomorrow! great vid

Zoe! I see you are reading and replying. I can’t find your book ANYWHERE! I live in Annandale and have been to Dymocks, online (feckin sold out), and other assorted bookshops. The Broadway & Syd dymocks told me that they won’t start selling it to next week.
BUT I NEED TO HAVE AN AMAZING FACE THIS WEEEK! Too shouty? soz
loading...
I’m not really into makeup, I’ve kind of found my brands and stick to the basics. But….is it ok to want to buy this book because it looks pretty? I really like the cover!
loading...
Cami – here’s the thing: I too thought I’d found my brands and stuck to the basics. UNTIL…..
It’s not just pretty but funny too. A great read and I cannot believe I’m saying that about a beauty book…..
loading...
I have had the good fortune of meeting Zoe and she is just as lovely, funny and warm in person.
I am definitely buying Amazing Face – are there any tips from Meowbert’s blog ‘bertybeauty’? (die hard fan, right here)
loading...
PS – Zoe if you’re reading this please include Perth in your next launch….. all the Perth Primpers are so sad that you’re not coming this time!
loading...
Bo, I bloody will. I promise. And Adelaide.
I’m sorry I didn’t make it over this time, you gorgeous, supportive little rascals.
I expect this earns me a C- at best.
(DAMMIT! Now dad will never let me go to summer camp!!!!)

It’s funny she mentioned it, I get terrible pigment when I’m pregnant so I finally bit the bullet and got laser treatment on it at Laser By Sia. I have to say, it hurt at the time, but wow, my skin looks fekking amazing now. They recommended more than one treatment, but I’m so delighted with the result of just one! I’ll never bother with a lightening cream ever again.
Will totally go out and get Zoe’s book too, looks very helpful! I’m fairly clueless when it comes to makeup, so looking forward to learning something
loading...
Yay, can’t wait for more vids! I love Zoe’s hair in this. Kind of Alexa Chung-y.
I’m a student and I can’t afford a lot of the products Zoe recommends (Bobbi Brown, Ultraceauticals, the list goes on!), nor do I wear make-up on a daily basis, but I always devour her blog posts! All of my favourite products are ones she’s recommended – rosehip oil, seasalt spray, bloom cream blush and hissyfit tinted moisturiser (exxy but worth it when it goes on sale!). She convinced me that I can rock an orange lip (and trust me, I CAN and it is fricken AWESOME) and what SPF 30+ actually MEANS. And now I get my eyebrows shaped and tinted and always walk out of the salon feeling all Elizabeth Taylor-y. Almost as sassy as after I get my hair cut! She rocks. I’m bummed I won’t be in Brissie for her in-store (miss it by a day!) but I’m looking forward to the book anyway!
loading...
An orange lip?! Wow!
loading...
I got onto this one, too.
Revlon do a great creamy lip colour (think it’s called Coral) and it’s one that Zoe recommends.
