by BERN MORLEY
My five year old son walked in this afternoon holding a daisy. It was a bit miserable this daisy. Short of stem and missing a few petals but it was the way he strode in towards me, arm outstretched, a little shy yet proud at the same time, presenting this little flower to me, that made my heart skip a beat.
“Is that for me?” I asked with an eager smile.
“No Mum, it’s for the babysitter.” And he walked on past me and sat down in front of the television to wait for her to arrive.
Of course. Emily the 16 year old babysitter who was currently the love of his life. Flowers were always reserved for those we wanted to make the biggest impression upon, how SILLY of me to forget.
But this got me thinking about flowers and what they represent to every woman during the different stages of their lives, whether they be young, old or in between. We are all drawn to flowers and what they represent for our own individual and distinctive reasons.
When I was a little girl, flowers to me were just a little bit magical. When I was only 6, my mother took me to a flower Carnival where I remember being entranced by the radiant and iridescent bouquets. I was fascinated by the rows of vivid colourful blooms that seemed to overwhelm my young and innocent senses. When the Queen of the Carnival threw me a yellow rose from her moving float, I was simply and utterly enchanted. A spell had been cast and I was forever entranced by the magic that a single flower brought with it.
As I grew, flowers started to symbolise different things to me. As a teenager they began to represent that I was special to someone. I still remember receiving my first bunch of flowers from a would-be suitor “just because”. It was a hot and unbearably sticky day that was only punctuated by the heady mix of young love and expectation. I was finally finished with exams for the year and was about to head down to the beach for a swim.
As I rounded the corner, the boy I was secretly in love with was standing there, waiting with a tiny yet charming bunch of daffodils. He was kicking the ground, all nervous like. He looked up and smiled his large goofy smile and thrust the flowers towards me and said nervously “I think you’ve earned these” I took them and we were inseparable for oh, at least 3 weeks. Ahh, young love.
As I grew it often became more about the giving of the flowers as much as the receiving. Friends having babies, birthdays, engagements, single blooms picked from a neighbour’s garden just because I knew they would make Mum’s day. All of these moments, incredibly happy ones. If my Mum were alive today I could think of nothing lovelier than to take her along to Floriade, Canberra’s Flower show that is an amazing celebration of Spring.
In particular, I’d love to show her the vivid colours of the garden bed designs under lights at the Floriade Nightfest. Held over 5 magnificent nights, each featuring their own amazing bands and hilarious stand-up comedians, the Floriade Nightfest is the highlight of Canberra’s unique flower Carnival.
If like me, you like to wander the night markets, you would have to be sure to get there as the sun sets to experience the true wonder amoungst the vibrant blossoms. Or, also like me, if you enjoy a cocktail (or two), you would simply have to take a seat in the Butterfly lounge and partake surrounded by the brilliant perfumed displays under lights.
Held over four spectacular weeks, the theme for the 2012 Floriade is Style and Design with this year’s Ambassador Leona Edmiston to officially launch the 25th Anniversary of the event that will showcase an exciting range of new attractions to stimulate your senses including demonstrations, a fantastic children’s’ program and garden presentations that outline the infinite garden transformation possibilities. The full program can be seen HERE. There truly is something for everyone.
There is often something inexplicable about the way a solitary flower can make you feel. The Floriade Carnival is a vivid reminder of all that is good and right with the world. Don’t miss it.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “The earth laughs in flowers.”
Floriade is Australia’s biggest celebration of spring. This iconic Canberra event runs for 30 days over the months of September and October. It showcases one million flowers in bloom, set in Canberra’s Commonwealth Park and entry is free. We welcome over 400,000 local, interstate and international visitors each year to Canberra’s spring festival. For more information visit the official site.

Thankyou so much Bern. x

To me, buying or even receiving flowers simply means “I care about you”.
I think I’m going to buy a bunch for my mum on the way home.

I really respect you for choosing your financial situation over getting presents for your birthday. It takes guts to make that sort of decision. I’ll cross my fingers for you, and hopefully someone will buy you flowers.

Yay! I’m going to Floriade tomorrow!

I received a single rose from my boyfriend just last week! And for no particular reason either – just wonderful.
I buy my mum flowers every time I go to the markets because they are such a delightful luxury to have in the house and it makes me so happy to think of her enjoying them for weeks on end.

As a little girl, through to teenager & then adult, my grandfather always cut roses from his garden to give to me. I thought I was the most special girl. He passed when I was in my late 20′s, but the day of his funeral, I cut 1 rose for me & another for him & layed it on his chest, to thank him for being such a wonderful person & to say goodbye.

My husband never buys me flowers on Valentines Day, my birthday or any other day when advertising says you should buy flowers. He buys them randomly, on his way home from work, for no particular reason. They’re the best ones: the flowers you get for no reason at all.

Well this is going to sound terrible but the last bunch of flowers I got was from my ex when I was recovering from surgery in February. He was trying to win me back and I put them straight in the bin. Haha. They would have been expensive too. Serves the lying bastard right. :p

My husband brought flowers home for me on Monday. He bought them to make me feel better about him leaving to visit clients for a couple of days. He’s a sweetie.

I had 3 sweet little neighbourhood kids knock on my door a few Sundays ago and excitedly tell me that they were selling flowers they had just picked from their next door neighbour’s garden. When I asked about the cost, I was surprised by their savvy-ness
“These flowers are 75cents” (pointing at a sad and wilted unidentifiable flower)
“Uhh…how about something a little healthier?” I asked pointing at much perkier flower
“Well, they’re $1 but if you buy these other ones for $2 then you’ll get those for free”
“Sold! You had me at free!”
I’ve never seen little faces light up so brightly. $6 lighter and a couple of odd looking flowers later, I was feeling pretty good and I think the kids were too. I heard one of them say “wow! We made so much money! Let’s spend it on lollies!”
Happy days.

My Mum always buys me flowers for my birthday, and after jumping up and down for long enough, my partner has finally gotten the hint that I would like to receive them from him as well. So, it’s birthdays and Christmas from him. For some reason he thought it was an old lady gift! I can’t believe it took me so long to convince him that I would like them. I’m a botanist for goodness sake!

Sadly, flowers represent itchy eyes, headache and a runny nose for me. It actually frustrates my husband because he wants to buy them for me but knows he will cause suffering rather than pleasure. It is annoying as they’re so beautiful…..I made balloon flowers once. Not quite the same……

Every time I had a baby I ended up suffering from the flowers. I love them, but not what they did to me in a small room.
The last flowers I bought were orchids and I have no issues with them!

I’d had major, life saving abdominal surgery (they basically had to slice through my stomach muscles) – my father-in-law brought me the most beautiful bunch of flowers but they made me sneeze – not sure why, just one type of flower I’d obviously never been in contact with before. Sneezing + abdominal surgery = me literally crying in pain with every sneeze – we had to make up an excuse about why my hubby took them home because I didn’t want him to feel bad!

Would he like to buy some for me??? My bloke’s bought some for me once – but the fortnight of nagging to get them was too exhausting to try again (I was housebound – I normally buy my own. I Am Woman, Watch Me Buy My Own Blooms).

boyfriend bought me flowers last week, there is a place he drives by on the way home from work that do little bunches of gerberas, i get given them occasionally and am always ridiculously appreciative when i do.
for anyone who hasn’t read ‘the language of flowers’ by vanessa diffenbaugh, i totally suggest you do, it is such a wonderful read.

Today
My close friend bought a bunch of flowers to give me when we met up at uni because last night was a bit of an emotional roller-coaster (seeing as I found out that my first love/guy who I thought I’d end up getting married to has just got engaged!) She is so wonderful!

Sounds weird but I’d rather not get flowers from my boyfriend, the tightwad in me thinks they are a bit of a waste of money for something that dies in a week. I let him get them for me for anniversaries, valentines and birthdays before I gently broke that news to him, haha. He didn’t mind. I like giving him little gifts though, favourite chocolates, beer, nic nacs of stuff he likes etc.

Whenever I go home to Melbourne for the weekend, my mum puts flowers next to my bed. So lovely.

The last time I got flowers was on my birthday back in May- from one of my Year 9 students! I cried when he gave them to me, it was such a nice surprise.

What a sweet teenager! Where do I get one?

Ugh. This is going to sound dreadful, but the last time I got flowers was when my husband died and that was 3 years ago.
Before then? Never.

Consider this comment a big bouquet from me !

I give my wife flowers every week and a present of jewellery, perfume, nic-nic etc most every other week.
Hence…we don’t have enough vases and she has too much jewellery, perfume and nic-nackery.

My husband cycles to the markets every Saturday morning and buys me 3 or 4 bunches of flowers which he carries home in a backpack. He has been heard to say that that earns him enough brownie points to get him through till at least..Sunday afternoon!

Ah Floriade. I grew up in Canberra so have lots of memories associated with it. Last year I met this man at floriade nightfest who I fell madlyin love with..unfortunately the attraction was mutual but not the love
i wouldlove to relive that night again this year..

My husband bought me flowers ( a VERY rare thing indeed) a few weeks back. I had a bad couple of weeks, had to work on a weekend and he was going interstate for work the next day.
When I got home there was a bunch of gerbera waiting for me – the exact same flowers and colours as my wedding bouquet.
We’re going to Floriade this weekend and cant wait – its always such a fun, happy reminder that Spring has arrived.

My husband was the last one to buy me flowers, July last year. I’m not big on over the top displays of affection so I was extremely surprised to come home to find them!

I love Floriade. Its a good excuse to spend the weekend in Canberra which I always enjoy visiting.

Hubby buys me flowers every year on our anniversay.
Just celebrated 20 years.

Never, my life is quite sad.

Today! It is our 14th wedding anniversary

In Autumn my husband planted me a garden bed of ranunculus bulbs, my favourite flower. They are in bloom at the moment and I have three vases full of gorgeous fresh flowers from our own garden, feeling a bit special at the moment.

My boyfriend had a bunch of flowers delivered to my work last week and then surprised me that afternoon when I found him waiting by my car at work and taking me out for dinner.
Not letting that one go!

A keeper for sure

I love Floriade! I still have pics when I was a little girl posing in front of the tulips… I used to go on an annual pilgrimage with my family!

One of best friends sent me flowers three months ago on my last day of work. I had been made redundant and she knew how upset I was. We live in different towns so instead of a hug she sent flowers. They really made a crappy day so much better.
My husband every now and then surprises me with flowers as he knows how much I love them. He even took me to the tulip festival a couple of years ago which was really good of him. He even enjoyed it as well.

I got a huge bunch of flowers delivered to my door from my best friend last night because I’ve recently broken up with a guy who would have never bought me flowers and she thought i deserved them. I think she’s a keeper!

Two weeks ago my husband walked in with a bunch of gerberas for me, just because. I love that man…

Mrs Bull is the regular recipient of flowers, but I often wonder what the equivalent spontaneous show of affection or appreciation is for blokes.
When hospitalised recently, staff pitched in for a wonderful card, and then a female staffer hospitalised shortly after got a massive bunch of flowers that we all pitched in for. There needs to be a masculine equivalent that is not just a slab of beers or card I reacon.

We send flowers to women and men when they’re sick at my work. I think it’s the gesture rather than the flowers themselves that makes people happy. Anyway who says that men don’t like flowers? I know lots of men who are into their gardens and growing flowers.
My friend got me beer when I was sick earlier this year and it was awesome.
loading...
Mr Bull – I buy my husband flowers occasionally when I just want to say “I love you” in a different way. There’s no reason it has to be a one-gender-way gesture.

A bouquet of Bacon! I usually buy women flowers and men chocolate, but I guess it’s good to mix it up. Or give both ; )
loading...
A bouquet of Bacon, lol, gold, I found that incredibly funny, until I also realised that I would genuinely like to receive one of those. Or maybe a slab with a cute bacon bow. You are releasing my inner Homer.

Well, WB, this is your big chance to help us out! What would you recommend?

Mrs Bradley generally gives me gifts that can be used in the kitchen….when I prepare her dinner.
So my gift is a backhanded gift for herself.
loading...
I send blokes balloons. Our local shop puts a giant freckle as the weight. Perfect!
