A video that made me think. And wince.

GenerationOne is a not for profit organisation founded by Andrew and Nicola Forrest (Australia’s richest couple).  They set it up this year to show the importance of education, training, mentoring and employment as the best means for ending the disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.  This ‘disparity’ is sometimes referred to as ‘the gap’. And it needs to close.

I urge you to take one minute to understand what this means in real terms, for real people. Check this out……

According to the GenerationOne website the

All Australians can end the disparity through real opportunities in education, training, mentoring and employment. Specifically:

  • Education – that prepares you for life
  • Training – industry specific training for a guaranteed job
  • Mentoring – that gets results
  • Employment – that lasts

GenerationOne will deliver these goals in a way that gives ALL Australians a chance to make a difference. For too long, closing the gap has been a government problem or an Indigenous problem but it is an Australian responsibility. If we don’t stand up now and take action and create opportunity, in this generation, we will see another generation of disparity and disadvantage between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

GenerationOne is a mainstream, grass roots movement. It is not the campaign of any party, persuasion or person – it is YOUR campaign and you can  join them by clicking here

On Sunday night 13 year old Madeline Madden was the voice of GenerationOne speaking to the nation in a TV commercial that aired across the country. Perhaps you saw it.

What do you think of the ad? And what do you think of the initiative? Do you think GenerationOne will succeed in repairing a very broken system? What else should be done?
