Man on smart phone doesn't see whale. Is all of us.

Let’s all enjoy judging this man, even though we all do exactly this all the time. Always.

What happens when you spend all day glued to your smart phone?

Have you ever wondered what’s passing you by while you’re swiping left a Tinder creep on your daily commute? Maybe you’re just missing the traffic jam outside your tram window or maybe, just maybe, it’s something a little more spectacular.

“We’re a generation of idiots. Smart phones and dumb people.”

Now, let’s imagine that your tram is a boat. And you are this poor sod who was so preoccupied with his smart phone he didn’t see the humpback just metres from his vessel.

Let’s not be too quick to judge. After all, let he who is without Facebook type the first comment.

And I mean whales, pah! There are plenty of important things this man may have been doing.

Here is a list:

1. Playing 2048

2. Instagramming earlier #blessed boat times.

3. Google mapping his way back to shore. The ocean is big. And scary. And full of creatures you would not want to be trapped in open water with.

4. Texting his Mum. You guys, he is probably a very conscientious son.

5. Googling the suspicious cancer-like freckle he spotted earlier

The picture was posted by photographer Eric Smith with the caption: “A sign of the times.”

Smith told US broadcaster ABC News the man didn’t look up once while his boat sailed the length of the beach.

“I thought it sucked that he missed such a wonderful moment happening just two feet in front of him,” he said.

“We’re all guilty being buried in our phones, even me. You think life is better on your phone, but we’re missing what’s happening around us.”

It’s a good point. There’s a whole world out there. I know because I just googled it on my phone.

What have you missed while you were looking at your phone?
