When it comes to diversity in advertising, there is pretty much, you know – NONE. Whether it’s diversity is body shapes or ethnic origin or age – magazines and billboards just don’t bear much resemblance to the world we see outside our windows.

But every so often the advertisers do something unusual. Instead of merely paying lip service to the wave of public opinion in favour of diversity – they actually get out there and they do something.

Like this advert from swimwear brand Dolores Cortés in the US. They’ve chosen a 10-month-old Miami girl, Valentina Guerrero, to be the face of their 2013 kids ads and Valentina has Down syndrome.

dckids SURPRISING: Our favourite ever swimsuit model.

“People with Down syndrome are just as beautiful and deserve the same opportunities. I’m thrilled to have Valentina modeling for us,” Dolores Cortés – the woman behind the brand – said

Apparently it’s the first time in history a high-end fashion label has used a person with down syndrome as their main model. The company is also planning donate 10 percent of the profits of this collection to the Down Syndrome Association of Miami. Beautiful. Bravo Dolores Cortés.

We’re very impressed and Valentina? Well we think that she’s adorable.

Valentina is adorable, so beautiful. This comment will accrue many hate comments I’m sure but it has to be said… she doesn’t look like the ‘typical’ DS child. She looks ‘normal’.

Just like they use light skinned black people in advertising.

I’m pretty sure Pumpkin Patch had a gorgeous little Down’s baby several years ago modelling in their catalogue.

My guess is that someone in the company is related to a child with Down’s and they are using the platform they have to make a statement…and raise money. And good for them…it’s no different than the reasons behind why a lot of people get involved in a charity or a cause.

I’m wondering if kelle Hampton of enjoying the small things blog might have been an influence as she is from Florida is an amazing photographer and has an adorable toddler with down (not this toddler though).
