Welcome to our Open Post of the week, where you can come and talk about – well – whatever you like.
On Saturday night I got to go to the kind of event some people think is my regular life but actually never is. Richard Wilkins was holding a benefit to celebrate his 25 years in the industry and to raise money for the Down Syndrome Foundation. As he explained in his speech, he lost his virginity at 18 and on that night conceived Adam, who was born with Down Syndrome. Richard married Adam’s 16 year old mother and worked a variety of jobs including in an abattoir to help support his family.
By his own admission, he was not able to cope with the responsibility of a special needs son and Adam was placed into care where he thrived with his foster mum who was a special guest at Richard’s table on the night.
It really was one of those pinch-yourself evenings. Here are a few of my happy snaps along with our usual behind-the-scenes in the MM office:

Here's Mamamia managing editor Jamila and publisher Mia with the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. They're having tea in her yard - as you do.
It really was like the Logies meets the ARIAS hall of fame on steroids. Leaving aside the guest list for a moment (every channel 9 star and music industry name you’ve ever heard of), performances included Noiseworks (Jon Stevens is still astonishingly sexy), The Little River Band, Neil Finn sang “Better Be Home Soon” on acoustic guitar via skype, Olivia Newton John sang Hopelessly Devoted To You and Xanadu (yes she did), Australian Crawl sang “Boys Light Up” and the Voice Judges performed U2′s One and something else I can’t remember because I was transfixed and swoony watching Keith Urban do guitar solos. Oh the hotness.
I had hugs with Delta Goodrem who wanted to thank MM readers for the support she got on this post which she credited for turning around the public hate that bubbled up early on in The Voice.
Nicole and Keith were at the next table with the other judges and I spent the night watching them as much as humany possible. They are as lovey-dovey when the cameras aren’t around as the images you see when they are. He drank water. They nuzzled and whispered to each other a lot. And Nicole got up and rocked out in her chair with everyone else, every time someone performed a classic Aussie song.
Apparently she had a shoot at 7am the next day but was still on the dancefloor when I left at 12:30.
The food was by Luke Mangan – an amazing salmon entree and then my favourite: pie with mushy peas and mash for main. Tomato sauce bottles on every table. I took as many photos as I could. Had a few too many wines and woke up with a bad headache and two children who were oblivious to my hangover and were just as demanding as every other day of the week. My own fault.
Took them to the park, collapsed on the grass and noticed there were quite a few other parents in a similar subdued state. Solidarity.
Was awesome fun though. Richard is truly a legend and one of the nicest guys you could ever meet in any industry. Big heart, big hair. And big something else according to Karl Stefanovic who famously mentioned it in a speech launching Dickie’s book last year.
If you’d like to see more of what’s happening behind the scenes in the office, be sure to follow us on Instagram – our username is MamamiaAUS. And you can follow me at MiaFreedman
PS – And if you missed the news that the fabulous food blogger Not Quite Nigella will be joining us here at Mamamia for the next few weeks, you can read all about it here, her story is a fascinating one. Her posts are coming to you courtesy of Dilmah’s High Tea challenge and she will be sharing mouth-watering morsels of information – guaranteed to transform the entire Mamamia readership into culinary superstars. Ahem.
So that’s what’s On My Mind (OMM) – what’s happening in your life?

I have loved MM for years but something that has been on my mind involves you…since you have recently hired Kate Ellis former press sec & chief of staff I am concerned that MM will become more politically left leaning. I know that Mia is a big Kate Ellis fan & the excitment when the PM visited the site & office was very clear (& I get that, I would be excited too).
I know Mia has always been very clear that all parties get a voice but I cant help but feel a little apprehensive.

Hi Anon and Anonymous
I’m actually really glad to have the chance to address this one, so thank you for posting your comments.
My politics definitely do lean to the left, you’re right (no pun intended!) but there are a team of us here at Mamamia and we have contributors from right across the political spectrum. So I promise you will keep seeing diversity of opinion.
In the past, MM has run an interview with Tony Abbott, posts from Greens Senators and of course we’ve had the PM visit for a day. I love that politicians see this site as a place where they can hear directly from voters and am proud that the debate is always so well informed and engaged.
My responsibility as Managing Editor is to deliver great content for Mamamia readers. That’s exactly what I intend to do and part and parcel of that is presenting a diversity of views.
To be completely honest, I am actually relishing the opportunity to be able to speak my mind and talk about the issues where I disagree with Government policy and want to see change! It’s been a while.
I hope that sets your minds at ease.

Thanks for replying Jamila, & your reply was just what I wanted to hear! Having known a few people who have worked for pollies (Libs) I have found their views are often reflective of the party & they have carried that bias into successive media jobs.
Although I often find commenters on this site very left leaning I enjoy the debate & conversation that a good article creates.
I would love to see a piece on some good LIberal women (yes there are some!) like Julie Bishop, I think she would have something to say to MM readers….
I look forward to some juicy political blustering!….& balance.
loading...
Yes! I am very left leaning (greenies voter left!) but I’d love to hear something from or about Julie Bishop.

Happy Humpty Day to all!
Hope there is some part of Australia in sunshine today unlike WA (its good we need the rain!)

have a great day all!
loading...
That sounds pretty cool re: the festival!
I’d just like to say, that something about your comment (even though it expressed some not-so-fab bits like the rain and the hectic week) made me perk up – you just sound like a lovely kind of person.
Anyway, just felt like letting you know that you brightened my day a bit with (my perception of) your attitude!
loading...
oh thanks Shannon!
happy to brighten up your day! your comments made me smile!
have a great end of the week in your part of the world!

On my mind… When to drop the L bomb? Oh man, it’s difficult. The feelings of it all are bubbling around my stomach and I just feel like I want to shout it out on the rooftop!
Yes, this is lame. I haven’t felt this way about someone in quite some time. When do I tell him? I’m so scared to say it, and him not say it back. I’m tempted to just wait until he does. If he does! Maybe he’s just waiting for me to say it.
Obviously it is different for everybody, but how long tends to be the average amount of time?
Oh golly, what a minefield. But hey, I’m so happy I’m in love!
loading...
Who cares about what the average amount of time is? That doesn’t sound like it’s the average kind of love! I say DO IT!!!
loading...
I said when I just couldn’t not say it anymore! Can’t remember when though (sorry).
loading...
No rules. I’d generally not said it til it was dragged out of me, but my (now) husband and I told each other we loved each other within the first 2 weeks. If it feels right, say it.
loading...
First proper boyfriend I had only waited one month to tell me he loved me, and it was a touch too soon for me, although I responded in kind within a week.
Second proper boyfriend I had to wait four months for the words and felt like I was going to explode. I really needed to say the words to him so I eventually did. In German. While he was asleep.
I would just wait for a really intimate moment (not necessarily sex) when you’re both in a good mood (possibly after a few drinks) and then go ahead and tell him.
Good luck!
loading...
‘in german. while he was asleep’
That is hilarious!
loading...
Not sure why I picked German, probably because I knew he didn’t speak it (neither do I, but I know how to say ‘I love you’ in that language), so if he did hear me / wake up he wouldn’t get it. But I had to say SOMETHING, it was killing me! He later laughed his head off when I told him that I’d been telling him that I loved him for months before he finally said it.
loading...
There is no amount of time – the time just has to feel right! With my partner we said it to each other after a month together! Admittedly by mistake – it felt like the right way to end the conversation.
Been together 5 years now, and we’re getting married in November!
loading...
Guys tend to be slower in that department so I would wait until he says it first. If you say it too soon for him it could freak him out.
loading...
My partner told me he loved me after we’d been together ‘officially’ for 5 days (we met 6 weeks earlier and this also included a couple of weeks of me ‘not being interested’ lol).. we are 15 months in now, moved in together after 6

Today is like ice in Melbourne. Been running up the stairs to warm up.
OMM: Must call my IVF doc to discuss a new round.
How have other MM’s coped doing a drug cycle egg pick up with another small demanding child at home? I am so worried.
loading...
Marg, I wont’ lie, it is tiring. I was on a fairly intensive drug regime though which made me feel sick (metformin, clexane, prednisone, etc etc) and the early morning routine of blood tests was tiring too. I found I just needed to rest a bit more, more naps etc.
I wil say though, that just because you already have one, that this road isn’t any easier. I used to hate when people would say “be grateful for what you’ve go”. Well no, it still hurts like hell. So be kind to yourself.

I desperately, desperately want to be a producer. Just can’t do anything as work is making it increasingly more difficult for people to move into production.
I am looking for work closer to home, but the Central Coast doesn’t exactly have a fountain of media work.. it’s a desert out there!
I’ve looked up cadetships, (ABC’s is closed) internships (unpaid) and lots of jobs in Sydney with overly specific skillsets. “We are looking for a Junior Producer. You must have a working knowledge of HTML JavaScript, HTSL, protocolGSF, at least two years experience on JILTshop and a can do attitude!”
I just don’t know how much longer I can languish in my entry level position without progressing within the company! FWP, I know, but I have been here for 2.5 years.

Moving to the NT on Saturday.. Going to be Nannying on a station up there and my excitement has dwindled also! So nervous and scared of the ‘unknown’ even after travelling snd working abroad for years!!…..

That sounds exciting!

Welcome to the NT when you arrive!
I’m sure you’ll love it!

I’m an ex-NT girl! I miss it heaps! Good luck

OMM: I’m flying to Europe on Friday night. I’m kind of numb to the idea at the moment, even though it’s basically all I have thought about for nine months. My brother just came up to me, looked at me worriedly and said “I think you broke your excitement bone”.. Don’t get me wrong, I’m epically looking forward to it.. but get me on a plane already!!!
OMM2: HECS debt.. I think it’s called FEE-HELP now.. or something. Just opened my latest statement. It’s scary – have done a Bachelor degree (with a little bit of chopping and changing) and launched straight into a Masters – 1/4 through. I earn just under the amount where I have to make compulsory repayments and have recently decided to start putting $20 a week into my super.. Do I switch that focus to my HECs debt instead? Or think about doing both..
loading...
Just a thought, I’m not a financial planner. but your HECS debt only rises with CPI, is my understanding (I try not to look at mine) whereas money put into your super will grow at a market rates. But I would ask a financial planner.
I just remember reading from I think it was the barefoot investor or some such that as HECS is a pretty much interest free debt your money can work better for by doing things like saving for a house or investing.
loading...
Ah true, I’m looking at his book on my bookshelf right now (it helped me get my sh!t together a while back, hence the Europe trip). Will see what he has to say.
loading...
Another consideration to note is that the interest earned on the FEE-HELP is generally lower than the interest earned on your savings account (if you have a good one).
Which means, it’s worth saving your money for a while in the bank and then pay off your loan because you would have actually earned more money in the bank over the same time compared to the interest accrued on the loan.
This is dependant on how much savings you have though.
*NOT in finance so not advice!!
loading...
Good point.
loading...
RE your decision to pay HELP or put in super…if you’re earning under $31,920pa, the government will match your contribution dollar for dollar up to $1,000 (decreasing next financial year unfortunately) – this is the government co-contribution scheme. That’s a 100% guaranteed return on your funds! (Even next year it’s 50%) – you can’t get that on a bank account! If you earn under $61,920 there’s still benefit.
If you earn more than this you don’t qualify for co-contribution, but your funds will earn returns based on your risk profile (if you’re invested in cash – cash like returns, other investment classes like shares, property – your returns are more variable).
Remember you can’t access your funds to you reach preservation age (60 for most) see the ATO for more information: http://www.ato.gov.au/super/content.aspx?menuid=0&doc=/content/42616.htm&page=3
Also, HELP is indexed with CPI, so if that averages around 3% or so, it’s a pretty cheap “interest rate” if you like.
loading...
I earn over 30,000 and under 60,000 so co-contribution is a factor but not a huge one. I think one of my main priorities is thinking long term in terms of financial security in retirement – owning a home (not yet) and having a reasonable amount of super. I know I’ll need to add to my super to have the retirement I want and I want to get into the habit of contributing something consistently – obviously the amount will increase as other financial and lifestyle goals are reached.
loading...
Just a little thought re HECS/HELP, if you are going for any type of loan, including a mortgage, it is still counted as a debt as can impact on how much you can borrow. Most banks offer a free financial consultation so maybe have a chat to them?
I’m sure your excitement bone will be fully fixed by the time you land. Holidays never feel real to me until I’ve actually departed and having that first plane meal
Have fun!
loading...
That is another factor I was considering as well.
I hope so! Surreal to think I’ll be at the Harry Potter Studio Tour this time next week.

OMM: Praying Ecuador grants Julian Assange political asylum.

He must be guilty though if he’s too scared to go on trial in Sweden! Otherwise what’s he so afraid of? The Court system in Sweden is just, not like in e.g Bali.

I feel it is my duty as the Tech guy to correct the file-size post-it.
1024kb = 1 MB
1024MB = 1 GB
1024GB = 1 TB
It then goes Petabytes, Exabytes, zettabytes and yottabytes respectively.

This in the news: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8486125/vic-woman-says-attacker-must-lose-award
It was published on MM awhile ago when the people who gave the award in the first place said they had no right to judge on his past, and chose not to remove the award.
Now the award has been taken off him. I am glad he is in jail for what he did the his ex partner, he deserves this.
But the ACT of bravery and the life he saved years later he did still exists………..

had a little teary to husband because he’d been busy with work and partying a fair bit (we’re childless and in our 20s so its hardly outrageous) but i was feeling a bit neglected and shared this with him. the next day he surprised me at work with my favorite flowers and a beautifully wrapped gift…mia’s new(ish) book!
how could i not love him?!
also just texted mum to tell her she has the exact same jacket as Mia Freedman, she is stoked.

i have been feeling the same way – he has been working/studying so hard over the last 3 weeks!! and got teary last night he has planned a romantic date for us thursday its a surprise
so now we are all loved up! haha

aw lovely! haha it doesnt take much to turn us completey around does it? bless those husbands of ours.

Quite over my work at the moment. We have been in a really bad place financially all year. So, six months of telling debtors we can’t make payment within their payment terms and our wages going in late and super not being upto date and dealing with the ATO and chasing payments from our builders has been exhausting, and to top it all off the Union has contacted us. Even though it’s not my business its almost impossible not to stress.
OMM: My hormones. Please, be normal.

Really worried about a friend who is going through a very tough time and is being threatened by someone. Can anyone suggest a free, confidential counselling service that would apply to a young woman and can advise on relationships?
loading...
Relationships Australia – they are very good and will also help with any additional logistical help.
http://www.relationships.org.au
If there are threats she must advise them upfront so that they will treat this with priority. Good luck and strength to her.
loading...
Your friend, depending on what State they are in, should contact a domestic violence service. The threats should be recorded, and reported to police.
Best of luck to you and her. x

I can’t believe that you managed to find a sysadmin guy with some fashion sense.
Just unheard of. Is he from Melbourne or something?

So, I started blogging again. I stopped over 6 months ago, and had the urge the other day to start again, so I did! You can visit here http://iamevilcupcakeblog.wordpress.com/
Spend 9 hours on Sunday chatting with Gamer Guy. Had so many opportunities to say something and I just couldn’t do it. I clearly don’t have the gene that grows lady balls when needed.
I seem to be getting my house in order! Something must have happened while I was in hospital a couple of weeks ago. I’ve made my bed every day. I’m starting to put all my shit away. Don’t tell me I’m growing up a little???
Hope everyone is having a good week
loading...
You have to tell him! I was in a similar situation a few years back and grew lady balls and it was the best thing I ever did.
No I did not end up with the guy but it meant that I could move on, and I did. I met the best guy ever, got married, had a baby.
I’m still great friends with the guy and so is my husband. In fact my hubby is going to be a groomsman at his wedding this year!
You will remain in limbo and not be open to other opportunities until you say something.
You can do it!!!!
loading...
Grow lady balls! Seriously even if it doesnt work out, he will be naturally impressed with your ladyballs!
I did. I ‘jumped’ a just-friend at the movies, and now we are engaged
Good luck!
loading...
Come to think of it, I have an old pair of lady balls in my cupboard. I will pop them in the post for you this arvo. Hope you dont mind, they are gold and glittery, but they get the job done!
loading...
Please do it!! At least then you’ll know and won’t die wondering.
loading...
You chatted with Gamer Guy for 9 hours and you STILL didn’t say anything? Surely boys don’t chat for 9 hours to someone unless there is some mutual interest. Forget lady balls, it’s time for you to do this for you and believe that you deserve this opportunity and have nothing to lose. Maybe your next B&W post will say something along the lines of BEST – “Finally told Gamer Guy what I’m thinking/feeling”. You go girl.
loading...
That anonymous is me, Gypsy. Clearly having an identity crisis today. MUST GET BACK TO WORK
loading...
Call me. We need to have a loooong chat. x
loading...
take the risk! its scary i know bt u just have to do it!
love and luck to you! xo
loading...
I think I’ve worked out WHY I haven’t said anything . . .
I’m not ready to hear no. I need to get to a point where I’m going to be able to hear no without falling apart. Right now, I would just be SHATTERED.
Thanks everyone for your support with this, I appreciate it
loading...
Cuppy, when you’re ready to say it you’ll know. If he’s spending 9 hours talking to you I think I know how he feels about you.
Just take it slow and keep up the communication. You’ll get there xxx

Great post. I have always thought Richard Wilkins seemed like a really nice person. It was nice to hear a little bit about his personal life, the real story, and not the crap we sometimes get about him in gossip magazines.
