427443 kate hunter 290x385 OPEN POST: New job, new home, new teacupThis is my first ever post as a bona fide member of the Mamamia Editorial Team. I’ve been a contributor and a commenter for years so it’s more than a bit exciting to have my own @mamamia email address (even though my actual address remains in Brisbane). I’m a bit shocked and awed at the pace of things behind the scenes. It’s a bit like when you’ve had a baby – you’d read the books, planned, dreamed, thought you knew how it all worked and then, BANG! NO ONE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE THIS CRAZY. The non-stoppedness is astonishing. But so fascinating. Although I’ve never really stopped working, I haven’t had an actual job for years (interestingly, the last one I had was at an ad agency and Mia was my client) so this is a big leap.

I always celebrated a new job by buying myself a new teacup. There’s a pic in the gallery of the one that marks this job.

Also OMM (On My Mind) is moving house. My desk is surrounded by growing towers of boxes. This is exciting, if unsettling and a big diversion from what we’d planned. I’d thought our place would be home for 20 years. We designed it when the children were small – it’s all open plan and I used to scoff at rumpus rooms and parents retreats because I wanted, ‘to see and hear what the kids are up to all the time.’ Now, I actively don’t want to know. GIVE ME A RUMPUS ROOM.

Despite the chaos and the steepest of steep learning curves, I’m buzzing. I love change; it’s the surest sign of life. Speaking of buzzing, check out the behind the scenes of MM this week:

Mia mixes Easton Pearson skirt, Rag & Bone shoes, and Dotti jacket.

Any changes happening in your world? What’s on your mind? Feel free to discuss anything and everything!

  2. Today is our anniversary, of sorts…19 long years ago, R and I went on our first date…we had known each other for about a year at work, but this was the first time we decided to see each other outside work.

It was a bit of a disaster really…being the insular and slightly vague people we can be from time to time, we both forgot that it was ANZAC day…I think because it was a Sunday…and we were stupid enough to try and see a movie that afternoon.

Now anyone who knows what the centre of Sydney is like the afternoon after the ANZAC day parade, then you’ll know what a stupid idea that was. There were queues 100 deep at the cinema, so we abandoned that plan. Instead we tried to find somewhere to eat…we ended up finding a table around 3pm…we were both tired and hungry…we didn’t talk much…

Anyway, despite the crap first date, we decided to try again the following week…two months later we realised that we meant something to each other, and the rest (as they say) is history…

I guess the moral of the story is, don’t give up on bad first dates… :)

I think I pay attention to ANZAC day a bit more nowadays. One of my uncles was a “Rat of Tobruk”, and two other uncles served in New Guinea…my father also enlisted for WWII, but was discharged when it was discovered that he had somehow managed to enlist when he only had one eye. My brother was conscripted for Vietnam, but was injured before being shipped overseas. So, like many Australians, I have relatives who served our country.

I hate war, but am very proud of our fighting men and women.

(Oh, and congrats Kate on the new job :) )

Way of showing that I needed an extra hour or 2 of sleep, but those strawberries look like a little pyramid of knob ends. Sorry guys…

Congrats Kate! I’m trying to move as well after just 3 months of living in a new state. It’s full on. Hope it all goes smoothly for your family!
