Do You Like This Story?

I’m going to start the open post off with whats on my mind this week and I’ll get straight to it, I have technology rage. It seems like the more electronic gadgets and devices I gather, the less patience I have for them. The battery on my iPhone seems to only last half a day (okay so it might have something to do with my Draw Something addiction) and my laptop now randomly shuts down -usually at the most inopportune times, like when I’m mid sentence in an unsaved post. Grrr. I realise it’s a first world problem, but I rely on technology so much to do my job that it’s so frustrating when it doesn’t perform how I expect it to (if someone knows when the iPhone 5 is likely to be released, please let me know in the comments below).

Office life

The behind-the-scenes gallery is my favourite part of the open post. When I was on maternity leave it was my way of keeping in touch with everyone and what they were doing and wearing. You won’t see me in the gallery today, mostly because my under eye bags are bigger than my head (side note: why does eye cream come in such small containers?). I have to admit, I’m a little jealous of Mia who has spent the week down-dogging and being massaged at the glorious Gaia retreat with her Mum.

Mug cakes

Please tell me I’m not the only one who is late to the mug cake party. How did I not know about these sweet little inventions until now? For the uninitiated (like me), a mug cake is a quick tasty dessert you can whip up in under two minutes in the microwave. And the best bit is they’re for one, so you don’t even have to share it. I haven’t tried the recipe yet, but to me they look pretty failproof. Have you made a mug cake, did it work and more importantly did taste good?

mug cake2 380x453 Open Post: whats on your mind?

Nutella Mug Cake

Ingredients
4 tablespoons self rising flour
4 tablespoons white granulated sugar
1 egg
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
3 tablespoons Nutella
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil

Method
1. Combine all ingredients in a large coffee mug. Whisk well with a fork until smooth. Microwave on high for 1 1/2 – 3 minutes (time depends on microwave wattage. Mine took 90 seconds).
2. Top with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Enjoy!
Note: Depending on the wattage of your microwave, you may have to increase cooking time.

Makes 1 very large serving. (Note: our readers have noticed this is indeed a very large serving and suits more like 4-6 people).

Recipe via Babble.

The couples that dress together…

I love this Switcheroo project from self-taught Canadian photographer, Hana. Couples are photographed twice in the exact same spot, but with their clothes switched around. It reminds me of when my husband and I have turned up to social events wearing really similar clothing.

2-year-old covers Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’

This is so cute. I love how into it she gets -even when she doesn’t know the lyrics- it’s as if she knows what all the words mean.

What’s on your mind this week?

OMG you have made my day!!! I have no oven at the moment and now I can make a cake – that is totally amazing timing, thanks :)

OMM – the autism forum segment on ACA the other night. Sooo not long enough, how about they do a Special Presentation on Autism like the Kony one? From looking at the hundreds of facebook posts to that forum, I had no idea how many parents have ASD kids, many of them have more than one child on the spectrum, and indeed how many children miss out on funding and early intervention. My 6 year old was diagnosed with Aspergers last year, it’s just brought about all kinds of emotions in me.

And I have a Draw Something addiction too!!

I make chocolate mug brownies and they’re divine (especially with a spoonful of vanilla icecream thrown on top to serve.

    For one mug:
2 tbsp plain flour, 2 tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp cocoa, pinch salt – mix together

Add 1 tbsp veg oil and 1 1/4 tbsp water. Mix thoroughly and microwave for a minute.

Play around with microwaving times to make it firmer or gooier. Mmmmm!

Today is my 27th birthday. I am now in my ‘late twenties’…

I can’t help but feel a little bummed. I can’t help but look at all the things I haven’t achieved yet. I’m not in a relationship, I don’t have kids, I don’t own my own property.

I am trying to think of the things I HAVE achieved though – good career, awesome friends, fantastic family, terrific pet.

Isn’t it funny how when we were kids our birthdays couldn’t come fast enough and as we get older they seem to come TOO fast, lol.

I’ve had a pretty chilled day. I’m a teacher and have tried to plan a cruisy day. Some of my cherubs suprised me by getting me some gifts and the others are trying to give me the present of good behaviour, lol.

Not doing anything too special tonight – I had a dinner with the family over the weekend and got my presents then too.

I’m super looking forward to the weekend. I have a friend flying up and a group of us are staying in the city and having an epic girl’s weekend.

    • Happy Birthday! It was mine yesterday and I turned 26 and I DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING!

I compared myself to my mother at my age – married, baby on the way (not yet a home owner) and got upset I haven’t achieved these things – despite taking 5 years to finish uni (which Mum didn’t do) and having a career (which Mum didn’t have).

Then I realised that we had achieved different things by age 26 and I’m not a failure for not having done what she did- Mum is 51 and just embarking on a uni career and hopefully for me the husband/baby/house will come when it is ready!

p.s you know because your birthday is mid-week you are totally within your rights to claim the entire upcoming weekend as your birthday weekend?!

Then I decided that I was not going to waste the whole day thinking about what could be and enjoy the now … so I set off on a day of shopping and pampering!

OMM: dealing with in laws. I feel really bad because my in laws are wanting to buy lots, do lots, send lots etc for us and bub (9wks to go!) but they keep taking it toooo far or sending us things we’re never going to use. We live in a teeny 2 bedroom apartment in sydney and they live in a massive 5 bedroom house in NQ. They’ve been to our place but I think the concepts of “limited space” and “first time bub, we’d like to do our own thing” are hard for them to grasp.
No matter how many subtle or unsubtle hints we can’t seem to get through to them. I know this isn’t something that should be a problem really but I feel like they’re taking over the fact that its me and my husband having a baby, not them.
The only blessing is the fact they are so far away – god knows how far they’d go if they were still a 10min drive away!!

Also thinking of all my rellies in Townsville. They’re all thankfully ok but some are out helping friends pick up the pieces literally and figuratively which can still be dangerous. Hope they take care.

OMM: Solved the bridesmaid & sister drama – my sister is genuinely happy to not have to deal with being a bridesmaid, and honoured to do a reading and a speech in stead, so people know shes my sister, rather than trying to pick her from a line of my friends.

Now I have to turn my attention to finding someone to make my dress. I have fallen ridiculously in love with a dress i found on the internet (and I have tried on similar ones) but its ‘designer’ and a few seasons old, so they dont make it anymore (and I cant afford the $6k pricetag).

Husband and I celebrated together and I got to speak to my parents and a few relatives over the phone, it’s not the same as celebrating together in person though. I appreciate husband getting into it with me seeing as he didn’t grow up celebrating it.

There is nothing cute or spontaneous about that video. The kid is being prompted. You can hear the faint whisperings of whoever is holding the camera – and the kid keeps looking towards them for approval. It’s just a pathetic attempt at using a 2 year old in order to go viral. OMM I’ve just returned back to work after 6 years off to have a few kids. Although i am absolutely loving it, I am so exhausted by the end of the day after picking 3 kids up and doing homework, dinner, baths, stories, washing etc that today i’ve just totally fallen in aheap.
It didn’t help that ive worked through last 4 days incl the whole weekend high on cold and flu tablets. I just need to rest today but with so much washing and other household chores to catch up on I just don’t know where to start!!!
Even though my husband was home on the weekend with the kids he didn’t do any of the normal chores around the house i would have done such as washing, getting school uniforms ready etc. MEN!
I know it was his weekend too, but one load of washing could not have been too hard to hang out.

The good news is i’m using today to give my 2 year old lots and lots of well needed cuddles and I will have finished reading the hunger games by school pick up time :)
the bad news is i still have not done this mornings breakfast dishes and really don’t want too!

Are you truly doing baths, dinner, washin up, homework, bedtime etc all on your own?! After working just te same as your husband? Thats not on unless there are some really unique circumstances involved…

And having to do all the housework in the weekend? Seriously, that is all kinds of not okay.

Why is it your job? Because you have a vagina? Does his penis render him unable to contribute equally?

Ok MMers I need some health advice please :-) on Monday our bootcamp class was training at the beach, we chose to train barefoot and now I have these blisters (friction burns?) on my feet on the soft skin under my toes. I live in steelcaps boots and my blisters are all gooey cos they can’t dry out and Im worried about infection, any advice on speeding up the healing process would be awesome! Jess you need to go to the chemist and ask them to get you an appropriate dressing. Keep those suckers dry and barefoot as much as possible. And you can wash with warm salty water (less stinging).

    • Xanthe

Vaseline, Vaseline, Vaseline. Yes I know the blisters will feel gooey under your boots, but will limit further damage.
(Experienced hikers and walkers slather their feet with Vaseline before putting their socks on. Prevents blisters in the first place)
Wash the Vaseline off when you get home, dry feet thoroughly, then use Lanacane or Prantal powder.
You can use the peroxide if want, it’s an amazing anaerobic antibacterial – if it fizzes up, then it’s working on GERMS.
      But it WILL sting.
      Sorry.

OMM. My big brother. 2 years ago he sustained a Brain injury after 10 years of drinking. Long story short – we went through a crap 10 months where he was in an out of neuro ICU, then in a rehabilitation facility. Surgeries galore. Seizures galore. We moved him into a unit and there were fantastic support services put in place, however the first day he was on his own, he started drinking again. Broke all our hearts. Anyway – he is on my mind much at the moment – which usually means he’s about to end up in hospital again from a blackout or a seizure. Torn between wanting him to get well for himself, or all his pain ending. Lets hope it the former.

Nicky I read an article the other day that to improve your battery power on your iPhone , let it run out completely. Then leave it dead for over an hour ( over night is the only time I can be without my phone for that long, so thats when I did it). Then plug it back in and charge it to 100%, without stopping. This really worked for me and of course another trick is to turn the brightness down to as low as you can handle it. Worked for me!

I had my first session with a counsellor last week. The lady was really nice and easy to talk to. She gave me a few things to chew over. I’m going to see her again this week, and then we will discuss whether I have more sessions with her on my own or see her as a couple – she is a trained marriage counsellor. I would feel comfortable taking my husband to talk to her. He is continuing with his own sessions too and I can see him making some changes, like staying upstairs with me after the kids are asleep instead of going to his study. I also did all his ironing the other day without him having to ask me, and I think he appreciated that.

Everything still feels quite distant and I hope we are able to find our way back to each other. I can’t believe people can grow so far apart that the thought of intimacy seems new now. At least we are trying and not giving up just yet.

Oh I felt that pain last year. I went 4 months without a microwave. It was good in theory, but in reality it meant that on the days i forgot to thaw meat in the fridge, dinner was difficult.

Try Big W – we needed a new micro recently and got one for about $40 I think – pretty small, but does the trick!

I find the microwave is really only used in our house for reheating leftovers, but it means there is so much less waste when you can warm up last night’s leftover spag bol rather than throwing it away, or having it all a bit crusty around the edge from using the oven!

I handed in my resignation letter two weeks ago. It’s my last shift this Sunday. I love my new job and I have the most wonderful boss. Excited for my last year of uni.

And most importantly I can’t remember the last time I felt depressed.

Wishing everyone the best because you truly deserve it. :)

I LOVE mug cakes! They’re so cute and perfect when you need that sugar kick.

Seeing that Nicky’s asking what’s on our minds this week… I’m dying to get advice on something.

You know those people who make noises when they eat? They slurp ANYTHING and make all kinds of funny noises with their mouthes when food is in their mouth? And you just wonder whether they can hear it all happening? Well they drive me insane.
Of course, I never ever say anything about it. That’s even more rude.
Well, my main problem is that my boyfriend if 1 year does it and it’s starting to really bother me. So much that I actually get put off eating with him!
I adore him and know that I sound shallow but I can’t help feeling this way!
Should I say something nicely or just grit my teeth and block it out?

Mug cake looks delish, I shall be trying it – however, I can assure you that the recipe is for about 4 mugs (not necessarily 4 people though) I made a similar recipe recently and by the time you’ve got 4 tbsp of flour in a mug, you’re not going to get much else in

I got to work and was a little bit upset (no work morning teas for birthdays so no-one remembered) and then THE CAKE ARRIVED! I was so excited and it was so thoughtful and lovely. That is a giant serve of mug cake! I split that much between two mugs for me and my boyfriend. My tip, only nuke it for 45 seconds and you get a more pudding like consistency. Oh and add choc chips!

OMM is the person who randomly texts me but won’t say who they are. It is just generic messages like “happy harmony day” (today). It is just a bit weird.
