Happy Friday and welcome to one of our favourite posts of the week – best & worst. It’s time to reflect on what’s happened during your week – the good, the bad and the in-between. There are no “rules” – just join in and tell us about your highs and lows.
Remember that if you want a chance to host best and worst, email info@mamamia.com.au with your full name, headshot and a short bio (include any links to your blog/Twitter etc), and we’ll take it from there.
Worst:
Waking up to this [picture to the right]. Having style.com as my internet homepage is usually a nice wake-up, albeit a little luxurious. Not today though. No-sir-ee. I woke up to these shoes as a key feature of their ‘Summer Essentials’ list. We have the Crocs debate time and time again, recently though their novelty – and therefore our fascination with them – seems to have dropped off. This, ladies and gentlemen is what happens when we let our guard down, essentially … BEJEWELED CROCS! Ahhhh!!! So NO –these “sand stompers” are not worth $1000+ and NO, just because they’re on style.com doesn’t make them OK. Pheww…
Best:
Observing my little brother in action. Having come home from school for the day my youngest brother dumps the shopping he’s been given to bring up, grabs himself an ice-block, starts rummaging through the kitchen drawers and finds what I would call a very average oven mitt. He lifts it up like it’s treasure, walks over to me and says, “can I wear this?” – I say, “sure.” He was so excited!
When you’re an adult everything’s so complicated and not a lot of these tiny things in life seem that amazing. He’s the smallest by a lot in our family so I think most of the time he must just get lost in his own fun little world while the rest of us at home are busy being adults. He’s such a character. He makes my week each week with things like this.
OMM (On My Mind):
Why are we here? Sometimes lately I’ll have really sporadic bursts of spirituality. Nothing really profound but definitely curious, things like: Where did we come from? How do we have our own unique personalities.. Why is that palm tree even there?! I know, right – and then I’ll think ‘I’m hungry!’ and then I’m back. All a bit of fun.

Best – my boyfriend finally received his money from his (pending) divorce settlement. Our joint bank account is looking very healthy and this money will go towards us buying a home together!
Worst – filling in at my parents business while they are on holiday. I’m happy that they are having a great time in the UK, but doing my mums job is frustrating and I dislike being in the (mechanical) workshop as it is cold and dirty and yesterday a mouse ran along my desk! One week down, two more to go! I’m also still doing my regular freelance work on the side and trying to maintain a house and exercise our very boisterous puppy each day.
OMM – the weekend or lack of it. I’m helping out a friends parents by delivering Mother’s Day flowers for them this weekend – after work tonight, Saturday and Sunday. Wondering when I will find the time to do my housework and try have a life!? If anyone has invented a few extra hours I could add to my day, I would be very grateful.

I was just thinking wow this week’s writer is awesome, then I read she is an intern at Mamamia and it made sense. Well done! Would love to read more

Best: having a win over the bitchy women at our school P&C. I feel a tiny bit like I may have stooped to their level but the issue makes a big difference to my child and I’m sick of feeling like the unpopular girl at the front of the bus. So Na, na, na. na I win!! LOL
Worst: my 8 YO son has been very very sick and no one seems to know why. After numerous tests and much distress for both him and me, they are now calling it ‘unknown viral infection’ – like that helps!!! Why is it that if the doctors surgery needs their fridge fixed my husband has to be there within 2 hours, but when I am anxiously waiting on tests results for my child it takes 36 hours before I get the call???

Best: just handed in a 3,000 word uni essay worth 60% of my grade. Phew!! And completed prac teaching this week, so interesting!
Worst: feeling like a bad daughter. In order to complete said essay I took thursday night off work, and am working tonight instead. Tonight I was supposed to drive my grandmother to our place because she’s staying with us for mother’s day, but I can’t because of work. And I’m working on saturday so i could have mother’s day off, which means I won’t really get to see my grandma properly till sunday. And my mum is really stressed at work and I bought her choccy cake and am helping around the house, but I feel like I should be there for her more
causing a lot of tension around the house!

Best 1: I started aerial hoop classes last night – so much fun! Although I can barely move my arms today, my upper body has never had that much of a workout before!
Best 2: Feeding the giraffes at the Werribee Zoo last weekend, they are so amazingly cute.
Worst: one of my dad’s oldest friends tried to take his own life, luckily he didn’t succeed but he has months and months of hospital time ahead of him. All very sad.
loading...
That photo is great!
loading...
Thanks! Although this is probably my favourite photo…
loading...
ooh are you doing it at pole divas in richmond or at circus oz? I did it for a term at divas and it was so much fun but just too far away. My advise is to get some pole gloves if you can!!
loading...
Yeah at divas in Richmond – I dont live far away so I can just ride my bike luckily! After last night I was thinking about getting some gloves – very sore hands! I do own some gym gloves though, do you think they’d work?
loading...
Anything that will protect your palms will be good. and leggings and leg warmers for the back of your knees!
Who is your teacher? I had Angelique but i don’t think she teaches the beginner hoop anymore.
loading...
Excellent, will fish out my gym gloves and give them a go next week. Thanks for the advice!
Oh and I have Holly as my teacher
loading...
Best: after 8 months of trying, I am now pregnant
Worst: No worst!
loading...
Congratulations! xx
loading...
Thank you!

Best – bought new fridge and freezer, can’t wait for all that extra space so excited I’m going to cancel next weeks pedi as the fridge purchase totally pisses all over it for a mothers day pressie!!!
Going out for dinner tonight with Playgroup buddies, no husbands or kids just the ladies!
Husbands boss wants to take us out for dinner as he has done so much extra work lately
Worst -husband diagnosed with haemochromatosis. Explains a lot but I’m pretty worried how much damage has been done, don’t see a specialist for a few weeks.
14. Month old manipulating me suddenly a lot of interrupted sleep!!
loading...
A good warning about haemochromatosis. It’s so silent and all men should be aware of it and ask for their iron levels to be checked.
loading...
Oh hugs about the haemachromatosis. I have the genes for it but am not symptomatic, but an (older) great uncle died from it. I’m hoping that they caught it early for your husband. The treatment is pretty routine (lots of blood taken) though which is comforting.
And everyone else out there – don’t just assume you have low iron! Get it checked before taking supplements!!!
loading...
Best: Down to 68kg. Wahoo. Not a big deal for most people but it feels like yesterday that I was 93kg, so I’m pretty happy.
Worst: Can’t really think of a worst this week – just life’s general ups and downs, nothing worth dwelling on here.
OMM: I have a law ball tonight and have zero idea of what I’m going to do with my hair. Any suggestions?
loading...
Depends on your outfit! If you’re wearing something with a high neck, sleeves, that sort of thing, I would say hair up. Something simple like a sleek ponytail (very on trend at the moment) would be lovely and low maintenance. If you were wearing something strapless, up or down…If you’re handy with a curler, curls are always great for evening. You can scrunch them up for a loose, messy-ish bun, or have glamorous loose waves. Go with what you’re comfortable with and have fun!
loading...
Excellent advice! I think I will curl and pin… crossing my fingers that I can work out how to pin it in a way that doesn’t look like a bird is nesting on my head – Yes, I am THAT hopeless!
loading...
You tube is your friend!!! Seriously there is a tutorial for everything on there!
loading...
Wow congratulations on your best! How long did that take? What are some tips and things you’ve learnt?
Love hearing success stories and how you managed it!
loading...
Thanks Alibee. About 4.5 months.
Things that I’ve learnt would be that you don’t need to eat as much as you think to survive! Shock! I don’t mean I starve myself, I just don’t need big portion sizes.
Also – water, water, water. And some more water!
I also have add a decent amount of psyllium husk in my diet – keeps me full and regular! Which is great because fibre is something I have lacked in my diet.
I also go to the gym about 5 times a week – but I would contribute the weight loss to diet. The exercise has primarily been effective for toning, shaping and burning those unnecessary calories that I refuse to give up
loading...
Last law ball I went to, I got together with Mr W. So I maintain the hairstyle I was wearing was “lucky” HAHA.
I had shoulder length dark red hair at the time and had it loosely curled all over and then pinned over to the side with side swept fringe across the face. I look back at the photos and SWOON at my hair. Oh and Mr W. Haha. Have fuunnnnnnnnnnnnnn
loading...
Congrats on your best- incredible. That’s something you can be super proud of.
I can suggest you get to priceline and buy a hair donut, and do a high bun. Youtube how to videos- it will take you under 5 minutes, is easy peasy, and looks so chic.
loading...
Or use a sock! Google sock bun
loading...
Try doing a Sock or Doughnut Bun, look it up on youtube. Its really easy
loading...
I’ve probably come in too late!! But here’s a cheater chignon from a guest post I’ve done for Fox In Flats:
1. Pull hair into a low ponytail and tie.
2. Separate the tail into two parts, and twist each section.
3. Twist them around each other in the opposite direction to step 2 (this is important, this is the only way the twist won’t unravel) and secure with hair tie.
4. Pull the twisted pony into a bun and pin.

Best: With our european holiday approaching my husband and I have been enjoying date nights themed around our destinations. Rome night on wednesday was awesome with pasta, italian practice and roman history dvd.
Worst: My casual employer recently hired more full timers, so no need for me anymore. Does anyone in Perth need someone one day per week? Office assistant, PA, nanny, anything? (my background is in education, workshop facilitation and libraries).
OMM: One of my friends had a little girl 6 months ago and I’d really love to help my friend so she has a little time out for her, but all my offers of assistance keep getting ignored. For the mum’s out there, what help would you have wanted during that first year?
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
loading...
Barge in -put baby in a pram and start walking away. !! Tell her to have a shower and go to sleep. One or 2 hours will help her heaps!
loading...
Or take all her dirty washing and wash /dry it at your place.
loading...
I don’t even have a baby and I’d be overjoyed if someone did that!
loading...
Sometimes help is hard to accept, even when you feel swamped, I would have died if someone did my washing. But if a friend came around with some nice dips and bikkies, homemade cake, and brought me a magazine to read later, made me a cuppa and stopped for a chat that would all hit the spot. The hardest thing about being a new mum was the feeling of isolation. Or book in for a pedi together and you hold the baby and keep her company while she gets hers done then swap. Im sure shes grateful just that you are showing you care.
loading...
Maybe she doesn’t need any help!
loading...
Thanks for the suggestions. Taking her washing feels a bit personal, but I like the magazine and pedi idea! Thanks all.
and Anonymous, I know she doesn’t need my help. She is an awesome mum and doing great. But isn’t it nice to have an extra pair of hands or a surprise cheer you up when you’re tired?
loading...
That’s very thoughtful of you Walking on Sunshine to want to help your friend. Sometimes it can be hard to feel OK about being away from your baby, but hard to admit it so you say no to offers of time out. MayaM’s suggestion is fantastic, some company and nice treats could be just the thing.
Good luck with your job hunting too! xx

Best: booked a holiday to the Cook Islands for the September school holidays and am SUPER excited!
Worst: Had to pay for it the same week the credit card got paid. VERY sad looking bank account! VERY first world problem, though!
Happy Friday everyone!
loading...
Love the Cooks! Lucky you, have fun!
loading...
Am getting excited while I do research, so any tips will be gratefully received!

Best: few days off of work productively spent getting lots of wedding planning done!!! But boy are there tough decisions that I did not even think about before talking to photographers, etc and how expensive do flowers want to be!?!?! are they really necessary!? However best wedding purchase of the week has to be a pair of short heel and a pair of high heel Tony Bianco wedding shoes for $80 total!!! one happy little bride to be right here!
Worst: the life of a relief teacher can suck sometimes… missing early morning calls due to phone being on silent..whoops, then being in demand for one particular day but not other days during the week! oh well shall enjoy the few days off whilst they last
OMM: houses… why is it we seem to find perfect house in an area we want when it is under contract but hasn’t been updated on the net!?!?! All the excitement about finding something only to find out cant even look at it because someone else has got it!! grr oh the joys of house hunting!!!
oh and side note.. how CUTE was Mia’s son on the Today Show this morning! love his sense of style too
and Mia for letting him express his personality on national TV!!
loading...
I’m totally being a Best and Worst whore today. Alas, I’m too excited about the Equal Love rally tomorrow. Anyone attending the event in Melbourne? We should meet up at some point and have a Mamamia coffee afterwards!

Ok, have had a pretty interesting week – a lot of shitty things happening, but of course the good is trying to shine through too.
I will start with my worst.
I was cleaning out my old home (on another property we moved from) trying to get stuff out of cupboards, collecting cuttings from all my roses and general throwing out on Sunday. I lit the 44 gallon drum with all the rubbish in it to burn all the rubbish from the house. I was watching the fire in the drum and as I spent a bit of time cleaning out and going through things I thought I would keep an eye on it for a few hours to make sure it was ok. I left the place and went home (8kms away) to sort more stuff out.
Well, turns out as it was smouldering something must of sparked out or blown out and started a grass fire around the firebucket. There was plenty of dry grass to burn and of course the fire took hold. It burnt down an old wooden shed and was so close to burning down the workshop, the garage, the Toyota shed, the blacksmiths shed, the 2 silos and another small wooden shed. Also, I came so close to burning my beautiful house down too. The fire came right up to the house and I can’t believe that I nearly caused so much devastation and loss with my stupidity.
I have actually ruined some fences and some brand new fencing gear and gates too with my fire. Along with the shed which is now a few bits of tin on the ground in amongst a pile of ash.
The only bit of luck I had was that my husband saw the smoke as he was driving past the property and he managed to put it out on his own. Thank god we had a chemical sprayer there and he used it as a firefighter. I also could of burnt down the tractor shed and a very old (unused) shearing shed he tells me now.
He was pretty cross with me, and he has only in the past 2 days laugh a little and call me “little lucifer” or “jiffy”
I can tell you that my Sunday night was spent crying as I looked over the charred paddock in the full moonlight walking around with a bucket of water putting out any embers that could of relit.
It was like the moon was mocking me as it was the night of the fullest, brightest amazing moon so I could fully see what damage I had done.
Oh, god I feel so sick about being so dumb – and I am from the country!
I have to ring my father-in-law as it is his property and he is in Sydney at the moment. I wanted to ring him all week, but I didn’t want him to worry whilst he was at Beef Week.
I am sure he will forgive me, but I don’t want him to think I am a complete ditz.
That is my worst of the week, possibly the year. It can only get better.
I got 2 trojan viruses on my computer and was freaking out that all our business stuff would be lost too. It was recovered, but I felt like it was great timing too!
Ok, the best…..
Went to a mothers day assembly at the school and big son was doing “something special”. He wrote a poem and he read it out in front of the whole school. It made me burst with pride! At least I am doing something right….
Three year old son is now going to pre-school and loving it. Even though the tantrums are regular withe the big adjustment he is making. He made a cute photoframe with a pic of his lovely face in it. I can’t wait for all the school made presents and lots of hugs from my boys.
It will be all better froom her on in.
loading...
My sleazy mind is drifting….firefighting husbands…might have to do some burning here!
loading...
Lol, i have never seen a bad-looking firefighter
loading...
lol i have!
loading...
Yikes! Your worst is scary. Fires in the bush have always scared me, the way they spread so quickly is terrifying. I’ve come close to having the house burn down a few times whilst living in bushland. Glad no one in your family was in danger.
loading...
Worst: Kids sick with coughs, sore throats and runny noses:( …hope I don’t get it!!
Best: A loan we needed has been approved…phew:)!!
loading...
Best: Sleeping well, puppies are behaving, work is going ok, eating better…. things are just good at the moment.
Worst: My mum’s friends daughter was killed in a single car accident on Wednesday night. No alcohol involved, just a tragic accident. I spent a lot of time playing with this girl when we were growing up. My mum is very upset and I’m just trying to be there for her…. have arranged for a vase of bright gerberas to be sent to her this afternoon with a note saying ‘We’re not going anywhere…. Love ‘Your Babies’ xx’ from my sister and I – we’re 28 and 25 but we’ll always be her babies…..

Just as an aside, I’m wondering how Monique’s doing? It’s been a while since I’ve read anything from her (but maybe I missed something) and I’m hoping she’s OK. Monique, are you out there? xx
loading...
I’ve been wondering the same thing Maybedaisy…Monique, I hope good things are coming your way
loading...
Hi maybedaisy, aren’t you a sweetheart
I’m going OK, I decided to take a step back from MM after the sheer number of snarky comments not just me, but other commenters were getting. I still read the site, just not an active participator.
I’m still on the job hunt but I’m doing a lot of interning and blogging and I’ve got a few prospects in the mix as well which is good.
But thanks for checking, you are so lovely!
loading...
I’ve been on a break myself – agreed that it does you good to take a step back every now and then! x
loading...
Glad to hear that things are improving Monique! Keep at it
loading...
Great to see you again Monique!
loading...
Hi Monique,
Great to hear from you! I’ve read all your posts over the past six months and always wanted to write more than I did. Your situation was a little too close to home, however, and made me go WAHHHHHHH.
In any case, I really hope things are improving for you. Even if your situation isn’t fantastic, it sounds as though your emotional state is much better than it was.
I have a little advice on the job front (although I’m sure you’re sick of hearing it). I spent six years at uni: Arts Degree + Graduate Diploma of PR + Masters of Professional Communication and come graduation, I could not get a job. COULD NOT. So, I signed up to a recruitment agency and scored a few weeks’ temp work at a large multi-national. Two weeks later and they had created a wonderful position for me. I don’t mean to be all braggy but maybe this gives you some hope.
Lots of love to you, Monique. May good things come your way. And soon.
xx
loading...
Hey Monique! Thought you may have got worn out by the snark that occurred during your breakup
I don’t remember the snarkers but I sure remember you, your honesty and your bravery when you were posting about getting through the breakup. Breakups are pure craziness sometimes, especially when you’re not expecting them.
We live, we love, we feel, we write and we share. Why some people feel the need to dishonour someone else’s experiences or feelings is beyond my comprehension.
Hugs to you, you brave girl xo

Nichole, your little brother is so cute! I think it’s lovely that you get to enjoy his youthful enthusiasm and quirkiness.
Best: A friend of mine had her baby, and we saw her on Wednesday night. My bf is getting so clucky! It’s a bit of a surprise but very sweet.
Best #2: In the last two weeks I have been on holidays and had a birthday. Both delightful. And my eating and exercise habits are improving, so I am feeling healthier than ever (and have lost some weight!).
Worst: Bf is still out of work. It’s getting us both down. I’m a bit tired of having to be the rock in so many ways.
OMM: Sex. We’ve got some issues that need sorting. I think now might be the time to finally sort them (thanks for the sealed post MM, it gave me a push).
loading...
While reading your post, I wondered if you had been reading the sealed section and, voila, great minds think alike! Good luck xo
loading...
Best: Seeing a guy I like in passing in the most random of places. Certainly brightened up my day!
Worst: Have had shocking concentration at work (Um… like right now)
OMM:
I can’t wait to be in love.
Seeing my best friend tonight.
Consistency in a person – it’s important.
loading...
Bests: walking in the autumn sunshine, seeing my girls face smiling in pure contentment on the walk home from the park. Little pleasures like cups of tea, and laughing with my girl.
Best 2: I just wrote a whole long paragraph about worsts but when I read it back I realised they weren’t really worsts and were actually positives.
Omm: mr cat is a keen musician, and one of his songs has been picked up on JJJ unearthed. He wrote it awhile ago but has just recorded it. I love it and he is so excited.
The you tube link is here :

Great to hear some excellent bests there, Zelicat! So happy for you. x
loading...
Thanks PG
loading...
Just had a listen to Mr Cat – what a beautiful song Zelicat!
Good luck in the unearthed competition – I’ll keep my ears peeled listening for it on the wireless
.
loading...
Beautiful music.. pretty nice bloke too
I just added it to my favourites. Good luck xo
loading...
Thanks Susan as well. I think he is pretty cute, but I am biased
loading...
Lol … I’m addicted to the clip now (not in a creepy stalker way though). Playing it while writing my current assignment for uni. Does he perform live anywhere in Brisbane?
loading...
he’s not performing live anywhere at the moment, (mostly due to work commitments). I am glad I am not the only one listening to it over and over- I think it has a real ear-worm quality ( can’t get it out of my head! ) but couldn’t tell if it was just because it’s ‘my ‘ song
loading...
Happy Friday!!! Here’s my week, in a nutshell.
BEST
Hellooooo, 16th birthday!! Fridays are the best days to have a birthday, and as well as that, I have two free periods today!!!!
WORST
If you guys have ever heard of the Butterfly Challenge, you’ll know what I mean when I say, I have two butterflies on my person right now.
OMM
My parents bought me an uber-awesome scale for my birthday. I’m happy with it, but I keep thinking, ‘My next psychiatrist will love you guys for that.’
loading...
What’s the Butterfly Challenge?
loading...
The Butterfly Challenge, basically, is where, if you get the urge to selfharm, instead of cutting or burning or whatever, you draw a butterfly. There are a couple of rules though – you have to name your butterfly, you can’t wash off your butterfly (it has to come off naturally) and you can’t selfharm while you have butterflies drawn – otherwise you kill your butterflies.
loading...
Good luck with the Butterfly Challenge, you will come through the other side I promise you. xxpt
loading...
Best: I have developed a great exercise routine and am getting motivated
Worst: A guy I used to date and i have been flirting and sending steamy texts lately. I have find out he has had a girlfriend since March. Good times!
OMM: His poor girlfriend….
loading...
You deserve better than to be his ‘bit of fun on the side’.
Look after yourself, because hes thinking only about himself.
loading...
Thanks, Cait
I know, what a douche! His gf deserves infinitely better as well….
loading...
Best: getting great grades back on uni assignments, I love it when I really get something.
Worst: ‘breakup’ with my best friend. No idea why or what happened, ad even though she used to be a great friend, recently it just felt like hard work. I only feel relief. Still sad though. And why is it all your other friends can see it is a toxic friendship?? Lucky I have many other wonderful people to step into the breach
OMM: exams. Two weeks and I get a break and some sleep. I’m so tired pulling all these late nights.
Love to the mm community xxxx
loading...
Oh the bedazzled crocs made me laugh, bet you got a shock waking up to that!
The best – my husband has been cooking up a storm lately and really looking after me when I’ve had late night work and appointments. Every time I’ve got home there has been a delicious meal on the table. I really appreciate him for that.
The worst – That same lovely husband said last week we were allowed to get a puppy. This week he changed his mind, I’m allowed a bicycle instead…not really the same, but hey!
loading...
Noooo! Get a puppy!!
loading...
I agree – get a puppy! My boyfriend and I adopted a 9 month old pup three weeks ago and she is such a joy. Last night we taught her to drop to the floor when we point a finger at her like a gun and say “Bang!”.
loading...
Worst: Ex boyfriend still sending me messages. I am still ignoring them, but I just want them to go away. Hopefully he will get bored of me soon.
Best: I met someone! He found me online, we went on a date on Wednesday night…I wasn’t overly excited about the date, we hadn’t really spoken much, so I just went straight after work in what I was wearing. And whadda ya know? We really clicked, talked for hours, and the chemistry was sizzling. I am smitten! We saw each other again last night, and have been texting, emailing and chatting on the phone. I have butterflies! I haven’t been this happy in a long, long time. He is so sweet and lovely, and smart and gorgeous…I can’t stop grinning!
OMM: New boy…of course!
loading...
How exciting!! Enjoy those butterflies
loading...
Would you consider changing your number? I had an ex who continued to text/call me after I told him I didn’t want to be in contact, so I changed my number. It can be a bit of a hassle, but it made me feel completely in control of my (excellent) decision to cut him out of my life.
Enjoy your new boy buzz, how exciting x
loading...
Sean Bean recently got arrested for harrassing calls to his ex wife. Send a link to the article to the ex and tell him its his last chance to back off before you send him down that same shitty creek.
Good luck with the new man

I have two bests this week.
1: I HAVE SLEPT EVERY NIGHT THIS WEEK. want to know how much sleep I’d had in the two weeks prior? About 50 hours. Over two weeks. In two hour at the most blocks. Want to know how much I’ve had this week?? 58 hours. FIFTY EIGHT HOURS. That’s an average of 9 hours a night (I snuck a nap in there too). What’s changed? I bought The Gift of Sleep last week, and P took to it like a duck to water. Thank you baby cheeses.
2: I had my first appointment with a psychologist to get my PND sorted. She was lovely and we clicked.
Worst: I found out I am JAM PACKED with issues that I should have sorted out about a decade ago…
OMM: money. I’d like more in our bank account, it’s looking a bit anemic
loading...
Dear me. It appears maths isn’t my strong point……
loading...
congratulations Sammie. I hope the sleep and you pnd start making you feel awesome. Just in time for mothers day!
loading...
Bless you, ALL the best (read: most horrid) “issues” started over a decade ago
loading...
Haha … love your comment … I sometimes feel my best/most horrid *issues* started before I was even born lol
loading...
Best: receiving a fantastic mark on my Organised Crime report for my Masters degree. Didn’t expect such a good mark, but it makes me feel wonderful knowing that all my late nights have paid off.
Worst: still haven’t obtained a graduate job since completing my Bachelors Degree last year. Thirty applications and one interview have lead to nowhere. Beginning to feel like giving up. Have even gone out of my way to request meetings with people in the sector to discuss employment possibilities. Confidence is fading fast. All the goals that I have set to achieve are being pushed back even more.
On top of that I have the flu, even though I received the flu needle. This is making it extremely difficult to get in the right frame of mind to complete my 4 assessments that are due.
Hoping the light at the end of the tunnel is coming up soon.
Have a great weekend everyone
loading...
Hi Elle! What’s your undergraduate degree in? If we can get a better idea of what you’re looking for we might be able to help. xx
loading...
Hi there maybedaisy
My undergrad degree was a Bach of Justice majoring in criminology and policing which I absolutely loved! The area can be quite broad as in it covers all things from youth crime to intelligence and national security. At the moment I’m in Rockhampton (qld) and am ever after just a job as a youth worker to gain more experience. Thank you for you’re interest
loading...
Hi Elle – my second degree is in Justice Studies and I did the same double major as you! I’ve never used it though, unfortunately. I thought I wanted to work in crime and Justice Studies would have helped that but I changed my mind in my last year of uni so I have never used the degree.
Not sure how far you are willing to move – but when my year graduated (I still had 2 years to go on my other degree so I didn’t go through the whole job seeker process with them), most of them were moving to Canberra for Very Secretive Sounding Jobs aka, probably going to work for ASIO or something like that. Also, the Qld Police force and the DPP have heaps of jobs that a degree in Justice would be very useful. Usually they are office based roles, especially junior legal officer roles. Good luck

I second whippersnappers advice. The DPP’s have witness assistants, also try victims of crime commission. There is a volunteer organization in QLD that provides support and information to child witnesses who need to give evidence in criminal matters the link is : http://www.pact.org.au/services.html

Oooo thank you! Will check it out

Hi whippersnapper!
I kind of went through the same thing – changed my mind 51 thousand times about what I wanted to do. Am glad I stuck with Justice though, it is very motivational in wanting I help make the world a safer place.
I was looking at moving back to Brisbane – I had applied for about 15 jobs with the DPP and Qld Police down there, didn’t even get asked for an interview though. I am looking at staying in Rocky for now mainly because I 1. Have a huge dog which would require a house with a 50 meter high fence (slight exaggeration) and finding a rental property like that good be quite difficult and 2. I just started seeing someone here so am looking at hanging around a bit longer. In the end though I would absolutely LOVE to work for ASIO or ASIS but I feel like I’m just not in the position to move that far yet.

I did a psychology degree and a lot of students in my class combined psychology with a criminology degree and later went on to apply for jobs at ASIO. Let me tell you, it is not easy to get a job with them, I don’t actually know anyone who was successful.
Their recruitment process is full on to say the least, there are several stages in the whole process, numerous interviews, extensive background checks, intelligence testing etc and it takes months to complete. From what I’ve heard, intelligence testing is the most difficult to pass, it involves a lot of maths and basically covers all bases.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting that you can’t do it, if that’s what you’re interested in, you should definitely give it a try, I just don’t want people to think they should move to Canberra as soon as they finish their degree because they will get a job with ASIO. It’s not that easy.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Wow, so interesting and impressive! Unfortunately I don’t know anything about that field but maybe someone on here does. I know how awful it is to be out of work when you’re so capable and qualified. You just want to shout, “Do you even know how fabulous I am and how hard I worked at uni?” to random people in the street. Good luck, Elle. Keep us posted. xx

Hahaha exactly!! I feel like doing that on a daily basis! Will do though! Thanks for your support. Hope you have a wonderful Friday and weekend. Xx

Dont give up Elle! I was lucky and somehow managed to get a grad job this year but most of the people in my degree havent been so lucky…something will come along, don’t stop looking and fighting for opportunities. My tip would be to network…know anyone who works in the industry you want to work in? Chat to them. Maybe consider a recruitment agency to! Goodluck!

Thank you for you wonderful advice Emma! This site is full of splendid people instantly cheer me up! Will look into the recruitment agency though. I have done a bit of networking, if there is a course or a talk in our region on in my area of interest I’ll go to it and have a chat to everyone. I think I have just got in at a bad time though. I had a job lined up at the Department of Youth Justice here but their budget has been cut and the government is restructuring the organisation. The manager said they would set up another meeting in a few more months when things, hopefully, have become clearer.
Congrats on your job though!! Enjoy your weekend

Best: Started reading The Game Of Thrones after all the comments on the book post the other week, and enjoying it so far! Fantasy usually isn’t my thing but I like the way this has been written, much easier than say The Hobbit which is the one book that I could never finish. There’s nothing like discovering a good series…my inner bookworm is very, very happy!
Worst: No worsts, life is sweet at the moment.
OMM: Mother’s Day. Buying a gift for my mum is next to impossible as she’s so picky. Every year it’s the same old song – she’ll return whatever we bought her for something she likes better (just like Rachel on Friends!). And don’t tell me about vouchers…she always forgets to use them…guess it’s flowers and a card again!

Oh, Nichole your little brother made me smile! My son used to use my crocodile shaped oven mitt to eat his iceblocks. It was like a hand puppet with fingers through the top ‘jaw’ and thumb in the bottom to make his jaws snap. You’ve brought back some lovely memories as he is now 16. Thank you.
My best…I’ve been offered a new job, full time teaching at a school an hour away from home. It’s exciting as it was a highly sought position and I’m the chosen one.
Worst: I’m a single parent and as this job is an hour away, I have to leave before my children are out of bed. This means my 16 year old son getting my 11 year old ready for school. I feel guilty already and haven’t even started the job. I know my older son is more than capable of this but I still feel guilty.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. And Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, stepmums, foster mums and grandmothers

Congrats Kathy … so pleased for you scoring the job. You are the ONE!
Why, though, do you feel guilty when you’re showing your boys that it’s possible to get the things you need and want in life? When you’re also teaching your boys some more life skills? I used to look after my siblings from a much earlier age and I turned out okay (I think?) My children took turns doing it with their siblings too as I was a single mum. They are generally capable young adults now.
I’m so pleased for you and you’re going to need your energy for better things than guilt
