I found a picture of myself the other day. I mean, like a real, hold in your hand, probably had to wait two days for it to get processed, accidentally spill water on it and it’s ruined, genuine printed on paper, photograph. It was of me, in a bikini taken down at the beach.  I would have been no older than 18. I looked so carefree. I was pretty, wrinkle free and well, young.  And yet, I distinctly remember at the time that I couldn’t have disliked my body more.  I was obsessed with exercise, eating little and socially awkward due to my perceived  “fat” body.

Fast forward 20 years and it’s the old adage, if only I knew then what I know now.  I should have embraced my genetic luck because after three babies, my luck kind of ran out.

At almost 37 years of age and three babies, my body has been stretched, torn (don’t dwell on why) managed to grow some AMAZING boobs, (only to have them cruelly snatched away), developed an unreasonably large backside, shrunk and generally changed shape more times than I care to remember.

I struggle to talk about what I love about my body. How does one write something like that without sounding totally into themselves? I’ve never actually sat down to positively acknowledge any part of my body before. I mean, I know the bits I’m not particularly fond of. The mole on my chin that seems to grow a single, solitary gigantic black hair at an alarming rate, yeah that rates high on my list of ‘don’t like so much’.  I once would have told you my belly button was a bit of a fave, but since it’s been inside out three times, it looks more like an upside down smiley face and is now rather unattractive.

So what then,  do I love about my body? Well, I love that my body has afforded me the luxury to not only carry, but birth three children. That it has remained healthy thus far.  Oh, and if I can be totally self- indulgent for a moment, I like my nose. I think it’s the one part of me that doesn’t quite fit right, yet it distinguishes me.

If I’m honest, I like my body a lot more than I did all those years ago, when I was a young, pretty girl on the beach in a bikini. At 37, I’m much older, have many more wrinkles, lumps, bumps and I’ll be honest, pretty creepy feet, yet I’m so much happier than I was way back then. Because I’ve attained the one thing I couldn’t at the time – self- esteem.

For the body like mine, that changes shape and sometimes needs a little, er help I’m pretty grateful when I hear about jeans that are made to fit the body that lives as much as mine. The new Speciality Denim range from Jeanswest.has every angle covered with the Buttlifter, the Curve Embracer,  a range of maternity jeans, men’s long and extra long jeans, short and petite jeans, tummy trimmer jeans and women’s long and extra long jeans.

I love that my body can change; bigger, smaller, taller, juicy here, skinny there… I know that it will change in different seasons of life, and although it’s not always easy, I love to take good care of my body and when I’m eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly, I honestly do not care how it looks because I know it’s getting what it needs!

My favourite bit, my belly. Its a littl wobbly but all those marks and wobbliness come from carrying my babies. So some days I when I wish to have my bikini bod back, I think of all that I have gained and am quite happy for the love/stretch marks and my jubbly belly!

I am currently loving my baby belly being 29 weeks pregnant with baby #2. With #1 I went out everywhere but this time I seem to be carrying in front and I love that I have kept my curves!

Also, for a long time I didn’t like my long, lanky body (and being called ‘Spaghetti legs’ because of it) but now I am happy with who I am after discovering the words ‘self-confidence’! I am who I am and I am very lucky for that!

I think the thing I have accepted and enjoy the most about my body as an adult is that it can be different things for different people.

For my sons it can be a place to play (ouch, stop pulling Mummy’s hair, my love), a place for comfort, and a comfy spot to sit and watch Bondi Vet.

For my husband my body can be useful for tidying messes, a great hot water bottle on a chilly night, and some adult related activities which shall not be spoken of.

And for myself, in the 15 minutes (if I’m lucky) of solitude I have in the shower, or the half hour at the gym, it can be a temple where I’m left alone with my thoughts, and get to reflect on all the positive things I have done with my body.

I’m fortunate in that my body is able, I’m fit, I’m healthy. I’m a donor so that if the worst were to happen I could give this thing that I take for granted as a gift to someone else who isn’t as fortunate. I might have bumps on my arms, I wear glasses, and Sideshow Bob would be proud of my hair, but it’s my body and it’s what I do with it that counts.

I love my body, because it’s MY body and no one has the same body as me. I am proud of the way I look, I am proud that I look after my body but most of all I am proud of the person I am in it.

I love that it’s curvy, soft and feminine. That it’s easy for my children to snuggle into and strong enough to hold them or lift them over puddles. My figure may not be the same, but it is still the same body my husband fell in love with.

I spent 10 years living with the lovely label of ‘morbidly obese’ and that same 10 years avoiding mirrors. Every glimpse of myself brought feelings of hatred to myself.
I’m 65 kilograms lighter now but most of all I have learned that no good came of my hate or criticism.
Now I love all of me! Every saggy, baggy or dimpled bit!
I love shopping and finding great clothes that flatter my body, I find it to be a challenge that I love to undertake. After spending so long in hate I work really hard not to let the negative in and I’m 100% happier for it.

I have recently learned to love all of my stretchmarks that came about from carrying two beautiful children – which were 9 pounds and 10 pounds. I wouldn’t have my 2 gorgeous kids without the stretchmarks – so they are truly a blessing.

Also, I have learnt to love my overhanging, flabby belly skin as it is a great reminder of the 40 kilos that I have lost over the last couple of years. I was obese not that long ago and after much hard work and determination, I have managed to now be in a healthy weight range. I am now a size 10-12, whereas I was a size 20. The overhanging skin that i have left from having large babies and losing a lot of weight does make it hard to find clothes that fit as the rest of me is skinnier, but I still see it as a blessing.

I love that my body is now in its fiftieth year – yes, really – and at long last I have made peace with it enough to walk around the house naked in all its many splendored, dimpled, paunched and scarred ways and NOT be reviled.

Oh and I look great in my one and only pair of jeans as well.

My 2 year old daughter said recently “Mummy isn’t fat. She’s…warm!” I think she was thinking of cuddling into me and burying herself into my baby-stretched, soft tummy when she’s upset or getting tired. So…I love my warm, soft, cuddly tummy because I love the comfort it gives my kids.

And I love my long legs.

Bern, what a sensational set of abs you are flaunting there!

I’ll never have abs like that, but I appreciate my body. All of it. I don’t know that I have a favourite part, and I don’t love it every second of every day (why the bloat! why does the hair keep growing! aargh!) but I love that it is so healthy … it allows me to go running if I want to, or to cycle to work, or to go hiking or play netball with old friends and new … it’s so reliable, and it even allows me to swim if I can make it to the other end of the pool! I am very blessed to be able to do and enjoy so many things.

I now love the scars on my body. For sooo long I was embarresed by them and tried very hard to hide them. Then I got a new one – my cesarean scar. I love this one the most!

I’ve realised that no one sees my other scars (they are burns scars) except me. Even though they are on my arms and chest I spent so long trying to cover them up but no one notices them.

Being pregnant was the best thing for my self esteem, I learnt to love my body, I’m so glad to have gotten over something that haunted me so much through my teenage years.

I’m secretly a little bit vain – never met a mirror that I wouldn’t preen in front of!

And I am NO STUNNER! But a little bit of me believes that I have a pretty face, and any stray compliments are remembered for YEARS, and held to be totally true.

I have recently (over a good 6 months) lost 10kgs, and whilst I’m still a pretty porky 74kg, I am loving the way I feel – I’m wearing tight dresses and little skirts and I feel fabulous. God! I’m one step away from putting on a bikini in public! Ha Ha! Really, this is how I feel sometimes, but don’t worry world – you’re safe for a bit longer, I’m not totally blind to my inability to pull that off!

Self doubt still is all around me, but Bern is right – a little bit of self esteem can go a long way.

I struggle with my self image. But I love that my body sticks by my yo-yo diets, slightly too much wine sometimes and a lack of sleep. I love that it remains healthy and reliable despite me disliking it so much, who else would continue to love you and remain faithful when all you do is talk badly about it and tell it what you don’t like about it. Oh and that it produced the love of my life, my gorgeous son. The female body is amazing and I will start treating mine the way it deserve to be treated – like a temple.

Sadly, most of the time I am jean-phobic as I stress about my thighs/bum/hips etc. But I am 6 months pregnant and in love with maternity jeans! And people complement me on wearing jeans! Love my pregnant body!

It’s taken me a while to come to the realization that I love my post baby belly. I spent months trying to get rid of it to get back into my pre-baby jeans and then one day I thought ‘I’ve got this belly because I carried my beautiful son in it for 40 weeks!’ I do need to get some new jeans that actually fit now… I can’t wear my pregnancy jeans for ever ;)
