In breaking magazine news today, it has been confirmed that Cleo and Dolly magazines may be merging their staff. The decision has apparently come from publisher Bauer’s head office in Germany.
Under the proposed plan, both the mags will remain separate, but will work under one editor-in-chief and with one set of staff.
There was reportedly a meeting this morning, in which staff from both mags were told they would have to reapply for their current positions under the new system – which means approximately half will lose their jobs.
It’s assumed that the all-important editor-in-chief position will come down to current Cleo editor Sharri Markson and Dolly Editor Tiffany Dunk.

To clarify, Dolly and Cleo continue as separate titles but with one newsroom and one editor in chief.

It's a disaster if these magazine close. Internet sites are good for the exchange of opinions but they don't break news or do big stories. That story on the cover of Cleo - 17 and a slave in Sydney - is mine. It is an important story about the forced marriage of young girls, something that is a major problem in Australia and yet keeps going totally unrecognised and unreported. it's as if no-one can believe it's true. It took a lot of time and research and find reputable sources and it required particular care and time to do the main interview with the young woman. Internet sites - at present - can't afford to pay journalists to do those kinds of stories. Magazines can barely afford it - I probably ended up earning about $5 an hour for all the time it took me. But those stories do need to be told.
Call me naive, but where will the new jobs come for everyone who has to move on? I get that life changes with technology and lifestyle habits, but wonder where the new opportunities will open up....
