There's an Aussie streaming service that's completely free, and it's freakin' brilliant.

Netflix. Stan. Foxtel Go. ABC iView.

The Australian consumer has a heap of streaming services to choose from at little to no cost.

I married Netflix before its Australian launch, flirted with Stan over Christmas and pretended I was my mother to access Foxtel Go. The combination had more or less satisfied my entertainment needs… until I met her: SBS On Demand.

She appeared out of nowhere and sat right beside me, like a hot stranger on an empty bus. Intentional? Convenient? I kept my eyes forward. Play it cool, Meredith.

Quick glance left: Documentaries that make Netflix and Stan’s offerings look like Year Four Ned Kelly reenactments.

I ripped my gaze back and shot off recommendations to my friends like Tinder screenshots: Family Rules, Inside The Chinese Closet, Undressed.

Play it cool, play it cool.

Daniella from Family Rules explains what it’s like to be called the “Aussie Kardashians.”

Quick glance left: Countless titles I’d only ever seen advertised in film festivals: Paris, Je T’aime, The Kids Are Alright, Beginners.

Eyes front. Count to three. One. Two. Oh. Who Cares.

Final glance left: The same shitty comedy I’d been binging on Netflix the night before: Brooklyn-Nine-Nine.

WHY. AM. I. PAYING. MONEY. FOR. THIS.

I had dated SBS On Demand before, she soothed me with foreign news and 200+ episodes of Iron Chef. But she was nothing special. She was the streaming service you spent the night with when everyone else was busy.

SBS has changed.

It’s as though while Netflix and Stan raced ahead to grab this cheesy film and that series re-run, SBS was taking her time, picking her offerings like a careful florist.

The result is a free service that is cleverly organised into sub-category galore.

Instead of just ‘popular’, SBS delivers: ‘Warm And Fuzzies’, ‘Famous Faces’, ‘The Oscar Goes To’ and ‘Rainbow Pride’ – to name a few. It’s easy to navigate, easy to watch (the app is offered on most apple and android devices) and easy to recommend (click, share).

This sounds like an advertisement, but it’s not. It’s a love letter.

A love letter that promises to satisfy your “what should I watch next” moment in three clicks or less.

Still hungry for recommendations? Our latest episode of The Binge covers two of SBS’ offerings: Family Rule and Undressed.
