Do You Like This Story?

Take Santa, an 80′s style Christmas knit, a twirl of tinsel and the batty Uncle you haven’t seen since last December 25 and what do you get? These photos. Oh Christmas time. Whatever you’re dreading about the festive season this year, nothing can be more awkward than this, right?

The pics are from Awkward Family Photos and there’s plenty more where they came from, which you can look at here.

Do you have a favourite of the awkward family Christmas shots? What’s been your most awkward Christmas moment? (Feel free to add your own!)

OMG I just remembered…… MIL also had a photo album with pics of her poodles dressed up as groom and bride! both sitting in an antique pram! Gosh I hope she doesn’t come on this website!

    So funny!

My MIL made us do a photo shoot of our daughter wearing this navy suit she has kept from when her sons were babies. “made us” is the proper term as she took the appointment without consulting us and ordered some friends of hers who live close to us to organise the whole thing to make sure we would do it (she knows we hate tacky photos). The navy suit was sent to her friends as well as the money to pay for the shots and her friends were told to accompany us to the shoot armed with a set of instructions concerning the background of the photos, the angles to be taken etc.
She also likes to tell us that we shouldn’t feel pressure about how we choose to celebrate Xmas but every year, she sends us a Xmas suit for our daughter to wear and asks us for photos of our Xmas with the tree, daughter opening presents etc.
AAwwww I only like Christmas for the food and my daughter

Is the boy in speedos in photo 1 sitting on a ‘pretend’ chair?! i.e. just using his leg/core muscles to balance in a sitting position. Why, oh why?

    These were all just hysterical.

Love the Dad in the very last photo in his all-in-one PJ’s and owning it.

Hilarious. Awkward Family Photos – one of my favourite sites. Some of those photos need to be seen to be believed.

What do people think of Christmas letters? I would never do one in a million years but I do receive them and always find them a bit like bragging. Other people going on and on about their fantastic lives, or the really bitter one we received one year with the writer going on about how disappointing his family had been, or another friend who shared the fact that she’d had miscarriage….I don’t know, I just think they are a bit tacky.

This is going to sound very bah humbug but I also detest the Santa photos. I’ve never made my kids to them, I have seeing those parents forcing their frightened crying kids to sit on a strange man’s knee.

For me it depends on the tone. If it’s a friendly catch-up tone then it’s fine but any hint of wunderkind winning thousands of school prizes then it’s not so good. How does it compare with facebook, which is also full of those details and more?!

Not a fan of the Christmas letter myself. You’re right – usually it sounds like a bragfest – ‘little Johnny has started walking and is getting into everything! He just ADORES his big sister!’ Yeah, well, thanks for that.

Christmas letters are so insincere. If you really wanted to keep up to date with peoples lives you would make the effort to contact them more often than at Christmas with a brag-fest letter. We received one last year telling us how fabulous their life was…by Easter their marriage had ended. So I do think they can be a case of trying to convince yourself how fabulous everything is. And while I do like Santa photos they are only to be shared with the grandparents. Nobody outside the immediate family wants to be the recipient of a santa/Christmas photo with someone elses kids!

My relatives overseas do it and I like it. It’s like a giant update on what everyone is doing. They have five kids and they’re all scattered around the world, so they always have lots of interesting news.
I can see how it would be cringe worthy but if people come over all smarmy and insincere when they write them.

        I agree, I like them.
I have a friend with breast cancer, who wrote about her diagnosis, treatment and thanked people for the support she received. People who received the letter already knew about the cancer, but I found her positivity and thankfulness truly touching, and was grateful for the letter.
I also don’t mind the ones that are a bit boasty, what’s wrong with rejoicing in the success of your family & friends?

I laughed so hard at that lot that I choked! Husband came out to my computer to see what it was about, shook his head, went back to his computer. We don’t “do” Xmas, although certain trappings have crept in this year ;) and that lot of photos was enough to make me glad. they reminded me of certain Xmas photos from the past, especially one when I was 17 and forced my parents to accept the current beau at the Xmas lunch table – the photo from that year shows a rigidly disapproving pair of parents, a sulky me, a distanced sister and an idiotically grinning beau… a TOTAL disaster. And more recently when I DID try to “do” a Xmas lunch, lots of family, the resultant group shot shows me looking hot, red-faced, drunk and fat – and my sister-in-law, bless her, had it laminated as the photo for a family calendar, which she distributed to everyone!! the horror!!! thanks for the laugh, and the memories, Mia.

I love them! I do the ‘children with santa’ photo every year and love that moment in time being captured from ‘crying baby’ to ‘youngster in awe’ to ‘sullen teenager.’ Maybe I need to up the ante though and insert myself and husband wearing weird outfits and weirder expressions.
