The first thing I saw when I turned on my phone with bleary eyes early this morning was a message from my nanny saying she was sick and couldn’t come to work. I was due at the Today Show in less than an hour and it struck me immediately that this was not ideal.
I rely on my nanny on the three days a week she comes. She’s like balm on our family with her supreme organisational skills and masterly ability to love and discipline my children as if they were her own. She also brings her baby daughter to work who we are all besotted with.
Arrangements were hastily made in my head and then translated to my husband as we reorganised our day to work around our nanny being away. Jason dropped the two older kids at school and brought Remy into the office.
I headed to Channel 9, did the Today Show (you can see Karl, Lisa and I have an interesting and sometimes frustrating discussion here) and then went to the office. Jason and Remy had already arrived (we work together – Jason is the CEO of Mamamia) and they were both sitting at his desk munching banana bread and hot chocolates.
Armed with my ipad, I attempted Operation Distraction which has been only partially successful as I’ve tried to salvage some work time from needing to entertain my rambunctious 3 year old. As I type this, he is half-undressed and spilling yoghurt over the carpet in the office I share with MM’s Managing Editor Lana (who fortunately loves children and is endlessly patient and able to work despite the blaring of Wonderpets coming from my ipad).
But instead of bitching and whinging about it, I have been feeling very thankful today. Thankful that I can afford to have a nanny. Thankful that I have the job flexibility that allows me to bring my son to work when there is no other option. Thankful that my husband and I can work as a (SWAT) team to cover each other in a childcare crisis.
It reminded me of Thx Thx Thx ,a website begun by Leah Dieterich, a creative director and writer in LA. It’s based on the premise of writing thank you notes, and not just to people who had you over for dinner or gave you a birthday present. This is the delightfully quirky catch.
Her ‘About’ page describes it like this:
Leah Dieterich’s mother always told her to write thank you notes. So she does. To everything. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.
There’s always something to be thankful for. From the important things like Songs You’re Embarrassed to Like, and Heavy Eyelids that Tell You When You Need to Sleep, to friends and family, love and loneliness, light and darkness, Leah Dieterich sets out to acknowledge them all. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.
Here are a few examples from her site which she updates daily with a new note:

Thxthxthx
I just love it. So I thought it might be a lovely way to throw some balm over any frayed nerves today by writing my own thank you note and I encourage you to do the same. Come back as many times as you like and leave some more. I plan to.
Dear Virus That My Nanny Has,
Thank you for reminding me that I’m lucky to have her and fortunate that her being sick is something my life can accomodate without too much stress.
Love
Mia xxxx

Dear Mum,
Thanks for considering upgrading to broadband internet so we can Skype while I’m away. (!!) In the meantime, thanks for talking on the phone for two hours each week and scanning important documents to email to me here.
Dear sister (the littlest one)
Thank you for looking after my baby (the cat) while I am overseas. I know he’s driving you nuts with the fat cat diet, but I also know he’s loved and cared for.

Dear ‘Dog running flat out down the street this afternoon after two boys on bikes with ears flapping in the wind and tongue hanging happily out of your mouth’
Thank you so much for making me laugh as I drove to the shops this afternoon. I was in a shitty, frustrated mood and the look of complete gay abandon on your face as you ran down the street after those two young boys on bikes just made my day.

Dear friends, parents, friends’ parents, teachers, old schoolgirls –
Thank you so much for the most amazing 12 years of my life I spent at school. With the bullying epidemic going around the world now, I’m starting to fully appreciate the fact that I almost never felt belittled, negated, worthless, stupid, useless or attacked in any way. I simply had good friends and a good education, and I think I’m one of the luckiest people alive for that.
Love,
Me.

Everyone, there’s a great book which can be downloaded for free or purchased in hard copy online. It’s called ‘An awesome Book of Thanks’ by Dallas Clayton. I read it to said toddler girl and she loves it. Similar idea to Mia’s. Just google the title.

While I can’t wait for you to be over, thank you for showing me what an amazing boyfriend I have. Thankyou for teaching my finance and I a very educational lesson in buying property this week. Thanks for letting us stress, not get enough sleep and jump through various hoops in order for you to accept a secondary offer after ours went in first. I know understand the role of a real estate agent and have learnt not to listen to what they are saying but read between the lines. THis house just wasnt meant to be and i hope our real house is out there waiting for us to find it.. (i hope!)

Thanks Alanis Morissette for the music
So many years later and your Unplugged album still has it. I could thank many other artists but that’s what is playing now and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
I’d also like to thank my Mum for teaching me to shamelessly dance around the house and giving me such a deep love for music.

Dear grandma,
Thank you for the money. Not because it’s made me spoilt or lazy, but because it’s allowed me to do more and experience more. You have set me and my children and their children up for financial stability coupled with a deep appreciation of what you went through to provide for us and how hard you worked.

I agree. It is a shame that there is a complete lack of recognition that in order for some women to hold certain roles we have to have flexibilty not always available through child care. There is absolutely no tax break for a nanny but I pay enormous tax. My job demands having the flexibility of a nanny,. If I worked for myself and had a staff member there would be tax breaks. Why should I penalised for wanting a career and a family. I am grateful that I can afford this, but not everyone can.

Dear singledom,
When you were first around, I loved you.
For the next three years, I bitterly hated you.
For the past few months I have tolerated you, trying very hard to trust that there is a reason you’ve been with me for four years now.
I know you’re teaching me something, however slowly, by giving me the confidence of knowing I can absolutely stand on my own two feet.

In friendship,
