Eh, I’m struggling to see how #3 would be flattering on anyone. I’m assuming that model has a waist of some description, not that you can see it in that dress. I’m a maxi fan in general but that one is just horrible. The shape, the weird pattern, the transparent panels. Awful.
I love the shape of #2 though. Really nice over the shoulders and love the nipped-in waist. I wish I could find one like that…you know, for NOT $240! I’d love a cotton solid or stripe in that kind of shape.
It is really hard for someone to pull off a maci dress -I really don’t think they’re flattering on a woman’s figure, especially for 5″2 shorties like me!
Oh No YoungVintage thats not the case! I am only that height and for the first time in my life (I am 36) I have discovered the maxi!!
Have always thought I am too short and therfore the maxi makes us shorties look shorter and dumpy.
Here are my personal hot tips I hope work for you and others – material! material! material! Don’t choose cotton….underwear yes, maxi dress no! You need weight in the material so it drops and holds that shape. Size – go a size shorter. Its a maxi dress god damn it, so as long as it fits you across the boobs and arms, get a size smaller so it doesn’t add that glowing ‘pregnancy’ look as a non-pregnant person you don’t want! Get it taken up (yep, they don’t make petite versions) so that the hem is just sitting on top of your feet. That way you can wear flats or heels and not lose the flow.
Now further to this, I have discovered the best maxi’s that suit all the above criteria can be found at wwww.boohoo.com. Go the bandeau/strapless versions as its elasticated across your boobs (I am a DD so its perfect for small and big) and again a size smaller should drop and fall nicely on your body. I’ll see if I can upload a pic of one. There are heaps of design and they are flattering. I have literally just dropped off 6, yep 6! to an alteration place to be taken up about 17 inches….once I am onto a good thing I am guilty of buying in mutliple colours/patterns! GOOD LUCK
When pregnant I just bought normal maxi dresses in a size or two up. I also bought a couple of stretchy skirts from cotton on etc and then wore them with those floaty A-line singlet tops. Way cheaper then maternity clothes…. although, if looking for specific maternity stuff, ASOS does a good, reasonably priced range
After two winter pregnancies, I’m going maxi all the way with this one. Metalicus dresses are great because they’re so stretchy but keep their shape – also means you can yank the neckline down to breastfeed after. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I also love the (non-maternity) maxi dress I got from Target for $23. My advice would be to find maxi dresses that come in again a little under your bump (stretch fabric for eg.), otherwise you get the “dalek” look (sorry, can’t think of any other way to describe it!). I’ve also got a couple of maxi skirts from queenbee – I’ll be able to keep wearing them with breastfeeding tops after the birth.
Although I think other people look lovely in maxi dresses I have never been able to wear them. I just feel too uncomfortable. What is all this fabric doing on my legs? How am I meant to ride a bike in this dress? What happens if I need to climb a tree to save a cat? It will get snagged. What happens if I need to break out my ninja skills and crawl through an air vent? Not conducive to crawling like a ninja AT ALL. The only up side I can see is that if there is a failed assasination attempt by a government agency and I find myself with a bullet wound I should be able to use the extra fabric as makeshift bandages to stem the bleeding until I can I pick the bullet fragments out with a hunting knife and sterilise the area with a bottle of whisky.
And this is why I have so many dramas getting dressed in the morning.
I so hear you on that one. Tight jeans: what if Jack Bauer comes to my rescue from terrorists and we need to run? I won’t impress Jack if I can’t run like the wind, and as much as I like him to carry me out of harm’s way, he seems to dig women who can take care of themselves.
Ditto high heels.
Ditto short skirts.
It all goes back to my WWJBD bracelet: What Would Jack Bauer Do?
I have DD/Es and have a maxi that I like, but it took me ages to find it. It’s plain black, and has a crossover V-neck and little sleeves. I am tall, though.
I liked it so much I got 2!
They’re definitely not generally designed for girls with boobs, and strapless is just wrong for many, many people. Mine is quite figure hugging, but flarey in the skirt bit. It’s jersey (I think – tshirt materially stuff) and has a belt.
yes. maxi dresses suit a very small minority. long in general should be only for the very tall and slender. however… i’m all for wearing clothes that are comfortable but not necessarily the most flattering choice…

maxi dress during pregnancy…thoughts? I’m trying to figure out what to wear on hot days other than very unflattering shorts.

Soon Maternity has some great options for Christmas – I think the ‘Jess Gathered Maternity Dress’ in coral is particularly cute! http://www.mamamia.com.au/shop/brands/soon-maternity-en.html

Target had nice ones in their maternity section when I was pregnant, dressy and not so dressy.

Too funny, I hate the flowy fabric around my legs too. I had a long flowy skirt years ago, wore it once and hated it.
Also agree that they only look good on tall slim girls.

Most flattering?
On tall, slim, small busted women, sure.
But they can make shorter woman look stumpy and big busted ladies look all chest.

Totally agree – even the model in photo #4 is struggling to make the dress on her not look like an oversized apron/tablecloth.
Plus anything that is strapless unless you are an A cup is madly unflattering. I don’t think this is one of Jennifer A’s best looks myself.

This is kind of similar to the one I’m talking about, but mine has a deeper neckline and small cap sleeves.
