meaning of names The meaning of names. Whats your story? By LUCY ORMONDE

Please don’t share the following information with my mother….

There’s a Martin Boyd book sitting on my bookshelf. It’s been sitting there for well over a decade now. Mum gave it to me for a birthday sometime during high school and told me I’m named after the protagonist – Lucinda Brayford.

The thing is,  I judge books by their covers and Lucinda? She looks like the kind of book that inspires naps.

So I’ve never actually read it…. sorry mum.

I shared this story with friends last weekend as they were browsing through the bookshelves in my room. It got us talking about the name question. The question that everyone has an answer for – if not a hilarious story.

Oprah 290x385 The meaning of names. Whats your story?

Orpah. Better known as Oprah.

Take Oprah as an example. If someone asked her why her name is what it is, she’d have to tell them the story of the birth certificate which was made in 26 BSC (Before Spell Check). You see, she was intended to be named Orpah until there was a little error in the paperwork. And the error stuck.

Then there’s my friend Sophia (I’m trying to say this as if it naturally flows on from my other buddy Oprah). Named as such because her parents saw a Sophia Loren film in the early days of their relationship.

My Dad is Benedict – named after Prime Minister Chifley, not the eggs.  Another friend is Jasmine – born in Spring when the jasmine is blooming. Miriam was named after her great aunt. Her mum Kay was only given three letters, so her friends couldn’t give her a shortened nickname.

When I took the question of names to Twitter, Georgie told me she was named after a student in her mum’s Grade Three class. Patricia was born on St Patrick’s Day. And Nancy was named after Bill’s lover in the 1968 film version of Oliver. (“I’m also a redhead but I don’t dance on tables”)

There were the family names – “there has always been a Katherine in my mum’s family” – and then there were the more creative names. “I know someone called Lezah because her mother was Hazel,” one Twitter user told me. “My mother also went to school with a Cazna – Anzac backwards.”

I assume a similar logic went into the naming of my colleague Lana.

“My parents always assumed I’d be anal,” she said.

What’s the meaning behind your name? If you have kids, what about their names?

My name was meant to be Kelly. The week before I was born, new people moved into the house next door and had a cat called Kelly who had no teeth.
Mum didn’t have another name. As I was being born (in a Catholic hospital), the nurse said that I was born as the Angelus bells were ringing, so Angela I became (or Ange, Angie, Angelina or Angelika – during my years of lGerman in high school). Mum chose Marie for my middle name, but Dad wrote Maria on my birth certificate. An Irish/Australian Angela Maria – not one bit of Italian in me!

We named our daughter Annie after my much loved Nanna.

My parents named me Dale after one of Dad’s ex-flings. Yep. Bit awkward.

Funnily enough, my nickname is Willy… Random.

Which just about accurately describes my parents.

    Awkward and random.

My ‘name’ story should become a law! No child should ever be given two middle names!!! I was given two and it is the most annoying thing! No paperwork ever gives you enough space to write both, you try to drop the second one, but it bites you on the arse when doing ‘legal’ stuff, people always make comment on the fact that they rhyme, cringe, then ask me why I have two middle names…ummm because my parents are crazy!
Please pregnant people reading this – NEVER give your child two middle names! Or be prepared to pay for counselling ;)

We named our daughter Airlia which means ethereal. It is an ancient greek name, and when i was pregnant (unplanned) my (greek) grandmother fell ill. We were sure mine and my sisters pregnancies helped pull her through….so when my daughter was born she was Airlia and her middle name Eve which is the anglicised version of my grandmother’s name.

I am adopted. According to my original birth certificate, my birth mother named me Laura Mary. My adoptive parents had apparently thought of Pamela (no offence to Pams out there – but yuk!!) :P
They settled on Katrina Mary (from St Catherine). I have been through a few versions of that name: dad always called me Katrina when he was cross, and that is on official docs; I started out as Katy, and got bored of that after high school so now I am Kate. I like it! and my boys are good, strong (easy to spell) names too: David, Benjamin Samuel and Patrick.

I was adopted too and when I met my birth mum I asked about the wonderful “Nancy” name on my cert. She laughed and said she didn’t call me such a silly name – she had named me Tracey! Neither is on my list and I’m glad I got the traditional Ruth from my adopted parents.

I was apparently named after Eliza Fraser, the woman who Fraser Island was named after. My mum read a book about her while she was pregnant with me & decided that was my name. If I were born a boy, I would have been Royce after Royce Simmons, a footy player.

My daughter’s name is Maddison Jean & she has my middle name. It means child of Matthew and guess what my hubby’s name is & who named her!! I wanted Amelia for her.

My son’s name is Reece Matthew. He was meant to be Bryce until 4 days before he was born, Matthew is again, because of my hubby.

I am currently pregnant with #3 and am at a total loss as to what we will go with, either way. Every name I like is either far too common now or we know people who are or have kids with the names. I like traditional but uncommon names. I would love to have Jesse for a boy but I think we will be having a girl, and I’m not too fussed on Jessie as a girl!! Haha!

  11. Reannon

I’m named after the Fleetwood Mac song ” Rhiannon”, mum just thought she’d make having an unusual name easier by spelling it the way it is pronounced- Re-an-non. It didn’t help, it made things worse!
My sister jemmima was named after a character on the Tv show ” Danile Boon”.
My brother Robert was originally named ” Elijah” but when my dad went to do his birth certificate he changed it to Robert because that was his dad’s name & his middle name.
My brother Koby was named ” Toby” but my dad had stroke & his speech was badly effected so when he called the family to tell them my brother had been born they all thought he said Koby & that stuck.
My sister Marikki was named after someone I done dancing with when I was 4- there is 9 yrs difference between us so obviously mum really liked that name.
My brother Rhys was given his name purely because mum liked it.
My son was named Zane after we couldn’t agree on a name & each put 2 names in a hat 2 weeks before he was born. Zane was not one of my names but I agreed to the rules of the hat game…..

But the Flintstones was playing on tv and she kept insisting – apparently to the point of yelling – that I was going to be named Pebbles. My father and the others in the room realised how hopped up she was and thankfully ignored her completely. So he picked a very unique name out of the blue, including with a hyphen, and that’s what I ended up with. I often wonder if he had an old flame with the same name as mine. Lucy I love your name! In fact, its what I called my daughter. I have always loved it since reading A Tale Of Two Cities in high school. Lucie Manette is the main character. I didn’t use the French selling because I didn’t want her to have to spell out her name a hundred times a day, but the inspiration was there. Lucy means light, and the character was known as the Golden Thread – she brought her family together in a time of dire crisis. She is the main protagonist in the story, but often her influence is actually indirect – she effects people’s actions because of the love and respect they feel for her, not because she herself does anything heroic. My daughter was a surprise/unplanned pregnancy and was in hospital for four months after her birth. She fought so hard and is remarkable. I think she has brought a lot of light to our family, and in many ways is the thread that pulls us together, much like Lucie Manette. I can only hope she has the same loving characteristics that endear her to her family and friends as she grows up, (she’s only 1).

As for my son, he is a Lachlan, so named because we couldn’t agree on a name and decided to go through the wallabies line up until we found one we liked. We got all the way to No. 14, Lachie Turner, before we had a consensus. I suppose Tatafu and Sekope just didn’t have the right ring to them!

I actually got a second hand name. My mother’s mother was Russian so she wanted one of her daughters to have a Russian name. She was going to call my older sister Larissa but she didn’t look like one so I got it. Still, it’s better than the alternative, if my twin and I had been boys my parents were apparently going to call us Matthew and Patrick. Pretty sure being Matt & Pat would have worn off quite quickly :D

My husband and son are Matthew and Patrick and one of the names I liked for our daughter was Madeleine. Then realised we’d have Matty, Paddy, and Maddy! I have a hard enough time getting an answer from anyone let alone if they all had the same name!

  38. Myvawny

My name is a variant on the Welsh name Myfanwy….my mother was at a dinner party and a friend of a friend had just had a daughter called Myfanwy, and Mum fell in love with the name (who knows why….) Mum being dyslexic and having a tendency to mix up names, she promptly forgot the correct pronunciation and spelling and hence I ended up with Myvawny! I’ve since heard that the letter ‘v’ doesn’t exist in the Welsh alphabet, so saying my name is Welsh isn’t actually true. Oh well. Thanks Mum.

I would have been Myfanwy if Dad had had his way. Mum won. I do wonder what it would be like to have such a unique name :)

Lots of questions about spelling and origin, having to be fairly vigilant about what you write on the Internet (virtually everything you find on Google searching ‘Myvawny’ is me) and occasionally making up a name to give the barista as you can’t be bothered going through the spelling/mispronunciation drama….I quite like it though, I’m sure I would freak out if I ever met someone with the same name!

We all have name associations, that name you can’t stand because of a particular person you loathed. Well my Mum was a primary school teacher so by the time they had me, she had 12 or so years of teaching 30+ kids a year and had a huge list of no, no names. Add to the mix my grandmother who was desperate to have a grandchild named after her and my parents were in all sorts of strife.

They ended up with Lisa because it wasn’t very common in the late 70′s and if you reoganise the letters in Ilse (my grandmother’s name) you almost get Lisa so it won on all counts.

They however point out that they got the inspiration from two songs with Lisa in the title – “Sad Lisa” by Cat Stephens and “Lisa Listen To Me” by Blood, Sweat and Tears. Both songs are about sad, confused women called Lisa. I have always found it amusing that my parents saw that as a good omen for a name!

  42. Meltie

Lucy, I LOVE your name – if I were to have a daughter I would call her Lucinda!

My name is Melanie (Greek for black – not that i am Greek, but just fyi :) )
I was named after the 60s/70′s folk singer Melanie Safka. Funnily enough we both have long straight dark hair and chocolate eyes…and I can sing! It was my Dad’s wish and I’m pretty pleased with it really.

My son’s first name is Lewis after my step-dad’s middle name which was also his mother’s maiden name. I liked it from way before I knew this (loved Jerry Lewis) and this extra info clinched it for me/us!

My second son’t name is Archer and it was just a name that was on our ‘shortlist’ but we were undecided. When things got veery messy during his birth, we needed an anaesthetist whose surname was Archer – hence the decision being made. That epidural must have been mighty powerful! Ha ha!

I love having a story behind a name – and I love to hear about others’ too. Great post Lucy!

You should watch the animated series, ‘Archer’. It’s awesome!!
Although I’m not sure if you’ll want the main character as a namesake for your son :)

My name is also Lucinda, which I adore. If you do ever have a girl, just thought I’d add a bit more to the story behind the name for you.

Lucinda (a vairant of Lucy, Lucille etc) means “bringer of light”. However, it is a very Australian name – the Australian Constitution was written on the boat the “Lucinda” as it cruised the Murray-Darling. That boat ran aground (at a different time) in north Queensland – the town “Lucinda” is named becuase of this. This town has the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere (you can see the curvature of the Earth), and I’m often told that there is good fishing there!

Lucy, my parents were also inspired by a book (actually the telemovie made from the book) “Centennial” by James A Mitchener. I’m the same as you – I haven’t read it yet either! I have read one other Mitchener book, and loved it, so I really should get around to reading this one. Maybe if Mum bought me a copy ….

I called my daughter Lucinda too. I have just always though it was a beautiful name. We call ours Lulu. Great to hear some history, I had no idea the constitution was written on the Lucinda.

Glad to hear that I’ve passed on some information to another Lucinda! I usually get Lu or Luc, occasionally Lucy but I only get Lulu from one American friend who says it as a bit of a joke. But I think that is because I’m 6″2, so the girly names don’t really suit me!
Quentin Bryce also has a grand-daughter called Lucinda – there aren’t many of us around, so I seem to notice them all!

My name is Melanie too, but I’m known everywhere by everyone as Mel (super common!), so much so that our groomsman didn’t know which Mel I was! A kind friend tells people I’m the only ‘real’ Mel as Melissa and Melinda have more of a ‘Mah’ sound at the beginning…anyhow! It was my dad’s choice too as my mum felt sure she was having a boy and made a deal with dad that he could name a girl if she got to name the boy…backfired! If I was a boy I would have been Adam! Funnily enough, my brother’s name is Aaron, yet another choice by dad (Mum’s deal backfired again) although we always say he couldn’t be bothered thinking about it and just chose the first boys name in the name book!
