This week Melissa George pissed me off.

A fact which is irritating because I’m a big Melissa George fan.  Last year, her performance as Rosie in The Slap was nothing short of mesmerising.  It was the latest in a long line of roles that once again proved that Melissa George is one of our country’s most talented actresses.

That aside, in the past 24 hours I think she’s sort of behaved like…..well, I’ll invoke dinner party rules and bite my tongue. Let’s just say my disappointment is epic.

It all started when Melissa allegedly had a meltdown during an appearance on The Morning Show on Channel 7 last week.  The Seven Network claim George spat the dummy because  a 20-year-old clip of the actress playing Angel Parrish on Home and Away was aired before her interview.

To get you up to speed, Melissa George threw a hissy fit on Friday’s The Morning Show because the segment referenced her days at Summer Bay.

According to The Daily Telegraph:

“She kept saying she’s had so many bigger roles since Home And Away that it was offensive to talk about it – she even said she’d send Seven an invoice because she inadvertently promotes it through the media,” an insider said.

And here’s what Melissa said in an interview on why she threatened to walk out:

Screen shot 2012 11 13 at 8.12.04 AM Dear Melissa George: why are you so ashamed?

Melissa George on Home and Away.

“I don’t need credibility from my country any more, I just need them all to be quiet,” she said. “If they have nothing intelligent to say, please don’t speak to me any more. I’d rather be having a croissant and an espresso in Paris or walking my French bulldog in New York City.

“I’ve never spoken out about it because I have to be the loyal good Aussie, who goes away and comes home.

“But I’m a really hard-working woman and people have to respect me for what I’ve done … my next call will be to Home And Away to ask them to pay me because nobody does more promotion for that f … ing show than me.”

And now, just yesterday, Melissa hung up on a phone interview when the journalist – cheekily – started asking her about Alf Stewart. Flamin’ heck.

Soooooo.

I get the fact that Melissa finds it boring or belittling that every single time she does an interview in Australia, her start on Home and Away is referenced. But you know what? Suck. It. Up.

Olivia Newton-John is forever known as Sandy in Grease. Kylie Minogue is routinely referenced as Charlene from Neighbours. Tina Arena was Tiny Tina from Young Talent Time.  Jamie Durie was a stripper, did you know?  Naomi Watts smiles politely every time an Aussie journo mentions her “I’d rather have a lamb roast / I gave up Tom Cruise for this!” tv commercial. And I have yet to read an interview with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling or Christina Aguilera that doesn’t recall their early days on the Mickey Mouse Club.

Screen shot 2012 11 13 at 8.12.44 AM Dear Melissa George: why are you so ashamed?

Will Smith, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Everyone started out in daggy roles. Those early soapies or sitcoms or tv commercials are the acting equivalent of your first job at McDonalds.  That’s how it works.

How many times do you think Nicole Kidman has sat and watched clips of herself as a frizzy haired teen on BMX Bandits? Countless. But every time Kidman handles the moment with good grace and humour. Similarly earlier this year Will Smith was asked about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on the Graham Norton Show. Not only did Smith happily talk about the show he stopped filming  17 years ago, he sang the theme song with the audience. Because of that his likeability factor was turned up to 11. Better still,  this is what the A-list Hollywood movie star had to say about people’s on-going, unrelenting affection for his role in The Fresh Prince:

“There’s something about TV that’s different to movies or music. You go into a person’s house …Television has a way of attaching you to people that is extremely powerful. And it’s humbling.”

Melissa, you have gone from strength to strength and left Angel Parrish in your dust.  The press here remind us of your soapie past because well, it’s easy, lazy journalism and  because twenty years ago you played a character who was so very, very loved.  When you come home to Australia we all indulge in a little walk down memory lane.

And it is little.  Eight-seconds in fact.

The Morning Show hosts, Larry and Kylie,  introduced you by calling you “one of Hollywood’s most wanted”.  They raved about you as someone who has gone on to make a successful career on the big and small screen. And then they showed a video featuring clips of you in Home and Away, Alias, Grey’s Anatomy, The Slap and in your new show Hunted.  Angel Parrish flashed onto my screen for eight seconds. And I thought, “Oh, I remember that” and smiled.

So.

So you can certainly ask us all to ‘be quiet’ and to get over the past. And you can accuse us of tall poppy syndrome. And we in return can wish you all the very best in your career. And hope that eventually you take a leaf out of Will Smith’s book.

As Ben Elton – who is now a celebrated author and comedian but originally came to fame at 21 on iconic TV comedy show The Young Ones – said on ABC radio today, “There’s nothing wrong with talking about how you got your start in   your career. If you were a young star, then that’s something to be proud of because it’s how you got your break.”

Damn straight. Take a look at these other stars who started out just as cheesily as Melissa George but are happy to own their cheesy roots…..

Melissa George I’m ashamed of you as an Aussie…
You’ve obviously lost your down to earth Aussie persona to the US and maye I suggest you go back there and stay there. We Aussies pride ourselves on been super proud of all our expats who’ve done so well overseas. But not you love. Your a disgrace to everything Australia stands for. I for one will not be turning on your new show or anything else you will every work on…

To be honest her tanty and comments affect my life so little I pretty much ignored it. I am bewildered why you feel so offended by it, Bec. So you say other celebrities don’t act this way. I’m sure that every time that Nicole Kidman sees her red fuzzy hair in BMX Bandits she would like to burn that footage! She may not be as blunt at Melissa George, but just cause Melissa is honest about, it you feel the need to diss her? I’m sure Nicole still has limitations on what journalists can ask her in interviews. So H&A is Melissa’s. Can’t blame her-that show is terrible!

Yes, the show is beyond terrible but that’s hardly the point here. No one starts by doing The English Patient, the vast majority of famous actors got their head start doing something they would now find embarrassing, but most of them are more mature about it than Melissa.

I agree and I disagree with this article.

I get that it does seem more gracious to suck it up and smile. I see that Will Smith smiling about the Fresh Prince days is a higher road.

But this whole fiasco has pin pointed how pathetic the Australian media is with Australian celebrities. We constantly need to remind them that they owe their success to Australia (which is not the case) and demand thanks. They become ‘our Nic’ or ‘our Kylie’. Unless they make a mistake and then we have a field day belittling them.

It’s not Melissa George who is the spoiled brat – it’s Australia.

Another article about this? Is it really that news-worthy? But anyway, I’ll say something similar to what I did yesterday.

If you think about the hundreds of interviews Melissa has probably given over the years, assuming that most of the time H&A would have been mentioned, she has been polite and friendly in every one (otherwise I’m guessing we would have heard about it by now). Even in this latest Channel Seven interview she was polite and friendly. It’s looks like that whatever got her upset happened off air and she aired her grievances before the interview was conducted. As the paper states ‘the Aussie actress threatened to walk off the set if hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies made mention of the character that made her a star, Angel Parrish’. Bec, the way you write the article makes it sound as though Melissa had a tanty after the interview – which certainly would be silly seeing as no mention at all was made of H&A and it was only referenced in video footage.

She’s only then come out with her ill-said Paris and NY comments in response to Channel Seven dishing the dirt to the newspaper. Granted, those comments are distasteful at best, and it would have been better for everyone all round (especially Melissa) if she just had the strength to stay gracefuly silent. But I do have to wonder how these comments were delivered in context – I couldn’t find the full interview anywhere yesterday. Does anyone know the link?

Wow – way to take something OUT of context!! You do realise she didn’t crack the sh*ts simply because they “mentioned” H&A – it was because instead of promoting McHappy Day and her other more recent work (which was the whole POINT of the interview) they were originally going to make it nothing but a plug for H&A!!! Why in gods name would she want to spend her time promoting and selling a show she hasn’t been on in 16 years when she went into the studio for an entirely different reason?!!

Considering it apparently also happened off air, seems like the Morning Show went out of their way to make the most mileage out of it. Punishing her perhaps for not lying down and taking it like a good sport?

She in particular seems to have her soapie roots dragged up far more regularly than other actors and actresses.

Each time I read about this – and goodness knows it’s getting lots of coverage – I think of Neil Finn. He gave an interview where he has said that every day of his life someone calls him Tim, right from when he was at school.

Every single day someone gets his name wrong, mistakes him for his big brother, and he handles it with grace and good humour. That’s class and kindness.

But an error in the photo gallery: Yes, Ben Elton was in “The Young Ones” occasionally, but the picture you’ve shown doesn’t have Ben in it. Ben co-wrote the series and sometimes popped up. Here’s a clip from an episide in which he appeared:

I always had the feeling that Melissa George was a bit up herself and was faking the “I’m just an Aussie girl” type of attitude in interviews. I think she’s a wonderful actress (she was amazing in The Slap) but there was just something about her I just didn’t warm to. Her true colors are showing now. What a pretentious brat. How about thanking Home and Away for her start as an actress? If it wasn’t for H&A she’d still be roller skating in Perth. Get some perspective love!

Well, thanks for gracing us with your presence Melissa, but if you are going to be this rude to people for mentioning a role you did on home and away: please DON’T come back!

Roles in australia are incredibly scarce and I know a gagillion actors who would give their eyeteeth for the chance of a regular acting role on popular show like H&A (myself included!) Yes she is talented, but she should know better than to act like a grumpy teenager in interviews- coz there’s no shortage of talented actors out there who could take her place in a millisecond!

i find the whole thing a little amusing, because massive stars like will smith and nicole kidman can very happily (or at least act happily) talk about their past shows, because they have well and truly moved on and its just a a bit of fun see how far they’ve come. The thing with Melissa George is, she hasnt done thaaat much, lets be honest. and unlike some of these mega stars h&a is probably still her most defining role. I think she’s madly running from it, and banging on about paris and new york because the fact of the matter is, in 15 or so years since she only has a small handful of roles to ‘prove’ that she is now a mega star.

    Great article Bec!!
From what i have heard in the media, Melissa George has had American citizenship for a little while. Another Aussie actor, Simon Baker (from the mentalist which is on tv now and good old E Street!) also gave up his Aussie citizenship for an American one. These two have strikingly similar interviewing traits. It’s the “I’m too cool for school, please don’t remind me what Aussie soapie I was on, it’s beneath me, I’m an artist” attitude. It’s pathetic.
Everyone needs reminding of their roots, it keeps you grounded and humble and it shows you how far you have come and how much you have changed and grown as a person. Obviously, for these two people, it’s just TOO embarrassing to talk about. Ridiculous.

A lot of people don’t choose to ‘give up’ their native accents. It just happens sometimes when you live somewhere for a while. My husband is English and is accent is no where near as strong as it used to be. And when is family talk him they tease him for sounding Australian. I was the same when I lived in the UK for ages… I came back to Australia and people thought I was English.

As for people moving to America… well, sometimes you just have to tweak some of your words to even be understood by Americans!

My American husband would be very upset if I lost my Australian accent – he loves to use it to pick on me :) He does a great impression of a lot of my family and friends. I have an American girlfriend who’s been in Australia for ten years and I notice she has lost some of her accent too. I can only imagine if you have to speak a certain way for the majority of roles you taken on, then eventually it is going to translate. I’m hanging onto mine – even if we move back it won’t be as strong as before, but it’s part of who I am. My dad has been in Australia for 35 years from the UK and people still comment on his accent. I can’t hear it. The same way I can’t hear my husband’s accent. The just sound like whoever they are. Weird!

I think her manager and pr person need to talk to her quick smart. As her likeability factor has rapidly deteriorated. She may feel justified internally – her prerogative. But how she is coming across to the majority is ungracious, with inflated self importance.

Whilst actors and actresses may like to think it’s talent alone that wins them their roles, it’s also about how well loved they or, how conversely how fascinated by them we are.

Everyone loves Will Smith, and everything he does makes us love him more. So too with Justin Timberlake & Ryan Gosling. Justin’s apology for something that was beyond his control anyway (at his recent wedding) just gave him even more brownie points, and was in alignment with how he shows up publicly.

Lyndsay Lohan got her latest role, not just because she’s talented (Hollywood seems unanimous on that), but because she’s displayed ‘train wreck’ behavior that has caused people to be fascinated. Like Charlie Sheen – who also seems to have likeability & comic talent.

Remember Isaiah Washington? He used to be on the hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy. But because he opened his mouth with a grossly homophobic comment about his gay co-star he was ‘let go’ as the public backlash was huge…and he’s disappeared into the ether. Now he was as good an actor as anyone else.

It’s not lack of talent that destroyed his career – it was his likeability factor plummeting that did.

So Melissa George might want to take some advice from her support team, if not us, since we’re all doing our best to meet her wishes and keep quiet ;)

The original post refers to people like Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, even Isla Fisher, not to mention Rose Byrne – yet, despite being such a ‘talented actress’ and having worked so hard, for so long, Melissa George is rarely spoken of in the same breath as these – she’s never quite *made it* – and I suspect, as indicated by these and other referred comments, that likeability (or lack thereof) might have a lot to do with it …

The Slap was one of my fave shows of all time, actors were fab, but I wont be watching it or getting the dvd for a Christmas present like I was going to. Good work Melissa.

Well said Bec! I really hope someone reads that to her because we all now know that she is far to BIG to read anything for herself ;)

Well said! I have never been a Melissa fan, can’t stand watching her to be honest and this behaviour has only cemented what I already thought – brat! If it wasn’t for Home and Away she would not be able to be walking her dog in New York or drinking coffee in Paris! Be proud of where you are Melissa, but be just as proud of how you got there! Be careful what you wish for though, in wanting people to be quiet about your past, you may find them silent about your future.

I loved her in the slap – and in H&A, however, she’s always been a bit ‘up herself’ to me. her little tantrum didn’t surprise me at all.

Just because she’s famous doesn’t mean she has to please us all the time.

No, but she’s chosen to work in a “people focused” industry, an industry that relies on the support and admiration from the general public. When you alienate them you’re not doing yourself any favours.

She might genuinely feel like people are fixating on a 20-year old role, but there’s no need to talk down to her Australian fans just because they are proud of where she came from. A little humility would have done her some good.

Her reaction did seem disproportionate but this is the same network and around the same time that produced and supported ‘Hey Dad.’ Maybe more to the story?

She’s a, what an Aussie would call, love-o. Get over yourself! So we like to brag a little bit and show off our export. We like to say “Yep, she’s a famous actress who started on our TV!” to show affection, and dare I say it, pride. It’s so hard for our actors to find work OS. Show a little grace and stop embarrassing yourself. What a self important, uppity little so and so!

    Seriously, I love you.
I love your writing, I love the way you think, I love how cleverly you justify things.
    P.S. Don’t be freaked out! I don’t love you in that way! ; p

    Here here!

(and Kylie played Charlene ;) )

I was thinking just the same thing today Bec, about how she should be proud to have played a character who was so very loved……..can’t say the same for the others you mentioned, but I remember crying and crying when Molly died on A Country Practice, it was like losing a member of my family (well nearly).

I don’t know if Hunted has aired yet in Oz, but I am addicted here in the UK and highly recommend it!

    Melissa George rocks in it!

Love this post! Couldn’t agree more. Melissa George needs to be quiet now. But just letting you know Kylie Minogue played the iconic character Charlene not Charmaine.
