For anyone who sometimes misses the bravado they felt during childhood.

This week Mamamia is featuring Carmel Debreuil. Carmel paints on plywood, using acrylic and Posca texters. Carmel says that she likes to “capture the innocence of childhood with its beauty, confusion, vulnerability and uncertainty, but also the bravado and swagger and confidence.”

“It’s almost like a slyly dark look at an awesome time of life,” she explains. “My work is definitely nostalgic and I hope it makes people smile, laugh and feel really good.”

Just looking at Carmel’s paintings, you can tell that kids will love them but Carmel says that they also appeal to many people without children, which she puts down to the “nostalgic feel” of the images.

“I find that most of my clients have a bit of a sense of humour, and possibly are these crazy little kids all grown up.”

And while Carmel says she imagines the stories behind the kids in the paintings, she also hopes “that people who look at the paintings create their own stories too and can get lost in the imaginary world”.
