Do You Like This Story?

best 380x254 Best and worst of the week. by NATALIA JASTRZAB

I don’t know about you but my week has gone past in a blur of late nights, early mornings, cold weather and heavy jackets. There’s been lots of things on my to-do list and my diary’s filling up. My eyes have been tired. Very tired.

I took refuge in a coffee shop with one of my most delightful friends last weekend; we huddled in a corner and shared chocolate milkshakes and a huge plate of cheesy nachos. I told her I was feeling blah – no other word for it – and she said, “of course you are! It’s a blah time of year!”

But on Thursday morning I got off the bus wrapped in only two layers instead of my usual 17 – and you know what? I wasn’t even cold. The sun was shining a little bit brighter and I didn’t stop for my regular hot chocolate. In the office, I sat at my computer and almost felt overheated. Everyone was happy and buzzing with energy.

Something else that made me happy this week? This post. My two favourite things in the world – Ryan Gosling and crayons – COMBINED! Could you ask for much more from life? I didn’t think so either.

I also spent a whole lot of time reading the comments on this post – I’m a sucker for a good public transport story after spending such a ridiculous amount of time on buses, otherwise known as the place where personalities go to die. Miserable places, those buses.

There’s been plenty of other things happening around the office and the site lately, too – take a look:

Mia wears a Sportsgirl top and scarf with Sass & Bide pants.

What were your best and worst of the week? What’s on your mind?

I don’t want to talk about my worst part of the week and I didn’t really have a best part, instead I’ll tell you about a weird part.
One night I had a dream that I thought I had won a mamamia competition so I headed straight for the MM office. When I got there I was told that I didn’t win so I got angry and stole MM office supplies!

Best: Mid week public holiday, and gorgeous weather, so we took the kids to the beach and just had a wonderful day.

Worst: I am really struggling with my medication. I upped the dose again this week as I was starting to feel very sick again. Today I’m going to try dropping it. I am so over this cycling of symptoms! Yes I am down about it, but I challenge anyone who feels exhausted and nauseaus every second day to feel ok with it. I’m also feeling so despondent about my weight gain (from the drugs mostly). I’m also anxious about our upcoming trip to see family as I wonder if I am well enough yet.

Worst: having to write a stat dec saying that I have been too sick to look after my children, but hoping that that leads to a best that means we will get our childcare feeds refunded.

Best: Meeting all the lovely Brisbane MMers last Sat. It was a great night! And such lovely women.

Oh sadly, I don’t think anyone did :(
But it was a great night. There were 11 of us who could make it. There was lots of laughter, lots of talk about babies, and politics, and children, and pregnancy, and boob jobs, and just stuff in general. We are hoping to catch up again in September, this time with children in tow (most of us seem to have children almost exactly the same age).

I didn’t see anyone take photos either! I think we were all too busy chatting. It was uncanny how many of us who went had kids of similar ages. It was a great night. And lovely to meet everyone. I wonder how Michelle went with Baby 2 on Thursday, whether she had a boy or girl.

Sorry to hear you’re feeling the side effects of your medications – exhaustion & nausea are horrid, hope it passes soon.

Totally, totally agree…this is heartbreaking :(

What an awful situation for everyone involved, I just don’t understand how this man cannot have the final say in how he chooses to end his life. We can humanely put down our beloved pets to stop their suffereing however we don’t have a say with our loved ones.

If anyone has had the tragedy of watching a loved one die, it is not pleasant and never like in the movies or death notices you read in the paper “he/she died peacefully in their sleep”…the image never leaves you. Ever.

In certain medical cases, I 100% support the notion that we should be allowed to decide our own fate.

Worst: My husband moved out leaving me at home with our 21 month old. He’s been having a mid-life crisis for about 6 months. Turns out he’s also been having an affair for 3 months. He thinks that with some ‘space’ we can work it out. I’m not so sure. Venting feels good!

Sorry for your pain Home Alone. My theory is that when your kids are babies it is one of the hardest times for a marriage. I hope he gets over his crisis. And I hope you can get over his affair. I went crazy for while, around the time my daughter was 5, son was 2 years old and I turned 40. We got through it but it was a tough time for our relationship. Best of luck.

WORST #2/OMM: My sister. The poor thing- she twisted the muscle that connects your neck to your shoulders the other week and was in immense pain and couldn’t move.
Then on Monday night whilst half asleep and on her way to the bathroom, she walked into a wall and gave herself a concussion, and now yesterday she woke up at 1am super sick and has gastro.

    Hey MMers!

Best: Working from home today. Still in my jammies – woohoo! Kid free this weekend.

Spent a bit of time with Cute Plumber this week. Mostly been brilliant. Cept – and I guess this is my worst – he seemed to get kinda comfy and familiar pretty quick. We went out for dinner and kareoke with friends on Wed night and maybe it was because it was our first night having a few drinks together, but I just found him not as gentlemanly as he had been prior. I know this totally makes me sound like a princess, but he was a bit too blokey bloke maybe…loud, called one of his mates while we were at dinner….anyway – I msgd him yesterday to tell him I felt more like I was out with him as if it was footy with his mates and not a date….he said sorry and that he didn’t realise and not much more since.

This is what dating is all about – checking out people to see if they’re right for you. You are totally doing the right thing.

Susan Jeffries has a great book, she wrote Feel The Fear… on how women usually try to impress men on dates rather than what they should be doing which is sussing their date out to see if he’s right.

wish I’d read that book before my last two relationships!!!! Could have saved me a lot of heartbreak. xx

People will suggest the Aquarium or the Zoo – but I say go for a trip on the Manly Ferry.
It’s cheap, showcases the harbour and you get off in Manly for lunch, ice-cream, a trip to the beach and a gorgeous coastal walk along the sea-front to Fairy Bower Beach. There is also an aquarium at Manly which is very underrated and nowhere near as crowded as the Darling Harbour one.

      Have a wonderful time!

BEST: An amazing Year 11 class who have handed in the most astonishing assessments – a joy to read and mark! Also, only four weeks until I go to Italy and Greece. Been waiting for this since January…..

WORST: Farmer Wants a Wife. While marking papers last night, it was background wallpaper until I felt compelled to pay attention. All of my feminist principles were reeling at the sight of women openly competing for a bunch of VERY average men (and that’s being diplomatic). The sight of one male overlord looking on while women scrabbled around in the dirt picking up potatoes to win a date with him was just pitiful and humiliating.

WORST: Passive-aggressive behaviour from someone who claims they are my best friend. It all started to go pear shaped when I went to a conference and had to bring another friend with me. She’s been funny with me ever since. That and the fact that I’ve been busy every weekend for about 2 months, so I haven’t been able to see her.

Here’s the thing. Any time that I want to see her, I have to contact her. It’s always me contacting her. I’m the one always driving to her place. And when I get there, she spends literally half the time on Facebook playing those fucking games! Why am I doing this?

And then, the only time she contacts me is to be passive-aggressive. Seriously lady, stop living your life through me. You have a family. Do stuff with them! Get your kids away from their tv’s and Nintendos and DO SOMETHING.

BEST: Tomorrow night I am going to the Vanguard in Newtown to see Star Wars Burlesque. I’m so excited I could just poo my pants!

BEST: Dinner with my mummy tonight :)

BEST: Starting to get on top of things financially. Very very slowly.

  22. Broken Hearted

WORST 1: Got dumped by my boyfriend of four months on Saturday because I listened to a manipulative friend that I have known for 18 years who hated him and thought he treated me like shit and told me that every day for three months. I gave him three days after the breakup and called him. Spilled my heart out, explained how rubbish I felt about it and how I would do anything I could to win back his trust and respect. He told me baby steps needed to be taken and it couldn’t just go back to normal. He told me that his parents and brother thought he was the bad guy and that his Mum was really mad at him for giving up on such a lovely girl. Then I texted him that night thanking him for listening and letting me explain how I felt. He then texted me back and said that we just needed to be friends and that who knows what would happen in the future and that he needed me in my life. So heartbroken that my error in judgment could have cost me the best relationship I could have ever had. I wrote him a 6.5 page letter and put it in his letterbox yesterday whilst everyone was out of the house and put his 4 month anniversary present in it as well so I could get it out of my sight. I have heard nothing and its now 10.22am the next day. Not sure what to do but wait.. this sucks. I have lost my appetite and I feel like all my clothes are hanging off me.

WORST 2: I feel as if my friends have just forsaken me at a time like this and now I’m back to square one, having no true friends.

WORST 3: Being so behind in Uni work because of this scenario.

BEST: That its Friday, that I’m alive and breathing and that I have a roof over my head. Hopefully, hitting rock bottom will mean its all up from here.

Oh broken hearted, hugs to you!

Most of us have done something like you did, to the detriment to the relationship – you arent alone. Realisitically you have done the right things since, and made every attempt to let him know how you feel. Now just let time heal his wounds. He might need to think about the letter before making his decision either way – and him thinking about it is a good thing.

Its better to have the delay and know that he is as sure as you, than to have him rush back and possibly second guess himself down the track because he hadnt processed it all.

No matter how it turns out, i would turn that frenemy away. That friend is not a true friend, because a true friend wouldnt mess with your relationship – they would support you no matter what, and without judgment.

      Good luck x

Oh you poor thing! I was in your situation this time 2 years ago- Bf dumped me, then both my grandparents died in the next few weeks. I got far behind on uni work, didn’t want to eat etc.
My advice? Do your uni work, it can be a good distraction and gives you something to aim for. And do not sleep with your ex (as I kept doing) as it will only stop you from moving on and confuse you. I hope this helps x

He dumped you – so what did you do???? And why does he mother think he’s in the wrong? Why did he dump you?

Anyway breaking up with a guy is really tough but it’s hardly rock bottom. Maybe he’s not the one you should be with. It can’t be all your friends fault can it?

I feel that way about friends too, that I don’t have any real ones. I see people who have so many good friends. But I do have a couple who have been really good to me. There are times in life that we may not have friends but that does change so please don’t feel too sad about it.

        Hi orly,

You need to have a self managed superannuation fund in order to buy property. You can buy property both here and abroad. Have a chat to your accountant or financial planner if you would like further information.

        Cheers,

Best: got asked to write an article for the CROWN Project (Creating Radiant Outgoing Women Now – http://thecrownproject.blogspot.com.au/) on my happiness theory. I will get published soon. It is nice to be contributing to something like that.

Worst: The weather has been cold and grey (and rainy) here in Canberra and I’m feeling the same blah that Nat talked about. I’m hoping for a big weekend of hibernation – so sleepy!

Best: my best friend and her boyfriend are coming to Sydney to visit for the weekend! It has only been a week since i saw her but it feels like forever. And I’m so excited I get to show my new place off to someone! And just to be greedy and have two bests, how good is the weather in Sydney today?? Certainly made the walk to work very pleasant indeed. And it reminded me of home.

Worst: not really worst, also just feeling a bit blah. I moved to Sydney from Brisbane two weeks ago, and the change in routine etc is challenging to say the least. I had a very busy social life in Bris, and Since I have about 2 friends here, i have nothing to do! I desperately miss my friends and family, and for god sake I just want a CUDDLE FROM SOMEONE. On the upside, I know it will get better and just takes time. Phew. So tips/suggestions for meeting super fun people in a new place are very welcome.

hi, where do you live in Sydney? there are quite a few people in Sydney on here and I think someone was arranging a catch up.

It won’t take long for you to meet people. And in the meantime do the tourist thing – take the ferry to Manly; visit the Paddington markets on Saturday and visit the local art galleries and cafes; what else???

      Other Sydney people please contribute…..x

I’m not usually the type to rock up somewhere full of complete strangers, but I’m going to do it and step out of my comfort zone. Nothing ventured nothing gained!!!

I never usually comment on these things but this week has been quite momentous and I thought why the hell not! So my best so far has been my ‘brilliant’ canter transitions at my riding lesson this week with my dressage instructor who rarely gives out comments as generous as brilliant. And my worst is my uncle who was battling pancreatic cancer lost his fight on Wednesday night surrounded by his wife and two sons. So sad, his funeral is on Tuesday, its going to be a long sad day, lots of tears… he was a real larrikin and loved by many.

I’m so glad you received lovely letters from happy parents :)

I agree re good and bad feedback – I had a bad experience with AirBNB and the host of our NYC accommodation. I published a long heads up on my Facebook profile as well as my blog page, detailing what went wrong amd warned people to take care when booking through AirBNB. Not sure whether I’ll blog about it though…

Did you book somewhere with good reviews which are genuine? I think that’s one of the important things. Check out the reviewers profile to make sure they are not just freinds of the owner. Contact the reviewers too to get their feedback.

also check out your host if you’re sharing – look them up and friend them on FB and speak to them on the phone.

If you are renting the entire property on your own (not sharing) ask the owner to send you recent photos – ask them to put the days newspaper on the furniture so you can be sure the pics are current.

With Airbnb you pay via credit card before arriving so you really need to check it out thoroughly. And have a back up plan too of local hotels etc, can’t hurt.

Sorry about your bad experience with AirBnb. I stayed with airbnb in New York City for New Years Eve this year. We booked originally in June last year. Turned out who we booked originally cancelled our booking in the end of October! You can imagine the stress of finding extra accommodation for nye in NYC. Airbnb were amazing, they gave us $100 credit towards our next booking. Were incredibly prompt with their customer service, and you cam speak to people for the price of a local call We ended up getting an even better Manhattan Apartment, for a great NYE price! The apartment was exactly as described. No problems at all. I also used Airbnb in Washington DC and Chicago, which were all like a home away from home. I always booked places that had reviews. I know Airbnb have worked really hard to protect both guests and hosts, I would definitely use again for future travels.

Best: we picked an engagement ring. we decided to go super traditional with engagement ring (princess cut solitaire) and I decided yellow diamond yellow gold wedder so I’m on the hunt for that… help?!?!?! Where can I get one?

Worst: We talked about it and looks like our engagement will be longer than a year… damn money! We wanted to have a super short engagement.

Katie- *do* have a super short engagement! The sooner you’re married, the sooner your life together begins. Think about it – what’s more important, the scale of the wedding or the being married part? Do a small, simple and meaningful wedding (suggest strongly that you read this and the replies: http://www.mamamia.com.au/social/are-weddings-a-waste-of-mone/), and have the big showy one in 5-7 years when you have a child or three – they can be there to see mummy looking beautiful and daddy looking deliriously happy and be in the photos.

Why does their life together only begin when they are married? What about all the time they’ve been together until now? I think have alonger engagement and have the wedding you really want :) though I do like the idea of having a wedding after kids so they can be a part of the wedding, that’s sweet. I don’t think id want to wait that long though!

I 100% agree with this! Have a short engagement and have a non-expensive wedding; ours was $26,000 (and so much fun, don’t get me wrong) but I just really wish we had a cheaper wedding; there are ways to do it sweetly and beautifully without spending so much. Check out younghouselove.com/wedding-album/ they did a cheap big wedding fantastically! I would feel such a sense of achievement from doing it cheaper ha.
Having said that, everyone will tell you what to do for your wedding (like I just did ha) just enjoy it, it’s only one day and the only important thing is that you get married at the end of it all!

I hope life doesn’t begin after marriage! We’ve been together 8 years. We would love a small wedding. However, we both have large families that we are really close to, so when you count up all the people we dearly want at our small wedding – its about 100!!! Eep!

I’m finishing my masters degree this year, and the Brisbane job market isn’t exactly flourishing right now, so we don’t even know where we will be.

He says that I just seem to want it all, right now (is that a crime?). And I do – I don’t want to wait 18 months to get married. I want to start having babies then!

Arrgghhh!! I just want to be married to him!

You need to prioritise, if you want to get married now then do it, there are ways to do it without spending a fortune. I personally wouldn’t wait 18 months, not because life begins after marriage, but because long engagements seem so silly and unecessary.

Once I got engaged, I wanted to be married within a year, not waste 2 years of my life planning a wedding, and that’s what we did. Btw we had over 100 people at our wedding and it wasn’t expensive, you just need to look outside the square.

Nat, you are so right – it has been a ‘blah’ time of year. I felt the change mid-week when the sun popped its head out and the wind died down and everything started feeling… springy.

I am so ready for it. This winter has felt brutal!

    Worst: Illness.

Best: Took time off work and cancelled things and am almost 100% again. Managed to read a few books while I recovered – it’s been a while. Felt so good to rest and be reading again!

Best #2: Yesterday was my bf’s and my 4-year anniversary. We aren’t married (or even engaged) but have really hit our stride in the last few weeks and it feels amazing. Going out to dinner tonight to celebrate. I love that man!

Best #3: It was his birthday last Sunday and I totally nailed the gifts. Nothing crazy, just simple gifts, but they were received perfectly and he was delighted. I love giving apt gifts!

OMM: My mum’s upcoming birthday. I love her more than anything but she is a bit hard to buy for. How can I possibly convey how much love I have for her and how wonderful I think she is? Trying not to put too much pressure on myself to give her the perfect gift, but see above…

Best #1: Plain packaging! I work for a tobacco control not-for-profit and we’re all still on a high after the result in the High Court this week. Plain packaging will save lives and some of my colleagues have been working on this for 20 years. Did you know tobacco claims six million lives a year? And most of them are going to be in developing countries whose governments don’t have the resources or power to stand up to the tobacco industry :(

Best #2: I’m flying to the US in three weeks :)

Worst #1: My brother’s dog had to be put down yesterday. She was only five and I looked after her a lot so she was sort of like my own dog. I don’t think I ever understood how hard it is for people when pets die before this. I’ve cried more in the last week than I have in the last year and I want to sob every time I think of her.

Best: home from my trip to London and new York. Loved it, but it’s nice to be home. I shopped so much, bought amazing clothes and jewellery and are at two of the best restaurants in NYC. My speech at the University of Bristol was deemed one of the best at the conference by the academics there. A great experience.

Air New Zealand provided amazing service on all of my flights, and I wrote about it here:

I just read the letter that you wrote and thought it was terrific. I’m 100% of the opinion that if you receive really great service, as well as really bad, that you should write to whoever provided it and let them know. I received a number of such letters (good ones) when I worked as a midwife, and it would always really make my day, and offset some of the less nice things that I had to hear. It makes people so much more willing to go out of their way next time for someone.

A few years ago air NZ was criticised in The Listener magazine for its service, CEO Rob Fyfe responded creatively, with a video in sign language, (fairly exciting to me as I am a sign language interpreter). Search ‘CEO Rob Fyfe responds’ on YouTube if you want to watch the video.

What breast implants, it doesn’t look to me like Miranda has had anything done. Do we have to bitch about her even if we have to make up lies?

As for Jennifer, it’s well known within the industry that she’s had extensive plastic surgery since her early days. She has a a good doctor as the work is not obvious (for now). I just had a look at the new pics and they definitely look like implants, it’s pretty obvious on the pictures where she is in a pink bikini on the catwalk. She certainly didn’t need them, her body was perfect as it was, but I guess she didn’t see it that way.
