Yesterday brought the freezer-breaking news that Paddle Pop – who have been dutifully serving the tastebuds of Australians during stinking hot summers since 1953 – have changed the taste of their banana flavoured ice cream.
Being more of a chocolate girl myself, I didn’t give it a second thought until it was confirmed that yes, there have been drastic calorie-reducing changes to that flavour too. What gives Paddle Pop?
This from news.com.au:
After a scientific taste-test on Today, Lisa, Georgie & Mia pronounced the flavour unchanged.
PADDLE Pop devotees are going bananas over a decision to change the taste of one of their iconic flavours….fans who had loved the flavour for decades began complaining the new mix tasted “rubbery” and artificial…
On its website Streets said the Paddle Pops had the “best taste ever” and were full of “milky goodness”.
Marketing director Andrea Martens said yesterday the mix had changed for nutritional reasons.
Vegetable oil had been eliminated and each serve now contained about 27 per cent fewer kilojoules and 34 per cent less saturated fat.
“This proactive change will provide Australian parents and children with an even healthier treat option that is more nutritionally sound than many alternatives,” she said.
“It’s something that we’re proud of and something we believe parents will welcome.”
I consider myself a generally progressive and liberal person when it comes to my outlook on the world. I’m all for innovation and hope and change and all that – godammit, I’ve got an Obama for President poster on my living room wall.
But this? This is down right outrageous. Some things just shouldn’t be tampered with.
And one of them is how things were in your childhood.
I’m a child of the 90s. I was 13 when we cheered in the new millennium and it’s just a fact that things were better back then. What things, you ask? Well Paddle Pops tasted like Paddle Pops are supposed to, for a start.
There was none of this manufactured, they-all-look-the-same-how-do-you-pick-your-favourite-anyway boy bands like One Direction. Instead, there were the Backstreet Boys, NSync, Boyzone.
Sure they didn’t write their own music but they had matching outfits, and hats and coordinated, in-unison dance routines involving chairs. And they didn’t care who I was, where I was from or what I did – so long as I loved them.
Fashion wasn’t high. Only sneakers were. They were platformed in fact – in an effort to pay homage to the Spice Girls and their girl power mantra. We wore our hair either plastered down against our skulls with too much wet-look gel or pinned up with glittery butterfly clips. Pants were easily removable: they snapped or they zipped and they were almost always made of tensile.
In the 90s we didn’t need poor Australian imitations of American reality television because we had Round-the-Twist and Genie from Down Under and Heartbreak High. Everything I know about boys I learned from Heartbreak High. True Story.
Eric was Banana Man, Johnson hung out with all his friends and the current Government could learn a thing or two from Captain Planet about how to sell an environmental message. Seriously, what can kids today learn from a cartoon girl in a pink dress who just wants to explore things?
It was a simpler time. A kinder time. And a time when Paddle Pops still tasted like Paddle Pops. And things were as they should be.
Come on a trip down memory lane with us – do you recall any of these?

Discman
What have I missed? What else was better in the 90s?

I was born in 1990, and I often get nostalgic about how much has changed since my childhood. One of my earliest memories is seeing the Lion King in cinemas when I was 4 (actually, we apparently saw it 4 times. I only remember the one, haha).
I swear, movies are advertised less on TV these days. Growing up, we’d pick which movies we’d see in school holidays by looking at the ads on TV. These days, it’s not uncommon for me to miss movies in cinemas, because I had no idea they were released.
And don’t even get me started on TV. I remember when Seasame Street used to be on for an hour in the mornings. I grew up with Mr Squiggle, Johnson and Friends, Little Bear, Blinky Bill, Babar and Noddy.
I still remember being confused as to why Noddy was cancelled. Depending on who you talked to, it was either because of the supposed Noddy/Big Ears relationship; the fact that Big Ears was called “Big Ears”; or that the opening theme song supposedly insuinated that Noddy was a prostitute because “he’ll pick you up for the night and take you home.” I mean, really???
My friends and I at uni used to sit around and complain about all the changes they’ve made to our childhood.
I mean, THEY CHANGED THE OPENING CREDITS OF PLAY SCHOOL!
Bananas in Pajamas- they are NOT animated!! Franklin however, IS animated.
I remember when Saturday Disney was cartoons on Aladdin and the Little Mermaid! I remember watching Barney, and the Wiggles, The Looney Toons show and IT WAS OK THAT HUMPHREY BEAR DIDN’T WEAR PANTS!!
My friends and I agree that Teletubbies was the end of quality children television.
Music-wise, AQUA, Spice Girls were huge (but wow, looking back listening now, were some of those lyrics innaropriate for children! “2 Becomes 1″ anyone?), Britney Spears released her 1st album…
My brother was born in 1996, and I’m amazed at the difference in our childhoods. I forced him to watch The Wizard of Oz with me last year because he hadn’t seen it (Ok, this was around long before the 90′s, but I was still horrified. I don’t know what house HE grew up in! LOL). I remember watching that movie for the 1st time when I was 5 at my best friend’s house and I fell in love with it.
And of course, now that I’ve seen and fell in love with WICKED, I can’t watch it the same anymore, but I still love it!
OK, rant over. Haha
I liked my childhood and I hate change, so… LOL.

Hi – I made a comment yesterday which I can no longer find – perhaps it’s been removed, or perhaps it’s been eaten by your current technology monster who’s pestering you.
So all I have are the email alerts in my mailbox
just wanted to say thank you to Jamila for your respectful response. I do read MM every day and agree there’s a good mix of content. I had something very bad happen to me yesterday and my words may have sounded a bit harsher than intended – if so, I’m sorry. I wasn’t in a good head space.
I do generally dislike ppl who just bag stories but know the value of meaningful feedback.
Thanks for your clarification Rive.

After school/ before school tv was awesome: It’s A*Mazing, Sailor Moon, Samurai Pizza Cats, Captain Planet, Puddle Lane, Raggy Dolls. I could go on forever.

“There was none of this manufactured, they-all-look-the-same-how-do-you-pick-your-favourite-anyway boy bands like One Direction. Instead, there were the Backstreet Boys, NSync, Boyzone.”
Was that written as a joke???
Also, jelly shoes and paddle pops were around long before the 90s

There may have been a touch of sarcasm Lucinda

If you were 13 at turn of the century, aren’t you more a child of the naughties?
loading...
I don’t know! I would have said child of the 90s and teenager of the naughties but now I’m not sure. You say pot-ay-to, I say po-tart-o perhaps?
loading...
I was 15 at the turn of century and i defenatly identify as a 90′s child
loading...
YOU’RE YOUNGER THAN ME! I feel so old.
Also – who says po-tart-o??
loading...
I was born in 91 and identify with both the 90s and the naughties. Even though I turned 9 in 2000 the 90s still had a huge influence on my childhood!

(This didn’t post for some reason… Maybe it was the YouTube links? Thank goodness for copy and paste. I’ll delete the links but do yourselves a favour and watch the Eternal track)
In a word…Yes!
I loved Eternal’s debut single ‘Stay’ and used to wait for it to come on ‘Video Smash Hits’ before I had swimming lessons on a Saturday morning. I also recall all the boys in my primary school class wishing they were Kris Kross with ‘Jump’ and got such a kick out of singing along to Justin Timberlake in that Mila Kunis film.
Heck, the best songs on my jogging playlist come from the ’90s. Haddaway’s ‘What is Love?’ and the Prodigy’s ‘Breathe’ give me that extra burst. I’m not saying that the ’90s was perfect but it was a lot more innocent and how cool was it wearing overalls and boots? Pre-1995 ’90s for me thanks! I saw a picture of the Backstreet Boys… I got to see them (in their NKOTBSB incarnation) at Burswood a few months ago and it was magic! Jordan Knight anybody? Wow!
Also yes to your photo reel, so many memories. Confession time… I made a childhood themes playlist for Christmas last year for my mates and I and I still listen to it. Tintin, the Babar opening and outro, Rupert etc…Did anyone watch a show with characters named T-Shirt and T-Bag? My age mates and I still sing Captain Planet and fight over who has to shout *Heart* as none of us wants to cause we think being able to communicate with dolphins isn’t as cool when compared to Earth, Fire, Wind or Water which reminds me of “mastodon pterodactyl triceratops saber-toothed tiger tyrannosaurus!” (note that I’m only referring to the 1993 version with the originals). How about the BBC Narnia series? We actually got to watch the Silver Chair at Primary School in the library. I can’t think why though but still loved it and now have the audio CDs, books (and cause I love the soundtrack I have that too). Anyone watch Danger Mouse or Roger Ramjet? I think of the tune to Roger Ramjet and thought nothing of his pill popping ways – went right over my head. Ooh and the Raggy Dolls were cool, even Sad Sack. My first Olympics was Barcelona ’92 as a nine year old and my family and I have the José Carreras cassette and we would sing along to him and Sarah Brightman’s ‘Amigos Para Siempre/Friends for Life’ but I have to concede, the clip has not stood the test of time. Home and Away was huge and the only time I’ve ever been grounded was either in ’91 or ’92 and the punishment was two weeks with no H and A. My favourite couples were Bobbie and Frankie, Sophie and Blake, Lucinda and a cop whose name was Nick I think. Oh the memories but… Here’s to making new memories with the current people in my life who I would miss terribly if I had to time jump back into the ’90s.
PS – I completely forgot to include Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield! I’m a twin and always loved that Sweet Valley High had twins in it!

The ads were so much better like the “open up… Nescafé” one or the “Whenever there’s a pool there’s always a flirt. Whenever there is school there’ll always be homework… When you’re having fun there’s always Coca Cola” and there was a footy version too. “Paradise comes refrigerated real iced coffee oh what a thrill. It’s all in the way the coffee’s percolated etc…” and I don’t even like coffee but my sis and I still remember and harmonise to that song even though it’s would be well over twenty years since we heard it! Here’s a post on some of the old ads and Disney songs if you’re interested http://plentyofapples.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/circle-of-life.html

…. PS the Gulf War. I had friends’ boyfriends who were soldiers over there which was a whole new thing to process – having people my age fighting in a war. Mum also MADE me write into a radio station promo to write to an Aussie sailor including photos. These were actual posted letters! I received a reply from the sailor, regular parcels in the mail containing handwritten letters, photos from his ship, and pressies including perfume sets purchased at markets, and censored CDs e.g Madonna’s “Dick Tracy” with big black stickers over any ‘suggestible’ photos. I was embarrassed when Mum made me do it but it stands as one of the best memories of that time of my life! I got to meet the guy on his return too which was cool (just friends btw)

Off the top of my head, 90s: Alanis Morrisette’s “Jagged Little Pill” album, Friends, Prince’s “1999″ in the clubs and being soooo excited the year when we actually partied as it WAS 1999!!! (heehee) and 1993 the ONLY YEAR Madonna has graced us with her presence…!
Spent time at high school & Uni then business college learning and using Word Perfect only to have it replaced by something called Windows that needed a mouse 6 months into my full time job…
And all the hype about that Y2K bug (which dissolved at 12.01am 1st Jan 2000!)

Stuff Paddlepops. What happened to Barney Bananas?

Um, I don’t have time to read every comment, but is it just me or are there others out there thinking that there are bigger changes to reminisce (and/or be grateful for or hate) than the flavour of an ice cream and boy bands?
Of course everyone loves reminiscing – go wild Jamila but you are mid 20s! Allow enough time to finish your youth until you write about it! My opinion not a fact, I know.
I’m not sure of the value to MM in sharing this post.
I guess a lot of 20-somethings will enjoy it and – let’s face it – things have changed at MM since the switch to News Ltd. Maybe that’s your new target market?
Mia – pls bring back more edge less mainstream content?!
Signed, disappointed
PS I otherwise think Jamila is fantastic – this is not at all personal.
loading...
It’s just you.
134 other people disagree with you.
loading...
Thanks for your comment Rive. I’m not sure if it was meant to be rude, ignorant, inflammatory, factual or what? It’s certainly not helpful in any way without support commentary so I’m struggling a bit.
Maybe you are new to MM or just in general disconnected with the intention of this site?
For what it’s worth I found your comment offensive. You may not have meant it to be so. You may have.
Just a reminder – things that you say impact people. Real people.
I’m at a loss as to what to say to you really.
If anyone else thinks what I wrote was in any way offensive – PARTICULARY TO JAMILA WHO I HOLD IN HIGHEST REGARD – I am happy to hear feedback.
loading...
Anonymous/Anonymouse, I can’t properly discuss with you your reply above because of the dinner party rules.
To keep it nice, all I will say is that you asked a question (..”is it just me..?”) and I answered your question with a fact (“134 other people”) to back it up.
That’s all.
loading...
Hey Anonymous,
Thanks for your comment – we genuinely love getting feedback so I appreciate you writing in.
We try and serve up a bit of a mix each day – sometimes we hit the mark so you’ll love every story and some days less so. Yesterday for example we had a post from Mia about ageing and Tom Ford’s comments, a post from the Defence Minister about sexual assaults in the ADF, I think we also had a post about being a stay at home mum and we also discussed the 730 interview with Tony Abbott. So a big mix!
I know this is just light, fluffy stuff but it’s fun to share old fashions and trends etc. I get where you’re coming from though and would ask you to stay tuned for some awesome content coming today (friday) including a really interesting take on risk in TV programming from the man behind Mumbrella and a great post from Andrew O’Keefe about violence against women.
Jamila xx

SorRy but sunnyboys were a fav at school in the early 80s and pretty sure before my time as well. I was only little and bubblobill had just come out I must have been about 7.

hahaha. Tazos. We used to cut them to be guitar picks. Docs, cons, mum’s petticoat nighties as dresses, aussie 90s bands. Buffy still rocks.

Naww, apparently someone DOES remember the Raggy Dolls!

I loved the Raggy Dolls! Raggy dolls, Raggy dolls! Dolls like you and meeee!
Ah the 90s, you seemed so much simpler. Probably because the hardest decision I had to make every day was whether to wear slouch socks, or a scrunchie… OR BOTH. WITH FLORAL LEGGINGS, AND those little 90s blundstone boots.
Back when before Witchery and Seed made kids cool. Damn this new crop of kids that dress better than I do.

I was 17 – 26 in the 90′s so I am wondering if I don’t fit into the category of ‘growing up in the 90′s’ because I don’t recognise some of this stuff!
Crap, maybe I was out going too much, especially aged 19-23, my brain may have fried!
What I remember most about the 90′s:
Friends
Spice Girls
Ruski’s, Illusions and Fish Bowls
Everything had sundried tomatoes in it at restaurants
Chambray shirts
Step Aerobics
Wearing size 6-8 dress (ah, the good old days!)
loading...
Yes to the SDTs! Other food fads: All dishes had to be arranged in vertigo-inducing towers/stacks, in deep white plates with effing paprika sprinkled around the edges – so chic! Made being a waitress hard!
Also remember:
ecstasy, hair in waxy dog spikes, see-through stocking tops and any music, design or fashion that could be described as ‘industrial’. long black dresses over little white cap sleeve t-shirts.
loading...
Those Adidas trackies….. reminds me of the time I lived on a resort island in QLD for a few years and one week Jeff Fenech came for a holiday with his family. Every night he and his wife and two kids would dine at the Italian restaurant. And every night they ALL wore those tracksuits with TEAM FENECH emblazoned across the back of the tracksuit jacket.
It was so tacky!

Nothing like a pair of jellies to make your feet go slick and black with sweat on a hot summer’s day!

I was obsessed! And the ones these days are too big

I also loved Savage Garden!!!

What about Hanson!? I love this post. Trip down memory lane
loading...
Hanson!!!!!
loading...
NOOOOOOOOO!
I lived opposite a girl in the Uni residences who was right into mmm bop at all hours. I have heard it soooo many times! It drives me nuts!
On that one, we had a game at uni residences to do with music. You know how everyone had a piece of paper stuck to their door for friends to leave messages if they dropped by when they weren’t there? One dorm had a full on competition going where they would leave just one line of one of those songs that gets stuck in your head. You would read it, and think ‘what’s that?’ and by the time you have worked it out – boom, song stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
Think in terms of “when will I,will I be famous?”
loading...
Hanson are here next month touring. Their newest album “shout it out” is kind of amazing.
loading...
Seeing Hanson at the enmore in two weeks! SO EXCITED!
loading...
Same here!!

I remember watching Something About Mary and wanting Cameron Diaz’s hair style. I also loved her fashion.
loading...
HAHAHAHAHA. Ahem, sorry. I was thinking of that scene in Something about Mary with the, er, peculiar hairstyle.
loading...
Hahaha! Yes I didn’t think of that! I meant her haircut!

Not only does my Discman work perfectly, last night I listened to Mamamia radio on my Walkman. I’m not even ashamed to admit that! – My iPod of only a year died last week, while my 2 wonderful Sony products still work 15+ years on!

I have a Walkman too! Listen to it while I exercise.

Since you tubing the spice girls performance from the closing ceremony last night I’ve had their CDs on repeat all day! Loved the 90s. Great trip down memory lane.

And a zig-a-zig-ah to you my friend. Xx

This reminded me of zig zag parts. I’m pretty sure they were cool in the 90′s too!

My most prized possessions growing up in the 90s: my Hanson posters and cassettes(!!!), and my sticker collection.

I want to go buy a pair of Docs and some army pants now.

Still have all my five pairs that are still wearable sitting at my parents’ house. Maroon knee highs, green velvet ones, brown steel capped 10 holes and two blacks

I bought a pair of docs in 1994, they still look brand new. Last pair i bought in 2009 , I noticed the difference: 10 times more comfortable. I don’t know what changed, but it was for the best!

I still have my docs from my uni days in the 90s. I simply cannot part with them.
loading...
I’ve still got my cherry docs, finally threw out the black ones last year though

Has anyone found the radio station on digital radio that only plays 90′s songs? It’s great for a trip down memory lane.

I think on iTunes you can find radio stations and there’s a few good ones there.

My 90′s was Britpop – Blur, Pulp, Radiohead, Space, Bis…

How about the shoulder pads, actually the bodysuits with built in shoulder pads worn with Levi 501s n docs? I remember wrestling with the fastenings of those in many a toilet cubicle rather the worse for a midori illusion shaker or 5!!! LOL

I hear ya Kirri, oh the pain of those little press studs digging into your thighs. And the illiuSion shakers in the days before responsible service of alcohol, practically bucket size!

I could relate to and tell a story about each of the things/people in the gallery. I modeled myself on Buffy and like all Greek girls of my age was totally head-over-heels in love with Alex Dimitriades.
ps. As a teacher I’ve used Captain Planet to teach sustainability. xx

“Fads” a lolly that was shaped like a cigarette for kids….Apparently in the 80s it used to exactly look like a cigarette but then they changed it in the 90s to make it more PC and it was just a plain white stick (which of course we all used to pretend to smoke).
Pretty sure they wouldn’t sell them anymore!!
loading...
You can still get Fads, I bought some at a confectionery warehouse when I did a 90′s theme Lilly buffet for my brother’s 21st birthday.
loading...
I’m so old I remember when they were called “Fags” !!!
(Can I just say I am loving everything on this post right now!!!)
loading...
Same! And they had a red tip on the end as well! The cartoon kids were smoking too – can you believe it!
loading...
My children got showbags from the Ekka with “fads” in them just last week. I remember them in the 80′s, I think they were called “fags” and one end was red.
loading...
Sun-in hair lightened. I overdosed on this while on holidays when I was 13 and rather than end up with “attractive naturally beautiful hair kissed by the sun” I got “orange straggly bits I was tempted to chop off”. Please tell me you can no longer buy it.

You can still get it, I saw it at Priceline the other day
haha

Or lemon juice for the financially challenged!

Scrunchies. In every possible colour to match every possible outfit. Made out of satin, denim/chambray, corduroy, cotton… aaahhhh…
loading...
Oh scrunchies! I made so many sewing on Sunday afternoons with my Mum.
loading...
I had a whole drawer devoted to my scrunchies.
My favourite outfits were those that came with scrunchies that matched the leggings – with a big 90s jumper. I’d wear the outfit proudly with my thick scrunch-down socks (over leggings), side pony tail and bouffant fringe. I thought I was the hottest 11 yr old in town!

I love Keen!
