A confession of sorts.
I like to think that when you come into the world of “Em’s words” I create a space where you all can feel better about yourselves.
I imagine you must read how out-of-control, irrational, pathetic and flawed I sometimes am and think to yourselves “Jesus, I thought I had problems”… This is a public service I am happy to provide AND today is another such example of me falling on my sword. Get ready to love yourselves sick.
There is a very clear marker I have in my life that indicates how I am traveling. Where I am at mentally, spiritually and physically. For some of you this marker may be alcohol, chocolate or perhaps a lover. For me? It’s Twilight.
Yep, go on JUDGE ME. I have transcended embarrassment over this one. Yes. There is a direct correlation between the amount of times I watch Twilight/New Moon or read the series and how I am getting along in life.
What I am trying to say is: I love Twilight.
At first I resisted the Twilight saga. I’ll admit, it was hard. I have had a love of fantasy novels and movies my entire life. I grew up on The Never Ending Story, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, Flight of the Navigator, Xanadu, The Wizard of Oz, Willow, Edward Scissor Hands, Beetle Juice, Star Wars – you get the idea. I also obsessively played Zelda on my Nintendo and had a disturbing collection of unicorns and care bears.
For a fantasy nerd (Ferd) like me Twilight was a given. Alas, I let the more intelligent, highbrow literature loving friends of mine, shame me into looking down on it like everyone else with a mild intelligence level or who was over the age of 16.
I would feign boredom when the young kids who worked at the radio station would pledge their allegiance to either Team Jacob or Team Edward and ignored the release of the first Twilight movie all together. It was on a flight between Dubai and Rome that in a weakened state I gave into watching the movie and since then… things have never been the same.
Fear not, for those of you who hate Twilight, I am certainly not going to delve into the story line, which Team I am on, or even mention the fact that I have pre-ordered Eclipse on DVD.
I am also completely aware that the books are written by a 35+ year old Mormon woman living out her repressed sexual fantasies through her teenage fictional characters.
The main character Bella is a sh*thouse role model for young girls. She requires CONSTANT supervision as she repeatedly lands herself in near death experiences and finds it endearing that her vampire boyfriend likes to position himself inches away from her face, staring maniacally at her while she sleeps.
I am well aware the text is not comparable to Austen or Bronte or even good old Enid Blyton however I DON’T CARE.
I watch it and read it so my brain can rest. It takes little to no effort to submerse myself in and as I am a romantic at heart, it really is one of the greatest love stories I have ever been involved in.
Edward says things to Bella that I think deep down a lot of us yearn to hear. Even though Bella is needy, clumsy, plain looking and of mediocre intelligence, the glorious creature that is Edward loves her unconditionally for who she is on the inside.
Trite yes but I feel something a lot of us can relate to. The fantasy that the goddess/god we have lusted after could look past our perceived imperfections and see our pure hearts and amazing intentions… or something like that.
When I’m feeling neglected by my Husband – I turn to Twilight.
When there is nothing on TV – I turn to Twilight
When I miss out on jobs -I turn to Twilight.
When I’m feeling flat – I spend the day in bed watching Twilight.
I’ve noticed lately I have been watching it a lot and have been dipping in and out of the books again. It forced me to look at the reasons why. As I mentioned before, the amount I read and watch it directly correlates with the status of my life. Twilight not only helps me escape, it also forces me to address why I need to escape.
BRILLIANT!
The moral of the story this week is as follows: If there is something you love that those around you mock you for, hold your head up high and tell them to feck off. I am surrounded by intelligent, hipster, self important, New Yorker reading, multiple degree holding wankers (AKA friends that I love dearly) who take themselves far too seriously.
I have let go of my attachment to what they think of my reading habits and instead of hiding my copy of “Breaking Dawn” inside my “Book of Longing” by Leonard Cohen (which by the way is an excellent book, some of the most beautiful poems I have ever had the pleasure of reading) I proudly bandy it around openly, proclaiming my love for it.
My point is, love what you love no matter how daggy, low brow, cheap, tragic or embarrassing others may judge it to be. Who cares what they think anyway? I don’t. I know that I have the love of a good man to keep me going..
And his name is Edward Cullen. (Team Edward all the way, man).

This made me smile. I love Twilight too and I get teased about it all the time but I don’t care. Throw in Glee and Vampire Diaries too!

What I forgot to say was………I’ve always thought that “Twilight’s Bella” is quite beautiful.
I can see why Edward’s character was attracted to her.
What would be really interesting is a movie or TV series where “Edward or Mitchell” was attracted to and moping soulfully about someone who looks like me……..or you…..
Now THAT could be a worldwide phenomenon …..don’t ‘cha reckon ?.

We try to watch every pop/film culture “thingy” at least once and I enjoyed the 1st Twighlight (at least, the teenage girl inside me did), but my husband was rather unimpressed and since he tends to pick the movies/series that we regularly consume, I’m not up-to-date with the rest of them.
However, that teenage girl I mentioned would have been…….and the precocious child reader that I was would have devoured the Harry Potter books and movies….AND I would’ve dressed in my black cape & “Harry Potter glasses” while doing it.
If pushed, I say I’m “Team Edward”
Or to be more precise – “Team Mitchell”
Anyone who’s gotten into that amazing British series about the ghost, the werewolf, and the vampire sharing a house in “Being Human” will know who I mean……..Mitchell the vampire …….he with the dark scruffy hair & 5 o’clock shadow and lilting Irish accent – played by Aidan Turner…. When Peter Jackson searched for “the next big thing” to play a sexy dwarf in “The Hobbit” he didn’t have to look far, and so here’s the successor to Viggo & Legolas . Both Aidan and Richard Armitage will have Hobbit fans giggling for at least another 3 years.
We only watch “The Very Best” in TV series these days…lol.
I mean, we really do……I don’t even want to think about the recent American version of “Being Human” – I mean, why bother ?
We’re watching “Boardwalk Empire”, & “Homeland” and we’ve watched “Breaking Bad”, “Game of Thrones”, “The Newsroom”, “Episodes” “The IT Crowd”, and all of those “Larry Sanders Show” eps…….but I’ve gone off topic…….
What IS it with vampires ?…….or VAMPYRES – yikes !
Pale or moody, wise , interesting, dangerous…….Hell !… Mitchell savagely murdered dozens of people but because he was handsome and usually terribly sad & repentant afterwards – we forgave him for it……just like that vigilante serial-killer Dexter…..We can’t bear the thought of them getting caught ……so, what does that say about our “inner-teenage selves” ?
Maybe we never quite grow up…….lol.

I think it reflects the way we wish men were! Able to see through the Rosalie’s for the many Bella’s out there, who don’t get a shot.

I watched the first Twilight movie, but it was so bad I haven’t bothered with the rest. I’d prefer to watch the Game of Thrones series, at least the actors can act. Watching the tv series inspired me to buy the books. So worth it, the books are brilliant too. Now I’m just waiting for the next season to show on Showcase!

I still haven’t recovered from the Red Wedding

I just watched the last Twilight. I read it before it became a phenomenon, and I really liked it. I will watch it and I might read the books again one day, but I am not ecstatic about it.
Em, if you love fantasy, get the first season of Once Upon A Time. Based on fairy tales, it is a series about Snow White’s evil witch who casts an evil spell on all the characters and sentences them to a life trapped in a town called Storybrooke. None of the characters know who they are, and are kept from their happiness.
I won’t give any more away, JUST GET IT!! I am hooked.
edit: Am I the only one who would admit to being Team Carlisle?

Heck yes, Team Carlisle!

For those who do enjoy the Twilight books, it’s likely you already realise this BUT, just in case – there is a novella that was realised to very little (read: none) fanfare or advertising called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (remember the attacking vampire who stopped fighting who they were going to “adopt” but whom the Volturi sentenced to death?) And you can also read the start of Midnight Sun on her website, which is Twilight from Edward’s perspective…..
loading...
I really hope they make a movie out of the Bree Tanner book!

I love to hate twilight. For me it’s like my fascination with My big fat gypsy wedding/kardashians/snog, marry avoid and all those shows that I find so much wrong with but can’t turn away from.
I find so much wrong with twilight and the books make me so incredibility angry but I can’t turn away. I saw the last movie on Saturday and walked out so frustrated but no doubt I’ll watch it numerous times and re-read the books again and again. I love deconstructing them as well and find myself in many conversations with a friend about why buffy is much better than twilight!
edit: team jacob!

So with you, Em – not so much Twilight but not hiding what you love. I’m a massive geek, I love sci-fi and I’ve just spent the last two days getting my geek on at Supanova. Possibly one of the greatest weekends of my life, as I met one of my favourite actresses and made friends with a whole bunch of random people who share my love for geekdom. My friends, however, and even my family gave me hell. Apparently since I’m a relatively pretty 20 year old girl I should spent the weekend getting plastered instead of singing a tv show theme song at the top
loading...
Was that the Adelaide Supanova? i was so close to packing my bags and heading there for the weekend to meet James Marsters but had to spend $1000 on my tooth in the past week.
Was devastated! I heard it was amazing!
loading...
Imagine my horror when i realised that twilight was not a book written for adults but for teens. My 13 year old niece wanted to borrow the series to read and i was miffed that she wanted to read such a grown up story… Awkward.
I’m an original twihard, and i’m not ashamed to say i booked a holiday to NYC a few years ago to coincide with the release of breaking dawn and a meet and greet with Stephanie Meyer.
Team Edward btw….

With you all the way! Love to read and just fell head over heels in love with the Bella/Edward love story. Could not help it. Unfortunately the movies kind of ruined it a little (Bella and Edward just were not cast properly for me!) but still – love it. Bella the character does annoy me somewhat though.
I get a little annoyed at the people who turn their nose up at books that aren’t literary masterpieces. I read to escape. I LOVE to read but if I’m stressed, there is no way I can focus on reading something like LOTR before bed. That’s why these books exist and are so popular. So be proud of what you read!! It’s better than not reading at all, I say!
I’m off to read some Harry Potter now

Em….. I think we were separated at birth! Love this post!

I love Twilight. I love the books, I love the movies and despite several people expressing their “judgement” of me for doing so, I will continue to love it. My friends and I meet for every movie, then we have coffee afterwards to “debrief.” So sad that it has ended at the movies, but I have my books, my DVDS and also the fact that I met Robert Pattinson recently to get me through! Twi-hard adult- yes that’s me!
loading...
I’ve read the books (on the advice of my son’s ex gf) and have seen all the other movies with my girls. The stories are crap in both the books and movies. The end of the last movie is ridiculously frustrating. They should all have a good battle, but that’s just the action fan in me. Even though it will be crap, I will see the last movie and will probably enjoy it in a way, like I did with the others.
loading...
Oh no, I have been holding out, resisting, hoping not to break down in a moment of weakness but I reckon I’m probably just denying myself a world of comfort and indulgence. Might have to check them out then!
loading...
I never feel the need to explain or justify my love of Twilight. I love what I love & that is that!
I too resisted at first because I couldn’t handle how much media the stars got , it seemed mental! But eventually curiosity got the better of me & I fell hook line & sinker. I re-read the books often but rarely go back to the movies after I’ve watched them the first 5 times.
For the record I’m team Edward but love a shirtless wolf

Team Edward! I love this post Em!
I am off to see Breaking Dawn 2 on Wednesday with my 57 year old mum and 40 year old sister, we are going to Gold Class and are all so bloody excited!
Love love love love love it!
loading...
First things first. Team Jacob. All the way.
Loved your article Em. I am a total Twihard adult. In fact I’m off to see the movie for the second time this week. Nothing to be ashamed of girls
loading...
I could not love this article, or you Em, any harder!
I am constantly on the defensive about what I read, watch, listen to etc. I don’t even know why people care so much. Live and let live, my friends…
Team EDWARD all the way… and a little Team Emmett, too.

I am so in love with paranormal romance and urban fantasy books and my friends just don’t get it. They also don’t get my Sims 3 obsession. Which is ridiculous because how can you not love the Sims!?
loading...
Alice, lets be friends. We can watch Twilight and play Sims 3
loading...
I am so wishing that I could get to the new movie sooner rather than later, and so embarrassed by how much I want to see it!
I love this post Em! For the record, my ‘team’ changes depending on my mood. When in need of pure sunshine I’m ‘team Jacob’. When wanting some old fashioned values and romance, then I’m definitely ‘team Edward’!
I also hope that any daughters of mine grow up to be Hermione fans, rather than Bella fans – she is an atrocious role model for girls! Yet somehow I am still hooked…!
loading...
As long as you’re not the other way and look at me strangely because I’ve only ever gotten through 40 minutes of the first movie and been put off by the “acting”! I’ve also never read any of the books. Same goes for Harry Potter! I like a lot of different kinds of books but both of these series just left me uninspired
loading...
How can you be put off books by the acting in the movies??
loading...
She didn’t say she was put off the books by the acting in the movies. She said she only got through 40 minutes of the movie because of the acting. She’s also never read any of the books. Separate statement.
loading...
I thought Twilight was a load of crap… but I did read the whole series because I just felt like I had to finish it.
I love Harry Potter.
And I have issues with people who claim to be uninspired by books they have never read and movies they have never watched.
loading...
Same Lucinda. I read the Twilight books but I’ve only seen the first movie. The books were just painful but I finished them.
loading...
I always thought Harry Potter needed a good editor. Interesting ideas though. Last book could have been reduced by half.

My husband, comedian that he thinks he is, bought me a poster of Edward and put it on our bedroom wall for me. Note: I did actually keep it (hidden)
loading...
Lol, my husband, also a comedian, bought me a LIFE size cardboard cutout of Edward Cullen. I loved, but also kept it hidden!
loading...
I’m so jealous of your cardboard cut out! Seriously! Wish my husband would buy me one.

This is how I feel about Christmas. If I encounter any kind of stress from October onwards I throw myself into thinking about and planning anything to do with Christmas. It’s my childish happy place that I use to escape from the world.
loading...
Magnificent.
Read the books, saw the movies, own the DVD’s.
My favourite thing to do when stressed and cant ‘switch off’ at night, listen to the Twighlight stories on Audiobook, on my ipod.
Love it.
loading...
Same here!, Twilight on audio book in the middle of the night instead of lying awake and stressing. happy place
loading...
Oh….Em !
You should write comedy !
loading...
I hear what you’re saying Em….but give me The Vampire Diaries any day. Now there are some boys to lust after
loading...
Firstly, team Jacob. Secondly, the way I can relate to this more is because of my love of Hanson. Since they disappeared from the pop charts in the late 90′s I’ve hidden my obsession. My fan club membership card, my massive collection of cd’s most people don’t know exist. It’s taken me about 12 years of hiding it to finally announce to the world this year (pushed by their aus tour in september, which of course I attended multiple shows of) that I am a Fanson through and through! No more shame for our guilty pleasures. If you love something, own it. I feel better for it even though I’m now introduced to people as, “this is Lauren, don’t add her on facebook unless you want hanson videos in your news feed everyday”.
loading...
Slightly off topic, but I am downloading new books onto my kindle, anyone know of some good ones?
My guilty reading pleasure is the True Blood books.. trashy but so good.
loading...
TEAM EDWARD FOR LIFE! Why be a snob and mock others? Live and let live. Now excuse whilst I go play with my Edward and Bella barbies.
loading...
“I watch it and read it so my brain can rest. It takes little to no effort to submerse myself in and as I am a romantic at heart, it really is one of the greatest love stories I have ever been involved in.”
Exactly- it is an easy read/watch, it lets me ‘turn off’ my brain and escape from reality.
The romantic in me is Team Edward all the way, but there is a small part of me that thinks Team Taylor (Jacob- but lets face it Taylor Lautner and no shirt definitely deserves a few cheers)

I also tried my best not to join in the fanaticism that is Twilight but in trying to understand my then 12 year old stepdaughter, her father and I decided to watch the first movie when it appeared on TV one night….and from that moment in I was hooked. I have now read all the books and spent last weekend trapped inside re-watching all 4 movies on DVD to ensure I was prepared for the release of the next movie…which I will be watching as soon as my uni exams are over. I read/watch Twilight to escape from reality during uni breaks and I can’t possibly read anything more trying or my head will explode. I love it, love it, love it…all the while recognising that they are NOT the greatest literature or movies ever created and that Bella is indeed a terrible role model for young women out there…something that I have tried to make clear to the now 14 year old step daughter so that she and her friends won’t try and emulate Bella in the hopes of finding their own sparkly vampire type.

Love this post Em!
Mercilessly mocking the twilight movies is a sport for me, so I am a bit sad there will be no more terribly acted/LOL movies. But it is a bit of fun, and if people recognise just how (to term a phrase my friend posted on FB yesterday) Fantastically-Lame Awesome the movies are, a good bit of fluffy excapisim.
I am a fan of the books though, even if they contain such a monumentally annoying (bordering on pathetic) character like Bella, and the many faults with the series, stalkerish traits etc, because there is an interesting storyline, some great characters, and nicely done world-building.
However, Harry Potter kicks the sparkly arse of Twilight any.day.of.the.week. (Hermione rules!).
loading...
I am exactly the same. My shame is further compounded by the fact that I’m an English teacher, so a lot of people judge me for liking “crap”. But I know it’s not the greatest thing ever written(however, when compared to 50 shades its literature!) – but it’s an engaging story. I don’t have to think, I can just enjoy that world and romance. Same reason why I go back to Little Women, The Hunger Games etc. I don’t WANT to read good quality all the time – sometimes my brain turns to mush and I want something easy!
loading...
Em – I love everything you write. Hilarious! Those first four paras are gold
I am pretty out and proud with everything that I read. Often I find I am in the minority for actually READING. So I think anyone who reads on a regular basis needs a pat on the back regardless of content.
My guilty pleasure is make over shows. Fashion, interiors, you name it. So long as a before and after is involved I am in heaven!
loading...
Before/Afters are my reality TV porn for sure.

My confession, about once a year, when I’m feeling the need to return to a simpler time, I re-read the entire Anne of Green Gables series, all 8 or so books, strictly in order. Don’t judge.
loading...
This is me all over! My twelve year old sister just started reading them, too, so the temptation to get back into them over the summer is very high. Although, quick question: do you include the Chronicles of Avonlea in your definition of the ‘series?’
loading...
No, I don’t count Chronicles of Avonlea – I do have it, but I’m not a massive fan of short stories in general, so I leave it out. And it would mess with the order – when would I read it? First? Last? Somewhere in the middle? Are you also an Emily fan?
loading...
I don’t count it either. I think you’re supposed to read it after Anne of Avonlea, but Anne’s only really in a couple of the stories and they don’t add anything to the plot of Anne of the Island (frankly, I think that the whole Chronicles of Avonlea thing was just a way for L.M. Montgomery to make a quick buck.)
I’ve never read the Emily series. But if my little sister’s hogging the Anne books this summer…
loading...
No judgement here, I love them and return to them as well! However, I happen to think that Anne is beautifully written. I also love Twilight (just saw the new movie last night) although I will not argue that Twilight is great writing – just a great story. I think Anne is both!
PS – I also love Emily, although I haven’t read them in ages …
loading...
Do you think Twilight will have Anne’s staying power? I’m going with no. And rightly so!
loading...
Not judging- I do the same thing
loading...
Lol love this- team Edward! Hehe
loading...
Honestly, I’m one of those who looks down on Twilight but I can’t really argue with any of this. As long as you recognise it’s not great literature and you recognise what a terrible role model Bella is, etc., I really have no beef with anyone who wants to use Twilight as a comfort read/movie. Sometimes you don’t want to think too hard and a book like this or one you’ve read many, many times before (or both) probably fits the bill.
I also read a book this year which was way, way worse than Twilight, in terms of plot development, character development and the depiction of an unhealthy relationship. It gave me a new appreciation of Twilight, I’ll tell you that much!
loading...
LOL, I have to ask… it was one of the Fifty Shades books wasn’t it? Now there’s some literary masterpieces….
loading...
No, it actually wasn’t, though I had a feeling after I posted this that people might think it was! The book I’m talking about is called “Beautiful Disaster” and it’s by Jamie Maguire.
loading...
Really? I found the Fifty Shades and the Crossfire trilogies to be far worse in all those aspects you mention than ‘Beautiful Disaster’.
Oh… actually, plot development was pretty bad. Haha. But I still loved it… and the two others series I mentioned too.
loading...
Well, I haven’t read Fifty Shades or even heard of the Crossfire trilogies, so I wasn’t really comparing them to “Beautiful Disaster”. Maybe I would find them worse.
But “Beautiful Disaster” made me flat-out angry more than anything. Anyone who objected to this astonishingly unhealthy relationship was portrayed either as a bitch (Kara) or competition for Abby’s attentions (whoever that guy was). There was no room left for “wow, maybe this guy is actually just an awful person”. And then the ending…ugh.
