If you’re the sort of person who finds Valentine’s Day a little, ah – nauseating, don’t worry because even though for one post only, Mamamia is going to ooze love of all kinds: romantic love, family love, friendship love, unrequited love, puppy love, forbidden love, love for “stuff”, love for well for anything, it’s not neccesarily about your Valentine .
We’re going to run the whole schmaltzy gamut. But with a difference.
This isn’t your traditional Valentine’s post and you don’t have to write a letter to that “special someone” – you can write your note to anyone or anything! The cup of coffee that you love in the morning, the friend that makes you smile, your cat or your dog, the dress that makes you feel good about yourself – you get it? Anything.
Of course you can write to your Valentine. Or your child or your teacher or the man that sells the paper on the corner. Anyone.
Then share it.

I received a gorgeous text from one of my oldest and dearest friends today. Sadly we don’t often see each other anymore – with seven children between us and full time jobs our time is scarce. I didn’t make the connection to valentines day at the time, but this is a beautiful reminder that our love for each other is a constant source of comfort in a demanding world. That she is always with me emotionally even if we don’t see each other often. That love comes in many shapes and sizes and is an essential part of all our lives. I slaved away to make that ‘Kiwi fave’, the bacon and egg pie so you could finally try it for our Valentines Day picnic tonight, even taking the psychopathic trouble to carve our initials out of puff pastry for the top as a twee joke. But alas, it seems every time I go to any effort at all I soon wish I hadn’t. While I was baking this pastrified demonstration of my love, you had turned your phone off so you wouldn’t have to talk to “anyone” (ie. me, the only person who ALWAYS calls between 7:30 and 9:30 at night). Either you were watching porn or didn’t want to talk to me. I’m not sure which possibility I prefer.
Instead of a porn marathon or whatever you were doing, it would have been nice if you were putting your efforts into preparing a fantastic Valentines Day picnic. I don’t ask for fancy dinners, I don’t ask for flowers or gifts, so if I’m going to accept a simple picnic surely I can request that it’s a nice picnic not just consisting of whatever stale bakery goods are on sale as you pass through the nearest Coles on your way home from work tonight..too much to ask?
