Every so often a new utilitarian shoe comes along and explodes. Invariably, this shoe is ugly. Think: Birkenstocks, Reefer sandals, Crocs (I’ve worn the first and the last but I will draw the line at Reefers).
I used to own Crocs. Everyone in my family have owned or currently own (AND WEAR) Crocs. This is despite being ostracised by others who think they are the most abhorrent looking things ever to walk the earth.
Well, prepare your feet for a new assault by a new shoe. But this time, it looks goood. At least I think it does but what would I know? I wore Crocs.
My entire family bought different coloured pairs of these on our Christmas holidays and we’ve all been wearing them with gay abandon. Great for wet weather. Great for kids (anything without a buckle or laces or even velcro that can’t fall off is GREAT for kids).
Native Shoes are injected into EVA moulds and made to look like converse, only waterproof, kid-proof and in stacks of super bright colours. Handy to chuck on to go to the beach, a quick walk or to the shops.
It’s not just me, these kids really love their Native Shoes too:

Mia I am so glad your all enjoying the comfort and coolness of your Natives. I am the lucky girl who decked your family out! (I can confirm Mia indeed did paid the full $RRP) Check out the new styles we have just received in Australia!! yes the boat shoe is back and looking oh so smooth.

No actually Im not. Im just part of the population who is genuinely excited about these shoes. Im sorry you felt the need to leave a negative comment on my post, it’s a shame you cant see past, as you say “the commercialism” and just be stoked for a company who is giving it a go. Isn’t this whole section about spreading the love a find?? Share the love of an awesome find – not your negative attitude.

they look like they’d give you very stinky feet….
loading...
natives are… odor resistant! washable! anti-microbial! water proof! animal free! shock absorbant!
loading...
90 bucks a pair…. i think not!

Paula’s Choice cosmetics (http://www.paulaschoice.com.au/). I really love what it does for my skin, the prices are reasonable for such high-quality stuff, the ‘spin’ is honest and low-key and it’s not tested on animals. Plus I really enjoy reading the reviews of other products on the website — such honesty is refreshing in the cosmetics business.

I agree, the spokesperson for the company has turned me off completely, the patronizing tone and the obvious latching onto what is “apparently” not a sponsored post is tacky. I bet that Mia and her family will have a lifetime of free shoes from this company just from this post. So what may have started out as a not-a-sponsored-post has turned into one now.
loading...
Oh Mia you’ve gone too far this time. Ok I get their easy for the kids etc. But no there way worse than that dress you brought on holidays. Funny tho!
loading...
I assume Native shoes are for men as well…I saw a window full of them in a shoe store in Pitt St Mall, so will try.
I used to think Crocs were awful, until I actually wore a pair, then I was hooked.
loading...
Hi Mia, Lana, Nicky
Can you please start another post about sharing everyones lastest cool finds?
I LOVE those posts (and don’t think I’m alone) but this one has been too overrun with comments on Mia’s shoes and hardly any sharing of groovy stuff
Cordeline x
loading...
AGREE! Was thinking the same thing last night… Not Mia’s fault at all. Just doesn’t have the sharing is caring feel
loading...
Hey Cordeline, we have another ‘The Find’ post planned – stay tuned

I’ve been researching and looking into barefoot technology. I’ve just today bought myself a pair of Vibram Five Fingers KSO’s. (http://barefootinc.com.au/) they look very very weird but it’s all about strengthening the muscles in your feet and going back to early man and when we were kids – honestly most of us would’ve run around barefoot for much of our childhood.
Anyway I’ve had heaps of foot problems and i’m hoping these will assist – going by my research they will.
Can’t wait to wear them in!!
loading...
they look like avatar feet! is that what they’re supposed to be?
loading...
haha. Perhaps!?
They come in all different styles the ones i have are a little more green than blue. You kind of feel like a frog in them.
I’ve had them on for a few hours now just around the house and must say they’re rather comfortable.
loading...
Suzie, I’m sure you have impeccable taste and that these are the answer to your foot problems, but I saw these on someone a couple of years ago and since then, they have been top of my ugly shoe list. I’m a card carrying member of the I-hate-crocs-society, but these are even uglier than crocs – and Mia’s native shoes!
loading...
the purple wiggle wears these. He told me they were v comfortable and helped his joints cope with all the bouncing he does on-stage.
loading...
I think they’re ugly. Maybe not as ugly as crocs, but ugly.
loading...
These are perfect for my kids. I get fake crocs for $5 from Cotton On in several colours to match my daughters play clothes. Love it. I even make her wear socks with them in Winter! Ha Ha. Poor thing.
What are the prices for Natives though? Will I be able to afford to buy a variety of colours?
I loved Crocs when I backpacked. Comfy, easy, fine to get wet. And float when your travelling the islands.
And I love seeing adults wearing them. We all know there ugly, but the people that wear them dont give a crap. They think theyre comfy and practical. And that makes me smile and admire their inner peace and self confidence.
Stupid girls wearing high heels in inappropriate situations are more ridiculous than croc wearers. (Although crocs in inappropriate situations are silly too!)
loading...
I wasn’t into Converse in the 90s and I’m not into them in plastic.
The hot tip however, is Jamie Oliver’s Beef and Guinness Pie recipe. Sounds bizarre. Tastes amazing. Promise.
loading...
My latest find, Victoria’s Secret ‘Miraculous’ bra. It’s supposed to make you 2 cup sizes bigger, and for a B cup like me, that’s music to my ears!
loading...
amen sister!
They have them in bikini’s too!
loading...
yes but do they make your boobs into a strange shape when they push them up etc – that’s what I can’t stand about bras that are meant to help. I don’t want my boobies looking like strange little cones close to my throat!! hahah
loading...
I’m sorry, but they are just not me.
loading...
Does Oprah stir things up like this when she recommends something?!
loading...
i havem’t watched the videos but i took one look at those hideous native shoes and vomited a little in my mouth
i think any sort of plastic, rubbery shoe should be banned on anyone between the ages 9 and 90. i DON’T CARE how comfortable you say they are. “comfotable” is the word people use to justify ugly shoes.
loading...
Sorry, Native Shoes PR person. It’s very good that you’re engaging with the audience and communicating for your brand, but the tone is very off putting and patronising, and really rubs the wrong way.
I usually really enjoy this post, where everyone shares, but this one has been hijacked by the responses from Native that are just ick.
loading...
People are being so harsh on these Native shoes and Crocs too!? I supose these Native shoes are suppose to be more practical than stylish which can be a good thing. I luv these ‘the find’ posts!!!! Bring them back more often Mia!!!! Personally for me, I luv my ballet flat crocs pictured below (bought from http://www.crocs.com.au) they are my favourite find!!
loading...
I HATE crocs but I don’t mind these
loading...
Talk about Emporer’s New Clothes with the Native marketing and comments here.
Maybe they’re comfortable, maybe they’re “cool” somewhere. Do they stay on your feet when you walk in the shallows at the beach or go suck-suck-suck and drag you down?
Style is in the eye of the beholder, but this beholder has to add them to the list of ugly footwear trends/would-be-if-they-could-be-trends. The “Howard” is particularly unfetching. Why recreate the silhouette of a cheap, ugly leather shoe in plastic. With holes? In pink and yellow?
Are they made for 2 cents apiece in third world countries?
Their saving grace is that they are an option for vegetarian/vegan buyers. But before we buy, we definitely sigh at the ugly plastic childishness of our market choices. How much are they for a pair?
Just looked again. How could anyone think they look good? How? Explain this to me? What is attractive about them?
loading...
I usually love this post as it introduces me to great products that I might not have found out about other ways. It’s clearly not a sponsored post, Mia would have told us if it was, like she always does (I don’t know why people get so worked up every time Mia mentions that she likes something!).
I too find the comments from Native ridiculously patronising and rude. I can’t help but wonder how many of those comments singing the praises of the shoes came from the same IP address? It smacks of desperation.
loading...
Please accept our apologies.
Our intention was not to offend or be patronizing.
loading...
So Stop replying.
loading...
I have only ever found one pair of Crocs I liked enough to very briefly consider buying. I didn’t buy them, but they’d been in with a chance.
So unless these native shoes come up with something similar with this same suede kind of finish, it’ll never be my thing.
If you’re looking for a comfy work shoe, though, that doesn’t look like a typical pair of Crocs, I recommend the following (in black/black, rather than black/red):
loading...
ooh, where did you find those?
loading...
I originally found them at the Crocs store in the Queen St Mall in Brisbane, but if you’re elsewhere you can check out the different styles online and I’m sure you could call your local store to find out if they carry it. =) I have to admit, there are some nice ballet flat styles they have that I would wear under jeans and people wouldn’t guess they were Crocs without looking closely!
http://www.crocsaustralia.com.au/crocs-sueded-alice/10066,en_AU,pd.html?cid=001&cgid=women-footwear-work-medical
loading...
I bought a pair of these. They gave me the WORST blisters ive ever had. SOO bad.
loading...
Probably good I didn’t end up buying them, then =P I’m glad you said that, because I was almost considering going back for them!
loading...
I know a few nurses that wear them and haven’t had any trouble. I’m between sizes tho so they don’t fit me quite right and the sole is quite narrow and can feel weird. I agree though, they don’t look like crocs…
loading...
They look like sketchers!
loading...
Oh My Gosh!! I bought these to wear to work when I was working in retail, I used to wear them with black stockings and they were so comfy and didn’t give me blisters. They feel too funny wearing without stockings…I’m not a croc fan but these are good
loading...
Ugly – but not as ugly as Crocs. Sorry but I won’t be buying them. Nice shoes for me need a heel and either a peep, round or pointy toe. They’re not about comfort but damn they look good.
Good luck tho Native shoes I reckon they’ll be a hit.
loading...
We sincerely apologize if we have offended anyone on this site.
Our intention was not to come across patronizing, however it appears that to be the case.
We simply got involved in the discussion to answer questions many of you had about the brand and to try address any concerns where possible.
We are a small company that are very passionate about what we do. Sometimes maybe a bit too passionate.
Please accept our apology and we will leave you be.
With warm regards,
Native
loading...
Good on you for being passionate! Harness that and you’ll go far.
It’s a very good idea for you to be checking the feedback on posts like this as it gives you a lot of info on what you’re doing right and what may need some improvement and I’m sure people appreciate that.
If it means anything, they do look cooler than Crocs. To me, anyway.
loading...
Yuh – I’m a bit so/so about the shoes (not a fan of placcy shoes, but can see they’d be handy at beach, pool, boat kinda thing), but the smarmy comments from the company have turned me from a “maybe I’ll check them out” to “hell to the no!”
Just a trick for young players, Native: if you have to constantly tell people how cool you are… you’re more f*ckwit than Fonz.
loading...
Duly noted and apologies we offended.
loading...
Don’t worry Native, I think some people get offended from the time the sun shines through their window in the morning till they go to bed! I liked your sunny, lighthearted responses. Some people just need to get over themselves. xo
loading...
Never said I love you Native Shoes. Please don’t take offense. I have four little crazy grommets that wear your shoes…aged 3 to10. Oldest is in sponsorship talks re swim clothes. with another company. No this is regards to Mamamia.. Mamamia has been about topics, sure products are mentioned but this is pretty blatant. I’m just a mum…just saying.. And yes I’ll sleep well. Please don’t be patronising. It’s unbecoming. xo
loading...
Fair cop.
Apologies we offended.
It most certainly was not our intention.
loading...
I am terrifed that they will stop making cheap rip-off crocs (the real thing are too expensive.)
So I hoard them. I reckon I’ve got about 6pairs in my attic, waiting their turn.
These native shoes look pretty good, but i won’t consider thme if they’re more than $20- they’re plastic shoes!
loading...
Its ignorant of you to say you won’t pay more than $20 when you clearly haven’t checked them out. I’m sure your trashy $20 shoes don’t last as long as these.
loading...
Um, did you call me IGNORANT??? Are we still talking about plastic shoes here???
I actually did check these shoes out, i watched both vids. Hence my comment that they look ‘pretty good’.
There was no price on the vids, and I’m sure they last longer than my imitation crocs, but then I pay LESS THAN $20 for mine, which is fine bc I wear them to the beach, the pool, gardening, on kids. ie, all the places suggested on this post.
And did you really call my shoes TRASHY????
loading...
Was excited to log on and and see a ‘What’s your find’, but it is all about the shoes…..
loading...
This is a very clever marketing approach. Hmm hope my post will be posted. Careful guys… people will quickly see through. Keep to topics not products. You don’t want to lose a captive audience…
loading...
Hi Mum,
We wish we had a marketing budget that could buy editorial like this, but alas we are only a small start-up company operating on a shoe-string budget.
Luck has brought Mia to Native and we are glad she likes our shoes enough to post about them.
You can sleep well tonight knowing that this certainly isn’t a paid post.
Native x
loading...
That’s a bit of a catty reply, Native Shoes … don’t really like that ‘We love you too’ tone…
loading...
Never said I love you Native Shoes. Please don’t take offense. This has nothing to do with you guys. It’s unbecoming. xo

Apologies we offended.
It most certainly was not our intention.
loading...
Mumof4, As I explained to TheOriginalCamille below Mia genuinely loved the shoes , she paid for them (full retail) and now she is writing about them because that is what Mamamia is all about – sharing.
The Find post is not new to Mamamia – Mia has shared her love of Bonds undies before, her favourite song and some shoes from K-Mart… (me thinks she has a shoe “thing”)
No sinister marketing plan just a regular Mamamia post where we can all talk about what we have found lately that is rocking our world

Mr By is gluing up his latest pair of sneakers (so hard to get him to part with them).
I’d love to buy him a pair (ugly or not) but can we go into a shop?
My stinky footed teenager and middle boy-who-won’t-wear-socks could also benefit. Hmmmm.

Hi Flutterby,

I do not like the look of the shoes..but I am going to check them out in the shops…although they would be have to be very comfortable for me to even consider them….I wonder if they would be suitable shoes for school ???
As for my find I found some funky shorts in my fav op shop for three dollars..which received plenty of complements..wonder if the shoes would????
loading...
Smart simple functional comfortable convenient flexible honest…….
Just some of the words I use To describe my natives
Was unsure at first but as a person who does not like to judge a book by it’s cover, checked them out found a style that I can rock and am thankful for my new go to shoe for checking out the surf, run down to the shops or whatever I need to do.
Like most good products when used correctly, They are a pleasure to be involved with.
loading...
How is a shoe “honest”
You sound like you work for the company and that makes me NOT want to buy these horrible shoes.
loading...
how did you use them incorrectly? Do tell…
loading...
Anyone who enjoys the outdoors or any form of activity that involves water should give Native shoes a go. And to the suits out there they are very practical to wear to work on a rainy day then you can put your dry work shoes on when you reach the office. The shoes are comfortable, lightweight, more eco friendly to the environment than other shoes, they don’t make your feet sweat & they don’t stink. They are the most practical summer shoe. Don’t knock it till you try it.
loading...
I spotted Rachel Taylor wearing them at a coffee shop the other day and she pulled them off nicely. She was wearing just the plain black one’s though.
The colours can stay on the kids.

I always said I would never wear Ugg boots outside the house but now that I live in London I live in my Ugg boots. Embrace the ugly and the comfortable. As long as you’re not wearing them to work or other socially unacceptable functions who cares. Trip to the shops to grab some milk? Perfect.
loading...
Me too!
I would NEVER leave the house back home in my uggs. I resisted for the first couple of months after I got to London but now I wear them outside all the time.
The turning point was a weekend in Belgium in December. It was the coldest I have ever been in my life and I was just in my nice leather boots. One of the other girls in the group had the laceup uggs and they just looked so warm and comfortable – I made a mental note to buy some the second I got back to London.
I’m sure when I eventually go back to Australia I’ll get back to my old rule – but here its just too freakin cold not to wear them.
loading...
When in Rome…
Although I have to admit, I secretly love wearing them outside the house. It kinda makes sense when it’s this cold, don’t you think? Although I can’t condone wearing them at work as one colleague of mine does…to work? Yes. At work? No!
loading...
I have several pairs of the Natives and I am so stoked with them. Wore a pair on the rocks while taking some photos and the guy next to me cut his foot open on oysters.
Great shoes, they come in a range of styles and colours, so there really is something for everyone.
A couple of the local surf groms are not seen without these shoes on their feet, apparently all thier mates are buying them now too.
Give them a go people!
loading...
They look like something straight out of a Rivers commercial.
loading...
oooh harsh…
but we think you’re funny

I bought my daughter a pair of Natives before Christmas and have since bought another pair for her and for me. They are fabulous! I’m kinda glad a lot of you don’t like them as they won’t become so mainstream like Crocs. You can only buy these at “cool” stores where most of you probably don’t shop anyway. What I can say is they are THE most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned, I wear them shopping, walking, working in the yard, at the park. One of the best things about them is if my daughter gets them dirty while we’re out playing I just rinse them off. To the haters – you don’t know what you’re missing!
loading...
Hmm…I am reserving judgement on the shoes… Could be good for kids to wear to middle of winter swimming lessons.
My find is my new dishdrainer. haves no idea a dishdrainer could make me so ridiculously happy. I don’t know what brand it is but it has really high sides so the dishes don’t fall out, I can stack up heaps of plastic containers and it has this cool silicone utensils holder attached so the utensils stand up to dry. Also has hooks along the side that fit the sponge and cloth in
and they dry beautifully. I think I’m in love.

oooohhhh sounds good! wear did you buy it from??

Hi guys,
We love the banter and the fact our shoes have evoked a reaction in so many of you. We can only assume that you haven’t tried them on or investigated the brand much if you jump straight to hate after seeing a photograph.
Fact is, these are here now and they are selling extremely well – to cooler people than you may think.
This brand was started by skateboarders and has links to the creative and arts communities globally and actually brings a whole lot more cred than you might realize (only yesterday, fashion label Moncler staged a media stunt with 200 models wearing Native in Grand Central Station (NYC).
They’ve been supported by some of the finest boutiques around the world including Fred Segal, American Rag, Urban Outfitters and Undefeated in the US and Beams, Ships, United Arrows and Journal Standard in Japan. Locally, you’ll find them in Hype DC, Deus, Alfies, Via Alley, Kido, Prime and Driftlab, just to name a few.
We invite you to inspect our shoes in the flesh and see that there is actually a lot more depth to the brand than just the basic eva styles pictured above…we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised
Please visit http://www.nativeshoes.com to further enrich your mind.
Peace,

My 2 y.o Felix has a pair, and now so does my hubby …. thanks to our mate who stocks them in RAD (newcastle).
Both my boys love them. They look great and are super practical. Everytime Felix wears them other mums comment. Will be a staple in his shoe cubpoard forever.

What material are the shoes made of?
loading...
EVA. (The material commonly found in the midsole of an athletic shoe which provides cushioning and shock absorption.)
Native’s EVA material is light-weight, waterproof, washable, anti-microbial, odour-resistant, shock absorbent and animal by-product free!
loading...
I’ve looked at the website – you say they’re cool – I still say they’re ugly.
loading...
Hey no sweat. We’re glad you don’t like them.
Just makes us want to work harder to get them on all of your peers and influencers
Peace x
loading...
Just because they sell well doesn’t mean they’re great. Crocs are awful and yet i see grown adults wearing them. Hell most of the music in the top ten is awful and mass produced by gross record companies and yet dumb arsed people will buy it.
loading...
Hey, we agree 100% on your comment.
We invite you to at least put a pair in your hands before you tarnish them with the same brush as the ear-bleeding Top-10!
loading...
Haha I agree. Just because “cool” people wear them doesn’t necessarily mean they are good. Popular culture is full of bad taste.
Although I have succumbed to wearing long UGGS out of the house now on extremely cold days, where I once stated I wouldn’t wear them as far as the letterbox. Appropriate wear for appropriate occasions, but please, for aesthetic style, please don’t wear something because it is merely comfortable. Putting one’s foot in a warm bucket of shit is comfortable!

i love that you guys have taken the time to come on here and join the conversation – it makes me want to know your brand and products. will def be investigating. love your attitude x

I don’t .
It makes me nauseaous, in fact.
I hope Mia is getting A LOT of money for this, cos it’s tacky.
loading...
Camille, Mia is not getting paid anything for this. We are always very upfront and honest with sponsored posts and have never tried to disguise them. Every sponsored post we do starts with the words “Welcome to a sponsored post from…”
Mia genuinely loved the shoes (believe me she has been raving in the office), she loved them, she paid for them (full retail) and now she is writing about them because that is what Mamamia is all about – sharing.
You are able to talk about Your FIND in this post. It doesn’t need to be all about Native Shoes…
Hope that explains it
loading...
ok, thanks for clarifying.
I think it is the fact that the native shoes people have replied to so many comments that i found tacky.
But as for Mia, I don’t blame her for doing sponsored posts, heck, she’s got to make this thing profitable. She must really love those shoes, then….

i love them. i would buy them NOW……. but no stockist in WA!

Hey wow they look great for kids – my son LOVES his crocs and they are sooo easy and indestructible (except when he uses them as a brake for his scooter instead of using the actual brakes. Then they wear out!) And best of all they protect his feet while letting them keep cool and I don’t have to find so many socks all the time.
But one of the things he loves about crocs is that he can get them logoed (ie spiderman crocs, ben ten crocs etc). Do you do a line in kid specific ones??
loading...
Hi Petra,
We haven’t gone down the line of logo’d or cross-branded product specifically for kids.
Our kids line is basically a miniaturized version of the adults.
We hope you find a pair near you to see how your son likes them

Why is everyone hating on mias shoes and crocs aswell??? I think these shoes definatly have charecter mia!! I personally luv crocs aswell! People just dont realise that crocs are not just thoes shoes for old people that are hole type slip ons in different colours… there are some actual cool crocs avaliable that look like ballet flats! They are super comfortable and when you put them on they are padded heaps so they feel like your walking on air, this is why crocs became so famous, they are just so comfortable, recently when i was in melbourne i came across the one and only Crocs shop in melbourne in Bridge road richmond and it was amazing!! Believe me when i say i thought Crocs were for old people and not very attractive but my opinion has completly change now after visiting the store, I got these three pairs recently (pictured below) I luv the colours and also wear the black ones all the time because they are so comfy! they all go great with jeans too, Have i convinced you all that Crocs are cool! ? they actually come in some nice styles and cool colours, they are also made with odour resistant technology, so they dont smell! check out their site http://www.crocs.com.au they have so many styles and ballet flat type of styles too and you can shop online too! These crocs pictured below are definatly my find of the month!!

I love my Crocs !

This is a fly trap – amazing. Saw it at work in a friend’s garden. She got it from Bunnings for under $10 and the liquid bait attracted so many flies it filled right up with blowies. *Gross* but really, really works! Here’s ours:

we LOVE this

noooooooooooo! when you wear shoes like these, you have given up on life!
the only exception is birkenstocks, i am lusting after a silver pair to wear ironically to farmer’s markets with my girlfriend, even though the new lesbian shoe trend are those ugly as sin shoes that are shaped like your feet.
loading...
I love my silver birkenstocks…
loading...
I have a silver pair! They are awesome. Check out Style Tread’s website. I don’t understand why Mia says Birks are ugly. I have a black pair that are about 18 months old, they are so perfectly moulded to my feet it is like sinking into clouds! LOVE MY BIRKS.

haha, they are the people mover of shoes!

I heart birkenstocks

Those are truly the most revolting shoe I have ever seen in my life. A plastic faux-converse?! They may be worse than a pair of Crocs

I always said I would never wear my crocs outside my garden. I did. And do you know what? It was a liberating feeling thinking I was brave and carefree enough to venture out in them. Who cares what people think of your shoes? They make me happy and comfy and I really want some of these now but will wait for the knock offs. C’mon Target you know you want to!!

I am the only person who thinks crocs suck for kids? Never was there a shoe more likely to send a child arse over on any potentially slippery surface.

I own a pair of these shoes also and don’t understand why you all think they’re so ugly. How are they any worse than Birks, or Havaianas???

The only time I would consider wearing these is on my boat, because they could handle the wet. It’s the only time I ever wear Crocs too and the only reason I bought Crocs.
My find: Icebreaker Merino clothing. The tops are closefitting and sexy under a business suit, you can wear them year round, they are brilliant for travelling as, if you have to, you can wear them several times without them stinking. They wick very well. You will never want to wear anything synthetic again once you’ve worn Icebreaker, I just wish I could afford more of them!
