by NADIA BARLOW

I am writing this because I’m fed up! What am I fed up with? I’m fed up with high heels.

Actually, I like high heels. I own a few enviable pairs that occasionally make their way out of my wardrobe. I usually spend the first hour admiring my feet from all angles, while the rest of the night I’m left hobbling behind my friends croaking, “Wait for me!’ I will never understand how women can spend a whole day in them. But I buy them anyway, because they’re pretty. And they make your legs look HOT. So I see them as a treat for my feet. Because that’s really all I can handle!

The last few years high heels seem have become more and more popular. And they also seem to be getting high and higher. I used to think 5cm was high, but now I’m relieved when I can find a pair that are under 10cm. I’ve even seen some at 15cm. I will never buy shoes this high, and while I don’t have anything against other people wearing them, what I do have a problem with is high heels that size being the only option available.

“But what about ballet flats?” you say. Well I am over ballet flats. It’s as if the designers have said. We’re only making super high heels now and for anyone who doesn’t like it, they can have ballet flats. I would like to be able to wear a flat shoe other than ballet flats. I have a friend who actually damaged her foot wearing them because they were too flat. Apparently a little heel is better than no heel at all.

“But what about boots?” you say. I love boots, but can you wear them with a formal dress to a wedding? (And not going for the boho look?)

NIK2300SH ROUGE SHINYLEATHER 15cm and counting. Does size matter?

15cm high Peeptoe heels.

And I’m not that hard to please. I would be happy if there were more shoes around the 5cm mark. Even 8cm if I really had to compromise. But 15cm? When will it end? I’d just like a more manageable height, something you can survive the whole day in if you’ve got a gig as a bridesmaid, or you’re getting married – both of which I am doing this year!

For some reason I can’t help feeling personally offended by it. It just seems against women. In the western world we criticise other countries for practises that we consider to be oppressive against women, such as foot binding or even wearing the burqa. And with full knowledge of the physical damage high heels can cause our bodies in the long term, how are we any better?

Feminism is about choice. I have nothing against women wearing heels as high as they like. It’s their choice. But I would like to have a choice too. If you visit online shops, or walk into any mainstream footwear chain looking for formal high heels less than 8cm, you will find very little choice available.

Ironically, the one thing that comforts me is the knowledge that nothing ever stays the same in fashion. I can only hope that in a few years these super high heel mutations will be gone… destined to be replaced by yet another ridiculous trend that will dominate the market place.

When I was working in an office I wore 15cm heeled shoes until they became comfortable.

There was a 3 week excruciatingly painful adjustment period, but after that it was easy as pie!

I’m only 160cm so I loved wearing them. Although on the odd occasion that I wore flats, I would have absolutely everyone comment on how surprisingly short I was :-/

You should really check out Zu shoes as a tall chick myself I’ve found them to have at least a selection of heels as a lower height and what’s better they look great cause they’re lower versions of their super high ones too. So you don’t have to give up glamour for comfort you can have both.

Oh god, I feel your pain. At 5’9, regular high heels leave me feeling borderline too tall compared to my shorter friends… the monstrous platform type heels that seem to be all you can get now days are just completely out of the question for me. It’s so annoying! I haven’t been able to buy heels since 2010!

I so agree. I’m 27 and 5’2, and 7cm is my absolute limit for heels. It’s such a struggle to find a decent looking, relatively soft leather/suede etc mid heel. The only ones I find in that category are always made by Hush Puppies or Diana Ferrari and come in navy leather with a square toe. The pretty, sparkly heels are always 10cm plus, why????!

Be warned everyone… High heels are bad for you. I badly damaged my feet by wearing high heels when I was in my early 20s. I had constant pain in my big toes even when I was wearing flats. So I went to the podiatrist, got orthotics and it took my feet months to stop hurting and heal up. These days I get a pain in my hip when I wear heels for more than a day at a time. So I am doing pilates for that. I am only 37, but for me, it is clear I am just not built for high heels. For the rest of my life now, I have to wear flats (unless it’s a very special occasion… Even then, you couldn’t pay me to wear 15cm ones).

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always been a bit hopeless with heels and certainly struggle a few hours into a night out unless they’ve got a platform or are of a height that does not encourage broken ankles/neck at every pavement. I am totally flabbergasted by the heights available these days but also don’t understand why so many lovely ladies insist on wearing them when they can’t actually WALK in them. My understanding is that lots of girls wear heels to feel and look sexy – this is then totally undermined by the strange and awkward baby giraffe gait they have to adopt just to shuffle along the street. OMG!!! I so agree with this!!
I’m 5’11” and you know what – I don’t need the extra platformy bit at the front of shoes to make me that little bit taller – genetics gave that to me anyway!!
I so wish that shoes would come out in like 2 or 3 sizes, like the ones with the platformy thing for those who like, the ones with the heel without said platform and then maybe a little lower heel – cos you know sometimes high high heels is too much for a full day at work!!
*sigh* I love it but sometimes I hate being tall!! I get very sick of the “you are so tall already, why do you need such big heels?” (the answer – I don’t need them but fashion trends have dictated that these are the only size heel you can buy these days – why can’t I wear heels because I am tall??)

Another 5’11″ girl here! And I agree. I LOVE heels but I don’t need the height. I have a shoe a day calendar and every time I drool over a shoe it is from the 20′s – 60′s. Since then they just aren’t as classy and the heels are ridiculous.
However I did manage to find some shoes in Wittner on the weekend with a nice 6.5cm heel! And I noticed Joanne Mercer had some very similar sized ones, so maybe sense is prevailing!

100% agree!! I broke my one and only pair of closed-in heels the other day, so set off to buy some more. 3 hours later, I’d found one pair that wasn’t over 10cm high and still looked formal enough to wear to an upcoming ball, but they didn’t have any left in my size. I was just about to give up and go home shoe-less when I walked past Betts, which had several (plain, but that was what I wanted) pair of heels that were under 10cm AND they had padding in them so the ball of your foot isn’t under so much pressure! Now I’m hoping they’ll last me forever, or at least until the average shoe height gets lower!

I like the way they make me look (longer legs, smaller butt) but I don’t really like wearing them, they hurt my feet. I also struggle to walk in super high heels, as my feet roll outwards when I walk. I always pack fold up flats in my bag when I go out so I can wear them from Point A to Point B :)

Aside from the fact that high heels are extremely painful, I also feel like I scare men away when I wear them! I’m very tall and if me and all my tall friends wear heels out then it definitely seems we scare them off. I’m sure it’s the increased height too because I’ll wear the same outfit with flats and do fine! Ahhh well, men say they love heels but I think maybe on petite women and not us tall girls. Luckily I love my flats and own many pairs!

6 inches heels for me! I’m so short, and even if my friends are wearing low/medium heels, they tower over me, so high heels are a must.
Plus I just LOVE them! They’re so sexy and make your legs go on forever.
I can walk in them perfectly (it’s the blisters that get me – and not just from heels), but not so much after a drink or two!
And to one of the posters below – it’s not the height of the heel, but what you wear with it that makes you look cheap. I’ve got six-inch boots that make a short shirt look so tacky, yet look stunning and elegant with pants or jeans.

I do salsa dancing, so I refuse to buy any shoes that have a platform in them, which also means the heel can’t get much higher than 9cm anyway (otherwise it would be like walking on pointe all the time). Even so, after two hours dancing last night my feet are definitely feeling it!

Just FYI, Diana Ferrari stores often have pairs around the 3in/8cm mark, and if you’re in Melbourne then there are some nice shoes at the Queen Vic markets too (Valeria Grossi is a great designer, and affordable).

How can it be against women when women are the ones choosing (and it is a choice, there’s no stigma attached to picking ballet flats over skyscraper heels) to buy the shoes and thus creating the demand?

I’ve wondered about this when I’ve complained about kids’ clothes at shops. I’ve been told “But it’s what people want, it’s what they buy”. Yes, they do, but they can only buy what is available. If there are other options available, I think they’d get bought too.

I don’t do heels at all, by the way. I think they’re silly and dangerous. There’s a shop here that has me baffled as to what they actually sell and who buys their shoes – they’re ALL about 15cm high and lairy colours. Mystifies me.

The other time that stands out is Anzac Day Dawn Service – one of the Salvos girls was allowed to march wearing some ridiculously inappopriate patent skyscrapers.

Yeah, I agree. I love high heels at night time, and during the day if I am wearing a shoe with heigh it will be high wedges or my very loved 3inch booties. I think the new super high heel height is fine as long as it suits you. And is actually more comfortable than the 3inch stilettos of times past. The platform provides a padding and protects your foot from the ground of uneven broken things on the night club dance floors.

And if you find them difficult to wear because you are not use to them, it just takes practice. :) I love heels! The are my favourite type of shoe. I always find it hard to buy any other type of shoe because they are the most beautiful. And the very high heel is part of that elegance.

    Agreed, agreed, and agreed!!!!
I prefer heels of about 5 cms that I can walk and dance in without killing my back and legs and yet I cannot find them ANYWHERE at the moment!
Most things for sale in heels look like hooker shoes……

    What happened to choice?

I thought it was the fact that I live in Darwin and we don’t have as much choice as other places. I’ve been after a pair of about 5 cm heels for work for the past few months and can’t find any anywhere. :-(
