Do You Like This Story?

Every so often we run a thank-you note post based on Thx Thx Thx. It’s a website which was started by Leah Dieterich, a creative director and writer in LA. It’s based on the premise of writing thank you notes, and not just to people who had you over for dinner or gave you a birthday present. This is the delightfully quirky catch.

Her ‘About’ page describes it like this:

Leah Dieterich’s mother always told her to write thank you notes. So she does. To everything. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.

There’s always something to be thankful for. From the important things like Songs You’re Embarrassed to Like, and Heavy Eyelids that Tell You When You Need to Sleep, to friends and family, love and loneliness, light and darkness, Leah Dieterich sets out to acknowledge them all. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.

Here are a few examples from her site which she updates daily with a new note:

Thxthxthx

Dear Big Fight With Someone I’m Very Close To,

Thank you for helping me to clear the air with this person and prompting a really constructive conversation about some of the underlying issues that have been niggling between us for a while now. Even though you were extremely unpleasant at the time, we are much closer now because of you.

Love

Mia xxxx

    Dear my iPod,

When I first got you a year ago, I can admit I was annoyed that I can no longer play all the music I store on you on shuffle by album. Because I quite like being able to listen to a whole album, but not having to choose which album I listen to.

It was a good system, I still got the surprise of what album would pop up next, but I could listen to a whole album in a row.

I miss that. But thank you for somehow knowing what song I need to listen to at the moment to suit my mood. I’ve very much appreciated the amount of Wicked soundtrack you’re tossing into the mix today, and it’s made me feel a lot better.

Keep up the good work! I will eventually get around to adding more music to you, I promise.

    Dear Renovation,

Thank you for making us living as a family of four in one room and cooking outside in the coldest wetest winter in 15 years. You have reminded me of the plight of people who are forced out of their homes with nothing but the clothes on their back. I have first world probems.

    Dear boyfriend,

Thanks for saying and doing truly stupid things that drive me absolutely insane such as suggesting shooting a BB gun in our apartment is not an outrageously stupid idea.
Without the moments of madness and anger, I wouldn’t be reminded of how much I love and adore you, despite such suggestions. I know you do try, you just forget sometimes.

    Dear My wonderful Obstetrician/Gynaecologist…

Thank you for your wonderful bedside manner, humour and gentle approach today at my annual pap smear ( which is a very unpleasant check up that I most dreaded). It makes the procedure a lot more bearable for me.

    Dear Commute.

I know that I whinge about your length all the time. I know that I try and shorten you by changing trains three times, or running for the express bus. I know that I have attempted to kick you to the kerb by optimistically leaving real estate brochures where I thought my parents would find them.

But, here’s the truth. Without you, I wouldn’t do any of my uni readings, I wouldn’t have time to listen to my favourite radio shows and I wouldn’t be so damn good at mathematically manipulating 4 numbers to make ten.

So, thank you to every one of your 50-105 minutes, Commute. Thank you :)

    Dear carrot cake,

Thank you for bringing your tasty deliciousness to my tummy. It was a hard slog and I know the oven was not kind to you and burnt your bottom (ouch!) But when I made you again (sans burnt bum) for the second time yesterday, I was happy. Really happy. Not only did I have 2 carrot cakes but I shared you round. And you know what? With extra icing on top, no one noticed your sibling’s burnt bottom!

    Yours,

    Dear ex-husband:

Thank you for your behaviour in court this morning. You treated me with respect as the mother of your child and simply as a human. That’s a long way from where we were a few months ago.

We may not love each other any more but we both love our child. Thank you for showing me that you now understand he isn’t a prize to be won and that by attempting to hurt his mother you’ll only be hurting him as well. It took a big person to admit that in front of a roomful of strangers.

I think you’re going to make someone a very good husband one day and I know you’re going to be a great father if we keep going down the path we’re on now. Thank you.

Dear mega-fat blowfly buzzing around my office,

Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks. I know you’re loud and obnoxious but you just can’t help it. And I’m grateful: because your buzzing has given me a reason to unplug my laptop and go outside – you’ve also reminded me that summer is imminent, so I guess we’ll be spending loads more time together.

    Dear Mum,

I could thank you for so many things – giving birth (I get it now!), a good education and consequently a good job, helping me be a mum and looking after my girl one day a week and travelling a long way to do it.
But today I want to thak you for the tiny pearl of wisdon you gave about a difficult situation at work which was driving me bonkers. “Be dignified and rise above the situation” you said. Wise lady you are one in a million how will I ever repay you?x

    Dear size 16 body,

You and I have had our issues. Yes, you’re 5’9 so you’re on the curvier side as opposed to the grossly fat.

BUT – - Thank you for working as you should. Thank you chunky legs for allowing me to walk down the aisle next month unencumbered, as you were designed (even though I’ll be a rounder bride than the ones on the covers of the magazines.)

Thank you slightly wobbly upper arms for allowing me to touch and grasp all the things I reach for at will.

Body, you may be weighty but you are strong and healthy. One day you will allow me to birth children, and today you allow me to stretch out with my fiancé in bed and then make my own way to uni.

You are a beautiful vessel through which I get to independently participate in life, and I thank you for it.
