Voulez Vous Project: Crystal Knight

By ELISSA RATLIFF

When David Bowie wrote Starman in the 1972, he had no idea he’d be inspiring an illustrator in Melbourne 42 years later.

But that’s what happened when Crystal Knight listened to his song. And now her illustrations and artworks each embody a little bit of Bowie, and we’re pretty sure he’d be pleased:

But Bowie isn’t her only inspiration.

“I have a quote pinned on my wall which perfectly describes me and my feelings towards my art practice, “I kind of enjoy not being fully accountable for my influences. You choose some things, and some things choose you.” Often something from my past or current surroundings can influence my work without me even realising.”

That inspiration ranges from fashion, photography, nature and beautiful faces – which you can see in her art:

Crystal says that her “main focus when making artwork is process, materials and aesthetic. For as long as I can remember I have always made things. I come from a very quirky and creative family and being artistic is something that I feel compelled to. I start with a collection of images or ideas, put on my painting smock and see where it ends up. Women’s faces feature heavily in my work; these faces are sometimes friends, though [they’re] often reference a photograph from a magazines or book. They are a bit like fashion illustrations, depicting both beauty and fashion though in a more abstract manner.”
