How can a speech with the line "You will soon be dead" be so darn inspiring?

By MAMAMIA ROGUE

When Tim Minchin gives you life advice, you listen.

Comedian, musician and general all-round awesome human being, Minchin gave a graduation speech at the University of WA last week (he was just being awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters for his contribution to the arts – NO BIGGIE).

And it was kind of brilliant.

In ten short minutes (and they really do fly by) he offers nine life lessons that he’s picked up in his ‘37.9 years’, and in only a way a comedian could, they are equal parts hilarious and wise.

Check it out:

At 2:50 he upsets motivational speakers everywhere by saying you don’t have to have a dream

At 3:45 he encourages you to never seek happiness

At 6:16 he says opinions are definitely not like arseholes

At 9:50 he talks about defining yourself by what you love, not by what you hate.

He wraps the whole thing up by ending on a note that manages to be a little depressing and gloriously uplifting at the same time.

This is definitely one to share with every other human you know.
