The first thing I saw when I turned on my phone with bleary eyes early this morning was a message from my nanny saying she was sick and couldn’t come to work. I was due at the Today Show in less than an hour and it struck me immediately that this was not ideal.
I rely on my nanny on the three days a week she comes. She’s like balm on our family with her supreme organisational skills and masterly ability to love and discipline my children as if they were her own. She also brings her baby daughter to work who we are all besotted with.
Arrangements were hastily made in my head and then translated to my husband as we reorganised our day to work around our nanny being away. Jason dropped the two older kids at school and brought Remy into the office.
I headed to Channel 9, did the Today Show (you can see Karl, Lisa and I have an interesting and sometimes frustrating discussion here) and then went to the office. Jason and Remy had already arrived (we work together – Jason is the CEO of Mamamia) and they were both sitting at his desk munching banana bread and hot chocolates.
Armed with my ipad, I attempted Operation Distraction which has been only partially successful as I’ve tried to salvage some work time from needing to entertain my rambunctious 3 year old. As I type this, he is half-undressed and spilling yoghurt over the carpet in the office I share with MM’s Managing Editor Lana (who fortunately loves children and is endlessly patient and able to work despite the blaring of Wonderpets coming from my ipad).
But instead of bitching and whinging about it, I have been feeling very thankful today. Thankful that I can afford to have a nanny. Thankful that I have the job flexibility that allows me to bring my son to work when there is no other option. Thankful that my husband and I can work as a (SWAT) team to cover each other in a childcare crisis.
It reminded me of Thx Thx Thx ,a website begun by Leah Dieterich, a creative director and writer in LA. It’s based on the premise of writing thank you notes, and not just to people who had you over for dinner or gave you a birthday present. This is the delightfully quirky catch.
Her ‘About’ page describes it like this:
Leah Dieterich’s mother always told her to write thank you notes. So she does. To everything. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.
There’s always something to be thankful for. From the important things like Songs You’re Embarrassed to Like, and Heavy Eyelids that Tell You When You Need to Sleep, to friends and family, love and loneliness, light and darkness, Leah Dieterich sets out to acknowledge them all. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.
Here are a few examples from her site which she updates daily with a new note:

Thxthxthx
I just love it. So I thought it might be a lovely way to throw some balm over any frayed nerves today by writing my own thank you note and I encourage you to do the same. Come back as many times as you like and leave some more. I plan to.
Dear Virus That My Nanny Has,
Thank you for reminding me that I’m lucky to have her and fortunate that her being sick is something my life can accomodate without too much stress.
Love
Mia xxxx

Dear work colleague,
Thank you for waiting for me today with a hot coffee and a offer of a walk before going back to the office. You knew my day was going to be tough, and you made it so much easier. You rock!
Dear husband,
Thank you for waking me through the night. Your bad dreams remind me how lucky we are to sleep safely together in our bed, and how nice it is to just have you next to me

Dear boyfriend,
After a horrible day at school, where I locked my classroom and cried, thank you for letting me get out of a family dinner and sit on the couch in my pjs. Thank you for offering to come home, but I think I need some alone time to survive this last day tomorrow. I hope I can make it up to you on the holidays xx

Thanks lovely Grade 4 teacher for NOT giving my son another copy of his homework sheet… How easy it would have been for you to hand over another copy thus undoing the life lesson we are trying to teach him – RESPONSIBILITY! Without intent or knowledge you have supported our decision to make our lovely son learn the HARD way and face some consequences from the school
Tough being 9 hey…. I am sure he will thank me one day though

Dear husband of 22 years,
Thanks for putting up with my bad, bad moods; for being taken for granted; for giving me 2 amazing daughters; for supporting me in anything that I’ve ever wanted to do no matter how much you don’t understand it; for kissing me on the cheek EVERY single night for the past 22 years; for telling me how beautiful I am first thing in the morning when everyone knows I look like hell. Again, thanks for putting up with my bad moods. Oh and by the way, I’m getting pms so an extra big thanks for what’s coming in the next couple of days. I love you xox

Your husband sounds like a great man. Why don’t you try and do something for him and get rid of these bad, bad moods, the poor guy.

I’m not sure the point behind these posts was to criticise other’s thoughts. I’m also not sure that you really got the tongue in cheek humour behind my “thanks”.
But in the spirit of this post thanks Guest for taking something cathartic and meaningful and honest and judging it.

Dear Parents,
Thank you for allowing me to run the finances and accounts of your HUGE business whilst accommodating my life with young kids, school runs, school assignments and outside activities.
Thank you for accommodating my husbands – your son-in-law’s career, in the Defence Force…. being there for me and your grandkids when he isn’t… which is a lot!

Dear crappy parents I have to deal with,
Thank you for reminding me that even though I may not be the most amazing parent in the world I am certainly far from the worst, and even though I may sometimes judge my parenting efforts as pathetically inadequate I know with certainty that my kids will always be fed, clothed and loved.
And thank you to Mrs Kindergarten teacher for helping Pumpernickel settle in so well to “big school”. And for coping with my emails so well. You deserve a medal for teaching kinder and even though I’m irked you’re going on maternity leave soon I do sincerely wish you well.

Dear ovaries, thank you for being so very uncooperative meaning that I have to endure rounds of IVF and it is because of said IVF that husband and I are so much closer.
Dear work, thank you for the success I have at work that allows me to pay for IVF when so many others can’t afford to.
Dear mamamia readers – thank you for always being honest about what you think/feel, it makes me so aware that everyone has a story and there’s no such thing as the perfect life.

Good luck with IVF. It’s horrible isn’t it but there are some unexpected positives along the way too. Hoping you get a big positive pregnancy test soon xx

Dear 6 months of full time bed rest,
Thank you for allowing me to realise how nice it was to be able to leave the house, go for walks, be outdoors and get out of bed every day.
When I am finished on bed rest I will never take it for granted again.
Oh, and thanks for allowing me to grow my baby without going into labour prematurely and thanks for allowing me to spend all day reading, knitting and watching movies.. Even if I complain about how hard it is everyday.
Thanks

Dear Washing Liquid, Bleach, Pull up Nappies, Washing machine, Hydrolyte Ice Blocks, Clean tap water, Clean towels, Flushing toilet,

Dear DS’s teacher,
Thank you for being the wonderfully passionate and generous person that you are. You are young but wise, you have an ability to be firm but fun, you make his days so much brighter. Thank you for wanting to be a special needs teacher… you do an awesome job and you’re going to be missed over the holidays!
Love, the frazzled parent who is not anticipating holidays with the same sense of joy as others.
Dear DD’s teacher,
A full day excursion for a class of excited grade one students and then a two hour staff meeting yesterday and this morning you rock up with a grin on your face and enthusiasm seeping out of your pores as you tell the kids what fun things are planned for today. I don’t know how you do it (the thought of holidays sustaining you, perhaps?) but you do and I want to thank you for it.
Love, the frazzled parent (as above).

Dear Pelvis,
Thank you for the crippling pain for the last 8 months. It has honestly sucked so much and not walking or sleeping has been a struggle, but you are housing a tiny human that is healthy and will arrive soon to make our life so happy! I know that today u and I have had a very bad day, but we are very lucky we can actually make a baby, and like our first pregnancy, we eventually got to walk again! Some people cant have babies and some cant walk. We will be able to again and I thank you for reminding me how good we actually have it!
Please try really hard to be strong during labor, i will as well
