Do you ever feel left out? That the whole world is in on something so cutting edge you’re the only one whose fingertips aren’t bleeding?
It’s time you got to know Pinterest. You’ve heard about it, seen the cute curly ‘P’ on all your favourite websites. Maybe you’ve been asked by somebody you thought you knew if you like their latest pin?
Obviously Mamamia is all over Pinterest (we do love a social network site). To take a look at our board just click here. Don’t forget to sign up to follow our pins while you are there.
But if you still aren’t sure what all these “pins” are about we’ve asked Pinterest veteran (ie has been on it for more than a month) Nicole McLachlan to answer a couple of questions. But before we dive in, check out this video ‘Pinsanity’. This is what happens when Pinterest crosses over to real life:
Why do I need Pinterest in my life?
Pinterest is like the day-spa of social media. No pressure.
Facebook can be exhausting because there’s a nagging fear you’ve missed something? And with Twitter – whether you’re a ‘lurker’ or an active tweeter – it requires you to engagein a speedy, concise way. Pinterest is different – it’s all about prettiness, loveliness and going into a dreamlike trance as you wander through screens of style, humour inspiration and innovation. Also some weird stuff. If you want to engage with other ‘pinners’, you can, or you can ignore them. And they won’t care! How’s that for the polar opposite of Facebook?
How do I use it?
You use Pinterest to set up bulletin boards online. You know all those gorgeous ‘mood boards’ and stylish pinboards you see in home decoration magazines, but that you can never achieve because your own board is clogged up with pizza vouchers and overdue school permission slips? Right. Well, Pinterest is your way of creating bulletin boards that are stylish and useful.
You can set up boards according to any category you like. For example, I have boards called ‘Books I Want to Read’ (if I read a review that looks good, I’ll pin a picture of the book to that board), ‘Presents’ (If I see something that I love, but can’t justify buying myself, I’ll pin it here so when someone says ‘What would you like for your birthday?’ I can answer them). I also have a board called ‘Funny’, which has stuff like this:
Pinterest is also awesome for projects, like weddings, having a baby (ok, that’s not so much a ‘project’) or in my case, redoing my home office. I have a board called ‘Dream Offices’, which has pics of impossibly stylish workspaces from which I might take an idea and give it a red-hot go in my own workspace.
The beauty of the system is if you’re looking for ideas, inspiration, or you’re just nosy, you can search for other boards in the same or similar category, and ‘repin’ stuff you may never have found otherwise. Genius.
How do I ‘pin’ stuff?
When you join Pinterest, they will give you a button that says ‘Pin It’ to put into your bookmarks/favourites bar. Once it’s there (and it’s dead easy to do), whenever you see something online – usually a picture – you want to keep, you click on it and then click ‘Pin It’. If you have several boards, it’ll ask you which one you want to pin it to, and like magic, it will appear, pinned to your board.
Who else is on Pinterest? Is it full of Martha Stewart wannabes?
Any Martha Stewart wannabe worth her salt will be into Pinterest. But that doesn’t mean all Pinterest peeps are craft-inclined. For example, if you’re into stationery, it’s nirvana. It’s a one-stop shop for meaningful quotes and if you want immediate access to 75,000 photos of Ryan Gosling, Pinterest is the place to be.
Having said that, even the most vocal anti-craft campaigner may feel the need to pick up the crochet hook when they *accidentally* come across something like this..
How do I get started?
You need to be invited. I’m not sure why Pinterest does this, but word on the street is they need to regulate the number of users. (Seriously? If Youtube can handle 75 million hits on the Kony 2012 video, I would have thought a website crammed with eleventy billion still images would be able to cope). Ask a friend who’s on it to invite you or just register at Pinterest.com and they’ll send you an invitation in a day or so. If you’re a real person, you won’t be rejected.
Will Pinterest bring more randoms into my life?
Kind of, but the beauty of Pinterest is there’s no need to interact with them.
Will I feel the need to buy stuff?
If you have the online shopping gene, it’s inevitable. If, however, you’re one of those people who doesn’t have a Paypal account (ok, that may only be my Dad), or who’s in it for inspirational quotes and pictures of cats wearing clothes, then you’re probably safe.
What’s the risk of time massive time suckage?
Look, the answer you’re looking for is ‘No risk at all! It’s a hugely useful resource that can totally transform your life by building in efficiencies you never knew you were capable of.’ That’d be the pants-on-fire answer. The lie-detector answer is, ‘Are you kidding? It’s not so much a risk as fact.’ But here’s the thing: If you’re on Pinterest, chances are you’re also on Twitter, Facebook, and probably even Google+ (though, for love of God, why?)
It’s really just another open window in your browser, isn’t it? And a pretty one at that.
Here is a gallery of some of the most popular pins on Pinterest at the moment. Check it out…

I love Pinterest, it’s great fun. In terms of copy right I rarely pin other people’s content.
Pinterest inspires me and that’s a good thing:)

Here is a great article written by a photographer and lawyer about the legalities of Pinterest. http://ddkportraits.com/2012/02/why-i-tearfully-deleted-my-pinterest-inspiration-boards/

I was on Pinterest, but I’m so cutting edge I’ve moved on… Mainly because the terms of use were so scary.
Any image you pin is considered to be owned by Pinterest, and they reserve the right to sell the image. So if you pin a picture an artist took of a cat, and then Pinterest sells the picture to a cat food company and the artist sues, then you are held liable, and have to pay not only your legal fees but Pinterest’s fees as well. It’s so not worth the risk.
Only pin your own photos, or those from a site that welcomes pinning and actually owns the copyright to their images!
Great to browse, though….

Can someone explain to me why pins don’t always show up on the main catergories boards when I pin? It seems most of the time they go straight to my personal boards?
loading...
i am a member of pinterest, but i am reluctant to start using it, as it seems that every fb friend of mine can see or “follow” my usage………is there someway that i can use pinterest without my fb being linked to it?
loading...
Yes you can unlink your FB account from Pinterest – look in your account settings in pinterest and login without your FB account – login separately and then your friends will no longer see all that you pin. x
loading...
Bee, many, many thanks……..i can’t wait to get started now………
loading...
You also need to make sure your FB button is switched off in the settings on pinterest.

i just like looking up pretty home decor ideas from here and party themes etc its a good site

Pinterest was a god-send when planning my wedding! I love it!

Ok, I am so not going there.
I know i’ll get hooked.
Drooling over that little mermaid photo above. How divine is that?
I want one!
Can I request please please can you do one of these on Twitter?
I’d really appreciate that.

Copyright, Copyright, Copyright…
Stop stealing other people’s work.

I was wondering about this.
It all sounds lovely. Right up my alley actually but I think I’ll stick my my pinboards at home!
loading...
Everything (well most things) is actually linked back to its original source. You just double click on the picture and a new window pops up with where it was originally pinned from. Usually this is the owner of the image.
loading...
Hi Zel,
unfortunately that is generally not the case. Have a look below at my response to someone else.
Also just because you link back to someone, it still doesn’t give you a legal right to use their images. They have every right to tell you to remove them and you must comply.
Did you also know that in the new terms and conditions of the pinintrest site, if the images you pin are not yours and a lawsuit is bought against you, not only are you liable for your own legal fees to fight the case, you are also liable for any legal fees the site incures as a result of legal action.
Can you imagine how much it would cost to defend a case of copyright infringement against you and to also have the legal fees of the site your responsibility as well.
There are some really great articles on the net that go into this much better than I can.
I would not go near pininterest for anything. It might be a fun thing to do but the repercussions are not worth it for me.
Please be careful
loading...
Thanks for the insight! Scary stuff. Although i do wonder if they do the same with facebook and twitter etc, as someone mentioned earlier. As you can actually link your FB account to your pinterest, so your pins appear on your wall as well!
My obsession has waivered over the last couple of months but maybe now i’ll just log on and look at everything and just NOT pin it (because its hard going cold turkey)!
loading...
people should know by now the web is what it is – if you put something of your own up there you need to accept that it is now in a world wide public domain open for the taking! If your not happy with this, chose another medium, NOT THE WEB!
loading...
ummmm Wow Jackson, not really sure how to respond to this.
I guess if you forget to lock your back door and someone breaks in then it is ok?
Stealing is stealing no matter what form it takes.
It is very disturbing that people think like this.
loading...
Pretty sure Pinterest changed their terms in the past week and you are no longer liable.
loading...
Don’t get the copyright argument. All the images are available on people’s websites or blogs anyway… Including my own. If I put stuff out there, then I’m happy for people to be Inspired by it. As long as the pin links back to my blog, I don’t take issue.
loading...
Pintrest is the biggest cause of copyright infringement ever.
There is going to be a very very big legal challenge to both the owners of the site and the users who are breaching copyright laws every time they pin something that does not belong to them.
Stop stealing other peoples work and intellectual property.
You would not walk into someone’s house and take a photo off their wall that you liked so why do you all think it is ok to do it in the cyber world.
I hope everyone involved in stealing other peoples work are prosecuted for it.
loading...
but everything you pin acknowledges the source and links back to the original site it was ‘pinned’ from…
loading...
No it doesn’t and that is part of the problem.
Say you pin something, then I like what you have pinned, so I pin it. When it appears on my site it only links back to your site. You most probably pinched it off someone else who pinched it off someone else etc etc.
The other problem with that statement is this.
Just because you might have linked it to the original owner does not make it ok. The original owner is the only person who can pass that image on. You are not allowed to just decide I like it and I will copy it.
Thats like walking into someone’s house, stealing the picture off their wall, hanging it on your own wall with a little note underneath it saying” image stole from such and such” still doesn’t make it legal or right.
loading...
I think this is a very interesting point. You make a good arguement The Fairy.
Could you also argue that it is already happening on sites such as facebook, twitter, blogs etc? And that the owners and users of these sites could too be legally challenged? People post pics they find online all the time to their own pages, and majority of people wouldn’t even see it as stealing.
I think that’s the big issue, ignorance. I remember a while ago someone challenged Sarah Wilson on her website about the pics she was posting with her blogs. Now she always acknowledges where the images come from.
loading...
its no different to simply printing the image off a website/ cutting it out of a magazine – which im sure we are all guilty of…
loading...
Yes, but in that case we are not publicly putting it out there as our work
loading...
Hi Lauren,
The difference with images posted on Facebook and even on google images is that when you post something it automatically links to the original. These companies have made sure that the original owner is always shown. Pintrest does not have this feature. You can link something that you like onto your Facebook wall and it will automatically include the original link, however even doing this, the original owner can still request you take it down and you must comply if asked to do so.
There are some really good discussions about this on the web by people who can explain it much better than I can. It really is worth checking out so you know what is ok and what is not.
There are some very big legal challenges in the works about this.
loading...
Thanks for all the info. It has definitely made me think twice about signing up. I think I’ll give it a miss.
loading...
I think it probably depends on the difference between friends using it between friends – and the pros using it to assist with their blogs/websites/businesses.
Personally i love the idea, but dont have one because im not keen on having everyone else see my pinboards – id prefer if it was a visual collection of my favourite websites and things i love – just for me to browse.
loading...
Actually if you repin my pin it will still link back to the original source. You just need to click twice.
loading...
I love pinning and admiring gorgeous images, I am not selling them or trying to make money from them, just admiring. I don’t consider that stealing, just like watching a youtube video are you stealing it simply by watching what has been put onto a public viewing site?
loading...
Come on Mamamia, you’re a bit behind aren’t you?
loading...
Had it but deleted it, yes it drove up traffic to my site but with everything else I don’t have much time for it and I’ve read of many others removing their accounts due to copyright issues etc.

I love it, we are planning a new home so it is great for keeping ideas together, for that matter so is http://www.houzz.com – a must for architecture & decor junkies. I have recently started writing a blog, http://www.ministeroftheinterior.blogspot.com.au , so it’s ideal for that too. But yes bit of a time-waster, hours spent daydreaming…
loading...
I love Houzz too Jackie, it is the best house website around. Only problem is that most of the products are unavailable in Australia. I spend way too much time on Houzz dreaming of beautiful rooms!
loading...
Pinterest is now the single biggest driver of traffic to my site, bigger than Google and Facebook combined. Just one recipe alone has driven more than 150,000 hits in five months.
Pinterest is ideal for any food or craft bloggers because of the visual appeal and aspirational nature of the site. I also find it very useful to share snippets of my life away from a strictly food-related site. I’m very strict with my time there, only one or two visits a week or else I’d go nuts. I’m slowly pinning up all my site’s photos – all 500 of them.

Love Pinterest! It is so much more than just pretty, it’s bloody useful. With a simple click you can trace back anything you have pinned to where you found it. Gone are the days of trawling through my browser bookmarks wondering exactly which online-shoe-warehouse had those boots I really liked, or which blog had that ace idea for bathroom storage or that yummy chicken recipe. All with a handy picture reference. Ace! Wonderfully, spectacularlly, ace it is.

I do like me some Pinterest and am happy to say that I have been on there for quite some time now and yes, the frantic pinning does die down.
If you like you can follow me

Does anyone know if there is anyway to join if you aren’t on Facebook or Twitter? I’m on neither and have been invited to join by a friend but can’t seem to work out how without joining FB or Twitter (which I don’t want to do).
loading...
Just go to pinterest.com and join – you don’t need wither Twitter or Facebook
loading...
Hi Lana, thanks for your reply but as librarygirl says below she had to create a facebook page. I have received an invitation twice to join and both times all it offers is for you to register through either Twitter or FB. Just letting you know you can’t just log on and join. Unless I’m missing something. Would love to know if I am wrong.
loading...
That is so weird but im hearing that a lot lately – maybe it is a new thing? I joined about 6 months ago and my account is in no way linked to FB or twitter but ive heard a lot of new ppl joining saying it is – I wouldnt like that!!

I created a fake facebook profile using a different name and use a gmail account for email: easy!

Yay for this article. I joined Pinterest 5 mins after getting my new iPhone 4 in August 2011 and I am totally addicted and not afraid to admit it. I am found pinning morning, moon and night – obsessed? TOTALLY
AND – best pinning moment ever? On Saturday when Ellen de Generes started following all of my pin boards! Yippee! I have 17 boards and counting!
Do not waste another moment – get pinning peeps!
Love xx

Ellen – you just hit the big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dog bed is so cute! A good alternative if you don’t like dog hair all over your bed!
The photo of somewhere in Italy is gorgeous. So is that cuff/bracelet.
Might check it out. I wondered about it but didn’t get around to actually finding out about it.

Awesome! I want to follow you now!

I started following you! I love your boards!
This is me: http://pinterest.com/kateobee/

Oh Em Gee – Ellen is following you?! I had a similar moment this week when Emilio Pucci started following mine… I didn’t want to investigate it much further in case it wasn’t the real deal!

That is SUPER exciting! What is your Pinterest name?
Mine is : http://pinterest.com/junoindia/

Oh No! Pic 24 should be Wonder Woman not Super Woman

Thanks Mel… evidently, whoever wrote the caption is a bit of a dud when it comes to superheroes… *whistles and looks away*

Pinned it!
Is that the same illustrator from Hyperbole and a Half?
loading...
I’m not sure…
I found it on Pinterest and laughed. A lot.
Follow my pins here: http://pinterest.com/GAOrganising

Yes, it’s a meme using a stolen (pretty much) image from Hyperbole and a Half. Usually, “do ALL the something!”
loading...
It’s good for businesses too, especially if your business is graphic-based, like maybe a photography studio, or like my plates which have my illustrations on. As long as you pin a fair whack of other people’s stuff (you’ll note the “not for self-promotion” plastered everywhere in the terms and conditions), it’s perfectly fine to pin some of your own work too. ESPECIALLY if your target market is 30- to 40-something ladies.

Oh I am so there………………… will get a lot of cr*p off my FB actually..
Thank you for enlightening me!!

BTW, if you could do a ‘Tumblr for dummies’ I’d love you forever.

YES! I second the tumblr for dummies.

uh-oh. I’ll see you all when I make it back

There is an issue with Pinterest (and all social media reall, but in particular this website) some people have brought up in regard to copyright infringement. People are often simply taking other people’s work/photos/etc and pinning them up without attribution, and then Pinterest benefits (however it makes money) from the use of it.
loading...
At the moment , pinterest isn’t making money and images are credited to the site they were taken from.
loading...
Not entirely true. Pinterest have investors to fund the site and they do test money making strategies from time to time. I believe they’ve also stated somewhere on the site that their long term goal IS to make money (I remember reading it, perhaps in the terms? Not sure.). Additionally, images aren’t always credited, no. Anyone can upload anything – so what’s stopping someone from saving, say, the Mamamia logo to their computer and then uploading it without linking to Mamamia.com.au. It happens.
loading...
It’s a massive issue, and one most people aren’t aware of because they don’t bother to read Pinterest’s T&Cs. In fact, Pinterest has experienced a massive backlash from its users with many actually terminating their accounts.
The issue is so much more than whether or not people are crediting original sources. Even if they are crediting them, they are technically redistributing copyrighted work which opens them up to legal action. The issue with Pinterest’s terms was that they state that the user will not only be responsible for their own legal costs, but also for the costs involved in Pinterest having to represent itself in court as a result of the user’s redistribution of copyrighted content.
A few days ago, Pinterest sent out an email to its users saying that they had updated their terms. They didn’t mention the backlash or copyright issue, but it’s quite clear it’s because of this. Their terms are now in very simple English, and are quite clear about the copyright and liability issues.
I’d recommend that anyone signing up actually READ the terms and then make an informed decision.
loading...
“The issue with Pinterest’s terms was that they state that the user will not only be responsible for their own legal costs, but also for the costs involved in Pinterest having to represent itself in court as a result of the user’s redistribution of copyrighted content.”
WOW! I’m definitely not going there!
loading...
No Facebook account, don’t tweet, but I love Pinterest.
loading...
I looove Pinterest! Went through a stage a while ago where I would pin like crazy every night but lately the obsession has died down so that I drop in when I get the chance or need some inspiration. Not a high maintenance social network but one of the good ones.
loading...
Oh thankgod the obsession does die down a bit…I’ve just discovered Pinterest and I think my family are on the verge of interventioning me…..
loading...
Yes I think I pinned about 1000 pins in my first week – and now I average about 20 pins a week.
loading...
